Attempted to try and order food this afternoon. What we saw from the people enjoying their meals, it did look delicious. BUT, we were NEVER SERVED! It was our first time there, and we had entered in the wrong way. After multiple apologies, AND having the gentleman with sleeved arms look at us twice and turn away. We then went to the appropriate window, and we then recognized by the original person and two others, still NO ACKNOWLEDGMENT of our presence. There was a long line for pick up, and a party of three walking up, but still no "hey, be right there ", or "Give us just a second ". So simple yet so delicious :) I have eyed this place for 20+ years but never bothered to stop by and give it a try. Today I was meeting a buddy for lunch and I suggested something fresh and cold (it's a hott day) he immediately replayed with Grinders. So here it was... finally my chance to give this place a try. I walked up to the window, took a look at the menu and immediately placed my order. I'm very basic lol so I got the Salami Sandwich and a drink. The sandwiches either come in a large or small and both are at a reasonable price. Minutes after I ordered my number was called and I finally got to sit and enjoy a nice fresh sandwich. My sandwich was so fresh and very tasteful, I got the small and it was just a perfect size for one. The girls working the front were extremely friendly and very helpful. I asked a few questions and felt a bit silly for asking because the answers were pretty much on the menu in front of my eyes but they didn't seem to mind. As I sat and enjoyed my meal and the the perfect weather outside I overheard a lady being a bit loud and complaining. As I payed more attention her complaints were nonsense and I kinda felt bad that the staff had to deal with her shenanigans but they were very professional and handled that situation well. I even had to let the staff know they did great after that customer left and make light of the situation. I picked up a roast beef today expecting a pile of beef. What I got didn't look anything like the roast beef pictured on their website, skimpy on the beef. The roll was very fresh though. My dad was randomly craving grinders one day from reminiscing his trip to New York, so we decided to try Gene's Grinders in the neighborhood. Note that they're close on weekends! Gene's Grinders is located just slightly south of old town Monrovia, ample parking on the street as well as a small lot. There are some open patio space for dine in but obviously with the current situation, everything was sectioned off. Those patio seating actually reminds me of my last trip to Philly eating cheesesteaks! We ordered the large hot pastrami sandwich and a large french dip and it was deeeeeeefintely a lot of food for even 4 people! We even had leftover and the amount of meat they pile onto the sandwich is absurd! I actually really liked the bread they use compared to the cheesesteak I've had in Philly, and my dad thought that Gene's Grinders were better than ones he had from New York!! The pick up process was very smooth and quick, I had call in to order ahead and my food was ready upon arrival. You can also pay with card as well! We will definitely be coming back again! read more

Yummy sandwiches in a little hidden spot in old town Monrovia. Portions are generous and reasonably priced. Always feel good supporting our local mom and pop shops. I ordered a large pastrami dip sandwich with fries. What a delight! Definitely large enough to share with someone else. Fries are freshly fried when ordered. They also have their own lemonade and iced tea! I brought the sandwich home to eat and it was even tastier when I toasted it. You get a lot of protein with the order. I can't wait to come back again. They have specials on Monday to Friday as well. Last tip is that you can add an avocado for only $1 or 2 depending on the amount you want. They are open Monday to Saturday from 10:30am to 3pm.
