The hot surface ignitor that is visibly cracked/broken at the tip.

I had a very disappointing experience with GEM Plumbing & Heating regarding a furnace repair in Pawtucket. I called Friday (Jan 2nd) morning for same-day service and was told a technician would arrive between 8am-4pm, with a call ahead. I waited at the property all day. At 3:45pm I called to check in and was then told the visit would be delayed until 5-7pm. At 6:30pm I received another call saying the technician was coming from Narragansett and would arrive in about 45 minutes. He ultimately arrived around 7:30pm. The technician performed some voltage checks and told me the issue involved the ignitor and flame sensing. He then quoted a total repair cost of $1,575, without breaking down parts vs. labor. I was shocked, especially given that this was for a furnace without a pilot and what appeared to be a basic ignition issue. When I asked for a breakdown, I was told GEM does not disclose that information. I declined the repair and paid the $149 diagnostic fee. The following day, I hired a small local HVAC company. Within 15 minutes, they diagnosed the issue as a clearly broken hot surface ignitor. The part cost $30 and the total repair--including diagnosis and installation--was $190. The system has worked perfectly since. I'm adding a picture of the hot surface ignitor. Given that the failed ignitor was visibly damaged once removed, I am left questioning how GEM arrived at a $1,575 quote, or whether unnecessary components would have been replaced. Either way, the pricing was completely out of line with the actual repair needed. I understand and accepted the diagnostic fee policy at the time of booking, but given the incorrect or grossly disproportionate repair recommendation, I believe the $149 diagnostic charge should be refunded. In this case, I don't think they earned it. If they refund this amount to me, I'll update this review, otherwise, beware that if a GEM truck parks in front of your house, you will be charge $149 even if their diagnosis is incorrect or wildly disproportionate to the actual repair. Also beware that they do not have transparent pricing. They give you one price, without breaking it down for parts and labor. When I questioned the price, the technician told me he has to go with whatever the iPad tells him and there is nothing he can do about pricing. Unfortunately, this experience cost me an entire day of waiting, followed by a quote that bore no resemblance to the real repair. I cannot recommend GEM based on this experience.

I have been a longtime customer with an annual contract, but this latest experience makes me question that. We had a faucet that wasn't working and the tech came to fix it-which he did. Shortly after he left we realized he had sat on and cracked a toilet seat. We contacted the company and they sent the tech back to our house. He denied damaging the seat and got confrontational. He was asked to leave. I called the company multiple times to ask to speak with a manager and was told one would call me. I have not gotten any response. Atrocious customer service and we did not appreciate an extremely belligerent service tech who stayed parked in front of our house (in a hostile manner) until we called the company to ask him to leave. Would not recommend. TWO WEEKS LATER: Got a letter of apology and a $50 Visa gift card.

    Capacitor price difference!

Way over charged for a main breaker job. It's a rip off company with a nice logo on their trucks that you pay for.

The service person who came was very professional and informative. It did cost about $90 just to get the system looked at which I was not expecting at the time. I would suggest them if you need someone quickly, but it might cost you a little bit more.

He suggested that I text Tim from Stonelink. I did that and I got a very quick response. Tim indicated that he was in my town and he could stop by and take a look. He did and made a quick diagnosis of what we needed. He showed me how I could fix it myself, but I think when he saw the look on my face he decided it would be good to call one of his plumbers on staff. Victor arrived very quickly as well. He could not have been nicer, kinder or more professional, same as Tim. Both of those gentlemen treated me like we were neighbors and have been friends for a long time. Anytime you're dealing with plumbing, you know that it could go badly either in terms of what you need or how much it's going to cost. But in both cases, this entire experience went as well as it possibly could. I very much appreciate Tim and Victor and I have a new plumber going forward. I can't recommend them any higher. This is the easiest decision I'll ever make in the future.

JN Service - The crew installing my new water heater

Overpriced and incompetent…read more This company has worked on my house 5+ times over the last month, amassing to nearly $10k, and each time they come, a new problem arises, each problem costing more. Most recently, they came to repair a leaking pipe, and left the same day after subsequently cutting/breaking multiple pipes in my basement, leaving our entire home without water. They even assured me before leaving that I would at least have cold water, then were surprised when I showed them they left me without any water at all. They came back only with a quote for whole home repiping, and not even a quote for just fixing the local spot of damage. I have now had three separate plumbing companies inspect and evaluate the situation after this, and all of them are in agreement: 1. JN Service made poor technical decisions in trying to fix the pipes, in addition to the state they left the piping, and separately in the way they installed my water heater. 2. It's concerning that JN Service didn't even provide a quote for fixing the local issue, and only provided a quote for a full-home repiping. The interpretations are ranging from bad-practice, to predatory. 3. The whole-repiping quote from JN Services was severely overpriced, and it was additionally concerning given that the initial quote had no information/line items besides just listing the rooms in my house that would be involved in the repiping. It wasn't until I pressed JN Service, that they gave a quote with more extensive information. All in all, I will never work with this company again. I recommend others never work with them. There are other companies that provide better competency at better prices.

The tech told me i need a new compressor fan, it was hot out, and our bedrooms are upstairs. I paid the $1500. They came and replaced the fan motor and left. I still wasn't getting any cooling. I also noticed that the fan outside was working intermittently. This was due to a "Delay" on my Nest thermostat, this is typically caused when something in the system isn't working correctly. I looked at the fan closely and noticed a wire was touch the blade. Called up JN and they came out and fixed the wire. My cooling issue isn't resolved so I call again. They send two people this time. They spent sometime in the attic looking at the unit, and then tell me that my unit is undersized. They said I need a 3-Ton unit and my unit is only 1.5 Tons. They gave me a quote. $8,000 for a new indoor and outdoor unit. I didn't want to call BS to their face, so I played dumb and said I'd get back to them. (I recently purchased the house and the inspector listed the sizes of the units in the report, and I confirmed by the model numbers on the units) I called another company they came and determined two things: I have a small leak, and the compressor is on its way out. They fixed the leak, and replaced the compressor. My system works as good as new. Leaving 1 star because I called Junior, and he refunded $150 of the $1900 I spent on JN services. Junior appears to be a nice guy on the phone, but I think the techs need some more training to troubleshoot systems instead of jumping to a conclusion saying the fan isn't working. AND the guy who tried to sell me the same sized unit I already had by saying it was half the size it was, should probably not be allowed to be a salesman. That's straight up lying and illegal.
