Excellent! My wife and I hadn't been to the Genghis Khan Mongolian Grill in a long time, and decided to head there for a late lunch. We were welcomed there by (who turned out to be the new owner)...a very gracious and welcoming young woman, who showed us to our table. We hadn't been to the restaurant in quite a while, so she explained the menu to us and offered suggestions to accommodate some things we had in mind and being very patient! We had a wonderful time and the food and variety offered was excellent! Plentiful, fresh and extremely well prepared on the hot stone! By the way, the fellow preparing our dishes on the stone, was very helpful, explaining how to navigate the ingredients (your choice's) and the variety of sauces used in the preparation. This use to be one of my favorite places to eat, especially when I lived in the area. I was come here 2-3 times out of the week. I'm glad to see they are back open now, I randomly came here a few summers ago and they were closed. This is by far the best Mongolian grill, I've been to in the Kansas City area. They have three different bbq options to choose from. A great amount of meats , veggies, spices and sauces to choose from. I will definitely be returning often now that I know they're back open. The actual quality of the food at Ganges Kahn Restaurant is, frankly, excellent. Every bite I managed to get was flavorful and well-prepared. If you are strictly looking for a meal that hits the mark on taste, the person in the kitchen clearly knows what they are doing. Unfortunately, the dining experience was severely hampered by an extreme lack of staffing. On the day of my visit, there was only one waitress to handle a room of approximately 40 guests. While she was doing her best, it is simply impossible for one person to provide attentive service to a crowd that size. The staffing issues extended beyond the front of house. The Hors d'Oeuvre Bar was empty roughly 90% of the time. It's hard to enjoy a buffet-style feature when there is nothing to plate. I never actually received my soup. I was informed that there were no cooks available to prepare it at the time, which is a significant disappointment for any seated dinner. read more

I was sad when I heard Genghis Khan was closing. It was a neighborhood institution - one of those places that you thought would last forever... . And now it might. A group of former employers ended up buying the place, fixing it up and bringing back the locally famous buffet line. The all you can eat and single trip options are still available. The mega meat, seafood and veggie options are, too. I wish the bowls were a little larger. I also wish there were more sauce options. We came here on a rainy evening during the weekend and the place was packed. We had been several years prior when it was located in the north land and really enjoyed it. We decided to try out the downtown location. The pricing was good. However, the service was a little weird. We may try to come back again and see if having a different waiter changes the experience. We felt very strange asking for appetizers and dessert because we were told there was none even though the table next to us was brought out a plate with one for each person. I'm a Ghengis Grill fan from years going to the Dallas location, and now in KC, MO we've had a nice reunion! My wife, her parents, and I had a great early dinner. We all had the "All You Can Eat" choice. It brought back fine memories and good food! Without going I to great detail about the generous meat, spices, vegetables, and other choices, I'll just say the food didn't disappoint!! My only criticisms from a decade ago are that the spices weren't as easily accessed or tasty, and the two eggs I had them add in with my noodle choice (can also add rice, if you prefer) was that the eggs were just added into the mix that is prepared right in front of you weren't evident in my finished bowl. Minor things but my comparisons to years ago! Great meal! read more

