Today, we visited this place based on a recommendation from one of my friends, and I wanted to leave an honest review. We came to this fast food restaurant in Pasadena because a friend highly recommended it, and I have to say it completely exceeded my expectations. If you're looking to experience fast food at its absolute highest quality, I truly believe this is the place to visit. In my opinion, this restaurant is one of those iconic places that every tourist should experience. As you can see, the line is incredibly long, and people are willing to wait because it's absolutely worth it. Even though they're extremely busy, everything is managed so efficiently. This is one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I've ever had without a doubt. I've been here a few times now, and all three times I got The Sando. My favorite spice level is Medium. As someone who loves spicy food, I did try the Hot spice level once, and I was warned that it would be pretty hot. Honestly I didn't think it would be that hot. But, it was pretty hot haha. I can't say enough great things on their world class staff, exceptional service, and amazing foods + drinks. This establishment brings it every day! My most recent visit was full of spicy and sweet surprises. The young gentleman behind the register was super friendly and helpful. He offered shake fries on the house so I can try them. Thank you! If you ever want one thing in LA, it HAS to be Howlin' Rays. I came on a Friday early afternoon and only waited maybe 20 minutes which isn't bad at all. I know that the long lines seem really intimidating but it's worth it. I love the community feel this place has because all the employees' are friendly and it feels like you're at home. If you want a table, they have these 'reserved' placards placed on the table but it's not really reserved and more so, for one of the employees to "seat" you down at a clean table. Food: Sando medium spice (9.5/10): First time trying medium and it wasn't too spicy. We didn't get rid of anything so it comes with slaw and pickles on top of a spice coated chicken breast sandwiched in between toasted bread. I do wish that the spice was more evenly distributed throughout the chicken since the most spicy part was at the beginning with the solid crunch. The slaw adds a nice freshness with every bite so it doesn't feel as heavy. The pickles add a touch of acidity and I don't think that it was acidic to the point where it overpowered everything. French Fries (9/10): Crispy exterior with a soft, fluffy interior are my cup of tea. The seasoning they use adds a nice spice to each bite. There is a way to chat up the customer while still keeping things moving along, but I've not seen it once while there; the chicken is that good that I put up with my least favorite thing at a restaurant--unnecessary conversation that adds to the wait time. The ambiance is also not my favorite. It's too loud in there. The music could be a touch lower--I'm there to eat, not be at the club--and the top notch cooks in the back yell a lot. I will say that the yelling appears to keep them upbeat, positive, and motivated; I see the value in it, yet it's the reason I get delicious chicken to go. We visited on a slightly rainy Saturday, 4/26/26, and it was excellent. The line is usually 45+ minutes and wraps around the building, into the parking lot. Because of the precipitation, we only waited about 20 minutes. The restaurant is a well oiled machine with all of the staff working in sync. The cashier was super friendly, offering samples of chicken for folks unsure of the spice level to order or of the beer on tap. We ordered the Tenders entree with the option to have a different spice level for each of the three tenders...but I made all three medium spice. My husband ordered The Sando at a medium spice level. And we each ordered Shake Fries - very crispy and well seasoned crinkle cut fries. Pro tip, order a Tennessee Tang dipping sauce - ranch with dill, super yummy. The medium is the perfect spice level for us - enough heat for flavor and to water the nose a bit. There is a Medium Plus that gives me the hiccups and I won't go any hotter. The space is polished concrete floors, half booths along the windows across the pick up counter, and tables long the windows facing Arroyo Parkway. The parking lot is way too tiny, so we usually don't bother and just park on the street. This place is worth the wait and definitely eat at the restaurant so it's hot and fresh. We brought a group of six to Howlin' Rays on Father's Day and it lived up to expectations. Since my only real comparison for authentic hot chicken is Hattie B's in Nashville, I did a little research before ordering. I heard that Howlin' Rays runs a bit hotter than Hattie B's, so I adjusted accordingly and went with the Mild Plus. It was the perfect call. It gave me the exact amount of kick I wanted without losing any of the flavor. Our group tried a range of spice levels from the zero heat Country chicken up to the Medium. The people who got the Medium said it was really good and hits that great sweet spot of high heat and excellent flavor. We ordered a mix of the sandos and the chicken tenders, and everyone was incredibly happy with their meal. They do have chicken and waffles on the menu, though nobody in our group ended up trying that this time around. For sides, we got the fries, coleslaw, and the collard greens that were all good. But holy cow I've learn it can be true (sometimes)! I went to the Pasadena location and loved my experience there. Parking can be a bit tight but manageable. The service is super dope and chill, and from the two times I've been there, they are great at making you feel comfortable. I ordered the chicken sando with mild heat and this was the juiciest and most flavorful fried chicken sandwich I've ever had. The spice did not overpower the flavor, and the coleslaw helped to balance the saltiness of the sandwich perfectly. I also got their shake fries, which are crispy and flavorful, but a tad bit on the sweet side. It is far time I leave a review for Howlin' Rays, mainly because I keep forgetting my order and want it memorialized. Used to live in LA and loved going to Howlin' Rays, on this trip back I got to try out the Pasadena spot for the first time. Glad to say it's just as good, if not better, than the original spot given the amount of seating! Arrived around 6 pm on a Friday and waited around 30 minutes to order? Really not bad at all. All the servers were so friendly as always and that really is what makes Howlin Ray's the cream of the crop. The cashier got me a sample of the medium plus to try, as I couldn't remember if I got a medium plus or hot sando. I ordered the luis style sando, no cheese (although I might get the cheese next time to help with the spice) and medium plus, and then a single hot wing because I'm a masochist. My friends ordered the fries (otherwise I would order them as well, fries are amazing!). This location also had Pliny the Elder on tap so I got that as well. I will say, I always go for heat but my friend's got mild and that really slapped as well. The chicken is just so well cooked, I'm lucky I don't live nearby or I'd be here every week. This place has some of the friendliest service around and what I love is that you have to wait to be seated- which takes out that customer competition anxiety to secure a table while you're waiting in a long line. The fried pickles are a must get if you like fried pickles and can't find them anywhere outside of Carnation Cafe inside Disneyland. They are crispy, briny chips of deliciousness. Seriously the best Nashville-style hot chicken ever. The menu is fairly simple and straightforward. There are 6 various levels of heat, including "Country" which has no heat at all. I usually stick with Mild, as this is the perfect amount of heat for me. Medium is already too spicy for me. My husband, on the other hand, prefers Country, which is still delicious. My go-to here is The Sando, which contains a humongous piece of boneless chicken breast, slaw, comeback sauce, and pickles inside 2 butter buns. The chicken is so flavorful and juicy, while the slaw creates a wonderful cooling effect, and the sauce adds a mouthwatering richness. The crinkle-cut shake fries are super delicious to eat on the side. They have a bold, peppery seasoning that pairs perfectly with the hot chicken. The portion is quite big as well, making it great for sharing. As for the Chicken & Waffles, I thought this was just ok. I personally am not a big fan of this combination. I do like that you can choose the types of chicken pieces to have with the waffle, whether it's the breast & wing, leg & thigh, 3 tenders, or 3 wings. The chicken was fried perfectly with a crispy exterior and tender interior. If it's available, I recommend getting the banana pudding as a sweet dessert. It is the perfect treat to have after eating some hot chicken. The taste is sweet and creamy, with the perfect balance of banana and vanilla flavors. The service here is exceptional, with all the employees being high-energy and friendly. For obvious reasons, this restaurant has long lines and is packed with customers. The wait times are reasonable and even surprisingly fast, considering how popular it gets. Parking could be difficult during peak hours. read more
