I'll start with the good: 1. Techs are always friendly and courteous 2. Customer service phone service is always great 3. They generally do an okay job with the maintenance Now for the not-so-great... 1. They will absolutely fleece you on anything your purchase. Their flat rates are roughly 1.5-2.5x higher than most other competitors, and if you compare quotes with smaller, local companies, it can be on the higher end of 2.5x or more expensive. For example, I received a quote for a tanked water heater for $5900 and $8900 for a tankless. I shopped quotes and found the average for tankless was ~$3000 and tankless was ~$4500. I confronted them on the asinine price, and they bumped it down to $4500 and $8300, respectively. The same goes for a fix for the furnace. I was quoted ~$1000 for a part that was under warranty (and not the actual fix). I shopped around and found that the proposed fix averaged $300-750, but the actual fix was ~$100. 2. There are no itemized breakdowns of parts, labor, or items that you are quoted for or purchasing. 3. They are sales-first. They'll get you and you'll think you won't have another option. Their techs or service managers will attempt to upsell you on repairs you may or may not need 4. I'd say there's about a 50% chance that they'll cancel or reschedule your maintenance visit that you scheduled, and you won't find out until you hit your scheduled maintenance window for service 5. I found that they didn't perform combustion tests on my furnace or vacuum out any of the hoses/condenser ports. I only knew after I had someone come compare quotes on the suggested repair 6. I found that their suggested repair wasn't actually what the issue was, and that the actual fix was much cheaper than what they wanted to do I wouldn't recommend their actual job services and would highly recommend shopping around. Their prices are far from transparent and they have no qualms about fleecing their customers. Their maintenance package ($50/month) is okay, but I found other maintenance packages for $20-$30/month. You can search reddit or other forums for what people have to say, but my experience seems to harmonize with what others have said. Other companies and contractors also seem to cringe when you mention their name, which is generally not a great feeling. read more

UPDATE: After months of trouble with our previous oil company, GEM initially felt like a huge step up. Harrison came out expecting to be working on a gas system despite us telling the dispatcher we have an oil system. He and made a real effort to help us. But we were expecting him to give a quote and instead handled most of the major issues the same day. Or so we thought... His initial repair ultimately took three more separate visits to get right. The issues we ran into after the first visit could have been avoided if the initial work had been completed correctly, but I appreciate that GEM honored their warranty and kept coming back without charging us extra. The final technician, Steven, was the one who fully resolved everything. He corrected the earlier mistakes, updated the piping, bled the system properly, and fixed problems that had been building for years, even parts that weren't effected by the initial repair were replaced to ensure efficiency and to avoid further damage to the system. Our heat now works better than it ever has, and Steven genuinely deserves five stars. Because of the multiple visits and avoidable setbacks, I can't give the company a full five stars, but I'm grateful for the Steven seeing it through! read more

While most of their technicians do a good job, I have to give GEM a mixed rating: 1. Their prices can be outrageous; e.g., $500 labor charge for 15 minutes installing a $125 replacement thermostat, when other electricians charge $100-150. They quoted me $6,000 for a job that I had performed by someone else for $3,600. 2. They have a terrible front office. They never bother to call to alert you that the tech will be hours late, they never leave or e-mail an itemized invoice for work performed, and they frequently give incorrect information to the tech about what service needs to be performed, wasting my time and the tech's. EXTORTION! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! I had a refrigerant leak in my whole house heat pump system. Gem came and refilled the coolant and charged over $800. They also added UV dye to find the leak, and said they should come back in a few months to track down the leak. All the coolant they added was gone (and the heat was not working again) in less than two days. Gem came out again and identified the leak in the curve of a copper pipe. They quoted almost $10,000 (!!!) to replace the line and refill the coolant. Another company came and did it for $1,800. Half of the price they quoted (almost $5k) was for the cost of the coolant, which shows that they put a MASSIVE mark-up on it. This made me realized that they had probably overcharged us for that $800 coolant refill -- which did not fix the problem anyway -- so I wanted to file a complaint and get my money back. But I couldn't because (get this!) THEY DON'T HAVE AN EMAIL ADDRESS. You can only call them. What kind of reputable company doesn't have an email address? I think that tells you everything you need to know about them. read more

