KFC is bland and drizzled with lame ass sauce. Thin beef was frozen, a lot of the meat were not the best cuts, and definitely not how it's used to be, bulgogi was lack luster and the marinate tasted horrible. Banchans were all watered down. Seriously only thing positive about this place was the music, but I can do that myself with Spotify.. will not be recommending or coming back to this gen as this gen is definitely different from the ones in LA and there are better places like Parks and baekjeong. If there was a 0 star rating I would put it. I've always enjoyed Gen and had no reason to have any disliking towards other than the service and workers from time to time which is understandable. But what isn't understandable is not properly cleaning dishes for customers. I asked for more water which the server gladly brought, but what a surprised that there was a lipstick stain on the rim of the cup! Mind you, I did not wear any lip products and it was towards the end of the meal. The amount of disgust and unsafe feelings I felt was overwhelming to the point I lost my appetite. It made me think about all the other utensils I've used and ingested wondering if they were clean as well. I hope Gen enforces cleanliness more thoroughly and not rush things through. I always come with family every time I eat here so there is a good amount of us and of course we have to wait for seating in which we don't mind. Before we get seated we make sure to not get a booth (it's cramped and my grandma needs a good amount of space) because one time we got a booth it was hard for us to ask for a regular area to sit(it wasn't the workers fault, it was hard to hear and the person who took us to dinner said yes to a booth‍) food is so good, there was one time I choked on a piece of the steak but that was because our meat couldn't be cut as good, of course we asked for new scissors and that was given to us! When we called the owner over she very rudely told us there was a sign at the front desk saying all people seated will ne charged. Been to several KBBQ joints including AYCE ones. This is not a good one. In fact, it's a terrible one. If the Circus Circus hotel in Vegas had a Korean BBQ restaurant, this would be it. Great for kids and plus sized Americans who frequent Chick-fil-A and think AppleBees is classy. I am just going to state the obvious faux pas. Specialty Soju "pouch" drinks, corn cheese, fries, and finally the absence of a single Korean Beer (Hite, OB, Cass, Kloud). Not a one! I really don't think anyone that frequents this place or likes Gen, would enjoy a real Korean BBQ joint. Gen to Korean BBQ is what Benihana is to real Japanese. My biggest gripe is all of the sugar they put in their food. I probably consumed more sugar in one single (90 min. max.) sitting than I do in a whole week. The short-rbs, potato salad, green salad. EVERYTHING is over-sugared, as is their specialty Soju pouches I am sure. The average American consumes 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day, more than double the recommended amount. We went there for a birthday dinner. We were welcomed nicely and seated but for some reason the waitress who was attending for us was in a hurry. She came to get our order but we only get the part of what we ordered and she is hard to get hold to, we waited for the other food patiently but it never came and I saw her near the bar in her phone. Suddenly I saw her leaving the restaurant and they never had anyone to replace her for us. Imagine how are you gonna have to order in that set up of restaurant without anyone to get what you wanted? The grill is already black and smoky until the one from the reception came in to attend us. We felt neglected even we were being patient with them as we had been here for a lot of time. We even paid our bill by the reception as no one is there to give us our bill. Such a really bad experience for a birthday dinner. We should have not given any tip but my wife is very nice not to. Now, I would make this restaurant the least choice whenever we go to collection or I might not even go back to this restaurant at all. First time at this place.. based on our experience the last. Long story short, the food we got was pretty good... salad was good. Calamari was ok.. too thick and chewy. The Beef Bulgogi was quite good. My drink which was to have been a double (long day) took a long time and was definitely not a double. Our server who knew it was our first time there, was only marginally helpful and seemed very rushed. Nothing was really explained. We ended up asking two men across from us how things worked. We ordered. Salad and rice came quickly as did the calamari and our first order of beef. It ended there. After 75 minutes we never received the rest of what we ordered. We let our server know to no avail. We watched other tables get their food and our server checked on them. Nada for us.. I asked for napkins. Nothing. Finally after the 75 minutes we tracked down our server, (who had been informed we never got our food and basically ignored us) paid and left hungry and frustrated. She did apologize but we didn't want that. We wanted what we paid for,. So for just shy of $100, we got incredibly poor service, 33% of the food we ordered and a bad experience for what was supposed to be a rare night out. I've run restaurants and this is 100% a service issue. Get your staff together, if you are short staffed get your manager out to help and actually service your customers so they want to come back. read more

