Umiya has been a hit-or-miss experience for us. The first couple of times we went, everything was great, which is why we kept coming back. Unfortunately, each visit after that got more and more disappointing. On our last visit, the seaweed salad was still partially frozen. The eel sushi came with what looked like the leftover scraps of the eel and didn't even have the usual sauce. The sashimi was cut very poorly and felt like they had just thrown thick slabs of fish onto the plate without much care. The sushi rolls weren't rolled tightly, so they kept falling apart when we tried to eat them. To top it off, some of the fried items didn't seem fully cooked. After that experience, we haven't gone back. It's disappointing because we really enjoyed our first two visits and had high hopes, but the quality became too inconsistent. I'd rate it around 3.5/5--not terrible, but the inconsistency keeps us from returning. read more

All you can eat ordering from the menu so made fresh for you. I came for lunch and was the 2nd person at the restaurant. Service was good but noticed that food from other tables was coming out before me. Another thing that threw everything off was the fruit flies or nags that kept flying around the food - killed 3 of them but more kept coming. Umiya is easily one of the best AYCE sushi restaurants in Houston in terms of quality and service! They have excellent quality sashimi/nigiri and sushi roll options. Unlike many other AYCE sushi restaurants, their sashimi are fresh and relatively thick-cut and their fish-to-rice ratio is well-balanced. I especially loved their seared salmon and seared scallop nigiri. They also have a diverse selection of rolls, although note that some of their 5-piece rolls (e.g. Red Snapper Roll and Paradise Roll) are large and very filling. The sashimi was served over ice and beautifully plated on a sushi boat. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, making sure to check in on us frequently, even though we were seated in a corner out of view and relatively isolated from the rest of the restaurant. The restaurant itself is quite spacious and could easily accommodate larger parties. The decor is Japanese-inspired and space-themed with neon lights and there is a large Bumblebee statue for Transformers fans. Parking was not an issue when we went (6pm on a weekday) as there are spots reserved for guests and there were few other customers when we visited. While we were dining here many small flies constantly flew around our table and our food. We repeatedly swatted them away throughout the meal. One other minor complaint was that the booth we were seated at felt oddly close to the table, and the upper cushion protruded into both my upper back, which made leaning back into the seat uncomfortable. Overall, I would recommend Umiya and definitely plan to come back in the hopes that the fly problem is resolved. Every day, a new AYCE sushi spot opens up. Went to umiya on a Thursday night with some friends. It wasn't too crowded but parking was tight. The decor is absolutely beautiful, like I want that shooting star ceiling for my own room. Service was great and we ordered a whole bunch. We ordered so much that we struggled towards the end. We each got one of the seared sushi. I love seared sushi, I wish more places offered it, so this was great. It was rich and seared just enough to be smoky and buttery. The plating was exquisite as well. They also had lots of options for appetizers and bowls. The sashimi was also nice and thick, pretty fresh for an AYCE place. Will definitely be back! This is the first AYCE sushi place that I've been to that wasn't a buffet. Unlike a buffet where everything is laid out before you to serve yourself, you order everything off the menu from a waiter for a set price. If you order everything correctly and avoid pitfalls that unnecessarily fill your stomach, the set price is always a better deal than ordering items a la carte at a similar quality spot. I found the sushi and sashimi to be fresher than going to a traditional buffet. The sashimi could be colder and the sashimi appetizers are only two slices per order so keep that in mind. Their version of the yuzu jalapeno yellowtail is probably the best of the lot. Out of their nigiris, their seared options are probably the best especially with their mackerel and escolar. The searing makes those pieces less oily. I wish the menu had descriptions for some of the items. I didn't understand why the tuna carpaccio was basically tuna wrapped around shredded kani. The ambiance is dark and Houston centric. TV angles are awkward from most tables which is weird considering this location used to a be a BW3. read more

