After not visiting for several years, I was excited to give this place another try, but unfortunately, the experience fell short of expectations. The first red flag was arriving to find the banchan and salad already sitting on the table. Everything was warm, which made it seem like it had been sitting out for a while rather than being freshly served. After placing our order, only part of the meal arrived. We eventually had to ask about the missing soup and japchae. When the soup finally came out, it was cold. We later learned the wrong bowl had been brought out. Once the correct soup arrived, it was piping hot, packed with flavor, and had just the right amount of spice, easily one of the highlights of the meal. My husband was especially disappointed to learn that the beef belly, the dish he specifically came for, was completely sold out...on a Friday night. The fried shrimp also came out cold, and the popcorn chicken was underwhelming. Thankfully, not everything missed the mark. GEN BBQ isn't really Korean BBQ to me--it's more like an Asian-style BBQ restaurant. The Korean dishes they advertise don't taste very authentic, especially the soups. If you're looking for traditional Korean flavors, this probably isn't the place. The meat quality was also inconsistent. Some cuts were decent, but others came out shredded or chopped up in a way they normally shouldn't be. I think they could definitely improve both the quality of the meat and the side dishes. The service was a bit slow, although our server was very kind and friendly. We ordered alcohol at the beginning of our meal, but it didn't arrive until after our food came out, and only because we reminded them. Overall, I'd rate the food 4.5/10 and the service 3/5. They give a complimentary salad and a sauce set composed of their signature soy sauce, sesame oil, and green tea sea salt. They also provide a set of banchan that go well with the meat and rice. Whenever I go here I always just order their bulgogi and galbi, which are always reliable and solid. I also tried some of their brisket and pork belly, which were good as well. I always make sure to order some rice paper on the side to pair with the meat, they have radish wraps as well. The meat wasn't good quality and I could tell by the apprentice, the tenderness of when you even cut it, the flavour especially of the pork etc. Even for its price, I feel like its quality was still not meeting its value or standard. The Japchae was also supposedly "house made" but as someone who makes it at home and as an experienced foodie, it was basically preprepped noodles and chopped peppers thrown on (not even cut well! It was just chunks of it). Even their house salad im skeptical if it is house made because they had house salad with the cut marinated lettuce but didn't have fresh lettuce on its own for me to eat it with the meat. I was asked to leave a review by the manager Josue. I came out around 740pm on a Saturday night for dinner for 2. It was pretty packed out wait time was about 35mins. We quickly grabbed 2 adult capri sun drinks from the bar lychee (I don't recommend should've swapped for something else) and lemon (our favorite). We took a stroll around downtown while we waited to be called. Once we got the call we were seated quickly, I noticed the cleaning staff ushering in at each table cleaning effectively after each guest. Alan, our server greeted us. Gen is not my first choice when it comes to KBBQ but I visited because it was my friend's birthday. We waited over an hour to get seated. My friend called at 5pm to reserve a 10-person table on a Thursday. The worker took down his name, number, and time. Our party tried to check-in for the 8:30pm reservation but they couldn't find our details. The 3 hosts up front, had no clue what they were doing. They asked the typical questions like if we called the right location, number and etc., which we gladly provided the call logs as proof. I asked for a manager and the host wearing the white long sleeve shirt claimed that, "it was his first day" and did not know who their manager was. "Jose", the one glasses and with no name tag like the others, end up giving me their name and claim that he worked in management. He tried to clear up the mistake by saying, "I don't know who took your reservation request but we only take reservations 24 hours prior". We would have understood that if they explained that earlier before our guests arrived so we could have planned accordingly. They had the contact number and could have called or texted BUT they failed to notify us. We had no choice but opt-in to the hour+ long waitlist since it would be harder to find another location. We got seated around 10pm, our party was pretty hungry. The server was nice even though it was also his "first day" at this location. But unlike other AYCE places, for example, Hongdae 33 - their meats were very dry and did not enough marbling. I typically enjoy gogi without any marinades so that was a disappointing. The food came out fast though even though some stuff took longer or was forgotten. The music and ambiance around us was decent. I don't write bad reviews for places but this experience was very excruciating and people should know. I chose not to take it out on the service and still tipped the 20%. Management did not make things right - there were no discounts, no upgrades, and no complimentary birthday item. The soy beef belly was solid, it had some good flavor to it. The hangjungsal was terrible, it was too fatty for my liking & it was beyond chewy. The angus beef was mid, just bland and boring but it was tendered. The beef bulgogi was as to expected. It was marinated to perfection & the cuts were thick. It was flavorful, tendered and melt in your mouth. That explains why I ordered it two more times; probably my favorite on the menu. Overall, it wasn't a bad experience but I was expecting more since I've been here before. The grills were also another problem, it just burns too fast & has the place smelling like smoke. The decor is modern, hip & trendy. The service as stated in the beginning was excellent. Will I come back?
