I like the concept where I get to choose my protein, my vegetables, my starch (rice, noodles) and get to pick from a selection of a couple of dozen variety of sauces all of which gets nicely stir-fried right in front of you. Great place for lunch/dinner. Pretty in-expensive as well. Though it gets a bit crowded during peak hours but all in all a great place to eat. Plenty of options for meat lovers as well as vegetarians. Though you need to be a bit careful as to what sauce you pick as it can spoil your meal. Desserts are goooood! read more

The ONLY reason this is not a 4 star review... is because they still allow smoking. After my first experience with Genghis Grill over in Plano.. I had not been back, although I had planned on it. But then I received an email from Genghis Grill's website offering me a free bowl for my birthday. Since I had already driven back to my side of the hood, I ended up taking my birthday coupon to the Addison location. I get so frustrated when I forget about Addison allowing smoking when the rest of the Metroplex has a brain. I felt guilty because I didn't have any cash to tip the waiter, so after my free bowl and my glass of water... my bill would have been $0. So, I ordered a brownie sundae for dessert. That was one of the best brownie desserts I have had. This one's a little tough. Genghis was were I first experienced Mongolian, so I feel a little loyalty, but in all honesty, the franchise has lost it's way. Originally, the concept was like most Mongolian places: get your meats, veggies, spices and sauces, then have them stir-fried to your delight. Genghis held it's own and turned out a really good product. The problems started when Genghis tried to outdo a competitor called BD's (now out of business in Texas sadly). BD's had a nicer atmosphere and better ingredients, so Genghis started changing processes and ingredients, seemingly in an effort to beat the competition. While they outlasted BD's, they also managed to break the things that made them really good: lots of variety, quality ingredients and a simple process to make your meal. Don't get me wrong; it's still a pretty good product, just not what it was. I had my first GG experience in Texarkana last week. The location was new and spacious, which is the exact opposite of this Addison location. This place is tiny and crowded, and not very clean. If you aren't familiar with the process.. Basically, you get a bowl and you fill it with veggies, meats, etc. and they fry it up on the grill for you. It seems like a healthy concept, but check the nutritional information on the website before you are fooled. You can make your visit more healthy by choosing the right items. I don't get GG's confusion. It seems as though they haven't decided to be a buffet style place or a sit down eatery. I would prefer not to have a server, since they really just bring your drinks and still require a 20% tip. Why not just put in a soda fountain? I also don't get why they don't offer a variety of bowl sizes. I don't eat enough to fill the bowl that costs $9.99, seems like a waste of money. I love Genghis. This location gets super busy during lunch time. I used to work around here and I come here once a week. I've learned to stack my bowl pretty high. They normally have the meats first, but if you do the veggies first, you can get so much more. And if you love veggies as much as I do, you can have the best of both worlds doing this. I also mix all of my sauces together. I would have 4 different sauces in the container. I use all the ones that says "good with everything". If you love customizing and creating your own dishes at a restaurant then you will love this place. If you don't then they also have dishes created that u can get. I don't by any means think it's true Mongolian but there is good food and a variety of drinks (alcoholic & nonalcoholic). I came here with my boyfriend and we ordered edamame, built our own bowls and ice cream for dessert. The edamame was seasoned with garlic and citrus which was good but the edamame was a bit burnt from cooking on their flat top. It's not a big deal with edamame since you don't eat the shell but sometimes getting those burned pieces as you pop them out is not pleasant. When you build your own bowl it's a very easy process. You get the bowl and sauce cup and go through a "buffet" style line choosing all your ingredients. You can have as much as you can fill in the bowl so don't be shy. You pick your starch on the card you get at the table that states your name and table number to hand off with your built bowl. After they cook it they bring it to your table. The dessert was two scoops of vanilla ice cream with a very light drizzle of chocolate on top. Not to sound completely unhealthy but I definitely would've preferred more chocolate drizzled. I forgot to mention the drinks earlier but they do have many choices. I had the sweet tea and it was very good. This sweet tea was good enough to convince me to come back but brewing can be different every time so I'm hoping they make really good sweet tea here and it wasn't just a one time "fluke." My boyfriend had the strawberry watermelon tea and it was good too but tasted a bit too artificial. We