Gens is either a hit or miss, and this past visit was probably the best service I ever received. Pearlridge has always been the most promising location in my eyes, and even then sometimes service isn't the greatest. However, this past visit, server Jayde was absolutely outstanding! Very bubbly and easy to talk to, and everything came out so smoothly! She didn't forget anything at all. She's also a very effective communicator, when something was out of stock or there was a delay she was very quick to address it so we weren't left hanging. I did feel a little bad because the girl was serving a lot of tables, but even then she kept a great attitude and was always smiling! Will definitely be back again. read more

We came here to celebrate my grandson's birthday. He was so excited and so were we. It was around 3:30 and it was slow, but we were promptly greeted. I asked for a table rather than a booth and they accommodated us. Our waiter was so friendly and personable. They were not able to make a Shirley Temple for my grandson's, but the waiter got the bartender to throw something together for my grandson. There was a lot of great selections and we enjoyed everything we ordered. My grandson loved the KFC, my daughter inhaled the Jap chae and we all enjoyed the honey chicken, sweet garlic beef belly, bulgogi, and everything else we grilled. Our 2nd time there since they opened. We entered at 445pm not that crowded. Maybe 1/5 of full. Still smoky an oily smoky. Floors felt oily as well. Under our table it felt like there was oil there and didn't seem clean. Music was at a volume of maybe 7 out of 10. Kinda loud. Wasn't a background music it was more blaring in your face music that would cause you to eat faster just to get away. We had an amazing waitress take care of us. Her name is Julie. Very personable, sweet, kneeled to talk with us at our height. Throughout our meal she was very attentive and replaced our grate 3x. She should be a trainer. The meats, of course, are the highlight and they didn't disappoint. The calamari was way overcooked probably refried as well as the gyoza. The banchan also seemed old. The rice was fantastic as well as the salad. If all you want is meat and salad and rice. This is the place. We noticed that the air suction of the "Hoods" seemed nonexistent as we could see smoke bypassing them. Upon leaving we were so happy to have fresh air. We have had this Yakiniku in Korea and in Koreatown in LA and they have snorkels as air suction that actually do an amazing job. Not at Gen. We did not have a good experience at this location. There was rice under the table that was sticky under my feet. The menu were greasy. The server kept forgetting our napkins and drinks. And our plates were all chipped. This was just the service and environment. The menus were incorrect so the waiter kept having to say we don't have that etc. The popcorn chicken was almost completely breading with barely any chicken. Then after dinner my husband got sick. (He didn't eat anything earlier that could have made him sick and he was the only one that ate two of the meat choices that must have made him sick). On a personal preference note, there is no indicator of how much meat comes on each tray so we ended up with huge amounts of one type of meat instead of small portions of several types. I honestly really love Gen Korean BBQ because the food is so good. That's the main reason I keep coming back. Unfortunately, the service has consistently been disappointing. Every time I visit, it feels like asking for something simple like extra chopsticks, napkins, or even a water refill is an inconvenience to the staff. We've often had to ask multiple times just to get our waters refilled. During my most recent visit, the servers also kept placing plates of raw meat directly in front of my 8-month-old baby, who immediately started reaching for it. It was frustrating because we had to keep moving everything out of his reach. I really do enjoy the food and want to keep supporting this place, but I hope the customer service improves because it would make such a huge difference in the overall experience. read more

I flag him down to ask again and he says "we actually just ran out" which is fine if I knew 20 minutes prior. Then, Donna runs our food and hands it to us with raw meat juice dripping off of it and we try to ask her if we can order something else. She says "tell your server" with a bit of an attitude. Worst experience ever Did takeout.. Couldnt do it online because it wouldnt let me select 4 of the same meats so had to do it in person. Manager (im assuming based on attire) was super helpful. Was told 20-25 min. 40 min later 2 servers finally hand carry my takeout containers from the kitchen up to the host stand. The haole girl proceeds to drop a container on the ground, right in front of me, and pick it back up like nothing and place it on the counter. Thankfully it didnt open or idk what she wouldve done then.... On top of all that she had the meanest RBF. def not someone who should be working anything related to hospitality. Fast forward Get home. Carrying the bag to my house, whole thing rips open from the bottom. Because why? The container