Good location, but quality and presentation lackluster compared to the I-10 location. Appetizers wise there is a huge difference. Everything appears messier and just overall does not taste "as" good, although standalone they are decent. I definitely notice a few of my favorites such as baked mussels, jalapeno bombs, and fried oysters do not taste the same. Fish wise, there was a hint of fishiness in the sashimi. I also ordered 20 pieces of eel each round and there was definitely not 20 delivered. The presentation was lackluster but overall the sashimi was good. The seared nigiris were also delicious but the rice was falling apart every time we pick them up with chopsticks. Again, messy. Their new location is located in Houston's Midtown. My overall experience was good and the food was pretty yummy except the fried sushi, cucumber salad, and sago. The sago tasted like water. Sushi options were good but I think the sashimi was cut a bit too thick. Usually I wouldn't mind, but it's not high quality fish. I wouldn't say this is the best AYCE. We were pretty excited when we saw Umiya getting built out. We have dined here about a dozen times since it had opened, including large family dinners. Started off great, but the last 3-4 times, it's just gone downhill. The hot foods from the kitchen seemed like they've all been precooked and under a heating lamp for ages. The sashimi and sushi started taking forever to come out. Sushi and maki rolls legit have significantly more rice than fish. I also double-dog dare you to find more than 6 options that aren't smothered in eel sauce. The kicker is the wait staff. About half are good. The other half you can just tell do not want to be there...like it literally pains them. Again, not all but several. On a number of occasions, our food was sent to the wrong table because they didn't check or ask as they presented it. Couple that with the long wait times for the raw bar to begin with, it took another 20-30m for our food to come back out, on top of the same initial wait time. When they first opened it would have been 4 stars for food and service. Hope they turn it back around. read more

But they've transformed it you wouldn't even know - very blue lights ambiance, nice big booths, spacious and there's a huge Optimus prime figure. Parking is a bit tough during prime time, there's a Japanese bbq restaurant, boba shop, pizza spot, and a bar (?) in the same shopping center. I think it's been open about a month~ now I always start with some of the cold crudo dishes. some other items I like for variation during my meal: takoyaki, baked mussels, shrimp tempura, edamame, miso soup. I don't typically get sushi rolls at AYCE. If you know if you know, rice makes you fuller as the old Asian adage hahaha. The umiya roll is pretty good. The presentation of the sushi if you order multi rolls is really pretty. Most of my time here I order rounds of the steak hibachi, seared sushis, and sashimi. I think for dinner it's $34, cheaper for lunch $22? Services has been good, fairly quick and friendly. You can tell some are still newer but that's just expected. Everyone at my workplace (right in the med center area) were talking about how we wished there was an AYCE sushi place by us and now stars have aligned. For being located in the midtown area, I was surprised by how big the restaurant is. It's located by Gyu-Kaku so parking is kind of tight but it didn't take me long to find parking. Definitely bring all personal belongings with you though - kind of sketchy area. The staff are all very nice, attentive, and provide great customer service! Kudos to whoever hired them. Foods varied in my opinion. Some of the sashimi tasted very fresh and had good portion cuts, others were small. The cooked foods were very small portions but I guess the benefit is that you can try other things. Nothing really stood out for me as amazing or awful. First time at the Umiya chain at the new Midtown location! The ambiance of the place is very clean, modern, and stylish blending contemporary and traditional Japan. Think astronaut/space theme lighting along with Japanese floral. To the food now! Sashimi cuts were thick and quite generous. Fish was fatty and succulent. Absolutely met my standards and expectations. What blew me away was the effort put into presentation! It felt more like a luxurious dining experience although it's AYCE. The most memorable thing our group experienced was the seared sushi. OF COURSE we tried one of each. With the searing, the smokiness elevated the fatty flavors of the fish yet preserved the texture of raw sushi. Where was this all my life? This is literally the most tasty paradox I've eaten to date. Service was excellent - our waitress was very attentive, polite, and available for our orders as well as help with deciding between the dozens of options. WHAT A GREAT PLACE!!! I found this newly opened sushi buffet! What An amazing find! They have such a great Variety of rolls, sides and appetizers as part of the buffet. Came here for the lunch menu and believe me I think it's a steal because all the food that I got for that price is crazy. The staff is so responsive, kind and attentive. The food very single item I had was delicious and brought up immediately. The bar area is also big and they have many options. Decoration is beautiful and modern creative and looks really clean. The food was fresh and delicious! I have to come back for the dinner menu I was told by the staff that they have even more options. I got the miso soup, seaweed salad and can't tell