But it was cooked to perfection. The Mac and cheese was phenomenal as well along with gravy and mashed potatoes. Over all, would have to rate this place a 8 out of 10. The restaurant is situated off the beaten path in the business district, but it's impossible to miss with the huge smoker sitting out front. It's a small restaurant with just a few tables and the ordering situation is a bit wonky (just one small window to order and pickup from). The staff was ultra-friendly and the food came out quick. As for the food, it was just okay... The BBQ itself wasn't bad, but it was definitely precut and kept in warmers (this would give a pit master down in TX a myocardial infarction as this is a huge "no no"); the sides were actually really good though. The total was about $30 for lunch, which to me was a bit high based on the quality of the BBQ. Overall... Not bad, not great, but not certainly TX BBQ.

BLTA used the same disappointing bread, flaccid under cooked bacon a tiny amount of pesto aioli and more avocado then there was on the avocado toast. Kids mini pancakes were good but chocolate chips are $1 up charge. I will say yesterday's eggs Benedict was good- hollandaise is excellent. Breakfast potatoes were a bit undercooked. Bloody Mary was a bit weak in my opinion. After all of that- I got a look at the receipt and there is a 2% BOH RevShare added to the bill. My best guess is this is fee to help pay the kitchen- To be honest we went here because it was a short walk from the Hilton. After the poor service, bad quality and hidden fees- we would be better off eating on the resort.

We have been coming to GEN for quite some time. At least once a month on average we even drive all the way from Westlake Village rather than drive into the city for KBBQ. In the last few months GEN has taken a real dive, so much so we will not be going back. We always had to ask for more oil and they always were reluctant to bring it out but apart from that it was great. The last time we went (2 weeks ago) we had to ask several times for oil and by the time our food was cooked it had still not materialized. We eventually got some and immediately asked for more as they only brought one dish out for a table of 4. Eventually we asked to speak to the manager who came over and asked us why we wanted more oil and implied that we were in the wrong to even dare ask for oil. It's like going to a sushi restaurant and having to battle to get soy sauce and wasabi. We then let them know that the server was trying really hard but it seemed like they were not getting any help in the kitchen and clearing tables which is why we were not getting good service to which she shrugged her shoulders. We also kept asking for 2 or 3 orders of a dish and only one ever came out. We were trying to get more food at once as it was such slow service from the kitchen. It seems like the manager is the problem and needs to have more training or change their career. Last night a friend went and had a similar experience and the manager was equally as terrible. He also commented on the lack of oil and slow service. The manager was not understanding and told him several other people were complaining!!! NOT GOING BACK anytime soon. read more

I came here with my husband earlier this month to celebrate our anniversary. We would come here from out of town all the time, and I would bring my family as well and always enjoyed it. So I was very disappointed to see the quality of this place completely run down. Seemingly they are now under new management and decided to cut down on the quality of their food. The service has also gone down. Our server didn't bring us our drinks until 30 minutes into our meal. Half our order never came even when we left. Servers and bussers were fighting in front of customers. We left hungry after being there for an hour and that has never happened before. I was trying to find a manager, but there wasn't one to be found and it was hard to even catch my server after we paid. I tried calling multiple times for days and no answer. Once I got ahold of them, I explained about the service we received and the experience we had at the restaurant and asked for a refund on our meal, because we did not get our moneys worth. The manager then goes to tell me that it'll be too much work to look through the system to find my transaction. I then asked him if he just doesn't want to do it. And he goes on again to tell me that it'll take time for him to do all of that and it's just too much work. I then repeat myself and say if he's going to do it or not, and he shouts out an "oh my god" and hangs up the phone. I call back and a girl answers the phone, I ask her what their managers name in and she quickly said she's not allowed to give that out... your not allowed to give your managers name out? It's been about two years since I've eaten here because I'm away for school right now. Every time I've visited, I've always had a great experience but yesterday was a different story. We came in around 3:30 and was seated right away. Our server wasn't the greatest. When we first got there, I asked a question and she just blankly stared at me and gave me a condescending answer...like, umm okay. She then proceeded to take our order but when the food came out she forgot some of our items and we only ordered four things to begin with. Throughout the entire meal, she'd come by to ask us if we needed something and we'd let her know but she never came back with the requested items. And when she came to refill our drinks, our drinks were never full! Looked the same as it did before she even gave us a "refill." Got so bad that we had to ask the managers in the front to take our orders and to refill our cups. Our server came by many times and noticed that our grill was black but never bothered to switch it out. I wanted to see how long it'd be until she would switch it out for us but she never did until I asked her to. I was polite to her the whole time and thanked her and everything but she made the whole experience so awful! I don't think she enjoys working there and had such a negative attitude the whole entire time. And every time we'd ask her a question, the same blank stare and same snarky answers. I'm disappointed with how bad service has gotten since I last visited. But two stars because the manager was nice and cleared our tables for us, correctly took our orders and refilled our drinks. read more