Horrible service. Every year, I schedule my maintenance appointment well in advance, just as they request. The day before the appointment, I receive multiple confirmations by text and email, only to get a call on the day of service telling me they need to reschedule. This isn't a one-time occurrence--it's the second year in a row that this has happened. However, they never seem to have any problem collecting my service contract payment on time. The real kicker is that they proactively reached out to me this winter to schedule these services months in advance, only to cancel them at the last minute anyway. Stay away from this company! The technician came out and repaired my AC. After the work was completed, he initially quoted me $520, including the diagnostic fee. I explained that I had been told GEM would waive the $150 diagnostic fee for first time customers. He confirmed that and adjusted the total to $370. A couple of minutes later, after going outside, he came back in and suddenly said he had "forgotten" an additional part that was supposedly necessary to keep the system running, bringing the total to $595. It seemed very suspicious that after the work was already completed and the unit was running properly, this extra "required" part conveniently appeared -- especially right after the price had been lowered because of the credit. I contacted the company to express my concerns, but they told me there was nothing they would do. Do not use GEM ever. You are better off learning how to do plumbing/hvac yourself than hiring these jokers. We had a leak in our gas boiler it was still operating when they arrived. When they left they said they needed parts someone would call and they had shit off the boiler. We called every 3 days and received the same we are waiting for parts still response. After 3 WEEKS someone came to install said parts....they were the wrong parts and we had to wait another week for the correct ones to come in. At the end of all this we were charged also $6000!!! The opaque bill made it hard to determine where we were being overcharged and calling them led to not being able to talk to anyone who could answer billing questions. I had a very disappointing experience with GEM Plumbing & Heating regarding a furnace repair in Pawtucket. I called Friday (Jan 2nd) morning for same-day service and was told a technician would arrive between 8am-4pm, with a call ahead. I waited at the property all day. At 3:45pm I called to check in and was then told the visit would be delayed until 5-7pm. At 6:30pm I received another call saying the technician was coming from Narragansett and would arrive in about 45 minutes. He ultimately arrived around 7:30pm. The technician performed some voltage checks and told me the issue involved the ignitor and flame sensing. He then quoted a total repair cost of $1,575, without breaking down parts vs. labor. I was shocked, especially given that this was for a furnace without a pilot and what appeared to be a basic ignition issue. When I asked for a breakdown, I was told GEM does not disclose that information. I declined the repair and paid the $149 diagnostic fee. The following day, I hired a small local HVAC company. Within 15 minutes, they diagnosed the issue as a clearly broken hot surface ignitor. The part cost $30 and the total repair--including diagnosis and installation--was $190. The system has worked perfectly since. I'm adding a picture of the hot surface ignitor. Given that the failed ignitor was visibly damaged once removed, I am left questioning how GEM arrived at a $1,575 quote, or whether unnecessary components would have been replaced. Either way, the pricing was completely out of line with the actual repair needed. I understand and accepted the diagnostic fee policy at the time of booking, but given the incorrect or grossly disproportionate repair recommendation, I believe the $149 diagnostic charge should be refunded. In this case, I don't think they earned it. If they refund this amount to me, I'll update this review, otherwise, beware that if a GEM truck parks in front of your house, you will be charge $149 even if their diagnosis is incorrect or wildly disproportionate to the actual repair. Also beware that they do not have transparent pricing. They give you one price, without breaking it down for parts and labor. When I questioned the price, the technician told me he has to go with whatever the iPad tells him and there is nothing he can do about pricing. Unfortunately, this experience cost me an entire day of waiting, followed by a quote that bore no resemblance to the real repair. I cannot recommend GEM based on this experience. read more

