Great bread - decently priced, loved loved loved the red velvet cake!

I come up to North Jersey every few weeks to visit family and make a stop here to grab some Italian bread to take home. I end up freezing the bread and eating it until the next time I can hit up Gencarelli's. I've also purchased a few birthday cakes over the past year and each one has been better than the last. The lemon vanilla cake was perfect for a group that didn't want something too sweet and rich. This is OUR bakery -- it's my go to place for every holiday and everytime I need to bring a dessert. People are always blown away by the pastries I bring from there, but really, I've never gone wrong here. My only MINOR complaint would be that on holidays there is quite a wait. I once waited over an hour on Christmas morning. But it's so worth it for the bread and the desserts, I don't really mind. read more

Bottom line: We don't live in the area. We don't even live in the state. But we keep coming back because we love the variety, the prices and the quality. Classic NJ Italian bakery that I crave. Cannoli were filled to order, and divine! The mini sfogatelli -- surprise was there was some cookie-ish dough with jam inside...nope, not what I had in mind. BEST RAINBOW COOKIES I HAVE EVER HAD. Everything else is fresh and delicious as well. I just wish the staff was a bit more friendly. I always feel very rushed and under pressure when I'm there. Nothing in the bakery cases is labeled so if you ask what something is, the employees are not always very friendly about it. read more

Sadly, I live right around the corner from Genacarelli's. Sadly, they have the hands-down best no-frills cookies, pastries and breads around. It is due to this that I've had to alter my daily route, so not to be tempted by the rows of glass cases displaying an array of pies, cakes, and to-die-for cheesecakes. Ordered my daughter's first birthday cake and it was amazing. White cake with strawberry and custard filling. Everybody loved it! I sent a picture of the design I wanted and it turned out better than the picture. Grabbed a bag of cookies to get in the good graces of a new boss and she cannot stop talking about them! I decided to try this bakery since the ones close to me haven't been good lately. I ordered a black and white Mother's Day cake but when I went to pick it up there was some kind of mix up and they didn't have it. It was so busy there and they could of easily said pick something else but instead they apologized and made me the cake I had ordered. it was worth the wait! One of the better bakery in the area. Everything is fresh and good quality. My favorite is the hazel nut cake. The pastries aren't too sweet. I'm not a big fan of bread but I'll have bread from here. Everything I've had tastes fantastic. They're always busy, but keep the line moving quickly. They do have a parking lot but it is TINY. Great Wedding Cake! My family has been using Gencarelli's for years so they were a natural stop for us on our wedding cake hunt. The consultation was rather informal; we were given a few things to try and selected our design on our own. The staff an Gencarelli's was friendly and pleasant. They also left my husband and I on our own to make our decision which was such a nice change from everyone else! The cake was beautiful AND very tasty. We had many compliments. Just went today for the first time based on a local's recommendation and it was by far one one of the best italian bakeries I have been too. Cookies galore, fresh old fashioned donuts and some of the best semolina loaf in Bergen county! Also ordered a birthday cake. Hope it is as delicious as everything I tried. Got a cheesecake for $14.50. Was probably one of the most delicious cheesecakes ever- super smooth and not too sweet. Only reason I deducted a star was that the workers behind the counter seemed like they were more interested in whatever high-school gossip they were talking about than in taking care of their customers. read more

We gave our daughter a 16th birthday party with an international travel theme. We tried many bakeries, before coming to Gencarelli's Bakery on Broad Street in Bloomfield, NJ. The baker took my daughter's ideas and created a cake and cupcakes to compliments her theme and colors. They placed the items on a tiered stand, making a substantial visual presence. The cupcakes were not only a moist and delicious, but also a nice ending to a good meal. They were also modest in cost about a $1.00 a cupcake. The manager and staff were a pleasure to work with. This review is long overdue as my family and I have been long time patrons of Gencarelli's for years. This Place is the Best! I am not really into birthday cakes as most cakes icing taste heavy and horrible. I've had countless cakes from them and they are always on point. Their icing is so light and delicious and their cake fillings of fresh strawberry or banana filling are refreshing.