wanted to try out the mango strawberry tea and a couple more but our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. If you haven't noticed by now I am a sucker for great drinks. They had a tablet on the table that we paid through (I especially liked that, less risk of cc fraud) but if you have kids there are also many activities on it that they may like. It took my kids 2 times to get the hang of it and find what they like, but after that, its all history..they ask for this place all the time. Now, the bad..theres no devider to keep smoking from non smoking, the service is usually really slow, and you finish eating before you get your refill on your drink..if you get the all you can eat, you will probably have to get up and go find your own bowl, which is not out for you to get, you gotta find your server, who is probably running around, or you gotta stop a random server and ask them for a bowl to get seconds. So this is not my first rodeo at this place. I love the fact that I can pick and chose what I want in my bowel. The restaurant is clean and the workers are friendly. I always get take out since it's always just me. It didn't take them a long time to cook my food which was a plus..... I must say that I was a bit pissed when walking in and 4 Caucasian people walked in behind me was acknowledged before me. I was at the front of the counter the young girl walked up to the group behind me and offered help and completely ignored me. That really didn't set too well with me...mainly because she saw us all as we walked in as I came in first and them behind me. I don't know if it was truly an accident on her part but I just wished that could have been handled differently. So unfortunately, that put a horrible taste in my mouth. I like being able to build my own meal, though it can be a bit overwhelming at times. The buffet setup of raw food seems daunting, but you get the hang of it eventually. Try out some of the suggested recipes if you simply cannot decide. Most everything appears to be fresh and you can sample the sauces before committing to using one. You also get your choice between tortillas, rice, noodles, etc., so choose wisely. The array of spices is good to add a little zing to your meal. Their restaurant-specific drinks are decent, though tend to be a little sugary for my tastes. One of the things that bothers me most is the consistently poor service. Getting refills takes forever and, if its busy, you can forget about asking for anything except your check. The ringing of the gong gets on my nerves, too. This location has a smoking section in the bar, but no real divider between it and the non-smoking section. One of the things that immediately struck me about this place is the variety of ingredients that they offer. For one half of the contents of my husbands & my bowl are burnt ... which kind of sucks since we paid 30$ & did take out! When I walked in the hostess was looking down at her cell phone for what seemed like a few minutes. I told her we had five adults and a high chair and she motioned me to a table that sat four. When I reiterated we had five plus a high chair she stared at me blankly until I requested we push two tables together. She said that would be fine and watched me push the two together. After my party arrived and was seated some high school kid pretending to be the manager told us that although they had no other seating to accommodate us, the current arrangement was against fire code. I work in the restaurant industry and happen to know fire code for Dallas, Addison, and Plano, and we were not in violation. YAY Genghis! I've been coming to Genghis (many locations, but this one most frequently) for almost 8 years now. And I've never once had bad food. Mostly that's because you get to pick what goes in your bowl! I will be honest here: all of the raw meat on their bowl-building line seriously freaks me out. Doesn't mean I won't often get steak, but it still freaks me out. If you've got a raw-meat thing like me, then close your eyes for a couple of steps til you hit the veggies. The veggie selection is always great. Last night, the mushrooms (my fav) were especially large and generously sliced. This is the BEST. If they're smaller or thinly sliced, they're still delicious, it just doesn't give you that meaty texture. They also have tofu. mmm delicious. They have tomatoes, jalapenos, cilantro, chives, zucchini/squash, broccoli, snap peas, green beans, eggs (yes, raw eggs that they break into your food when cooking-- same texture and style as fried rice), potatoes, mini-corns, and more veggies! They have an array of meats, too: beef, steak, sausage, chicken, turkey, pork, scallops, "khan's krab", and probably more (but I try not to look because I'm weird). Then they have all of the sauces! There are little taster spoons so you can taste a bit of a sauce before you ladle it into the little side bowl for them to add to your food while grilling. If you're not a huge sauce fan, they also have garlic water (which is just minced garlic- stir it- and water) that way you can add some garlic flavor without salty sauce. At the very end of the bowl-building line, they have an array of spices and seasonings. Tread