Been here enough times to get this goin. I've only been on Friday nights. And it's PACKED. And I do mean it. Wait times can vary from 15mins to an hour until you get a table. With that said moving on. I've always been greeted upon entering. After that they do temperature checks before you are allowed to be seated. What I've had. Brisket Steak Pork belly Mushroom & veggies Rice Mash potatoes Shrimp KFC ( Korean fried chicken ) Spicy rice cake I always ask for seasoning and sauce. The brisket here is on of my favorites. Season it well and cook it off with a bit of sauce. Always fresh tasting. Display is great when they bring it to you. The pork belly is my second favorite. Doesn't need much seasoning ( it's pork ) mmmmm pork:) The spicy rice cake is another great option if you like rice cakes in general. The spicy sauce is VERY mild. Their Korean fried chicken is very mild as well. I haven't tried the their "volcano chicken" yet which I think might be more along the lines of Korean fried chicken. That'll be next! The steak is a good cut of steak. They definitely do not skimp out on it at all. Season it well and let'r rip on that grill! As far as staff goes. I've never had an issue here. The second time was much better then the first so that's good. Everything we asked for came quickly. Drinks were perfect. Staff is extremely professional and polite. So would I recommend this place? most definitely! if you can find a table you'll enjoy it. The prices aren't bad at all either. And being that you still get that great cook at your table korean bbq experience during this whole situation? EVEN better! Only reason I didn't give it 5. Mmmmmm, Gen :) I always have a wonderful experience at Gen both in taste and service. Our go-tos are spicy octopus, spicy rice cake, garlic calamari, & some meat items-usually tongue and brisket. In my opening, since reopening they have been incredibly efficient and keeping up a solid KBBQ experience along with adhering to public health protocols. Our temperature is checked before entry, the menu is downloaded, and staff maintains physical distance. Yet, there is still excellent and attentive service despite the open air, lively ambiance. -Staff would not sit us because I had to urgently use the restroom and our party was "not there" even though I was in YOUR restroom. My sister had to ask me to hurry up in the middle of using the restroom because she's pregnant and she couldn't stand for long durations and they refused to sit us because I wasn't there. We'll be back" -they didn't apologize for my sister or rushing me out of the bathroom to walk to the front so they could "see me". I know that people lie and don't have full parties there to get seated but THEY SAW Me! So clearly I was there -the steak was terrible. It was so tough I couldn't swallow it, i had to spit it out. -my dish was cracked and my sauce went went everywhere (pic added) -I ended up excusing myself and sitting at the bar so I wouldn't be charged for AYCE because the only thing I wanted to eat was the steak and it was not edible -it's freezing inside because they keep the doors and windows open because of the bbq -they do -they don't have Wi-Fi and their menu is QR. The collections is a dead zone for my phone service so I couldn't see the menu -asked us if we were sure if we wanted all" the banchan. Heck yes we do, you pay for it so we should get it. I'm happy to update my review with a much better experience! Although the KFC is still terrible, the Japchae has improved. It's still not as good as the old recipe was but it's definitely better! First of all the new management brought gens downhill. When we were getting our food, these guys brought stuff that was not ours. When my friend tried to tell him that it wasnot ours, he walked away and did not understand us. Most of the workers did not understand us and only spoke spanish. Not to be racist, but this is a KOREAN resturant. There were tacos and mexican food at a korean resturant. They also took out seoul fries and that needa to come back. The meat tasted frozen and the KFC was burnt and cold. The KFC also had a frozen taste to it. Another server was also refusing to give my friend water. He said "I cant give you only water, ill have to give it to everyone else. Another thing is my rice paper was given to me all chopped up. I couldnt enjoy it. This was a terrible experience. This by far is the worst kbbq ever. Came here on 01-17-25 and since we came in everything was horrible had to wait a few minutes just to get my name taken down. The restaurant itself is so loud it makes it so hard to even talk with whoever you take. We got seated at a high top when we specifically asked for a booth and then the hostess gave us attitude and told us we still had to wait around 30 minutes for a booth when we saw other people getting sat before us. They finally sat us at a shared table even though we asked for a booth no menus were placed on the table not even a grill. I've been to this Gen Korean BBQ location many times now. I have a restaurant near home and I was really glad to see that there's a location here in Oxnard. I'm out here at The Collection pretty often when I'm in town so this is another great place