The first course was oysters; while their freshness was adequate, they lacked the pure, sweet quality that diners often eagerly seek, instead carrying a faint--though not severe--fishy undertone. The Amberjack offered a delightful texture--both moist and smooth--standing out as one of the most memorable dishes of the entire meal. However, the dishes served during the middle portion of the meal were, on the whole, rather mediocre and conventional, lacking any significant highlights. Several dishes, in particular, revealed some rather obvious flaws. The quality of the salmon itself was mediocre; neither its fat content nor its flavor profile could be described as particularly outstanding. Furthermore, one piece of scallop sushi--as well as another sushi piece--was seasoned in a style resembling "salt and pepper"; however, the salt was applied too heavily, completely overpowering the natural flavors of the ingredients and resulting in an overly salty taste. The shrimp sushi itself was actually quite good, exuding a pleasant, natural sweetness; however, the addition of yuzu zest--which may have been grated too deeply, inadvertently including the bitter white pith--introduced a hint of bitterness that ultimately detracted from the overall dining experience. It might have been better left unadorned. Another factor that negatively impacted the dining experience was the sushi rice itself; the rice mounds were generally packed too loosely, causing them to fall apart with ease when picked up. The service regarding the presentation of the dishes also appeared somewhat casual and careless; on several occasions, the sushi was placed at a distance from the diner, forcing me to lean across the counter to retrieve it. Such lapses in service etiquette constitute a significant demerit within the detail-oriented environment of an "Omakase" dining experience. read more

Genki Omakase was a really enjoyable experience overall, especially coming off trying a few other omakase spots in NYC. It felt pretty similar in style to Shinzo, but with some more unique and interesting touches that helped it stand out--especially in the beginning. The starters were honestly a highlight. Each dish felt creative and well-executed, with a lot of variety in flavor and presentation. It was one of those openings where you get excited about what's coming next because everything is hitting in a slightly different, more unexpected way. When it came to the nigiri portion, things leveled out a bit for me. The quality was still solid and everything tasted fresh, but it felt a little less exciting compared to the earlier courses. That said, I'll be fair--this might partially be on me since we had just done four omakase spots in four days, so it's hard not to start comparing or feeling a bit of overlap at that point. Even with that in mind, the overall experience was great. The meal was well-paced, the atmosphere was enjoyable, and you can tell there's a lot of care put into the food. If you're looking for an omakase in NYC that offers some creative starters and a solid overall experience, Genki is definitely worth checking out. read more

