The short version of this review is that Dubu is a solid Korean Mom and Pop that offers familiar favorites in a laid back environment. This isn't a soju bar with load music or upscale interpretation of Korean cuisine. From the lamination on the menus to the traditional rice pot cookers that come table side, this is clearly something the owners put plenty of themselves into. It seems to connect with the intended crowd as the multiple groups of Koreans that followed in after us, are usually a good sign. The food is of good quality and offered variable spice levels on many of the dishes, so you are able to decide what type of experience you're going to have. The tteokbokki are plump and the sauce balances the tangy, spicy, and slightly sweet notes you're looking for. The kimchi pancake was plenty kimchi forward but ended up not having all the crispy texture you can get from the scallion pancake cousin they serve. I order the Glabi and enjoyed my seasoning that it came with, nothing much to say either way here. The soondubu soup was full of tofu and not all too spicy on the medium heat level. Really cool mom and pop spot that opened up on Richmond opposite the Costco. Parking in this plaza can be slightly tough. The staffing is fairly lean and the mom and pop of the store both are on duty and very friendly. The banchan game here is fairly limited; bean sprouts, fish cakes, kimchi, and pickled cucumber. The kimchi and fish cakes weren't my favorite from banchan I've had in Houston. We got the tteokbokki (3/5, the sauce was slightly bland, not sweet enough, but fairly spicy, the rice cake texture was good) and kimchi/ seafood pancake (3/5, the texture of the pancake was a bit wet and floppy, and missing a nice and oily, crisp) for appetizers. I got the galbi combo, which consists of grilled Korean short ribs with a bowl of rice, small bowl of tofu soup, and banchan. The beef short ribs, were fairly okay, honestly. The tofu in soup was tasty but the soup was also a bit light in flavor (3/5). The owners are super friendly; the food was very honestly, okay. Clean Korean cooking in a bustling atmosphere! We were looking for something warm and comforting on a gloomy and rainy day and this place did just the trick. Clean cooking that wasn't oily and allowed the flavors of all the ingredients to shine. The japchae was light and refreshing, yet hearty. They were able to accommodate spicy levels well and they didn't disappoint! The sundubu was spicy and aromatic. It had noodles with the right amount of bounciness and fresh vegetables. The silken tofu was solid and among the better once's we've had. The staff was incredibly friendly and patient while we reviewed the menu. They checked on us appropriately to make sure we were satisfied. The restaurant was bright and it seems like they are always busy. A cold, rainy day calls for hot soup and soondubu sounded like a great option. Came here on a Friday early evening for a quick casual dinner. The staff were super friendly and honestly a big part of my rating here. They were helpful with the menu, super polite and gracious, and just seemed like genuine people. Foodwise, we ordered the grilled mackerel combo with a vegetable soodubu jiggae, boiled dumplings, and a beef japchae. The banchan was fine, nothing stand out but had your standard kimchi, cucumber kimchi, odaeng, and bean sprouts. The japchae was good and had a nice portion, I did get a pretty hefty bone in one bite of my japchae so just a warning. The dumplings were flavorful but also nothing stand out. The grilled mackerel was good with a nice char and very meaty fish in general. The soondubu was probably my biggest let down, it didn't have much flavor nor spice (we got a medium). I'm used to soondubu being a bit of a spicy umami bomb and this one just didn't hit the spot for me. Overall, I think its pretty average Korean food but no dish was really that great that I'd make an effort to come here. However, its probably one of the only soondubu spots in the inner loop so location is convenient. Aside from being a play on words for one of Korean cuisine's most well known dishes (#1), Dubu Dubu also has the distinction of being one of the only (#2) Korean options inside the loop. After several years in Austin with a different Korean restaurant, the owner decided to make Houston their new home and open in Greenway after realizing the growing demand for Korean fare, and I'm all for it. It's been nearly a year since they've opened in the old Mama's space (#3), with some notable changes on the interior: brighter lights, open spacing, and KBS programs on the TV. The staff is a mix of Korean-speaking and non-Korean speaking young folks, most of whom are friendly and welcoming. The food is a typical offering of stews (soondubu), pajuns (pancakes), with a limited amount of mandoo, bibimbap options, and a small sample size of banchan dishes. The haemul pajun was not as seafood'y as I would have preferred, but I enjoyed the tteokboki, kimchi fried rice, and bulgolgi. The soondubu and steamed mandoo were average, but I think having this during colder weather might end up tasting better. I do think that Dubu Dubu has lots of potential and their timing for helping out the (limited) Houston Korean food scene couldn't be better. I went here Sunday night ordering the same thing I did many