Mind you this isn't the fanciest known restaurant but it reminded me a lot of hibachi box up in Richmond. I liked that I got to make my own bowl and put as much as I could. They said stack it as much as you can and I did. Left overs were just as good too. For those who had a bad experience I'm sure it wasn't intended yet even though we're 2+ years into our pandemic, the staff was young and we tried to be as simple as possible. Me and my husband were on a search for a place that serves low carb food. We looked at yelp and saw this Mongolian place. We got there and was greeted by nice servers who explained to us how to do it. So, basically, they make you choose what bowl size you want first and then you can stuff it with any choice of meat and veggies you like and then you get to pick a sauce on the side. I noticed that most of the negative reviews here are critical of the PROCESS at Genghis Grill, not the FOOD. So let's separate them. My wife and I saw the restaurant as we drove past a number of times, so we decided to try it. And we're glad we did -- it was terrific. The place was clean, not too loud (we've got a 10 year old who hates loud places and he was A-OK), and the staff was wonderful. Yes, the process is a bit odd for first-time visitors. Essentially, you're given two bowls -- a large one for food and a small one for sauce. Then you go to the salad bar-esque setup and fill your bowl with whatever means, veggies, and other stuff you like. (There are spices and sauces too, arranged by 'temperature.') Once you're done with that, you choose a starch (e.g., noodles, rice) and give the bowl to the guys at the grill who cook it up. Your waiter delivers it. Simple. Well... not completely. We had a great waitress (Hannah) explain it to us. See, you get a guide when you sit down that's supposed to help you choose your food ahead of time -- it has recipes that are known to work well. But that process isn't clear, and most people will simply opt for "Let me load my bowl with stuff I like," which works well. So minus one star for the unclear process. (Note to Genghis folks: I can show you how to make it work perfectly, if you like.) The bowls LOOK small, but I loaded mine up (at the suggestion of the manager) and it made quite a large meal. My wife had more veggies, and those tend to shrink on cooking, but she still had a bunch left over. So portion size is fine. The food was very good. It was cooked perfectly, and any fault with the flavors is my own. If I was worried I would use the guides to create one of the 'suggested' meals. Now that we've been there, we understand the process. It's just not that hard. We'll definitely be going back! Coupla notes: Tell your waiter that you haven't been before. (That was the first thing ours asked.) Then you'll get a personal tour of the process. The seating is good for groups of up to four or six, but I don't know if it would be as good for a large crowd. Well this was different! I went here on a lunch date with my guy the other day. We always like to try new places and I was glad that he obliged when I suggested Ghengis Grill. We both really liked the idea of customizing our dishes and contrary to what other reviewers are saying, our waiter did thoroughly explain how the whole process worked. We had already been warned beforehand to pack our bowls to the brim, so we didn't have any issues with there not being enough food after it was cooked. I was a little sad to see that they only serve scallops at dinner time, but I regrouped and got chicken and pork instead. I chose garlic, garlic salt, pepper, lemon pepper, and cilantro as my seasonings; added mushrooms and typical hibachi vegetables, and sealed the deal with fried rice. (Sidenote: We ordered potstickers as an appetizer but the waiter failed to ever bring them. Star deducted) When they brought the food out it immediately smelled delicious and I was so happy that it tasted equally as good! She came to the table without introducing herself and asked have you been here before? I'm a huge fan of BD's Mongolian Grill, but they don't have any in Virginia, so i was eager to try out the newly opened Genghis Grill in Short Pump. Wendy and I took the kids out for a special treat one night. For those not into Mongolian, you get a bowl and go to a buffet where you select from a range of meats, veggies, and other stuff, and then pick a sauce. You then take it to the grill, where they will cook it up and add your starch (rice, noodles, etc.) It was a nice try, but it was not as good as it could have been. First off, part of the issues they had were due to just being new and not quite having all the kinks out of their processes yet. The food was pretty good, but it would take some time to figure out what all their sauces will taste like once cooked. They don't add the sauces until the latter stage of cooking, unlike BD's, so you don't get quite the tasty carmelization I am used to. That's forgivable, but here are my other gripes. High pricing. At BD's, the standard is the all you can eat bowl, so you are encouraged to try something new and give it a whirl. At GG, the standard price is for one bowl - they say you can upgrade to endless, but it was nowhere on the menu I could find. This encourages the opposite behavior - be safe you don't make something inedible. The single bowl price was pretty high, so I can't guess at where their refill price is at. Not for kids. The kids meal price was $5.99. That's pretty outrageous for folks with small kids. Poor atmosphere. Part of the fun of Mongolian is the social experience of everyone up at the Grill watching them cook the food. It's like a stadium around the grill. Great concept. At Genghis, you go back and sit at the table and they bring it out to you. You can sit and wait for it, but you're likely standing there alone. I will probably visit again, because I enjoy Mongolian, but it could have been better. read more