you how many rolls. The restrooms are spacious and clean I always appreciate that. They also have sushi by the piece and hand rolls. The decor is really cool and I really like the space theme vibes at the table that I sat at. The place was really clean and pretty busy for a weekend. The waiter came quickly though and we got all of our food pretty quickly as well. This has got to be the best all you can eat sushi deals that I've been to. They let you order unlimited sashimi. They cap it at 20 pieces per round, but you can order as many rounds as you want. The sashimi came out really fresh and beautifully plated. The sushi rolls were good as well. They did have your usual rolls but particularly I liked the Umiya sushi roll. The baked sushi was incredible. They had a baked scallop sushi that was absolutely divine. Super solid AYCE sushi place in Midtown. Both the lunch and dinner are reasonably priced for the quality and menu size. Portion sizes are small on everything except the ramen and hand rolls. You need to be specific on the quantity when ordering as each portion of the sushi is just one. Other items like appetizers or fried food it's two. They're pretty fast with serving the food and the servers are attentive. All the raw fish is fresh and because it's new, the place is super clean. Solid 3.5 stars. The staff is incredibly friendly here and the space itself is really fun - big open space with bright neon wall art, multiple TVs and a gorgeous bar area. The food itself was very very good. The seared sushi selection is a nice touch and I particularly enjoyed the seared salmon and seared tuna. The seared yellowtail and seared Kobe beef were fine, nothing special. The sashimi was delicious and fresh. The pepper tuna was delicious and much better than most AYCE spots offering the same item. Eel sashimi was also a standout. Reason for docked stars is cleanliness. I was initially sat at one table that was still quite dirty so they moved me. Then, at my new table, I noticed it was sticky and soy sauce underneath the bottles on the table. Throughout my meal, there were tons of fruit flies. I kept having to swat them away while eating which kind of killed my appetite. My first impression wasn't great. There were homeless people sleeping all around the building begging for food. One person was relentless and she was scaring my kids. There was trash all around the building and parking lot. The entrance/foyer where the claw machine is smelled like armpits/BO. The restaurant itself was beautiful. I'm glad to have this location in Midtown and overall had a decent experience. My hope is that, unlike some of their other locations that start strong and then decline, this one continues to improve over time. We visited on a Sunday morning before heading to the Houston Grand Opera. When we arrived, the bartender and a server were smoking right out front in the parking lot. I would have considered ordering a drink, but it was off-putting to see them return to work without washing their hands. Our server, John, was very friendly and attentive. It does feel like they're still in a soft opening phase, though, and could benefit from additional staff training to elevate the overall service and experience. Even with only a few tables occupied, service was slower than expected. The slow service was not a reflection of our server John it seemed slow for them prep team...We had allowed over two hours before our performance but still had to rush to close out our check to make curtain call. There's definitely an opportunity to improve efficiency. As for the food, we ordered the spicy ramen, which was decent but not particularly spicy. The vegetable udon was quite good, with fresh, crunchy carrots and broccoli. We also tried the Spider Roll, Mango Roll, and Steak TNT Roll--all of which had great flavor and nice presentation. I had hoped to order the seared scallop and crab stick as well, but due to the slow service, we ran out of time. The atmosphere is appealing, with a fun Houston "Space City" theme. However, the music was a bit too loud at times, with inconsistent hip-hop selections that didn't quite match the vibe. I'll give it another try. 10/10 would recommend!! what a cute little spot!! it's very galaxy themed. the interior is super cute for a date night. the hostess greeted and seated me immediately upon arrival. she let me know they had opened a few months ago. my server quinn was excellent. she made sure i was taken care of and my table was never empty. she had great recommendations and explained the menu to me as it was my first time. the food runners handled the food with care and made sure each order hit the right tables. the playlist was setting the mood. the sushi is immaculate!! literally sooooo fresh!! like was the ocean behind the restaurant cause yuummmmyyyy!!! if i had more of an appetite i would've ate until i needed to be rolled out. the bathrooms were clean and fully stocked! The seared sushi is even better than the other location and is on the top of my list. New dishes we tried that was fried fish and shrimp. The baked mussels here was also even better.
