Gen is hit-or-miss for me. Some places are just terrible and low quality. This one is actually still good (as far as gen goes). The wait isn't horrible for the time I went (Friday 7pm), about 30 minutes. There's not much seating in the lobby area, but you can walk around the mall, no issue. Food: it was as expected, KBBQ. if you've not been to a Gen before, it's pretty solid. If you like light flavors like me, I stick to ordering the Chadol, Hang Jungsal, and Samgyubsal on repeat. Always the thicker steak cuts are good (hawaiian steak, premium steak). I'll mix it up now and then with a spicy or sweet plate (either Spicy Samgyubsal or beef bulgogi). read more

We've been here a number of times and most servers here have been good but this visit went exceptionally well with Eduardo as our server. Was very attentive and checked back at very reasonable intervals. Saw he was carrying a lot of tables but methodically went to each to check on them but didn't act rushed. Also the check took a bit but he came and apologized for the wait. This goes a LONG way when someone acknowledges you've waited. Most food came out fast. Only negative, which is really for the restaurant owner, it gets pretty smokey in there and hard to breathe. Need to do something with the venting. I don't know what happened to this spot but it's absolutely disgusting. It use to be the best and closest to the Santa Barbara area but now I don't think I can even go back. My friend and I ordered our usual meats and side dishes and when I tell you it was absolutely disgusting I don't know how I can fathom the words. Our Japchae came out in 2 minutes after we ordered and it was cold, probably left out. We ordered another later and the same thing. It was probably sitting out. The Korean fried chicken was just pieces of fried batter. The meats was not it. It had this bad meat taste and when the brisket came out it was basically slices of frozen fat with a bit of meat so when you cook it it's just a 1 inch meat with either nothing or a chunk of fat stuck to it. I don't think I can come back to this place anymore, it's gone down hill. SHITE SHOW from the beginning!! Waited 45 min for booth to be ready, then was told by front desk to "wait another 15 minutes". Waited 30 more minutes before they said "table is ready, follow us". They sat us at a shared table and when I pushed back on getting a booth they gave attitude and said we would have to wait an additional 15-30 min...so I gave up and settled for shared table. No menus were placed on the table and also no grill, so we were staring at a cesspool of previous customers slop before our server noticed and placed a grill on. Gen used to be a good spot 2-3 years ago. Now it completely sucks. The customer service is absolutely terrible. The front desk staff are always ignoring customers. Our waiter made my husband and I wait 45 minutes to give us the bill. We finished our food and we waited a long time to get our bill and it wasn't that busy. The premium menu was a disappointment. Been there before with 3 of us and it was great service, went a few nights ago with reservations for 14 of us. The table had two ends open however the wait personnel kept bringing us the drinks and meat to one side for us to pass down. we asked ahead of time to have two checks right side of the table and left that also did not happen. 700.00 later we paid 20% tip for a service that was not good. This was my first time coming to this restaurant as I've always walked by it but never went. I finally decided to go in and waited in the 45 minute wait time. While eating my food I couldn't help but overhear who I believe is the manager, a short lady with glasses and red hair, was being VERY rude to her staff (like hostess and server). This is supposed to be a family friendly restaurant but NOTHING about how that manager acts is family friendly and just ruined our meal. I don't think we'll be coming back as we prefer a family friendly staff. Our waiter was nice, but it's so sad to see those employees work under those conditions. Lately the hostess say there's no point joining the waitlist, because the wait begins when all your party is present when you check in person. This is a disservice to the yelp waitlist, if we're being told you've been waiting an hour and that wait doesn't count because you have to be present in order for the waitlist to begin. I feel the quality has dropped since there opening. The quality of the meat has declined. The wait staff have always been nice, but the hostess represents the beginning experience and if your getting attitude from the face that greets you it gives you a layout what's next. I can sum up our experience at GEN in one word: AWFUL. I can sum up the food we had at GEN: BARELY EDIBLE. I can sum up the service at GEN: FINE. But consider this: What difference does it make if the hostess and waiter are good if the food they bring to the table stinks? Before I continue, I'll reveal that we have been eating great Korean food in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley for decades, and this was an unwelcome aberration. The meat was terrible. When we began placing it on the grill, we immediately noticed the tremendous amount of fat. Yes, there is supposed to be fat on meat, but not to this extent. It was gross. The bulgogi came as a clump, the short ribs had so much fat and gristle on it, it was too chewy to enjoy. The sirloin steak was half fat, half meat. We also made the mistake of ordering calamari rings which seemed to come right out of a box from the freezer. It was still cold when they brought it to us. Now then, you may be asking yourself: "If it were really that bad, why didn't you say something to the waiter?" That's easy. I've worked in plenty of restaurants over the years to know that some waitstaff and kitchen staff don't take kindly to complaints, and what they do to the food is a crime. Our approach will be to never go back. It's funny that Gen is an "all you can eat" menu, because you don't want eat any of it, so they won't go broke bringing you as much as you can eat -- because it will be minimal. Got iced tea, took asking 4 different people & 1/2 hr later to get sugar for my tea. Sauces were served well into the meal & not at the beginning. Sad to see the decline in quality of food and management here. I've been going to the Oxnard location for at least 6 or so years and I always thought it was great. Always take my girlfriend here and just went tonight and immediately knew the quality of the food went down by looks of the first order. The KFC on their menu used to be real chicken, now it's literally freezer popcorn ground chicken heated up you could buy from winco with the same sauce on they usually put on it. The Gen salad isn't the same either, neither with the beef brisket, jap chae, gyoza (now called Mandu), and the spicy rice cake. The salt in the tray they give you in the beginning was also hard and stuck together somehow. Going onto service, our main server was great (Essence) but what I assume to be the manager (guy in the button up plaid shirt) would bring us dishes occasionally and I'd say thank you but would never give acknowledgment which I thought was weird, but honestly didn't bug me too much. We were also placed at one of those shared long tables and one of the guys cleaning was spraying the cleaner pretty dang close to our food. The finished dishes were also taking a really long time for bussers to pick up which in the passed here they've been quick. At the end of the day, I'm sad the quality of the food went down like it did. If everything else was how it was right now except if the food was still how it used to be I'd probably come back. Checked in through waitlist at 4:20pm and was asked to arrive within the window period. Arrived at the restaurant around 5pm and was told I had to wait 45 minutes. Wait.. what? We were told that a party who walked in was put ahead of us because it's "first come first serve". That makes no sense. What's the point of waitlisting through Yelp if other people can still be put ahead of us even though they came after I waitlist? Might as well not even have a waitlist at this point.. Just witnessed a walk in for a party of 4 be told it was 30 minutes. Followed by a group of 4 who waitlisted in advance also was told 30 minutes. So... again, what's the point of waitlisting? Jonah was the best server ever. He checked up on us regularly and personally delivered many dishes to us because the servers and the kitchen were backed up. Wow!!! Finally got to try this place and was not disappointed. The menu can be overwhelming... look top to bottom before ordering. We got just red meat because I didn't moxie the veggies and glass noddles (do yourself a favor and definitely order those) all meat was way too much but 100% our fault so can't dock them for that! The Hawaiian pork was SOO SO GOOD! Recommend ordering half portions as the portions are very large. The "belly" comes like bacon... I didn't know that nor did I like it but I'm not a big "meat eater" so i didn't realize the amount of fat that came on it There was just two of us, if we go back we will definitely do a group of four and try more things, the calamari and octopus looked great (people next to us) Can't wait to go back but don't make the same mistake as me and get a better variety. I have been here all the time; however, after replacing new manager the service is getting worst each visit. First of all, today is 08/22 which is my birthday. We are party of 7 people; however, we got split up into 2 seperate tables back to back. The manager was not flexible at all. 2nd: All of the drink did not have a single ice cube. Never seen it happened in any restaurant before. 