But seriously, if you take your car to the dealer for service, try taking it to Gene's for a second opinion. My guess is you'll save money. Not just because he charges less, but he will consistently find you're being told you need services that you just don't need. I have been with Gene since 1986. I send my friends there an personally guarantee them that he will provide honest service. He will tell you from his experience what you need and don't need. He then lets you make the informed decision. The problem for me? Too many people find out about him and use his repair services. My family and I have been going to Gene's for more than10 years and I would trust him with my first born child. I've had a few maintenance-challenged cars and I remember being overwhelmed with dealer quotes. I went to Gene's on a recommendation from a friend when I was 16 and have been going repeatedly since. I haven't actually gone here for service yet, but if they are even half as helpful when I do go as when I spoke with them on the phone I am never changing repair shops! I have an issue with my car that I need addressed ASAP. When I called, Gene explained they were swamped and wouldn't be able to get to me for a few days. BUT instead of lying to me and having me come sit and wait for ages while they try to squeeze me in, or just leaving me out in the wind, he gave me his recommendations for good places to go so I wouldn't need to wait days. Needless to say on the principle alone that they seem to care more for the customer than for $$, I will be coming back. read more

Notice how the only one who doesn't give 5 stars is a person trying to get the auto shop to install ahalf price, discount ebay bought hose? This is exactly WHY we only use Gene's...because he won't do shoddy work. He won't put on for example, a junk hose and have you blow it out with your family in the desert at 120 degrees - then blame him for it...he just won't do it. It is not in MY best interest to recommend Gene's since his prices will go up as more people go to him, but he is honest, honest, honest. Not cheap, but fair. read more

I actually haven't gone to this dealership to get my car repaired or serviced but I did call since I had the intention to go in, but I just wanted some additional information before taking my car in. So I actually had 3 different things that I needed to repair/get diagnostics for: 1) my tire sensor is acting up 2.) service airbag sign is on 3.) my parking/backing up sensor is not working. The guy on the phone was very honest and gave me suggestions and he didn't try to up-sell me on anything and he wasn't like some of the other car repair shops to desperately attempt to get customers in for something that they don't specialize in. Just having that kind of honesty and reassurance over the phone is wonderful. If I have any other future repairs that perhaps they can service, I will definitely call them again and hopefully be able use them for repairs. All these 5 star reviews but I'm not convinced this place is what it seems its like. Went in for some help because my check engine light wasn't showing. The 10 min repair took over 5 hrs. I was waiting and promised the repair would be finished quick, I come back....still waiting. Went to go get lunch, came back....still waiting. Finally the mechanic fixes what seems like a quick fix, turns out to be a $210 repair, for a bulb. I could've gotten more work done but just left a bad taste. What really pissed me off was that it took forever to repair, especially when there was nobody in front of me. read more

Gene and Ray, lifesavers! I purchased a new (old) 93 Mustang GT and took it over to their shop to look over why my car had a low idle, trying to figure out what was the deal with the transmission and why it wouldn't go into 4th gear, and just a general overview of the motor etc. Gene and Ray were super informative and a tremendous help and 100% fair on pricing. Turns out a rat chewed up some wiring, they found other minor issues and just let me know off-hand things they noticed wrong with my car. They did all the repairs needed and also were nice enough to look into some of the car history for me, stuff I had no idea about! I also asked him his recommendations with mufflers, transmissions, smogging, etc and he had awesome guys for everything I threw at him. But what I really appreciate is being able to walk into a garage as a woman and know I'm being treated fairly. We used to take our cars for simple oil changes to other places because it was more convenient to do it on the weekends, but it got to the point where I had to have my husband with me because I knew they treated me differently if I didn't have a man with me. As a woman, you just know these things. Gene always explains your car issues well and will be honest with what is worth fixing or not. He also knows what car makes perform well. I met Gene through a friend about 20 years ago when my Ford Escort had transmission problems. Transmissions are a mystery and you really have no choice when your told what the cost will be. I had it towed to 3 different repair shops and got estimates of between $1475 and $2800. Gene 's estimate was $425 and I went on to drive the car for 3 more years and had no problems. I have since had 4 or five cars and have had Gene service then all. This man is the real deal. He is an honest man with integrity which is a rare find. I waited about 2 months to write this review. I wanted to make sure that the issue with my car would not start up again after taking it to Gene's Auto Repair. Service: Excellent! I had called in ahead and explained the issue with my vehicle and set up an appointment for later that day. I arrive to find out that Gene had an idea what the issue was and had ordered the parts to fix my vehicle. His employee's ran a diagnostic on my vehicle and came to the conclusion that the issue I was experiencing was 1 of 2 things. He clearly explained the code on the diagnostic machine(Never had a mechanic do that) and gave me the options on how to go about fixing the issue. Results: After about a 45min wait(very fast) I received my vehicle and went on my way. I immediately noticed the acceleration issue was gone and it has been gone since I've taken my vehicle to Gene's. I've had 2 other mechanics try to fix this issue before and have failed and it has cost me plenty of money. Gene was able to not only fix the issue in a timely manner, but provided excellent and honest service! If you need any service on your vehicle go to Gene's Auto Repair, you will not regret it. This happened back in 2009 but is worth writing about. Had my RV loaded up for a trip when I ran into problems on the freeway "death wobble". Took it to the first shop I could find - which was Gene's. Did not know anything about the shop but they worked late and repaired the problem and got me back on the road first thing next morning. We have not had anything MAJOR yet to go to Gene for, but I will not hesitate when we do. I took out car to Gene for some "check engine" lights. He could've told me it was anything and definitely gotten money out of me (I couldn't pass smog with a "check engine" light on!). He told me it probably just needed to be reset, which he did for FREE!!! He has helped us numerous times like this - always for free! Finally, we did need a starter replaced on our teen's car. In and out in 1 hour for UNDER the bid. (I think around $300.) He is honest, fast, and has GREAT customer service! read more

Gene is very reliable and very honest. We've lived in Irvine for 24 years and started using Gene (as I remember) right when we arrived. All our non-dealer work has gone to him, one of our neighbors always uses him, and we've referred a number of people to him over the years. Everyone has been treated fairly and with respect. If you lived out of town but your car broke down here, Gene's is the type of shop you'd hope you would end up at. And if your daughter attended college here, Gene is the type of person a parent in San Francisco could talk to and know their daughter wasn't going to get taken advantage of. Added August, 2011: Freeway Honda told me the frozen lug nut on my Odyssey would cost $280 to replace AND that my rear wheel brake cylinders were leaking, at a $315 cost to repair. Gene replaced the frozen lug nut for $60 and said the rear wheel brake cylinder leak was imaginary. read more

When you hear of reports of mechanics adding on unnecessary repairs, having gene say 'you don't need that yet' was really great. Honest, knowledgable, kind, caring and fair. That is how I would describe Gene. All the years I have taken my Lexus to the dealer not realizing how much more I was paying then I should have. Yes, I don't get a "free" rental car or a huge lounge with TV, coffee etc. but saving money is more important to me as long as I am receiving quality care. Gene, the proprietor, mans the front desk. He is very friendly and personable. The quote for a tire rotation was $22 bucks (Seems very reasonable). This was around 10am and I asked him how long it would take, expecting a long wait. Gene said, "I'll pull one of my guy's off what they are doing and do it right now (30 mins) After the work was done, he advised me that I had a nail in one of my tires and instead of trying to sell me on a fix, he told me that America's Tires around the corner fixed tire leaks for free out of goodwill, and they did. I found two great auto repair places in one day (Unprecedented). I can't wait for my car to need repairs again so I can go back to Gene's (Seriously!). read more
