SOLID AYCE KOREAN BBQ! After 7 years in Oxnard, Gen (pronounced "Jen" which means "New Beginning") has become our family's GO TO eats place, whenever we feel CARNIVORE-ISH!! Things have certainly improved since my initial 3* review, upgraded to 5* since that info drop. COVID-19 pandemic has certainly impacted our access to restaurants in Ventura County, however Oxnard's The Collection has demonstrated a willingness to adapt to the unfortunate situation, as seen by the many eateries that have maximized their outdoor dining experience here. Gen is no exception. The "yelp Waitlist" is actually quite helpful regarding timing and reducing amount of people gathering in front of the restaurant to wait to enter. Maximum people in a party is currently limited to 5. Fancy temperature checking machine at the entrance is used by every customer prior to sitting down, as is hand sanitizer. Masks are also required to enter or to go to the restroom. Staff is on point regarding COVID-19 precautions, so we definitely feel safe while spending time here. Everyone has always been pleasant and helpful when interacting with us. Mai, the manager, always greets us with such joy every time we visit, it gets my Pops in a happy state of mind! Francis, from Corporate, seems to pop in from time to time... that bloke is FUNNY AND drops grill knowledge every time we see him! Pops LOVES when Penny comes around to help us or just say hello. She's always an absolute joy to be around, but when it comes to taking care of Pops, she's 5* for sure! So... just so you know, here at Gen in Oxnard, you gotta COOK YOUR OWN FOOD. In Los Angeles or Orange County, AYCE KBBQ spots typically have older Korean Ladies that can recognize if you are struggling with the cooking aspect and lend a hand. NOT Oxnard! Buncha youngsters 'round here, they typically just take your order, drop off food, change your grill. Gotta make sure you got someone with grill SKILZ if you come here. We actually use this time to teach our kids how to cook meats... put 'em to work!!! I don't even know where to begin. Other than the ambiance of the restaurant everything else sucked. They have taken down the quality of EVERYTHING and it's extremely evident. You can tell from the look, the taste, just all of it. The service was mediocre ( as is every ayce place though ) my biggest problem is the quality. Just charge people more and take the quality back up, OR take some stuff off your menu so you can still charge what you do and don't feed people bottom of the barrel crap. As someone else mentioned in their review, everything is overly sweet including the salads and meat marinades. Lots of sugar in everythinggg! If there was a 0 star rating I would put it. I've always enjoyed Gen and had no reason to have any disliking towards other than the service and workers from time to time which is understandable. But what isn't understandable is not properly cleaning dishes for customers. Mind you, I did not wear any lip products and it was towards the end of the meal. The amount of disgust and unsafe feelings I felt was overwhelming to the point I lost my appetite. Oh lord where to begin :) I love this place as much as I LOVE Korean bbq. I love all their selections. I always come with family every time I eat here so there is a good amount of us and of course we have to wait for seating in which we don't mind. Before we get seated we make sure to not get a booth (it's cramped and my grandma needs a good amount of space) because one time we got a booth it was hard for us to ask for a regular area to sit(it wasn't the workers fault, it was hard to hear and the person who took us to dinner said yes to a booth‍) food is so good, there was one time I choked on a piece of the steak but that was because our meat couldn't be cut as good, of course we asked for new scissors and that was given to us! KFC is bland and drizzled with lame ass sauce. With that said moving on. I've always been greeted upon entering. After that they do temperature checks before you are allowed to be seated. What I've had. Brisket Steak Pork belly Mushroom & veggies Rice Mash potatoes Shrimp KFC ( Korean fried chicken ) Spicy rice cake I always ask for seasoning and sauce. The brisket here is on of my favorites. Season it well and cook it off with a bit of sauce. Always fresh tasting. Display is great when they bring it to you. The pork belly is my second favorite. Doesn't need much seasoning ( it's pork ) mmmmm pork:) The spicy rice cake is another great option if you like rice cakes in general. The spicy sauce is VERY mild. Their Korean fried chicken is very mild as well. I haven't tried the their "volcano chicken" yet which I think might be more along the lines of Korean fried chicken. That'll be next! The steak is a good cut of steak. They definitely do not skimp out on it at all. Season it well and let'r rip on that grill! As far as staff goes. I've never had an issue here. The second time was much better then the first so that's good. Everything we asked for came quickly. Drinks were perfect. Staff is extremely professional and polite. Barely checked on us the whole time and a lot of our items weren't brought to the table so we would tell him again and he would get an even longer face. He left maybe on break or lunch and we still were missing food that never made it to the table. Mmmmmm, Gen :) I always have a wonderful experience at Gen both in taste and service. Our go-tos are spicy octopus, spicy rice cake, garlic calamari, & some meat items-usually tongue and brisket. In my opening, since reopening they have been incredibly efficient and keeping up a solid KBBQ experience along with adhering to public health protocols. Our temperature is checked before entry, the menu is downloaded, and staff maintains physical distance. Yet, there is still excellent and attentive service despite the open air, lively ambiance. Food was sub-standard; tables, counters, and chairs were badly worn and unclean. The