3rd: The server never came to check if we are doing ok like the last management. Really bad customer service management. The last manager was much better. We just need to look around to find our server, she then ask someone to stop by our table right away. Also the server checked on us once in awhile if we need anything else. 4th: Order grill change from a lady server and waited more than 10 mins. We have to ask for a second times in order to get our grill change. 5th: The server had attitude by throwing the bow of salad on the table instead of put it down gently. 6th: When we were walking out of the door, they were asking if we paid. If they were paying attention, the cash is on the table. It was rude to ask the customer if they paid or not instead of going to the table. If they pay more attention to their customer instead of the bill, they would have notice... 7th: Not today, but every time we ask how long is the wait, the answer will be around 30 minutes. Why can't they tell the truth for the waiting time. Headup: the wait time from the check-in until you get the table is around 1.5 hour to 2 hours, so don't show up on an empty empty empty stomach. This place is so delicious!! I always leave soo stuffed and in a food coma. The price is great as it is all you can eat. The drinks are so good too. Service is a hit or miss though. Sometimes the waiter/waitress will forget some things or it takes a little bit to come out. I love the atmosphere and that they have a full bar. Sometimes the drinks come out extremely strong, which is a good thing if I'm trying to catch a buzz. Sometimes they come out not as strong but tastes good. Service: Even though our large party had advance reservations, the service was terrible. We were part of a large group of approx 25 people with advance reservations. The waiter only addressed one end of very long table. He had the only menu. He didn't come to the other end for about 30 min. We were stuck in the middle and couldn't hear or talk to him. We were also so far away from the grill that we couldn't really cook food (also dealing with toddlers--definitely not a place for toddlers.). My drink didn't come until way after I finished eating, which didn't happen fast. We got a few hand me down scraps and paid $30./head. Also, get ready to do some possible cutting and definitely lots of cooking as this is the case with Korean BBQ. You get about 90 mins to eat, and can only order a certain number of items at a time. Something to keep in mind is that they charge you for items not cooked/eaten. At your disposal will be tongs, scissors, and chopsticks. You'll have over 25 items to choose from ranging from meats, poultry, seafood, and sides (banchan and others). Pre-pandemic, banchan and sides came out automatically, but now are served upon request. If you're a vegetarian, good luck, and I'd probably advise you to not come as this is definitely not that type of place - there might be a few options including sides but that's about it. Whenever I go to Oxnard I love coming here for some Kbbq. In fact, I'd say it's my favorite Kbbq in the county. I love their beef bulgolgi, it's always so flavorful and melts in your mouth. To be honest, that's all I really get from there meat wise. Today I tried the beef belly, and spicy pork which were both very good. Japchae is always the bomb!!! Tasty but not too heavy, also has the rice cakes and dumplings. Servers were all attentive and friendly. They came over about 3 times to change our stove plate which was nice of them. Constantly were around to take away our plates. The inside is pretty big, and the whole ambiance feels modern and fancy. I've always have good experiences coming here. Wow, I just can't even put into words how bummed I am to see this place take the downfall of the decade. Good things don't last is the best explanation for my rather long review. If you liked any of the following items, I beg that you never return to this GEN until they get their sh** together and offer the same quality food as before. Just from reading reviews and seeing pictures it seems all these items have changed for the worse -the GEN salad( iceberg lettuce and carrots ) -KFC (Costco style popcorn chicken with the sauce on everything but the chicken) -Brisket( quality now contains more fat and "gristle" than meat) -rice( low quality rice in much smaller portions) -bulgolgi( now sweeter in an artificial sense... gross) - beef belly( now comes with sauce and chiles) why? -mixed veggies( they don't even slice the veggies for you anymore... I get cooking ourselves but prep is your job) Just these changes alone will make sure I will never return to any GEN KBBQ with this updated menu. If this business has any sense