Disappointed in the changes they have made there. Service has gotten worse!!! The hostesses were playing around on their cellphones and completely ignored our party. We eat here maybe once every other week and we loved it, but for some reason Gen has gone from 4 stars to 1 for my boyfriend and I. One of the nights we went, our server completely stopped serving us and we saw him walking around talking and ignoring other tables as well. The busser eventually helped us out and the sad thing is, the tip that was meant for the busser went to the server who didn't help us out at all! We would always ask for our favorite server, Yoshi to help us out, but he no longer works there which is a big disappointment. Out of all the times we've been there, he's the only server who would offer things like garlic, jalapenos, radish wrap( our favorite), bean paste, and sesame oil. He was also very helpful when it came to telling us how to properly cook everything while other servers we've had just leave the food on the table without telling us what they even are. I loved coming here, but I'm going to have to give this place 1 star. The hostesses are very lazy, as well as the servers we've been getting lately, last time I went I got no rice because it supposedly takes more than 2 hours to make, the seats haven't been wiped, grill looked nasty when we got seated, and they are very stingy with their side dishes. First of all, I rarely write reviews, especially negative ones, but it is deserved. Would give negative stars if I could. Should have known better after the wait. We were quoted 1 hour wait although there were many empty tables inside. Thought we would give them a chance as it was early still. Went in to check at 1 hr mark and host said no its actually only been 58 minutes....rude! We proceeded to wait another half hour so we went in again and we were seated within 5 minutes then. We got seated at a high top and when we asked for a booth in the front we were ignored until the girl was like "no do you not see their is no tables " mind you we got no menu, it Took forever to get a menu...sorry I don't want to scan the qr code and read the menu on my phone especially when it doesn't match the real menu. Long story short... Management and wait staff were clueless...walked by and would not make eye contact, we had to ask multiple times to multiple people for the simplest things- plates WE GOT SEATED WITH NO PLATES NOTHING water, napkins etc. Meat servings were small and low quality. Side dishes were not authentic and never refilled. Worst of all they would walk right by and not take the dirty dishes with raw meat juice. Gen has always been a go to KBBQ for me and my friends. It's almost like a monthly routine. Usually, this place is packed! Rightfully so, the food and side dishes are clean, tastes wonderful with modern environments. The chaotic environment of a KBBQ restaurant always end up in hit or miss service at Gen, though. Lucky for me, today I met a server named Ricardo. He was on point and understood my personal tastes almost immediately. He also recommended a special order combo that was the single most amazing thing I've had at this restaurant. He calls it the Ricardo special soup. Definitely seek him out and ask about it! Very delicious! Pros: - clean food - service - environment - great side dishes Cons: - price is fair, however it is not a place for a quick meal - wait time, expect to be waiting at the lobby for a while during weekends. I find it crazy how we have to come on here to see if management will get their stuff together and staff as well, we just came in on Thursday and we had the worst service ever first I had to wait for a table when their was so many tables open what exactly were we waiting on? Honestly this place gets worst and worst every time we go, I've never had a problem with the hostess but this time it's a whole problem we came on Valentine's Day , and yes I understand it was busy but we go in an hour before closing around 9:15 keep in mind they closed at 10:30 we drove over an hour to eat here so then the host can tell us their not taking anymore people down we asked if we can at least have our name in the waitlist if we don't make it we understand but they refused us service and told us no it's was over an hour before closing ? Another girl comes up and starts telling us we've had a long night we're busy we're not talking anymore people if their going to be saying that then answer the phone when we call to ask I overhear the 3rd girl saying "why do these couples keep coming in" which such attitude I would of talked to a manager in the spot but they were no where to be found drive over an hour for nothing. I usually enjoy dining at Gen Korean BBQ, but this visit was a major letdown due entirely to the unacceptable attitude of our server, who referred to himself as "Socrates." From the moment he approached our table, his demeanor was cold, dismissive, and frankly, rude. Simple requests were met with sarcasm, eye-rolling, and a tone that made us feel more like a burden than paying guests. It wasn't about speed or quality of food--both of which were fine. The issue was entirely the way we were treated. Dining out should be a welcoming experience, especially in a place known for its interactive and social atmosphere. Instead, this server's behavior put a damper on the whole meal. Customer service is just as important as the food, and unfortunately, this experience reminded us how quickly a bad attitude can ruin a good night out. Hopefully management addresses this, because I won't be returning if this is the kind of hospitality Gen now stands behind. read more

My friend and I are visiting some old friends from college and they treated us to Gen KBBQ. It was our first time having any type of experience like this where you cook your own food. We went on Sunday night and were seated fairly quickly. The ambience of the restaurant is great and all the staff were so friendly. You could see how busy it gets and how everyone is running around. Our server was so nice and truly made the experience even better. She was a girl wearing a hello kitty mask, her name was Kayla (?) She recommended her favorites the spicy pork belly, beef belly, and the brisket and they were so good! She was on top of everything and also told me to try the Peach Lychee soju caprisun and it was great. Overall such a wonderful experience thanks to her. I give this place a 5 star due to the great service that was provided. We will be coming back again before we leave and request her! Hopefully this time we can get the window seat. read more