I think this style of restaurant has had a hard time finding its niche, and for good reason. The process is a bit confusing for some, potentially overwhelming and frightening for others. The food can be hit or miss, but that is usually the patron's fault for mixing sauces with spices that shouldn't be together in the same room. What can save this business is the enthusiasm of the staff, and this place had a good, helpful, patient staff that made our process a bit easier. The menu perplexed me, as isn't this place a make-your-own? Finally, the "staging area" for food production was impressive, but I didn't like the sauce testing and tasting policy or procedures, I mean, who is keeping their kids from double dipping around here? All of these things aside, the food was fun and decent, and they seem very ready to take on food allergies and other challenges that customers may face. This is the type of place that is more about the total experience as much as the food, and although the food was good, the experience needs a bit of fine-tuning, I mean do we wait around to be entertained by the grill-staff (who looked to earn tips by having an audience I am assuming) or do we head back to the seats? Do we order from the pre-made suggestion cards, or do we throw caution to the wind and hope dragon salt goes with papaya-salsa? These and many other questions remain to be answered, and I think a return visit is in order just to see if they have truly gotten their game on. I am willing to wait and see if it truly becomes an experience that satisfies taste buds and temperament. For now, the jury is still out. read more

Customers on next table asked for delay to manger as they are not addressed at least did not give the menu card as it its been 15 mins, when customer asked he talked rudely saying Doors were open if you want to leave. It's fun being able to put your own ingredients into your bowel and then have it cooked up for you. I will say I do get concerns with cross contamination sometimes with raw chicken being out (obviously cold) with other raw meats around it. I'll definitely be coming back here and the waitress/ server we had were extremely friendly and funny. I didn't know much about how to order their food so the waitress helped me out. The food was very good for its price and I loved the smell of everything. I've never been to a restaurant like this and loved the idea of it. Only problem was when I was up at the place where you stack your bowl with food, there was nobody there. For some of the meats it wasn't labeled and I had to ask other customers who've been there many times what it was (like there was no glass or label above the meat area). This is one of my absolute favorite dinner spots!! Every time I go, I make sure I mix it up a little bit just so I don't get bored. (I usually take one trip every 2 weeks or so with a couple of friends.) First thing, if you enjoy you meal, make sure you ask for a Genghis Card! That way you can get rewards points every time you visit and save up for free perks! Secondly, if you're a fan of having leftovers, definitely consider the Large bowl! (Three sizes: Small, Regular and Large) A few small things that a lot of people don't realize when they order: 1) Depending on the bowl size you get, you will be able to get 1-3 sides to go with it. If you get a Small bowl, you can choose one side (i.e. Rice). A Regular bowl= 2 sides and a Large bowl= 3. You can also ask for an Egg (free of charge, also doesn't count as a side) when they ask what you want in your bowl at the counter. 2) As with the sides, you can get multiple sauce "bowls" depending on the size of the bowl you get. 3) If you waiter/waitress doesn't offer when you receive your food, you can ask them to bring you Sriracha or Yum Yum Sauce (Absolutely amazing! If you don't know what it is, definitely ask for them to bring you some!!) When it comes to building your actual bowl, definitely do as the others say and fill the bowl up as much as you can! You generally have a huge choice of meats (Pork/Poultry/Seafood) followed by your choice of 10 or so different spices. The vegetables are last which really help you realize if you left enough saved enough space after your meat selection. You can choose between a massive variety of things ranging from onions, carrots, tomatoes, pineapples, peppers, jalapenos and so much more! (Please note: Occasionally they switch up when they offer, so don't be surprised if you go in one day to find out they don't offer something you got previously.) 