I was wowed by the bakery clean spacious and bright. Pastries,cakes and baked breads galore - it's got that "kid in a candy store" feel to it! The staff was very nice and willing to answer any questions. Since we are in the market for a wedding cake - we browsed through the "wedding cake book" They looked nice, but appeared to be all fondant, the prices were also listed - that was helpful and gave us a gauge on prices. We brought some goodies home to try tiramisu, a "rum" napoleon, a fruit tart and two cupcakes. They all looked very nice, but meh, meh, meh. Stale and flavorless. We were looking forward to our desserts. Perhaps they make too many items that don't sell quickly, and then the pastries are sitting around in display cases. Honestly I would rather a bakery make less and have it run out than an over abundance of stuff that is sitting around. I don't think I will return, nor make this bakery a contender for our wedding cake. read more

The pastries are great. I have never had anything that was not excellent from Gencarelli's. The lobster tails are out of sight and the cannoli are always fresh because they fill them when you order them, so they are never soggy. The service is quick and the staff is attentive. All the girls behind the counter are young high schoolers but they are all super professional and informative. I have only had one bad experience there and it was from an older woman who worked there. I asked if one of the pound cakes had chocolate chips in them. She looked at me like I had three heads. She was really rude and it was apparent that she did not care if she offended a customer or not. She must be related to the owners because I can't see them keeping someone like that on the payroll otherwise. Its a real shame considering everything else there so great. Maybe she should take some lessons from her staff on good customer service. read more

Gencarelli's is my go to place for all dessert goodness. I've been coming to them for God-knows-when and I've never been disappointed. I've had their pastries, donuts, cookies, bread, cakes, and even gelato and they always deliver when it comes to freshness and flavor. Walking in to the bakery you are instantly greeted by the beautiful aroma of baked goods emanating from the kitchen and the gorgeous array of pastries in the display case in front of you. I consider them more works of art and at times find it hard to eat because of how great their baked goods are. Chefs and food critics always say we first eat with our eyes so in that regards you'll stuff yourself silly by simply perusing the selections that they have. And what a selection indeed! They have fruit tarts, black forest pastries, hazelnut mousse, and cappuccino butter crème pastries. I've tried all of them and I can't pick which one is my favorite. It would be like asking a parent who's his favorite child. There is however one caveat to that statement. I will undoubtedly declare my love for their cannoli without reservation. They are some of the best I've had and I can say that without any bias. Ordering a cake with them is also very easy. I've done so for mostly every occasion (except for a wedding) and they've always done themselves proud with how their product turns out. The half sheet and whole sheet cakes can feed a lot of people and the prices are very reasonable. How reasonable you ask? You can get a great tasting half sheet cake beautifully decorated for about $50-60. They are willing to work with you to make sure that you get that perfect dessert delight that you're looking for. On one occasion I ordered two cakes for my godson and goddaughter's birthday with a Disney Frozen and Cars theme and it looked amazeballs. I wished that it was my birthday instead. The print of the pictures and the decorating to match it was professionally done. Gencarelli's has never disappointed me and because of that they've continually earned by business. read more

A good but not spectacular bakery. Certain things are outstanding, like their hazelnut cake. Certain things are pretty standard like their chocolate layer cake. The bread is just ok. Calandra's and Nicola's are far superior. Decent enough cookies. Even the service is hit and miss. Some are nice, friendly and helpful. Some couldn't be bothered. For example, a few weeks ago, I called in advance to have an already baked cake decorated with writing for a birthday. I had intended to pick it up on my way to work. When I arrived, 30 minutes later, I was told, that they did in fact remember that I'd called ahead to order the cake. Then they said they'd start on it right away! Start on it??? Why did I waste my time calling ahead? If it weren't for the fact that it's close to work, I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. read more

I really enjoyed my ricotta cheesecake. What is even better, is that I was able to take the cheesecake to St. Louis to share it with my 85 year old uncle. I couldn't believe that cake made the commute, flight and car trip without a blemish and in such a terrible rainstorm! Moreover, according to my aging uncle, it wasn't too sweet and it wasn't too dry. Just like in Goldilocks and the Three Bears, this ricotta cheese cake was, "Just right!" Gencarelli's Bakery is a very nice neighborhood bakery. The young clerks did not have an Italian flare, but they were very polite and helpful. I also loved the little crunchy ricotta cheese filled pastry. I introduced this pastry to my sweetheart, he enjoyed this also. I'm not a huge fan of bakeries (I know...I'm weird) but I LOVE their Hazelnut Mouse Cake. HOLY SMOKES!!! Don't put socks on because it'll knock your socks off. It has crispy waffers between layers of hazelnut mouse and is topped with chocolate ganache. It's the only local bakery I know that sells this cake. You can order it ahead of time or take your chances that it'll be there when you just stop in. The cool part is if you don't want to put a whole cake (which is pretty small) for $25 ( I think...it might be $20), you can get a little personal sized one for $2.50! The staff is always friendly and even when it's super crowded, the line moves pretty fast. The prices are FANTASTIC. Unfortunately had to downgrade my rating to just 3 stars. The quality is slipping at this bakeshop - along with the service. We've been back a few more times. Last time I ordered a half dozen cannolis, and the filling was bad - like old bad. Runny and inedible, which I didn't notice until I opened the box at home. Very disappointing. The cakes are okay. Most of them are starting to taste alike, I still recommend the cannoli cake or the lemon cake but stay away from anything with chocolate - it will be dry and flavorless. read more

The Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse Cake and the Strawberry NY Style Cheesecake are seriously the best cake and cheesecake you'll ever eat in your life. Since I've discovered this place, it's a staple in my family for me to bring these cakes to birthday and holiday events. I especially love to bring them to events when we have guests over who have never tried them before. When I let someone try these cakes for the first time, I always get the same priceless reaction. You know the reaction when you eat something so so good and your totally mindblowned by how amazing it is that you close your eyes and start nodding and make that big 'Mmm...' sound. I LOVE that reaction lol. The 30 minute drive to Gencarelli is always worth it. Because of the distance and awesome prices too, I always pick up multiple cakes. I usually call in advanced to make sure they have cakes available and they always always have cakes in stock even during the peak holiday season. read more

This bakery sells stale cakes proudly on there shelves. I found their cakes are stale on the shelves unless you have one ordered . I bought a coffee cake today and a few other danishes and they were all stale. I would not recommend buying from them. Only there breads taste fresh. read more

I am only giving 2 stars as for the service that Julia gave me. One... she was rude and had an attitude. I honestly did not appreciate her customer service. I walked in the bakery in Bloomfield to see 5 girls working.. Anyway, She was quick to ask if I was getting helped, and so I proceeded to ask questions of certain cakes that were not displayed... So I asked her if I can take a look at them... I asked to see 2 cakes and when going in and out of the room in the back, where I guess they store their cakes. She came out and showed such annoyance when I said no thank you to one of the cakes. She showed horrible customer service. I left with 2 cakes, a Red Velvet Cake and a White Cake Mocca Layer, which was delicious. For one of the cake I asked for a written message, let me tell you....she even looked more annoyed than ever and paused for a good minute and looked at her co-worker and said to her co-worker "you want to write it".......whatever, I did not care anymore.. at this point she was making my blood boil, I just wanted to get out of there..