for me to dine at. I was able to find parking around the corner from there but they're all metered parking and it was a dollar per hour and it only took the coins so that was a challenge to have enough coins on me. Ever since the pandemic started I think they want you to make a reservation on yelp and that's the system they use to stay organized. You can do it through the app so it'll save you some time for when you get to the restaurant and don't have to wait. Be sure to scan the menu if you're able to. The most recent visit we weren't prompted to and it caused a slight delay in ordering. Typically I know exactly what I want but I was with guests and wanted to make sure I didn't order anything too weird. This tends to be a very popular place so they can get pretty busy. They do tend to get kind of slammed so take advantage of when the team members stop by so you can either order more food and drinks and if you're looking for any grill changes. Some of my favorite items that are underrated are the pork jowl, the beef tongue (if they'll ever have this again), or any item with the Cajun sauce. Overall, it was a great experience, the staff is very attentive and helpful. I would definitely come back the next time I want some kbbq. read more

I was then told that they weren't going to be using them until 11:30 am. It was 11:28. I said I can wait. I've been to over 4 different Gen Korean BBQ locations prior to visiting this location in Oxnard,CA. ... I'll be blunt, I was not impressed. I was deeply saddened as I have made Gen my number 1 stopping ground since I first discovered it in the Bay Area. I was on a date last night and the wait time was none on a Holiday which was a plus. Upon my date and I to be seated we seen a sign that stated no Apple Pay or Discover will be accepted. Huh. Strange, we almost walked out but luckily I had other Visa cards/ cash on hand. We were sat with no menus. We looked around and the ambiance was nice and different from other locations and we noticed the menus were digital. So you have to scan the bar code image to get Gen menu. My date and I both tried to download the menu and were both not successful so once our waiter came back I asked for physical menus and she presented them to us and we started to order. I was looking for the premium menu option and yet this location only has the regular option and the other side of the menu was their sides and drinks menu. Interesting. So once we placed our first round of food, we noticed we didn't get the half round table of side garnishes. Apparently this location was being mindful of waste so you had to request the ones you wanted and with no pics to show you what those side garnishes was, you had to ask for clarification or if you've been to Gen like I have, you kind of know what to order but it was still surprising. First rounds of food comes out and the gyoza (pot stickers) were over cooked. Nothing light about their exterior skin as you can see in my pics and what the actual description stated. Kudos on delivery time from order to arrival to my table but if your going to send out over cooked pot stickers, don't bother. Plus there was no sauce sent out or offered so I had to inquire on that as well. After about 55 mins of being seated, my table was informed of last call. I looked at my date like wtf. It hasn't even been a hour let alone 90mins. By this time my date and I were under the impression Gen was closing early. Nope, they just sat 2 new parties across from our table and 5 mins later, another table was just sat. So we were presented the check and luckily we had another appointment or we would have asked to speak with a manager due to service etc. The food as a whole was OK. When it was time to pay our bill, we were notified by our waiter that our bill had already been paid, but he was unsure as neither my girlfriend or I had paid the bill. He wanted to bring the matter to his manager which absolutely made sense in this situation. What was disappointing was that following this, we waited in our seats for 20 minutes waiting to hear from the manager. During this 20 minutes the waiter checked in on us again, notifying us that the manager would be with us shortly. The manager was nowhere to be seen. We could see the manager walking around the restaurant, even directly pass our table, but she never once stopped by to explain what we should do next. We even overheard and saw the waiter confronting his manager, asking why she isn't stopping by our table, as we had been waiting for quite some time. During this my girlfriend and I were becoming increasingly more late to a movie that we had planned after dinner. We finally decide to go up to the front desk and request for the manager as we were now completely late for our movie. We were finally approached by her where she informed us there was a mix-up in the checks and that we can now pay, after 20 minutes of waiting. Due to the fact that we were stuck for such an extended period, so much so that it interfered with our plans later that day, I requested for a discount of some sort to compensate for our time. She immediately declined, stating that the night was busy, putting the blame on the waiter for messing up the checks, informing us that the waiter will be receiving a write up (which is none of our business), and that "you have already finished all of your food".