For nine months, I have received nothing but "we are on it" and "let us get back to you" emails while the safety risk to my property remains. My warranty is nearing its end, and the lack of urgency for a hazardous situation is unprofessional and dangerous. I have been a longtime customer with an annual contract, but this latest experience makes me question that. We had a faucet that wasn't working and the tech came to fix it-which he did. Shortly after he left we realized he had sat on and cracked a toilet seat. We contacted the company and they sent the tech back to our house. He denied damaging the seat and got confrontational. He was asked to leave. I called the company multiple times to ask to speak with a manager and was told one would call me. I have not gotten any response. We spent a small fortune to have a new heat pump installed after our AC unit died. The system lasted less than 72 hours before it abruptly stopped working. We were told a tech would be able to come out to repair it only for them to cancel and say they needed to push it to the next morning. We were told we would be first thing and given an 8-12 window. The tech didn't show until 3:30pm. Did a couple things and then left. This time the system didn't last 48 hours. A tech came out again and said there was corrosion on a sensor that is supposedly brand new. Of course the tech didn't have the part and said we would be his first stop the next day. We got a text that he was on his way but now it's been over 2 hours and he still isn't here. Our house is literally 85 degrees inside. For the amount of money we spent on this, I am extremely disappointed in the quality of service, lack of communication and that we were obviously given a used product. Avoid using GEM! read more

My HVAC was had a leak and was out of refrigerant, I let the tech know I already knew the system was dry and just needed the leak repaired. He insisted on making sure it was empty and then told me the leak was on the outside lines which I knew it wasn't there. I said I didn't want their service after this but I still owed 800 dollars. Had another company come out that was able to identify the leak, in the ATTIC not the outside lines and repair it for about the same price as their diagnostics. Requested a service call, and scheduled from 12-4. The company confirmed the time before the day of the appointment. Guess what, they didn't come during that time frame. At 5 pm, my wife called, and they said they were running late and would be at my address in a short while. The company called at 7:45 PM asking if I'd like them to come or reschedule. The unprofessionalism of not calling the customer at 4 pm or earlier to notify a customer that they will not be able to make a scheduled appointment in today's age crazy. We had a steam heating boiler installed by GEM in OCT 2025. It was sized too small by GEM. They did agree to replace it with a larger size boiler, which they did. The new boiler (3-day old) keeps cycling on & off and the radiators do not get fully hot. Also there is a whistling (because of a defective controller). GEM said they would be back the next day - NO SHOW - NO CALL. So far we are not satisfied with the follow up service by GEM. I don't know if they have anyone qualified or experienced to work on steam boilers. *By the way, our old steam boiler worked fine and was properly sized, we replaced it because it was 20 yrs old and was starting to leak. read more

Extremely angry at the fact that their A/C tech took advantage of a situation..I had to go to work and my wife was home when he arrived over an hour later than they projected. He (Jason C) never told her much it was going cost to change a Capacitor on a Amana A/C condenser. He changed it, gave her the bill and left! We expected $150 service fee, but the whole bill came out to $1010!! For 15 minutes of work, for a Capacitor that costs $16 on Amazon or $31 at Ace Hardware... the exact same Capacitor! That is a huge mark up and completely unnecessary on taking advantage of a woman. If he would have told her how much it was going to cost? She would've said absolutely not, I have called to complain and spoke to a Shirley (she was nice!) but so far nothing has come out of this situation. I will be contacting the BBB and maybe even go further. I have noticed that on many reviews this has happened before to many people that deal with GEM, they completely lost my trust and respect and of course my business. I will not stop until this is resolved! I will rewrite my review every day if I have too! This can't happen again and should not happen to people who put their trust in a business that supposedly has integrity. It's been 2 weeks now! Well, let's see. Weird things happening with my A/C, moisture detector seems to be shutting it down. They couldn't figure out the issue, so I said I was fine just replacing the moisture detector (which was part of GEM's installation of the whole A/C just three years ago). First quote: $1,000. I said no thanks. After going around in circles, the quote was down to $550. "Significant discount. Best we can do, it's an expensive part. It's like a little computer." I declined again (numerous times actually). So out of curiosity I searched online for that "expensive part." I found the Diversitech flood detector model WS-1 (which is what I currently have) for $65 on Amazon. They wanted to charge me $1,000 for putting that in. Paid $149.00 for that system check. If it turns out that sensor does need to be replaced, I can tell you who I WON'T be calling. GEM. read more