I have been to Gen plenty of times, even with the new management. The new change of menus is ok, i haven't had an issue in going recently. However, my most recent visit left me uncomfortable and wanting to never go again. If anything, I would really like to contact anyone higher up and express how bad the things I witnessed were and how they ruined the restaurants reputation. A short mexican lady was being rude to the girls in front.I was bothered by her rudeness and lack of consciousness. I genuinely felt so bad for what these girls have to put up with because it did not look like it was the first time. walked around doing absolutely nothing and only focused on bothering the girls up front. I refuse to affiliate with a restaurant that treats their employees like garbage. Place is ok and this experience just convinced me to never go back. I do regret not asking for corporates phone number, I hope these girls are ok. read more

My husband took me out the other night to this amazing restaurant. The decor is very beautiful. The wait was pretty long but well worth it. The food was amazing! It was different, because we had to cook it ourselves but it was definitely a nice experience. Brisket and the spicy pork were my faves. The only thing I probably disliked was the creepy manager coming to our table and interrupting our date. Our server was very attentive and helpful. We tried to give him the tip but he explained to us that the tip is all split and shared? He told us he would get $100+ during his shift, but he has to bring it to the front and only receives 5-10 dollars out of the 100. They also don't get discounts or free meals which is very appalling. Is that even legal?? Even with those horrible circumstances our server was very great and I hope he finds a better job elsewhere. Definitely will be going again. read more

If you're planning on coming here for a special event birthday or date don't. We came in so excited after reuniting with my friends that I have not seen in years little did we know we would get the worst experience possible the lady at the front gave us the most disgusting attitude I saw no name tag but just as I could describe she was a white haired young lady. Since we came in just the ugliest attitude and it got worst when she took us to our table because we asked for a full couch table and she just walked away then took us did not say a peep once she sat us just put our one menu down just one menu. if you don't like you're job no need to take it out on others our server on the other hand was amazing gave us everything we needed it was not that busy we waited around for like 10 minutes for a table even though their was tables open. read more

This was our first time for me and my friends. AYCE Korean BBQ? Who wouldn't love that?! We were seated right away by the very nice and welcoming hostess at the front. She explained everything nicely. Our server did a great job at attending to us when we needed help. Even helped us cook the meat cuz were guys and sometimes we suck at cooking. Price is great for lunch 14.99 and dinner 19.99 per person. There's also the lunch special for the "not so hungry" any 2 items for 9.95 I believe. Anyway, we also thought the giant holographic screen playing sports was awesome! Nice place. Excellent experience over all! We will be coming back! My family and I always go out of our way to this location from Santa Barbara despite having more options for Korean barbecue up north I find it well with the drive like we did just this past Saturday as we're always greeted with a smile! we've been to this location well over seven times and we always make sure to request Ricardo if he's available and never mind the wait! (You'll thank me later) there's many other options to eat around this little shopping center but I think Gen really stands out with the AYCE aspect. I won't be coming back to this place as they are not taking actions and being aware of Peoples utensils and food. We came in got seated and when we look into our plates theirs 2 strands of hair in our plates from the girl who had seated us. This is disgusting as this is a whole restaurant why is it okay to have a whole lot of hair in ur face if ur dealing with plates and our utensils. It was only one of the host who had like 2 big strands of hair out which is the one that seated us we asked this is just a no for me I knew it was not mine because it's two different hair colors.shame on the managers for letting this be okay because this shouldn't be allowed anywhere working in the food industry. corporate or higher up management will be aware because this is unacceptable. read more

I love the concept of Gen BBQ. It's a great first date night dinner since it's a different setting and you can get rid of the awkwardness because you're actually doing something. The vibe is great and it looks like the place is pretty well maintained. My favorite is the pork belly. I can eat so much of those someone has to stop me. Service has been good the last couple of times I visited..it was bad when they first opened but it has greatly improved. I almost gave this place 4 stars because I do not like how they collect payment. When you're ready to pay, someone gives you an ipad and they wait. It's a little awkward for me when I have to put the tip. But besides that a great place to eat at The Collection. Do not come here if you're not hungry!!! read more

not coming back again!!! bad service.... we have to ask multiple servers to get what we need... apparently our server is busy doing closing duties...We came 2 HOURS before the restaurant closes .No drink refills ,napkin or change of grill from our assigned server. thank you jorge for NOT doing your best to fix the problem or at least to make sure we leave the restaurant satisfied.not coming back with my family They didn't even have the chance to eat or cook their bbq because of Burnt grill that our server never changed.we told you that so many times. and you still charged us. horrible service...GEN management please do something!! management cant even reply to this message.. bad management.!!!! read more