of urgency or concern for their revenue or longevity, I have been coming to GEN's across SoCal since 2015 and I will guarantee that you will be out of business before the end of 2024 serving this garbage. I used to drive from Santa Barbara for over 30 minutes just to enjoy food at this location. Thank you for saving me gas money, but I'd prefer that someone in management speaks up about this god awful excuse for food quality at a place that charges AYCE sushi pricing. Gen has a great selection of meats for you to try. Whether it taste good or not is up to you since you will be cooking it. They do have some things that are already cooked like Korean Fried Chicken or Gyoza. I love the Gen Signature Steaks...I add the green salt to them and then cut them up into my rice. You should be careful with what you try - just in case you don't like it - though because in some instances they will charge you for leftovers. Also they have a great selection of drinks. My favorite is the capri soju that has many different flavors. My favorite one is peach. In case you don't know what a capri soju is, think of a capri sun for adults. Whether you go with friends or alone...you are sure to leave full and satisfied. It does get busy so just be prepared for a wait. Note: Your whole party needs to be with you before you check in. I absolutely love this location. My husband and I frequent many of the California GenBBQS up and down the coast and none of them come close to comparing to this particular location. Some of the things the we love about this location are the amazing staff (especially the manager Ere who is super vibrant), the vast indoor seating with soft blue lighting, and the large and high quality portions of food they serve. Well, 7 years later I decided to come back to where it all began! Make sure to take advantage of the yelp waitlist, since the wait can be pretty long. It's a very straightforward and convenient process! There was more on the menu than I remembered. Unfortunately they were out of a couple items that we wanted, but there was still plenty to choose from! Some of my favorites were the galbi, beef bulgogi, and spicy pork belly. The brisket was pretty good too, but make sure you order a side of ssam jang because the brisket isn't seasoned! I would definitely pass on the korean fried chicken since a majority of it was just breading, but the sweet and sour sauce was tasty. This place desperately needs work. I continue to come here because my wife enjoys the food, and while I do too, it's difficult for me to fully enjoy it when there is so much else wrong. In general, it feels and looks less than clean and seems cluttered on the left perimeter of the restaurant with items for waiters and busboys to grab. There are torn white booths, dirty separating glass, and grease-ridden emergency exit signs and ducts/vents due to a lack of a proper ventilation system--and routine cleaning. This is also why you end up leaving smelling like the smoke of the food you cooked. Other KBBQ restaurants have systems that draw the smoke away from your table to prevent this. Service is hit or miss. Either we get a great waiter that provides us what we need when we need it, or we get a waiter that forgets about us. It's also a bummer that they got rid of the lunch price. $29.99 all day, everyday now. Even if the lunch price offered less meats, it'd still be worth having, as there only a select few cuts we consistently order anyway. Something for Gen to consider. Overall, I think the food is decent, but with how the rest of the restaurant is ran and upheld, it honestly feels like a gamble eating here and I am sadly waiting for the day it makes me sick. When we arrived at 8:10, the guy in the front said if we came an hour ago we could have been seated.--he said don't take that for granted and come earlier and let them know you are there. --noted for next time, good tip. Super fire, last time I came was 2.5 years ago. Didn't get time for pictures because it's so fun to cook for each other. The staff is really friendly and runs around like little target elves! They are so fast and efficient. It's like a club in here on a Saturday night, the music is bumping and one of the walls' lights are flashing(don't think it's supposed to be). Service is absolutely horrible, our server never check up on us and food tastes subpar, never coming back here again. Server asked us if we wanted a grill change but never came back with a grill. Had to cook on a charcoal grill for 10 min before he asked again. He also never brought out any sauce for us to use, we had to ask 3 different people to bring sauces for us to use. Took the 3rd person to bring us something. Music here is also extremely loud and ruins the experience. When we asked for the check, the server took 10+ minutes to bring it to us.