months ago the first time being the Kimchi Fried Rice with less oil. It was a very unique, delicious, rich, juicy and flavorful rice entree with a kimchi, oniony, tomatoey, meaty style to it. It has a hard punch to it, not spicy or too salty, just different in a positive way that no other fried rice has. It has somewhat of a woody, mildly salted n sour profile. Very interesting. Kimchi fried rice can be super greasy in other restaurants, except here and Bori who have that authentic balance to their prep. I prefer my eggs sunny side up, but this over easy one was made with and seasoned nicely. It may have been cured, but not sure. YES! Finally, a Korean restaurant close to home! I was so excited when I heard about this place. I had long dreamed of a Korean place that was not leagues away and immediately hoped that that quality would love up to my expectations. It did! From ordering online on the easy to navigate website, to picking up the well-packed order in the restaurant, everything was easy and pleasant. The menu was extensive and well-described both for those new and accustomed to Korean cuisine. I ordered the kimchi fried rice, the scallion pancakes, the chicken soy sauce bulgogi, the noodles and the tteokbokki. The interior was lively and neat and was packed with customers who looked very happy and we were immediately helped by the employee at the counter. Yum! We enjoyed everything we ordered here. The soondubu jjigae was spot on and beef bulgogi was well seasoned and not dry/tough. Win! Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from this place (having lived 5 years in LA Korean town before), but a friend highly recommended it so I decided to try. And so glad we came to try! The banchan was good as well. I appreciate that the japchae was full of veggies such as broccoli, carrots, and even egg, not just all noodles. Thoroughly enjoyed trying out Dubu Dubu. We have been looking for a good Korean place inside the loop. While we love K-town eateries, we don't always have the time to drive out there to scratch an itch. In comes Dubu Dubu. We tried the Rabokki (tteokboki + ramen), the haemul paejjon, and the mandu. All would be repeats. The tteokboki sauce brought back memories of what we'd get in the street foot stalls in Seoul's markets. Sweet, savory, with a spicy linger (but not too much) at the end. Came out lava-hot too. The seafood pancake was great, and their niche was adding lots of scallions...a great mashup between the two, done on the thinner side, but delish. The dumplings were done well, nicely steamed, good flavor. We will be back to try the soondubu with noodles, and a few other dishes. Only had one stomach to give to the cause in this first trip. I was really excited to see that a new Korean place was opening inside the loop, but unfortunately, it fell a bit short of my expectations. To talk about the positives first: the ambiance of this restaurant is very nice. It is a small establishment with a cozy vibe. Not too quiet, not too loud. A K-Drama was playing on the TV screen. My friend and I came in on a Saturday night around 7pm and did not have to wait at all to be seated (but the place was still lively and moderately crowded). The staff was friendly and service was quick. Now, to talk about the drawbacks. I was not very impressed by the food. It wasn't terrible, but it was not great either. We ordered the Soondubu Jjigae (Beef, Medium Spice) and the Hot Stone Bibimbap (Chicken). The soup was okay. The beef was tough to chew through and had way too much of the fatty parts still attached. And despite asking for "medium spice," it was not spicy at all. The bibimbap was a little better, but still lacking in flavor. Also not spicy at all. The chicken was dry, as well. We were craving Korean food and decided to try this place. I originally saw this place opening a few months back on IG and seems like a family owned business. In a convenient area with adequate parking. We opted for the beef bulgogi combo with seafood soondubu jjige and the kimchi seafood pancake. This homey Richmond spot is one of the few places you can grab some classic Korean eats without leaving the loop. My parents and I visited on a Wednesday night and it was pleasantly crowded without having to wait for parking or a table - between the three of us, we split two soondubu combos and a seafood scallion pancake, which came out fairly quickly despite bare-bones staffing. The pancake was crisp on the outside and springy on the inside, accompanied with a zingy and savory dipping sauce. The grilled meat was pretty standard, but their tofu soup was incredible! Every component from the broth to the tofu to the toppings harmonized to create perfect spoonfuls of soup again and again. I also liked that they served the steamed rice in the traditional style, with the majority of the cooked rice scooped out of the bowl first and a light barley tea poured in to create 숭늉, a subtle rice porridge made from the stuck-on rice and scorched bits at the bottom. Finally, their banchan are excellent, too - don't hesitate to ask for a free refill if you're so inclined! After dining here, I was really struck by the brilliance of opening this kind of Korean restaurant in this specific location - it's made driving out to Spring Branch or Bellaire a tougher sell, and it offers itself as a