carefully! You may think that a spoonful on your bowl won't be too much, but it might be. When you get to the giant open grill, they ask you what kind of starch you'd like. These have seriously expanded in the past few years! White rice, brown rice, fried rice, udon noodles, spiral pasta... pick whichever you like! You can also get tortillas on the side. Pro-Tip: After handing your bowl off to the grill master, grab a moist towlette from the little bucket. Seriously, think of all those nasty raw meat touching tongs and hands that have been all over that bar. Wipe your hands off. Really. Last night, we tried their Lychee Ice Cream. HOLY CRAP. It was amazing. Mild flavor, which is awesome, and then surprise! Big ol chunks of lychee fruits in the ice cream. So delicious! I don't know if this is a seasonal ice cream flavor or not, but if they have it, I seriously seriously recommend it. This place is customizable to your every liking! Don't like meat? Stick with veggies and tofu! Don't like veggies? (weirdo!) Stick with the various meat and starch options! Full bar, signature drinks, delicious lychee ice cream (the rest of the desserts leave something to be desired), and always prompt refills of beverages. There IS discount for getting just one bowl. If you want unlimited, endless bowls, you pay a few bucks more, but it's still a pretty damn good deal seeing how much you can shove into one bowl and how full you can get there. Genghis is basically a create your own "stir fry" restaurant. They have a buffet of meats (beef, chicken, turkey sausage, cod, shrimp, etc), vegetables (carrots, peppers, broccoli, onion, baby corn, etc), seasonings, and sauces to make up your meal. You then take your order to the chefs who will cook it on a round grill and add your choice of starch (pasta, tortilla, rice, etc..) There are cards with some suggested combinations if you're not sure what you want to make. There is wait staff there to take your drink order, dessert order, and handle your bill. The bill with drink and tip will be around $12 - $15. You have the option of one bowl or unlimited bowls for a few dollars extra. However, during lunch time it may be difficult to get through the line more than once without being late going back to work. read more

I'm a fan of the concept of Genghis Grills, visiting this location or another on a number of occasions. We were seated by the hostess and she asked us if we'd been to a Genghis before, which if it is your first time it is very helpful if at least one person in your group listens. Then she asked if we wanted any appetizers, I did. Someone needs to tell her not to phrase it like she is taking an order because she wasn't. Telling me that if I tell the waitress, she would put the order in for me........ There were people just milling around the restaurant looking for service, making a awkward dining experience. The food bar was well stocked except they were out of my favorite add in, bean sprouts I usually put in a ton too. If you have never been to a Genghis, take note that you will do a little more work then a traditional restaurant. So be prepared to start your dining experience somewhat like a buffet, without the immediate reward of food when you return to your seat. If you are not good at selecting ingredients, they do have suggestion recipes/combinations which can aid you. If you follow a predefined concoction make sure you to go heavier on the items you like the most. Don't forget to mark off your starch. Udon noodles are the way to go but, the fired rice is good too. read more

I'm here on a busy Saturday night and the restaurant is pretty full. There's only 2 waitresses and the bartender working. The bartender told us there was open seating and left us to wander without giving us menus or notifying a waitress about our arrival which had us waiting for 10 minutes until our waitress noticed us. Our waitress apologized and she was really nice. I could tell she was busy, so I know she did the best she could. Also, a lot of the containers were empty when I was prepping my bowl and I missed out on a lot of stuff. While my experience wasn't horrible, I do hope management steps it up and understaffing isn't an issue going forward. read more

This was my first time at a Genghis Grill and I was favorably impressed with the concept, food choices, and cooking. There were an amazing variety of meats, vegetables, spices, and sauces. There is a full bar, ample television sets, and decent seating. Where I thought things were deficient were with the service. First, they only bring one menu for the entire party - with the number of appetizers, drinks, etc that are offered, that was not acceptable to us. We were seated next to an uncleaned table, which wasn't bussed for more than 20 minutes - and the place was not that busy. Other tables were also left messy for considerable periods of time. Finally, although personable and knowledgeable, he was quite inattentive. There were delays in refilling drinks, checking on our food, and I had to get up and find him to get a new bowl for a second serving. Did a group order on mobile and my meal was forgotten, thankfully the person who picked it up reviewed the receipt before they left.