she dropped is completely cracked so all the vinegar and water from the radish wraps is all over everything including the bottom of the paper bag. Luckily all containers survived and i didnt lose any food. Salad also had no dressing. And we got no sauces for our meat. Its cheaper to dine in than pay $80 for a terrible experience. My sister and her family love this restaurant. There was a newer location that opened near them but they still prefer to drive further to this location. This time, we had a party of seven (4 adults + 2 kids + 1 baby). We got there at around 5 on a Saturday and waited maybe about 10 minutes. Our waitress seemed nice but she must have been new because she was kind of terrible. She didn't even know how to start our grill (turns out you need to add water first so that you don't start a grease fire, which she wasn't aware of. Kind of concerning). She would forget a lot of items, we'd have to ask for items multiple times (including basics like water or utensils), and she would constantly bring out incorrect items). Our grate was also never changed (again, probably due to lack of training) until we asked, since some of our meats were starting to taste burnt. Avoid the cooked menu items. The kimchi fried rice and japchae were terrible. Stick to the meats. My top three dishes were still the Hawaiian steak, honey soy beef belly, and pork cheek. So it's nice to see that at least the quality of the meats have remained the same. It just seems like they might have a really high turnover rate and waiters don't receive adequate training, probably due to that fact. Half of our group had never been to a Korean BBQ before so we asked for some guidance and our server was happy to recommend some popular meat options. We tried the spicy calamari and everyone that tried it liked it. I don't think there was anything we didn't like. The pork belly was sliced thicker than I'm used to so it wasn't a favorite. The food was great as always and our waiter was excellent. Only reason not a five star review was the young waitress bringing our food decided to carry two plates of meat with meat juice and marinade over my head from behind me. Don't know why she didn't go to the side, but as she was overhead, she tilted one or both plates. I'm not sure. We had family members that was visiting and they had never been to Gen BBQ. So we decided to bring them there. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a lovely host bame Miya. She was very pleasant and kept checking in the back of the house to see if there was a table ready for us. Our server was Jaymie. Again super friendly. She was very attentive to all our needs....bringing us napkins, water with being asked....and she brought us all kinds condiments, and requests that our son in law asked for. Visited on a Sunday night with family and it was a bit of a letdown. We arrived around 8:30 PM, and about half the menu was sold out. I understand it was late on a Sunday, but it was surprising that so many items were unavailable. The waiter even asked if we wanted to upgrade to the premium option, but even then we still would not have been able to get several of the regular items. Some items were pretty good, like the calamari and brisket, although you can usually never go wrong with brisket. Other items were not as impressive. The server was also a bit clumsy and forgot a couple of things during the meal. The restaurant itself is large and can accommodate a lot of people and big parties. I have heard it can get very busy, but when we went it was fairly empty. Overall, I feel like there are better KBBQ spots than this one. read more

When we went in our waiter tells us he will be back in 5 min. He came back in 15 min just as we were going to get up and leave. Should have left. He acted like he didn't want to be there. Then he just left a pitcher on the table. As we were getting up to leave he walks up and says "Do you want these sides?" What an ass. I've been to this location before and usually have a great experience, but this visit was honestly disappointing. When we arrived, about half of the restaurant was closed off, and one server, Janelle, was handling the entire open section. She seated us and took our initial order, which included meats, krazy sauce, and calamari rings. The calamari took around 20 minutes to come out, and when it finally did, it was cold. It was obvious it had been sitting out for a while instead of being served fresh. From there, the service only got worse. It was extremely difficult to get Janelle's attention because she consistently prioritized larger parties and would walk past our table quickly without checking on us. Not once did she come by to ask if we needed anything or wanted to order more. We had to call her over every time. I ordered the krazy sauce twice, and both times she forgot it. There were also no grill changes at all, even though we saw her changing grills for other tables. Meanwhile, our grill was burning, and we couldn't get her attention to fix it. When we placed our second round of orders (2 premium steaks and 2 honey soy beef belly), the steaks came out quickly, but the beef belly took about 15 minutes. During that time, our