It was date night and the portion sizes with the meat were still too much for us to share (which is a good thing)! Ha! We had the pork belly, premium wagyu, and ribeye! This is a restaurant in my first visit. I've been to several grid barbecue restaurants in this little different. Other restaurants there was a bar filled many types of meat, seafood, vegetables, etc., that you will select from and bring back to your table to prepare on the grill. Here you select the meat from a menu in which they served the meat from to the table. There are so many options. For a set price it's all you can eat, which includes cooked appetizers and meat selections. The quality of the food and service was great. The restaurant is dimly lit, clean and lightly decorated. SOFT OPENING REVIEW: GEN KOREAN BBQ IN EL PASO We finally tried Gen KBBQ during their soft opening -- and here's everything you need to know before you go: Pricing Lunch AYCE (Monday-Thursday until 3PM): $20.95 (34 items) Dinner AYCE (after 3PM, weekends, and holidays): $31.95 (47 items) Premium AYCE: Add $20 for wagyu, short ribs, and other upgraded cuts Our total for two with Premium and appetizers came out to $118 -- well worth it for the amount and quality of food. There's a 2-hour limit per table, and everyone must order from the same menu tier. It's fair and helps keep things moving for other diners. What We Loved Chadol (brisket) Pork Jowl Wagyu Sweet Garlic Short Ribs Beef Belly and Short Plate The sweet garlic marinade paired with the sesame soy dipping sauce was absolutely delicious. There were no rice paper wraps (due to supply issues), but the pickled radish worked just fine. We also missed the steamed egg -- likely removed due to high egg prices, which is understandable. Service The staff was friendly and attentive. Most of them were corporate trainers, but they're actively working to train local hires. So my wife and I had just returned from LV and visited this restaurant up there and enjoyed it so we anticipated the locale here. Our son even asked if we were going to the soft opening but due to work we didn't make it until I returned. We went during lunch and it wasn't crazy packed, we were quickly seated and since we knew how it worked we were eager to eat. We had a great team of servers taking care of us and they made sure we never lacked drinks, food condiments or protein and it was so so good. We ate till we couldn't eat and rolled out of there so content. We highly recommend this restaurant and hopefully you experience great service as well. At the end of the day, this place is all about the meats they have available- truthfully, the meats were subpar. An example would be the beef belly, which suddenly comes apart as you cook it, which may indicate the lower quality. Comparing the quality to other franchises, this wasn't as great and it left me disappointed. We stuck with the regular menu since the additional cost of upgrading to the premium tier (when the only worthwhile meat to us there was the wagyu) didn't seem reasonable to us. There's a wide variety of options for meats, and the menus with pictures were helpful to our friends who preferred the visual guide. The side dishes (banchan) were about 4 at a time as well, when I usually see 6 or more at other AYCE KBBQ establishments. The service was pretty good though. I forgot his name, but our server was very thoughtful and didn't rush our group as we picked our 4 meat choices (that's the limit each round). All in all, if you're used to other KBBQ spots (like in LA or NY), this might not hit the spot. But if you're fine with meats as long as they keep coming, then this should be just the right place for you! read more

My family and I are visiting from California. We've eaten at other Gen Korean BBQ locations and were excited to try this one. I didn't realize we ended the soft opening, but it was a great experience. Our waiter was very attentive, the meat portion sizes were big, and all the food came out in a timely manner. My parents said this was the best Gen they've been to, so it's safe to say we had an enjoyable experience. The ambiance gives a nightclub environment, but it's clean and very spacious. I was confused on that, we were not ordering the unlimited option. So $31 for kimchi fried rice? Then we asked the waiter on another plate and Same answer. No difference in pricing. Yet, all you can eat meat for $31. It was a very nice environment and if you have the hours to spare the option is worth it, but it is not a place to drop in and order a ready made plate. We ended up leaving and going to another restaurant. A good option is Garlic 1% where you can order plates and come out quick before a movie. read more

We all tried their Premium menu which is an additional $20 to the base price of $33. The service was a little bit Chaotic, but Sean our server did a great job recommending different meat combination. The Korean Japchae was not authentic and frankly disappointing. The grill is slow at the beginning but overall works decently well. Gen offers a wide variety of grilling options, including thinly excellent sliced of beef brisket (Chadol), some marinated beef bulgogi- a classic, delicious bone-in short ribs (Yangyum Galbi), some beef belly (Woo Beasal), pork belly, marinated chickens and Cajun shrimps just to name a few. I loved their short ribs and Cajun shrimps. The place was really noisy; as every five minutes a group of server would come to clap and chant for a birthday occasion. A little bit too noisy for my taste. The business just opened 4 weeks ago and obviously there are still some kinks that need to be resolved. But this is a great addition to the El Paso Korean BBQ scene! After a couple of drinks and a decent tip I paid $280 for four people so not a cheap place. Very embarrassed this is supposedly korean. Food was the worst k bbq ever. Kimchee was disgusting and so was the rest of ban chan. Nothing tasted correct. Meat was cut very poorly and they all had a weird taste to it. Not sure what they use to marinade the meats but they were all different yet had a weird taste to it. Came to this restaurant with great expectations. It started off with a 20 minute wait at the front door for a restaurant that was only 70% full. I assumed it was because they were low on staff. When we finally got our seats another 10 to 15 minute wait. Again, probably due to short staffing.