Even a couple of things, I don't quite know what it is - but I bet any vegetarian would know. Oh but wait - (us) meat protein and seafood eaters - they have plenty to choose from too! - Marinading sauces - Here you go and another real separator to this place - they've got so many options to choose from. And these sauces - they are such full flavored sauces. (Not) that watered down and stretch it out kind of crap. These...are real deal Flavor-o-Rama! - What - All You Can Eat? Best Mongolian BBQ! Got the chicken and pork BBQ (all you can eat buffet) for $23.50 which came w/ apps (crab Rangoon and spring rolls), soup, and dessert. It was pretty quiet and empty when I went at 6:45, and the inside of the restaurant is very warm but part of the grill experience. I got put off this place a few years ago (2019?) after being charged for the "all you can eat" when I did the "one trip." The waitress accused me of eating a crab rangoon off my husband's plate, the owner backed her up... it was a whole thing. And we never went back. Anyway, fast forward to last week. We heard the restaurant had reopened, new ownership... and thought it might be worth giving another shot. Visually, everything was exactly the same. And ironically, I think we were served by the exact same awful waitress that we were served by the last time we were there. She's still just as unfriendly, abrupt and condescending as I had remembered her being. I wanted to do the "mini bowl," but was curtly informed that it isn't available on the weekend, so I begrudgingly did the all you can eat. The buffet is astronomically more expensive than it used to be, and the new pricing structure is so complicated that I felt like I needed a lawyer present. It's going to sound like I'm nitpicking, but it just wasn't great. They don't have wings on the buffet anymore, which was a huge disappointment. The soup was salty sludge and inedible, the appetizers were picked over and basically nothing but crumbs, the vegetables looked like they'd been sitting on the buffet for several days, sauce and pieces of food were strewn all over the buffet and surrounding floor... After my food had been grilled, the cook unceremoniously slopped my food onto a plate and handed it to me with noodles trailing off the plate. None of the dirty dishes were removed from the table by the waitress. And don't even get me started on the disgusting bathroom curtains. We got full. That's about the only positive thing I can say about the experience. For a lunch that ended up costing nearly $40 a person, I expected a cleaner establishment, fresher food, much better service and some pretense of presentation. There is something so sensory pleasing to watch your food being prepared in front of your very eyes after your very preferences tailored the ingredients to match your individual tastebuds. I've always frequented the Asian Mongolian grill concept restaurants rather it be in Columbia MO at the approachable chain HuHut or the holy grail (and extremely local) Genghis Khan located in KC's vibrant west 39th street district, and between you and me there really isn't a comparison. Genghis Khan exudes a family owned traditional mentality while still being extremely well received to milder Midwestern pallets because, it is such an immersive hands on dining experience, completely customizable. Now, Genghis Khan does offer a made to order full menu but I can not attest to the quality of these dishes. However, the Mongolian Grill is where Genghis conquers all. The selection of fresh garden vegetables, eclectic choices like water chestnuts and pineapple as well as the variety of perfectly preserved meat such as pork, chicken, shrimp, crab and more alongside a vast selection of many different noodles some even gluten free makes this the ultimate smorgasbord! And not to mention the free add on buffet of crispy rangoon and saucy wings with tiny bite sized desserts. Also, if the Mongolian grill is not your preferred method of placing your order there is also an extensive menu to peruse and choose from. read more

It was great. The mini bowl was perfect for our needs. The wait staff was very kind if over worked. Lots of big parties in at the time.

First the pros.... The food tasted good; you can season it to your liking (what we love about MBBQ) from mild to spicy. The soups were good, and the spring rolls and crab rangoon were cooked fresh and came out piping hot every time we asked for more. The service from the waitress was great; she kept our glasses filled and brought fresh spring rolls and crab rangoon throughout the meal. Now the cons... The deserts, while tasty, were meager. A single tray of brownies and lemon bars cut in 1" cubes. Not what I expected from reading "desert bar" on the menu. We were craving Mongolian BBQ, and we thought we would try Genghis Khan after looking at their web site. The food looked good, and the price was reasonable ($14.50 for all you can eat BBQ, non-seafood). We drove ~40 minutes to get here, and were handed the menu along with a SECOND menu with prices that were ~40% higher ($20.5 vs $14.5 for the meals we were ordering). I asked what the difference was on the 2 menu items and was told, "they're the same, this is the new price since COVID..." Are ingredient prices really up 40%? I've seen price increases at other restaurants the last couple of years, but not nearly this high. And why not update the regular menu or your website? Why hand out laminated "price increase" menus alongside them? It's been ~2 years since things opened back up post-COVID; it's not like this is a new thing..... Well, already drove 40 min and are here, so it is what it is and we agree to the $6/pp upcharge and order 2 Beef, Chicken, and Pork BBQ meals. The entire time my son was worried about leaving morsels of food because of the excess waste charges at the top of this new price list. I had to keep reassuring him this was so you don't take an entire plate of something and not eat it (hoping the whole time that was true, but never knowing for sure until the bill came). When the bill came, they charged us $24 each for "Seafood BBQ". I told the waitress we didn't have seafood and she said, "but you had sausage?" Yes, we each had about 6-8 slices of sausage along with the beef and pork. "Yeah, they moved the sausage to the seafood price about 3 weeks ago...." we were told. I was flabbergasted. Sausage isn't seafood and there was NO signage to that effect at the buffet. They refused to do anything because it's printed on the new price sheet they gave us with the menu (yes, I see "Seafood, Meat and Sausage" now that they brought it back out to show me again after I argued about the bill. But it was confusing and had we known that the sausage was going to cost $4 more, we'd have either passed, or chosen the seafood instead - we basically paid $8 for the equivalent of 1 sausage link (or less). There is absolutely NO signage at the food stations where you build your bowl, so other than the "seafood" vs "non seafood" or "chicken only" designations we remembered from the menu, we were unaware of the up-charge. I'm a bit miffed about the "bait and switch" pricing and lack of signage/communication on the meats. I read at other reviews, and it looks like I'm not the first one this has happened to, so I'm assuming it's just part of the business model to prey on patrons confusion and spring last minute up-charges on people. There should be a clear delineation of the meats, or signs at the buffet to reinforce this. I ordered "beef, chicken and pork" and assumed that included sausage, not that the sausage is lumped in with seafood. Sausage is junk meat - it's NOT something I'd expect an up-charge on like shrimp, squid, or shellfish. read more