grill was burning and we were already getting annoyed that our server didn't come to check on us. Because of that, we turned off the grill and decided we were done eating. Of course, the honey soy beef belly arrived right after that. At that point, I asked to speak to a manager. A food runner named Kyle helped us. He was very kind, apologetic, and professional, even though the situation wasn't his fault. He brought out the manager, Hoku, and this is where the experience became even more frustrating. Hoku did not come across as helpful or apologetic in any way. She didn't greet us properly, didn't ask what the issue was, and showed no urgency or concern. Instead of trying to understand or resolve the situation, she seemed dismissive and uninterested from the start. Her body language and facial expression made it feel like she had already judged the situation before even hearing us out. I had to explain everything without any meaningful response from her. There was no apology, no acknowledgment of the poor service, and no effort to make things right. To make matters worse, she didn't even communicate basic information like our total. I had to ask for it myself. For someone in a management position, the lack of professionalism, accountability, and customer care was very disappointing. They initially tried to charge us for the honey soy beef belly we didn't even get to cook, but eventually removed it. However, considering the overall poor service and lack of management support, I would have expected some kind of additional accommodation. Overall, the service was slow, inattentive, and frustrating. Janelle seemed overwhelmed and unable to manage her section, and the manager handled the situation very poorly. The only positive part of this experience was Kyle, who genuinely tried to help. It's disappointing because I've had great experiences here before, but this visit definitely lowered my impression of this location. If this is how service is when it's not even busy, I can only imagine how it is during peak hours. If a server can't handle all the tables in their section, let alone properly take care of a party of two, they should not be responsible for that many tables at once. Went for lunch on a Saturday. Found out Fri/Sat/Sun is dinner menu/prices all day... we didn't know. Server number 1 was a bit slow but nice and courteous. She explained the process well. It took a while for our dishes. Took a while for our grill to be replaced, it was charring and smoking and not pleasant. They simply grab it with tongs and walk is with it. Hmmm. Not good if it drips on the floor... Server number 2 made up for it with awesome service and our dishes came out quickly. Food was good to excellent. Bulgogi had some chewy sinewy sections but was tasty. Pork belly was great. Thick bacon was great. Calamari steak amazing. Steak was good. Spicy pork yummy. Popcorn chicken yummy. Honey chicken was good. Asst veggies were ok. First platter didn't have mushrooms and zucchini was way too thin. Second player had mushrooms and zucchini was sliced a little thicker. Bell peppers should have been sliced better. Korean mochi with sweet paste inside was awesome. Our booth had a drippy AC above my seat. When we were seated, I thought it was damp because they had wiped down the seat. Wrong. Drip, drip every so often through the meal. May be why the second server asked is we wanted to move but by then we were settled and had started eating. Drinks are refillable. Would have been 4 stars if our first server had done better and the AC wasn't dropping on me. Tips: Don't dress up. You will leave smelling like smoke and bbq. Ask for daikon wrappers. Pickled, very thinly sliced, and you put your cooked food in it taco style. Awesome! Overall a great experience but go on a weekday for lunch for lunch prices if you can. It was a terrible experience when you have a hard time getting a hold of your server. We won't ever come during those times. We went on a weeknight and service was wonderful. We didn't realize they have carne Asada tacos and adobada here where they bring you small tortillas to make tacos! It was a surprising flair to the Korean flavors. We also had the cheesy Katsu which I thought was a great appetizer. Don't get the kimchi fried rice- very mushy and super sweet. We love the sauces and matcha salt that they offer and the Banchans have great flavor. Best time to come is during lunch when you pay less than dinner prices! Whenever I'm looking for parking at Pearlridge, I always see a lot of people outside of Gen waiting to be seated in the restaurant. When I found their gift cards sold at Costco for 20% off ($79.99 for $100), I immediately bought it to treat my family. Informed them that we'll have an early dinner around 5pm so we won't have to fight the crowd...it worked! We were lucky to find good parking, no line outside and got seated right away...awesome! Our waiter gave us a few minutes to look over the menu. After giving him our order, the food came out pretty fast. When the restaurant got busier, the service was slower as expected but they made sure our grill was changed when it started getting black. I'm not sure what meats were ordered because