I love trying new omakase places whenever I'm in nyc and this one has become one of my favorites!! You should definitely make a reservation because they do get filled and harder to get seats if you walk in with a bigger group. They offer a 15 course for $89 which is such a good deal for what you get! Every piece was flavorful and all of the fish melts in your mouth! All of the course were so good it's hard to pick a favorite! The staff were great! The waiter always checked if you needed more water/tea and cleared the plates efficiently. I do not understand the reviews here. It must be that people just love a good "deal" and don't really care about the quality as long as they feel they're getting said deal. A deal is always worth pursuing, except in the case of raw fish. Discount sushi is never worth it. This place's entire model is based on a steep discount, so they clearly are using lower cost fish to make that work, especially considering rent can't be cheap, service costs are fixed, only way to reduce overall costs is through food cost. The quality of the fish was clearly reflected in this discount.. it was bad. Some of the dishes I would say were inedible. My gf had to spit out the scallop in the bathroom, after watching that I didn't bother to eat mine. a number of the sushi items tasted OK, they weren't all "BAD", but certainly not something enjoyable or anywhere near the quality levels of food of NYC. Ambiance was not great. Lighting was bright, decor was sparse and of strange taste, Christmas music blaring.. and when the xmas music wasn't blaring, they were rocking Pitbull. Came here for Omakase and it was superb. Came here for the 17 pcs for $98. There were couple of ones that i loved: Oyster, red snapper, king salmon, lean tuna, sea urchin, fatty tuna, and the A5 wagyu w. toro & foie gras. The ambiance was great. lighting was perfect, noise was not loud we were able to have a conversation and share our experiences. It's definitely shorter than other omakase experience, so if you're looking for that experience, look away. I would say the whole experience is roughly 1 hour which is perfect for a tourist like me with a packed agenda every-time I travel to NYC. I personally thought everything was deliciously made, and since it's not the traditional type of omakase, they do accommodate your dietary restrictions. It was about time I tried genki omakase! I am happy to say this place is on my top three contenders for omakase around the city! We arrived for lunch and it wasnt too busy, it was just me and my party dining in so it was quite enjoyable and relaxing. Each piece was curated so perfectly, there were no bad pieces. I even enjoyed the hotate, something I am normally not a fan of. Highlight pieces for me was the black cod, uni (look at the massive piece you get!), otoro. What was really surprising to me was the dessert. I thought we skipped a course straight onto dessert however to my surprise it was unagi with banana! Thinking about this combo made me quite questionable however the sweet, salty and smokiness of the uni went really well with the banana! The chef was personable and I enjoyed our experience here! So omakase could range from $100 to $800. Here's 15 pc $89. Good price to start the omasake tasting journey in nyc. Review on the sushi: Kaki oyster - it's ok, it's better without the soysauce Kanpachi - ok kinda bland , fish is crunchy good texture Ginadara - surprisingly excellent, melt into the mouth Sea bream & striped jack ok, white fish very light taste. (The rice temperature too hot. Chef had threw away rice on his bowl because it got cold so he got new one from rice cooker .... He didn't wait long enough so it's too hot for the sushi) The rice itself could have more flavor. Butter fish - chili on sushi something new, like.."oh" ..... Not spicy but wont be my favorite. Salmon is good Lean tuna - personally not a fan, still good Prawn - i gave my feedback, the soysauce is the problem, too salty and it's better not to put any soysauce, cannot taste the sweetness of the prawn , sad because that supposed to be my favorite. Sea scallop - fresh, good texture but don't like it being cut and topped soysauce (not as sweet as the one come from Japan) Sea urchin - fresh and thanks Jay doubling up the urchin for us. My co-workers and I had a 15 piece omakase dining experience for dinner. It was clean and there were plenty of seats and space in the waiting area. There is a coat rack. Of course we all had our favorites. I thought their unagi eel was unique because it was sweet. It was fused with a banana. I would say a nice dessert at the end. A quick casual spot in Greenwich village, For $75 you can get a solid 13-course omakase in the heart of Greenwich Village. From uni to ikura to wagyu with foie gras, there's a wide variety of courses. Some of my personal favorites were: - 銀鱈 (black cod) - 目鯛 (butter fish) - 大トロ (fatty tuna with caviar) So king salmon, uni, and fatty tuna are standard courses for most omakase in the city but the oven baked black cod was a nice surprise! It was cooked all the way through but still glistening with just the right amount of seasoning. However, the other courses here are a little heavy on the soy sauce and seasonings. Very standard but good omakase for a good price! I got 13 pieces for $72 and my friend got 17 pieces for $98. We both thoroughly enjoyed every piece! The environment was super fun and lively - they were even playing EDM! Definitely a different mood than some of the much slower paced and quieter omakase places I've been to. This is the best food and service I have ever had. Michelin star quality. My wife and I reserved about 2 weeks ahead of time for a Sunday dinner service. The staff was the most professional I have ever had the pleasure of dining with and the chef was so skilled it blew me away. Each piece was cut, prepared, sauced, and presented to perfection. The selection included an incredible variety of the finest quality fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and echinoderms that are currently in season. The chef prepared each piece as a work of art and had phenomenal recommendations for sake customized to the pallet of the those dining. I truly cannot recommend this place enough. It is expensive, but for the quality of service and food I would consider this very affordable. I have been to Michelin stared places that did not have the service and quality of food this place offers. Even the design of the restaurant highlights the elegance and quality of the food. Fast paced with really good quality fish! My boyfriend and I came here for the 17 course omakase for $98. We were in and out of the restaurant within an hour. The place offers BYOB, but you can also order sake. The interior is simple and our chef didn't talk too much. I wish he would explain the cuts of fish more, but he would usually just tell us the name of the fish and move on. The Amadai, Kumamoto Oyster, and Kanpachi were wonderful starters! Nothing beats sashimi. They used house sauces to elevate these courses. Some of my favorite nigiri were the Black Cod, King Salmon, Kinmedai, and of course Otoro! OK omakase spot that fails to stand out but has a few redeeming qualities at a decent value. The first thing I noticed was the lack of vibe overall. There is a simple, long, well lit counter that is not particularly trendy, intimate, etc. The waitstaff checks in on you often but neither they nor the chefs were particularly warm. When we were seated we were offered water, tea, or sake - I was pleasantly surprised to see the sake was complimentary and they refilled my glass as I emptied it. I am not sure if this is always the case. Most importantly the omakase itself was underwhelming and featured some truly odd choices but did have some highlights as well. I was thrown off by the choice of compliment for some courses such as sweet jelly on the scallops and an overpowering balsamic on the fluke. Even the most photogenic add-on, the "gianter", was served on a buttery puff pastry that just washed out all flavor (definitely go with "the kissing" instead). The most disappointing part was the quality of the Uni, in spite of its Hokkaido origin. The best pieces were the Kumamoto oyster, Ebi with yuzu, King Salmon with tomato, Uni+Wagyu+Foie, and Shako (seriously amazing fattiness reminiscent of ocean perch). The dessert, a warm banana slathered in minced Unagi, was shockingly delicious. Overall, you could do worse than 17 pieces and complimentary sake for $98 but if you are a seasoned Omakase goer I would skip over Genki. read more