refreshing alternative to the glut of KBBQ spots that have made their way into Houston's city center. We ordered the Scallion Seafood Pancake and Soondubu Jjigae. The seafood pancake is a pretty large portion and is perfect for sharing at the table. I got the soondubu jjigae with beef. The soup is made so perfectly, and I love that you can choose the spice level that you want. The banchan (side dishes) that they bring to the table are really good too. A very interesting day for me visiting my family around the Greenway Plaza area. Since they have not fully settled in yet, I was looking around for restaurants close by. Out of a few choices, was a new business stood out, Dubu Dubu. I told myself why not try it? Driving was not too far and it is located right next to a shopping business center adjacent to the Chipotle. A very nice corner spot with its own parking lot too. Initial walk, the restaurant is nice and bright with a good amount of available seating. I was greeted and placed my to go order. Dubu is the Korean word for "Tofu" and it was something that sparked my interest. I briefly looked over the menu and chosen a few selections I would consider standards in a Korean cuisine menu. Dumplings (mandu), Ghalbi (Korean short ribs), and Tteokbokki (Spicy rice cake). I had it once I came back to my family's place. The boiled dumplings are a nice amount of 12 pieces. The filling is just right, not too little or too much. The ghalbi short ribs are seasoned well and cut into bite sized pieces. A really nice grilled flavor and sesame oil for that nutty profile. The tteokbokki i happened to get was rapokki which includes ramyeon noodles. Good amount of rice cake, fish cake, noodles and can't forget about the boiled egg too. The spice was tolerable and had that nice red orange color from the sauce. This also comes with banchan (side dishes) Overall I enjoyed the visit to Dubu Dubu. It is nice to know where I can find Korean food in Greenway Plaza. I believe I met the owner of the restaurant and he was very nice, took my order and given me my order. Besides the good remarks, just some small things to note: The selection on the menu: The options are solid choices of any restaurant. I did wonder about the add on for cheese with the rapokki but was informed by the server there was no cheese available. The banchan packed in small containers: kimchi, bean sprouts and cucumber kimchi. Just a very solid visit and hope to what other offerings. I think it's great to have a korean restaurant inside the loop. This location has had its share of restaurant turn over so I hope this one sticks. Service was speedy and they are accommodating. I had first come across Dubu Dubu on TikTok and I immediately thought I had to try. When you first walk in, you're greeted warmly by the staff in Korean. The restaurant is small and quaint, and you pick your own seating. The menu has just enough items to not make you feel overwhelmed and it has a little bit of everything. We got two soups and 2 meat entrees and ate family style which was the perfect amount of food for 3 people. The banchan was quite tasty - kimchi, fermented cucumbers, fish cakes, and bean sprouts. While I didn't try the kimchi jjige, my boyfriend said it compared to what his mom makes at home which is a compliment and was not too salty, and the kimchi was perfectly fermented. This was my first time having soondubu jjige since I was in college (approx 15 years ago) and it gave me such a sense of home and nostalgia. It was very flavorful, the tofu was so soft, and there was plenty of seafood. The beef bulgogi was a touch on the dry side but was cut very finely and still delicious. The galbi was easily my favorite dish - it was seasoned so well and the meat was so incredibly tender and juicy due to the amount of fat on it. Not to mention the portions were very generous. The staff is attentive, swiftly removing dirty plates, refilling your water, etc. When I asked for extra spoons for the soups so we could share, I was given 2 large ladling soup spoons which I thought was a nice touch. There's a NEW Korean restaurant in Houston called Dubu Dubu Korean Kitchen. The name means "tofu tofu". It's located in Upper Kirby across Costco on Richmond Ave. (formerly MaMa's Kitchen). They've only been open for a week with no advertising, fanfare or grand opening specials. We only heard of it by word of mouth through my nephew, Teddy Lee. We tried the seafood pancake, LA Galbi on sizzling platter, Soondubu (tofu noodle soup) and spicy chicken bulgogi. It reminds me of home cooking because there are no grills on the table. I like that it's not AYCE, because sometimes I just want to have a few Korean dishes. We are so blessed in Houston with such diversity and variety of international cuisine. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was welcoming, warm and the aroma of the food opened my appetite (I wasn't really that hungry before walking in). My fiancé and I ordered the scallion seafood pancake, the Soondubu Jjige, and the Bibimbap. All of it was sooo good and well portioned. The scallion pancake is pretty big, almost the size of a medium pizza, so unless you come with a large group, you will have left overs. They serve small Korean sides kimchi, sprouts, fish cake and another dish I was not familiar with. Again, all of it was good.