5 stars when flavors exceed my expectations, AND service is on top! Ralph greated & seated and made us first-timers welcome. With drinks & app order placed, Ralph took us through the build your meal process as if we were his only table. The shiracha chicken immediately caught our attention and you couldn't hold us back. We love to cook ourselves, so having 70 plus ingredients to put together was great fun. I thought I was cleaverly building my bowel with broccoli side extenders , but there are some real experts that confirmed I am a rooky. Next time get behind a soilder, they'll show you how you pack a bowl :) At the end of the line, pick your sauce. I added 3 laddles of the 3G sauce. DELISH! But watch that calorie load. Now I've always liked seeing the kitchen staff work (that's what I liked about Hooters before the redecorating). So I want to thank Ralph & grill staff for making this a fun experience. Ps. Great food! Good for lunch -- the prices are much cheaper at lunch. They also send out a lot of coupons in the mail, especially if you sign up for their customer program. Ok, we've eaten here several times and always left pleased... Until today. The food tonight was just as good, staff were pleasant, restaurant was clean. But what on earth happened to their prices?!? The meal we had was not a $25-a-plate affair, but somehow that's what we paid. No alcohol or desserts. Just two bowls and an edamame appetizer = fifty big ones. Oh, and they've added these little tablet screens to each table so you can order drinks, appetizers, desserts, and also pay your bill. But you still must interact with the same number of people in order to get your meal. It's just a distraction - especially if you have kids at the table. The concept is similar to a hibachi restaurant but in this one you pick the ingridients from a line including raw meat,spices,vegies and sauces.if you know how to cook you will be able to combine all the ingridients to made a good tasting bowl,if you dont know how to cook and add spices that should not go with the other ingridients it will be not good.There are not suggestions on what to combine with what so you are on your own. I am a good cooker and I also know a little about regulations for restaurants and I think there is a lot of chance here to get cross contaminared food. I saw a guy next to me who got sauce on his hand cleaned leaking it and the with the same hand hold a spoon to serve another sauce.I saw a lady that picked up raw shirmp and used the same utencil to pick fish from another bowl . I have eaten at this Genghis Grill many, many times. They have a very wide selection of ingredients available, including multiple types of chicken, beef and pork, turkey, fish, sausage, scallops, etc. Shrimp used to be available, but are apparently temporarily off the menu due to market pricing. Beyond proteins, they have several different spices, in all kinds of flavors. After the spices, you get to a very large section of veggies. They have a LOT of them available. They have many, many individual veggies to choose from, as well as a number of pre-mixed offerings. After you have selected your veggies, you move on to the sauces. Again, there are many to choose from. Everything from mild and sweet to spicy! Oce you have selected all of your ingredients, you pick a starch, and hand your bowl off to the grill masters for them to cook it all up for you. The food is overall very good. I've had a few bowls that were cooked a little more than I would have liked, but that's rare. Good selection of drinks (sodas, specialty drinks, beer, wine and a full bar). The atmosphere is nice. The place is clean, and unless it's absolutely packed, it's not too loud. Music is typically 90s fare, and a nice change from other places. The staff is AWESOME! The servers are attentive and friendly, and the managers are friendly and always checking to make sure everything is ok, and their customers are happy. I really like that they are sensitive to people with food allergies. That being said, on a number of occasions, both my son and wife (who both have serious allergies) have found ingredients in their bowls that they did not add. Obviously, they hopped over from a neighboring bowl during cooking. They need to improve this process. Pricing is reasonable, but a LITTLE high, in my opinion. The rewards card does help here though. Overall, I enjoy eating at Genghis Grill quite a lot, and will continue to go regularly. read more

The cleanliness of the place, especially where the raw meats are kept is disgusting... especially in time of covid, please clean more... meat just left out rotting, surfaces not wiped, I question if the meat was even kept to cold temperatures as it should be.. my stomach has been messed up since, luckily not food poisoning! For my brothers birthday we decided to go here, the service was outstanding and there were six of us so it was a handful. But the food was outstanding it was a little salty but that was because of my decision, you make your own food and they cook it, but really the sweet tea came out a little flat it just wasn't doing it for me. The money you pay for portions are not worth the portion servings. The bathroom was disgusting, and was an indication of how the buffet bar looked and was maintained. Raw meats were not frozen and meat juice was getting mixed with different meats. The handles were getting meat juice on them and then you touch other handles and you cross contaminate. The sauces were spilled all over the place. The food took forever to get back once we turned in the plate and it came back with the vegetables under cooked.