My server Naomi came over...very pleasant attitude, I informed her that this was my first visit and she explained to me what I inquired about. The food was good...it was actually fun picking and choosing the items, the portions as well as creating my sauce. The food area was clean..food was fresh. We have not been here since the pandemic began, since we have avoided buffets during the pandemic, but we decided to return to order from the menu. While this restaurant is best known for its Mongolian Barbeque, we now view this restaurant as an outstanding full service Asian (mostly Chinese) restaurant. Since we are pescatarians and also avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates, we prefer restaurants that will alter their preparations for us, if necessary. That was not a problem here. We got the "Portabella with Fresh Jalapeno and Basil Chili Pepper Sauce" and the "Tofu in Chef's Hot Pepper Sauce."  We had them prepared without chicken stock or sugar.  Both were excellent, but surprisingly mild. Perhaps they might have been more spicy, if the sauce had not been altered to our preference.  We then requested hot chili oil to add. That fixed the problem.  Instead of rice (they do not have brown rice), we got soybean noodles.  The thin soybean noodles, made to order, were outstanding.  We also got vegetarian egg rolls.  One was included with the Portabella entree but a small upcharge with the tofu entree.  They were good but deep fried. Next time, we might skip them. We also got a Martini and a Cognac. We will be back for sure, not for the Mongolian BBQ, but to order from the surprisingly large menu. read more

Worst birthday dinner ever.... First I would like to say the food and the people we first encountered upon our arrival was helpful and welcoming. And I would like to say thank you to them, including the family owners. Our issue began when we were seated and me, my kid and my sister sat there for over 30min before someone actually came over and acknowledged we have been sitting for over while. Mind you when I ask this waiter who our actual waiter was supposed to be he was not our waiter but he was wanted to provide assistance due to seeing us sitting and waiting for so long. By that time our so called waiter (a guy that had been running back and forth and never even came to acknowledge us no point whatsoever), and our so called waiter is all like "oh yes I'm your waiter" after the fact someone else came to acknowledge us sitting for so long. At that moment when another waiter came over and acknowledged us sitting and waiting for so long "Our" waiter came running over saying yes how may I help you. After he done completely ignored us for 30min plus... We had to wait for food for over 30min plus, some food we ordered never came out, we had to repeatedly ask about things that were originally ordered. And when we asked about it it was oh their working on it... but he never took the initiative to confirm or communicate that to us at no point. My son sat there for over an hour waiting on food he never got, it came out boxed up as if we ordered it to go... smh it was a mess... the waiter originally confirmed that with as well saying "it was a shit show" on how things were going but we were there for 2 1/2 hours while other people came and went with no issue. And after all of that we got 20 percent off and our "so called waiter" Dylan cussing at us for a horrible experience we were trying to convey to the owner that barely understood the issue at hand and allowed for her so called waiter to be disrespectful to paying customers. I am so surprised that I have never written review for this place. I have been going for about 12 years at this point. It is our all time favorite place. I tell people about it constantly when they mention Mongolian grills and I tell them that they have never experienced anything if they've never been to Genghis. I love trying new places, but the heart wants what the heart wants sometimes lol. I've honestly never ordered anything from the menu but I'm sure it's all amazing. If you go for lunch there is always egg drop soup out with wontons and crab rangoons. There's also some other things like a different type of soup, wings as well as some desserts. But the grill! That's where it's at. Make your own creation with fresh veggies, add whatever noodles you want, and all of the types of sauces/seasonings you want on it. The guy takes it at the grill, cooks it up and then you're set. It's all you can eat, so even if for some crazy reason you don't like what you made or want to try a new creation, you can make more! I am generally make my 1st bowl so big and full of stuff I can never go back and get more! And I've also had soup and rangoons too. I've never left here dissatisfied! The service is always great, everyone is super friendly! The interior of Genghis and how it's decorated really pays homage to the name of the restaurant. read more

I was a big fan of the first generation 39th street eatery. Whatever became of it has been long forgotten & what's left is a poorly maintained Chinese buffet with questionable freshness & you have to cook your own shit. The non-Mongolian guy who cooks the food on the grill here goes into the men's room in between customers and argues on his cellphone in Hindi.... It's only inconvenient if you need a number 2. The cost was laughable & the quality was a few steps beneath Panda Express. Take a pass on this place if you get a chance. Plenty of other restaurants on 39th St., that are far better. read more