Very dissatisfied. Had a heat pump installed by Gem 3 years ago that has already run out of warranty and stopped working as of last night. I called for emergency service and they said they will get out as soon as they can. It has been 8 hours since I called, the temperature went into the negatives overnight and still no one has reached out. They also charge more for weekend calls even though they do not rush to take care of you in an emergency. Unfortunately I could not find another company that works on heat pumps so I have no other choice but to use them. I would never recommend this company for any service. Around late November 2024 I called Gems plumbing for a routine boiler cleaning. A new kid was sent out. I mean so new he was on the phone with people non stop to help him. He said I listed my service as a furnace cleaning and I had a boiler, he had to reschedule because he did not have the brush or vacuum needed to do the work. Insane. So he rescheduled for the next day. Next day he calls, and can't clone out to the job but would have to reschedule again for next week. Next week comes, boilers running great just needs a cleaning, this kid disasambles everything and cleans it, puts it back together and can't get the boiler to stop leaking gas back into the house. They tell me there is no boot on top of the heat exchanger and try to cement one. Previous to this there was fire period insulation to do the job with NO gas leaks. He calls a senior guy in and they whisper together, I hear the senior guy tell him he messed up and with these boilers you need to pack it with rock insulation. He then turns to me and tells me I need a new boiler. They quote me 12k lol. I installed my new boilers myself for 3,500 cause I used to do these I just didn't want to. I didn't want to clean mine out of laziness and thought I'd give someone business to save my back. Wrong idea. Gems has some great mechanics, then they have new kids they send out on jobs not knowing what the hell to do. If I wasn't in a rush to get a new boiler in that day I would have asked my lawyer to come by and would be during them right now. My warning, when they show up. Ask them some questions about there experience. If they look young. Idc if it's bias. Send them away and call someone else. $900 for a cleaning and I was left with a boiler that was broken. Showed up to my grandmother's house to check a leak in the dishwasher. Tech was in the house for about 45 minutes. He shut off the valve to the dishwasher and cut a hole in the basement ceiling for the water to drain and then sat outside the house for another 45 minutes. Charged her $509 for the call. I questioned it and was basically told too bad and that she should have been charged another $149 for a call fee. Sounds like elder abuse to me. read more

GEM will kill you to avoid doing warranty work. GEM replaced a boiler on 12/02/22 with a defective model that was leaking 120+ PPM carbon monoxide (safe level is 5 PPM), waited until it was no longer covered by warranty, tried a repair they knew wouldn't work, refused to come recheck the leak even though they knew a pregnant woman was in the house, and then wouldn't honor their warranty. GEM will only honor their warranty if they service the boiler so I scheduled the annual service in September 2023 but even three months in advance they wouldn't come until 12/12/23, after the warranty expired. The tech noted that the boiler was leaking 50-80 PPM CO before the service. December 5th, 2024 the tech found the boiler was now leaking 100+ PPM so he put some concrete on the cracks in the boiler. The tech told the tenant and his pregnant wife it was safe but would take a few days to harden and stop the leak. GEM refused to make another call out to the house to check their repair work for three weeks "because the concrete needs time to cure." When they finally showed up three weeks later they confirmed they were getting a reading of 500 PPM. Project Manager Rob Farland said he didn't know why the tech tried to patch it because that wouldn't work and that a new boiler would be needed. GEM Department Manager Eric Pelaquin refused because the boiler was now out of warranty and "did me a favor" by only charging for the boiler and not labor. Rob Farland also said it would qualify for a RI Energy rebate, however the model they installed didn't meet the minimum energy efficiency standards and therefore didn't qualify for the rebate. read more

My heating unit was broken in the middle of winter. I was not able to contact my guy and called GEM. They charged around $500 to come there and identify the problem.