place was loud and obnoxious. My girlfriend joined me, but didn't eat. She only wanted to keep me company. Then came the bill... They charged me for two?!!! More than $71.00?!!! When we called the owner over she very rudely told us there was a sign at the front desk saying all people seated will ne charged. This was interesting because of the way they escorted you in, you had no way of seeing the sign. Then comes the kicker.... They won't let you take any food you don't eat home!!! Been to several KBBQ joints including AYCE ones. This is not a good one. In fact, it's a terrible one. If the Circus Circus hotel in Vegas had a Korean BBQ restaurant, this would be it. Great for kids and plus sized Americans who frequent Chick-fil-A and think AppleBees is classy. I am just going to state the obvious faux pas. Specialty Soju "pouch" drinks, corn cheese, fries, and finally the absence of a single Korean Beer (Hite, OB, Cass, Kloud). Not a one! I really don't think anyone that frequents this place or likes Gen, would enjoy a real Korean BBQ joint. Gen to Korean BBQ is what Benihana is to real Japanese. My biggest gripe is all of the sugar they put in their food. I probably consumed more sugar in one single (90 min. max.) sitting than I do in a whole week. The short-rbs, potato salad, green salad. EVERYTHING is over-sugared, as is their specialty Soju pouches I am sure. The average American consumes 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day, more than double the recommended amount. That's 57 pounds of sugar a year. Gen, in my opinion, contributes to the alarming epidemic afflicting Americans. read more

We went there for a birthday dinner. We were welcomed nicely and seated but for some reason the waitress who was attending for us was in a hurry. She came to get our order but we only get the part of what we ordered and she is hard to get hold to, we waited for the other food patiently but it never came and I saw her near the bar in her phone. Suddenly I saw her leaving the restaurant and they never had anyone to replace her for us. Imagine how are you gonna have to order in that set up of restaurant without anyone to get what you wanted? The grill is already black and smoky until the one from the reception came in to attend us. We felt neglected even we were being patient with them as we had been here for a lot of time. We even paid our bill by the reception as no one is there to give us our bill. Such a really bad experience for a birthday dinner. We should have not given any tip but my wife is very nice not to. Now, I would make this restaurant the least choice whenever we go to collection or I might not even go back to this restaurant at all. I've been to this Gen Korean BBQ location many times now. I have a restaurant near home and I was really glad to see that there's a location here in Oxnard. I'm out here at The Collection pretty often when I'm in town so this is another great place for me to dine at. I was able to find parking around the corner from there but they're all metered parking and it was a dollar per hour and it only took the coins so that was a challenge to have enough coins on me. Ever since the pandemic started I think they want you to make a reservation on yelp and that's the system they use to stay organized. You can do it through the app so it'll save you some time for when you get to the restaurant and don't have to wait. Be sure to scan the menu if you're able to. The most recent visit we weren't prompted to and it caused a slight delay in ordering. Typically I know exactly what I want but I was with guests and wanted to make sure I didn't order anything too weird. This tends to be a very popular place so they can get pretty busy. They do tend to get kind of slammed so take advantage of when the team members stop by so you can either order more food and drinks and if you're looking for any grill changes. Some of my favorite items that are underrated are the pork jowl, the beef tongue (if they'll ever have this again), or any item with the Cajun sauce. -Staff would not sit us because I had to urgently use the restroom and our party was "not there" even though I was in YOUR restroom. My sister had to ask me to hurry up in the middle of using the restroom because she's pregnant and she couldn't stand for long durations and they refused to sit us because I wasn't there. We'll be back" -they didn't apologize for my sister or rushing me out of the bathroom to walk to the front so they could "see me". They sat us literally next to the bathroom so I dont know why they couldn't just sit them and confirm when I came out. I know that people lie and don't have full parties there to get seated but THEY SAW Me! So clearly I was there -the steak was terrible. It was so tough I couldn't swallow it, i had to spit it out. -my dish was cracked and my sauce went went everywhere (pic added) -I ended up excusing myself and sitting at the bar so I wouldn't be charged for AYCE because the only thing I wanted to eat was the steak and it was not edible -it's freezing inside because they keep the doors and windows open because of the bbq -they do -they don't have Wi-Fi and their menu is QR. The collections is a dead zone for my phone service so I couldn't see the menu -asked us if we were sure if we wanted all" the banchan. Heck yes we do, you pay for it so we should get it. First of all the new management brought gens downhill. When we were getting our food, these guys brought stuff that was not ours. When my friend tried to tell him that it wasnot ours, he walked away and did not understand us. Most of the workers did not understand us and only spoke spanish. Not to be racist, but this is a KOREAN resturant. There were tacos and mexican food at a korean resturant. They also took out seoul fries and that needa to come back. The meat tasted frozen and the KFC was burnt and cold. The KFC also had a frozen taste to it. Another server was also refusing to give my friend water.