This recently popped up all over my feed so i had to come try it out. We made a reservation for 5PM on Sunday to celebrate finishing the Brooklyn half. We both opted for the 17 piece. We got seated properly and got to eating. The pieces came out quickly and the first 3/4 of the serving was pretty..normal. Not to say they were bad, but I think we had high expectations that weren't met. As others have said, most of the pieces are seared. I feel like you lose the taste and freshness of the fish with this. Some pieces had salsa on them which was slightly weird to me. The black cod piece and the scallop though, those two were definitely *chef's kiss* magnificent. I was really looking forward to the wagyu with uni and foie gras piece and when I finally ate it..was indifferent. The texture was nice but the wagyu seemed a bit ordinary. Service as great though and you do get a good amount for the price along with aycd sake so worth at least a visit. read more

First time at Genki Omakase and I can honestly say that I was impressed with the quality and quantity of the meal from start to finish. Everything tasted fresh. Our chef was also friendly. He talked thru every piece of nigiri placed in front of us. My favorite had to be the wagyu + uni + foie gras combo. It was crazy delicious! Unfortunately, I had to dock off a star because it got pretty rowdy in there on a Tuesday night when some of us just wanted to unwind after a long work day. Three girls from the previous seating stayed behind and continued to drink complimentary sake with the chefs. The chefs also started blasting music thru out the entire restaurant for them as well. It was very difficult for the rest of the customers to hold other conversations. Our chef would also leave occasionally to drink with the girls. Spectacular experience! This was my second time joining them, and I was afraid that I would be disappointed after a very good first time, but otherwise, everything was at the highest level. Very important: 17 pieces, maybe a bit too much if you are not super hungry. The first time I was at Genki, perhaps I was hungry, but it went super smooth. We took 17 pieces again the second time, and we were so done at number 11 We did not even know how to continue with the rest. Also, perhaps it was the chef's fault because pieces were coming too fast. Our chef served three people, including two of us, and our three seatings finished the first. FOOD Their selection of fish is impressive! I've tried fish that I have never tried before, and everything is incredibly fresh. Each piece we tried was bursting with flavor. One thing: my second time dining with them, I was missing a little bit of extra wasabi and perhaps a bit extra sauce in some pieces; we had a different chef this time and obviously a bit different style. But I cannot say anything bad here; it is more about personal preferences. Their menu is seasonal because what I had in August differed from what I had now in April. They also have a great choice of Sake and nonalcoholic drinks. We had baby squid for an appetizer and were afraid to eat it; it was a bit "too alive" but undoubtedly delicious. Also, towards the end of your dinner, they offered to add some extra -- if you like -- but most people are beyond full by the end of 17 courses. SERVICE There is little of service to value here. But one thing I would like to see better is for a chef to explain what type of fish we eat, where it comes from, and talk to us about food, as it's definitely an experience. The first time I was at Genki, we had a bit of a slippery moment because we were 15 minutes late, and they did not want to serve 17 courses, and I had to argue that -- but all went well eventually. AMBIENCE It is a charming space. I liked that it is not shoe box-size; there is a waiting area, which adds some coziness and makes waiting comfortable if you arrive early. Besides the bar seating, there are no other tables. I highly recommend this Omakase spot! As you can see, it has been at the top of my list since I returned there for the second time. I think it is a solid 4-star review (closer to 4.5 stars). The only reason it is not 5 is that I was missing interaction with the chef and the fast timing. We had a 13-course omakase, which was surprisingly affordable. Chef Jay was incredibly attentive and took great care of us, even adding a little extra to the sushi, making it feel more special. We made a same-day reservation and were the last ones in the restaurant. One thing to note: we chose Genki because it was known for being BYOB with no corkage fee, but that hasn't been the case for the last six months. There's now a $50 corkage fee, so beware if you're planning to bring your own bottle! read more

Day and time of seating : Friday 7:30pm This is a much larger place than the last two omakase places I've gone to in the last month which is a nice surprise as I can appreciate the space. I was dreading sitting close o the bathroom but in the end , it didn't make a big difference. The place is clean , smells nice. I was there with 2 friends and we had a fun time ! For the food, I posted some of my favorite pieces . I think showcasing the actual menu is a nice touch so it's easier to follow what's being served . The pieces were supposed to get better by piece but strangely enough , I like some of the earlier ones served. My favorites are the usual - scallops , salmon , tuna belly , and the last two pieces . This is the 3rd omakase place I've gone to in the last 5-6 weeks so it's hard not to compare . All are good for different reasons . I think the sushi pieces served here are simple and tasty ( at times light on the sauce but I could have asked for more but didn't ). I preferred the fish to have been thoroughly thawed ( on some ). In general , for the ambiance , place , location , food and especially the service , it's well worth the price ! It's a place I would recommend . It's byob ( there's a liquor store close by ) so need not worry . They're a bit more strict with time unlike one of the places that I went to so if you get the 17 pieces , with the time allocated , you would have to eat any additional pieces quickly .
