I would have never known this place existed if I hadn't ordered a tire online and the seller had a note that shipping was free if I did a will call at Cycle Gear. OK... they are just a couple of miles away so why not. So looking at the place I figured it was mostly targeted at relatively new riders who were looking for helmets and other rider gear. And they certainly have racks of that stuff. Talking to one of the guys at the desk I inquired about rotor upgrades and he said, "sure!". Pulled out a catalog and showed me a few choices that would fit my bike. This fellow was clearly more knowledgeable than those guys at a parts store. You know the type. What year, model, engine size, color, blah, blah, blah so that they can figure out what windshield wiper will fit. And inevitably hand you a part that DOESN'T fit. So in chatting I find out they will install tires if you bring in the wheel. Install and balance for a pretty reasonable price. I see that at least one Yelper complained that the store manager would not allow him to watch the process which could be a problem for me. That's my life we're talking about. I do my own work or I watch whoever is doing the work to be sure it's done correctly. If that's going to be a problem for them I will be forced to update this review. But for now, my experience with Cycle Gear has been 100% positive. Great prices. Great staff. Easy to get to. Lots of parking. I haven't looked over their inventory closely but I suspect that most repair and maintenance items will need to be ordered which is usually not a problem for me. I buy pretty much nothing at the dealerships and, in fact, the dealerships usually don't have what I need in stock anyway. So I can buy for less online. Not that it's a big deal for my purposes but Cycle Gear is more geared to sport bike riders and not Harleys. I wouldn't be caught dead wearing most of the gear they have on the rack. No judgments and no minus stars. CG knows their market and their model seems to be working for them. I'm just happy to have a resource to have tires installed and also purchase parts from. The gang at Beaverton Trek helped me decide how best to make a change without negatively impacting the balance of the bike, and without breaking the bank. She had a customer who was older, hard of hearing, and English was their second language. She dealt so compassionately and patiently with them. She mirrored the terms they used to make sure they felt understood, and spoke slowly and carefully so they could hear and follow her. She managed a crowded shoe section with ease, keeping track of who arrived when, and giving everyone the attention she needed. She never acted rushed or stressed. I didn't even interact with her, yet she contributed to my good experience!

My high-end cycle shop in Redmond replaced alloy wheels with Enve carbon wheels on my vintage…read moreColnago C-50. However, they didn't replace the brake pads for the new carbon wheels. On a bike tour, I found Universal and brought my squealing brakes to Billy. Not only were the brake pads wrong, the brakes should have been replaced because the wheels are wider. As Billy investigated further, he found the mechanic had also snapped the front brake cable fixing bolt. Had this not been found I could have experienced a catastrophic brake failure. Universal had the brakes I needed in stock, Billy sent me to lunch and replaced the brakes and pads within the hour so that I could continue the tour safely and with the correct brake system. Most times, this is sufficient. I didn't receive a response so I called their store and was told that "unfortunately, it is already out the door." I was appalled as I was trying to save them (and me, the customer) the headaches of refusing an order after shipping as well as the shipping cost but instead, they shipped it anyhow, caring less. Instead, he (the gentleman who answered the phone) tried to blame it on me that I didn't call earlier and gave me some excuse that maybe the email got lost in SPAM...the email I used to respond to their email. Yes, it was my mistake, but I tried to right it immediately. The next time my son needs a part, we will not shop here at Universal Cycles Company... and you should not use them as well as they don't understand customer service and feel comfortable blaming the customer for their shortcomings. Now instead of solving the problem quickly, we both are going to go through weeks of angst.