What a delightful experience! Our waiter Drew was fabulous. The options were plentiful and food delicious. I especially appreciated all of the GF and vegetarian options. Thank you for that to the owners. The restaurant was super clean, open, and bright. The atmosphere was fun! I was in the area on a Saturday night when I found myself searching for a bite to eat. It was recommended that I try this hidden place, tucked away on a smaller back street. I walked in and was greeted and quickly seated afterwards. The place has a nice vibe to it, and the smells are amazing due to the stovetop grill being in the front area. I decided to try the Stir Fry and the Sweet Potato Fries. Both were great choices and satisfied my empty stomach. Overall I enjoyed my experience and will be returning ! read more

Checked out Genghis Khan today for lunch. Having only ever experienced large, chain Mongolian grill spots, I wasn't sure what to expect. We were seated quickly and our server came to get our drinks. As we both ordered the Mongolian BBQ, she told us we could get started whenever we wanted. There is a buffet of veggies, one of meats, and one of sauces. I went heavy on the veggies and meat, and light on the noodles so I could eat more. Along with the bbq, comes soup, some appetizers like crab Rangoon and wings, and a basic dessert. My favorite part was the bbq, hands down. I highly recommend following their sauce recommendations- yum! We also order both types of infused soju, just for fun. We both preferred the cranberry-cucumber. This was a fun stop for a unique meal! read more

A++ for service. In true Kansas City style, we went right after the tornado passed the area and even though they had sent a lot of people home, the woman working did a phenomenal job of making sure we had everything we needed. We didn't wait long for drinks or appetizers. We had crab Rangoon and it was DELICIOUS. Just the right amount of crunchy and the sweet and sour sauce was warm and delicious. It's easy to go wrong with build your own, but they had sauce recipes that were easy to follow. I like this place better than BDs because it's not just one line, you can move around the different sections (veggies, meats, sauces) as you decide. The same nice woman was helping a family figure out their sauces and I thought that was a nice touch. There looked to be a lot of bar options and the interior of the restaurant was classy with an Asian theme. Definitely a family friendly place. Oh the guy cooking the food was incredibly nice also. Chalk Genghis Khan up as one of those spots that I forget about but enjoy every time I visit. It's a sister restaurant to Blue Koi around the corner and makes a good backup option if Blue Koi is packed. So confessions of a CM here: I used to be the world's pickiest eater. I didn't eat anything green, I didn't eat any condiments but ketchup, and I wasn't about to change. Slowly, thank god, that mindset began to shift, but not without a gentle nudge from my 9th grade social studies class. One of our end-of-the-year assignments was to try an ethnic restaurant and write a report on it.. Pretty much Yelp a place for high school credit. My friend and I got tasked with Genghis Khan and were both beyond reluctant to try it. Once we discovered their massive Mongolian grill style buffet, we were blown away. The food here was legit, fresh and slightly different from the norm. Many years later, I still feel the same way and love playing around with their sauces to make something good. Oyster sauce and sesame oil? Don't mind if I do. Sriracha? Always. My trick at this spot is to experiment like crazy and to limit the noodles and instead have veggies and meat. This allows me to handle a bit more food and seems somewhat healthier. Aside from the grill part, and the hypnotic gazing as the chefs prep your masterpiece, you also get crab rangoons, egg rolls and a desert bar. I think all told it was $13.50 per person if you don't get the seafood in your creations. This is the kind of place I don't go often, maybe once or twice a year, but it's always good and it's always up to you to make it good based on your own stir-fry creativity. read more

I've been to this place a couple of times and now I think it's time to review it. If you are looking for all you can eat Mongolian grill, this is the place to go. It's higher quality than the buffet Mongolian grill that most Chinese buffets have but it's also a bit more expensive. This place isn't a typical Chinese buffet because there is no all you can eat orange chicken, fried race, etc. It's basically AYCE Mongolian stir fry, crab Rangoon, and chicken wings. If you want however, you can go for a dish made to order off their menu. It's separate from the buffet however. Food is great for an AYCE place. The crab rangoons are delicious. They are the best buffet style rangoons I have ever had. The Mongolian grill has a good selection of raw meat, seafood, and vegetables as well sauces. The waiters are really nice too. Be aware that you do get charged more if you add seafood to your plate. They observe your plate after they clean up and make that determination. They also might just ask if unsure. read more