my kids did all the ordering. All I know is my husband and I enjoyed it. It was tasty AND the kids did all the cooking...yay! I've done here a few times and my last experience was the best one yet. The server that helped us was the great. Very helpful and concerned. He felt like he wasn't helping us enough so he literally cut up my bone in steak before I even started cooking it. He was a very cheerful and great communication. As for the food and drinks it's always great. We decided to go with the most expensive premium menu. It seems pricey but it is worth it if you are super hungry and a mission to eat everything you can till you can't no more. This place is a bitt cold for kids without any jackets on. We stopped in for lunch and ordered pork belly, which was thick and yummy; two orders of beef bulgogi, and veggies, garlic and oil, and choke kimchi. Oh, and Sundubu soup and rice, which was my favorite as far as all the flavors. Placing the garlic in the oil and making one of the beef orders extra crispy fried in garlic was delish. The veggies didn't arrive until we were done eating and the AC was WAY too cold. Otherwise, good food and friendly service. The restaurant is enormous. It is at a mall and is a chain, so I assume it is very popular. They have a full bar. Usually go in-person with the service being hit or miss but at least the food is consistently good because we cook it ourselves and eating til my opu stay hur10. Anyways, I decided to order takeout tonight and got (2) 4 meats and 3 sides plate at $29 each including japchae and cucumber kimchi. I thought it would come with the side sauces for free so didn't think to add it in but looking it up now it's $1 per. This is what 4 meats look like with the side japchae and 1 scoop rice. I got 4 honey soy beef belly and 2 Hawaiian steak/2 garlic chicken. Brah look the chicken so burnt and it's all just tiny burnt pieces barely any actual chicken so I cannot give the kids now. We're used to the slow service here at Gens but this time we received slow service and raw pork tonkatsu. The manager did nothing to remedy the situation. Then they charge my son as an adult, so I tell him that he's 9. The waiter said ok and walked away and then I'm pretty sure the manager told the waiter to ask my son. So the waiter came back and asked my son if he's sure that he's 9?! Like wtf. I pulled out my son's birth certificate real quick to prove it. My husband took a bite of this raw pork that was supposed to be cooked. They should have honored the half price for my son regardless. Ridiculous. read more

Was looking for a well known place to eat that could accommodate a decent amount of people after my sons high school graduation. My party was 25 I needed a place that was open after the ceremony in the evening. Boy did GEN come thru!! It goes without saying how delicious the food was but the fact that our prime choices of meat was already waiting for us when we arrived!! Special shout out to Simon ( site manager ) who helped guide me thru the reservations and selecting the meat choices!! Well done sir! Our server, or should I call her choreographer Janelle was simply AMAZING!! She hustled her booty off and helped guide the other wait staff team to keep things moving, food was coming in at us at all angles and was truly a joy to have with us.. she was top notch and you can tell how sincere she is taking her job to heart. Hope she never leaves because she is a true asset to any dining establishment.. Kudos also to the wait staff that was hustling as well.. never did I ever see any of us looking for water refills or fresh trays of meat to cook.. they were simply on it!! All of my guests were truly impressed and commented that our graduation dinner was probably the best idea anyone could have come up with.. for that, I am so relieved!! My coworkers wanted to go for lunch. I guess it's not so crowded for lunch as we were seated pretty quickly. You pay one price and order your plates. It's cook your own style. I got full pretty quickly. The one thing I wish they had was salad. I'm not sure if I got my $20 worth as I don't eat very much. But it's a nice place to go with a group. read more

Came a little after opening. We were seated immediately and it was fairly empty. You could kind of tell they just opened because there was only one server and he was trying to get the setups and drinks for everyone. One more workers started showing up, things started moving faster. Service was a bit slow, but the server did his best to bring drinks and take orders. I felt bad for him as he had to take care of about 10 tables (most with large parties of 8+) by himself with no additional support. However, he still did his best to give great service and was friendly. One the food came out, things were good. Portions were good and the cuts of meat were also good. My favorite was the woo baesal (thinly sliced beef belly) The place felt greasy and needs a deep degreasing clean and some of the plates and dishware were chipped and skewed signs of heavy use. Overall, I would come back if I am craving KBBQ, but will probably come a little later after opening to ensure staff are all at work and ready to work. read more
