Walking into Maki Kosaka from the bustle of NYC is simply the beginning of a really extraordinary experience. You will take a moment to adjust your eyes and your being to the ambiance as it is specifically geared to relaxation. And... your dining experience has merely begun. We got there early (had reservations) and were seated immediately at a long communal table just below the sushi chefs. My family frequents this establishment whenever they are in NY. For some of us this was our first-but not last- visit. This is a Japanese hand roll restaurant. The fish is fresh and the flavors are wonderful. I have to say that portions are small-similar to some tapas places- so you have to order several varieties to have a "meal". Hostess was just simply wonderful with recommendations and attentiveness to each of our party of 4. I wish I had remembered her name. She served with a smile and a caring you don't always see or feel when dining out. Here's another huge plus...the rest room was beautiful. It was CLEAN and well appointed. For that you get a quite small amount of food (especially since so much of it is the rice base). Fits in a corner of a small box as you can see. There was a really sweet one (tastes like strawberry jam) which I found weird and one that was really spicy. We went for the signature grab hand roll set. We also ordered the Hokkaido uni cup and since we went during happy hour, we also tried their crab croquette. The crab croquette was delicious, it came out hot and the filling was melting as you bit into it. The Hokkaido uni cup was very fresh, melt in your mouth, sweet and umami. All signature rolls were very good but the red snapper with plum stood out the most. Since I can't tolerate spiciness they were nice enough to switch the yellowtail jalapeño into yellowtail scallion, which I really appreciated. Once we finished our meals they gave us enough time and did not rush us for the check (like many restaurants in the city usually do). Would really recommend this place for a date! read more

Recently dined at this restaurant offering the unique concept of a 'grab handroll' where you pick up sushi with seaweed wraps, and I was thoroughly impressed with my experience. First off, the waitress was so pleasant and attentive. She checked up on us frequently and made sure we were well taken care of. Also, the restaurant presented with a clean interior and ample space. I opted for the grab handroll set (5 pcs) which was $38. The entire set was so yummy (mouth is watering right now as I'm writing). The only thing is that the set wasn't that filling, so I ordered an additional roll afterwards. Wow, I was blown away by Maki Kosaka. I saw a post about their Grab Handroll set on Instagram, and the fish looked super high quality, so I decided to give it a try. It is very easy to get a reservation at this spot, which I can understand since the bar area is huge for an omakase-style setup! There are two sections for seating, and I think each could probably seat 20 people. Service was super friendly as well. The Grab Handroll Set ($45) did not disappoint! I loved the concept of giving us a little packet of seaweed-- the seaweed was super crunchy during the entire meal! The fish-to-rice ratio was impressive, and I loved that the quality of the fish wasn't overpowered by their sauce or ingredient pairings. You could also taste the fish's freshness since it is such a large component of the roll. My favorites were the Tuna and Red Snapper, but everything was superb. Came in for a late lunch on the weekend. There was plenty of space still when we walked in maybe an hour until closing for lunch service. Ordered the grab handroll set. They serve the nori in a little baggy. It kept the nori fresh and crispy. Each fish was super fresh. Everything was already macerated, so it was hard to tell if the fish was truly tender or if it was just because they were already mushed. However, there was no fishy taste at all to any of the pieces, a good thing. Everything tasted very clean. The hamachi was the most disappointing though. It's usually my favorite fish, and I can tell it from the taste alone usually. However, this one had a really mild flavor that I was debating which piece it could be. Toro with gobi chips was good because of the textural contrast between the tender fish and crispy chip. All the flavor pairings with each piece was really nice. You could see that they possibly use real wasabi because it didn't look completely like paste. I don't think the set is super filling, but it definitely is a good lighter lunch. read more

I went for an early dinner based on a friend's recommendation. The space was austere but stylish with bar table height seating surrounding sushi chef stations. The music had a bit of throb but not too much to distract from the food. Service was attentive. Food was delicious. We started with fried tofu in a dashi broth with scallion. The tofu was light as a feather with the crisp tofu complemented by the dashi. I probably could have stopped here as this was happiness in a bowl, but ai did not. I followed that with the 2nd hand roll set - five in all; from salmon, red snapper my absolute favorite; toro and scallop - I can't remember the last one. All of them were good, well prepared by the meticulous chef standing a few feet away. We were in a bit of a hurry as we were heading to a show so no dessert this time. I don't have much to add that hasn't already been said, but I've been wanting to come to Maki Kosaka for a while, and I could not have had a better first experience. Everything is so fresh and obviously prepared to order, and made quickly directly in front of you. The one thing that kind of stood out above the rest was the fried Seabass, but other than that, I think everything here was delicious and you really can't go wrong with ordering any one singular thing. Definitely make a reservation, and be aware that you will be sitting next to strangers because it is low bar style seating, so this is probably a place I would more so recommend for a meal with just one other person. Maki Kosaka serves amazing sushi in a beautiful space, with an approachable menu and demeanor that is friendlier than a formal omakase. Staff are attentive and warm, knowledgeable and friendly. Every seat in the house is excellent, surrounding the sushi chefs' work stations in a modern island bar. Music leans pop, rather than zen instrumental. One of the memorable things about Maki Kosaka is the sushi set up leans toward a "grab hand roll" which are like three bite nigiri that you use a nori wrapper to pick up yourself. It's fun, it allows the sushi presentation to sing before you eat it, and it's a bit faster than one nigiri at a time. Each person probably can eat 6-8 grab hand rolls comfortably. They also do a temaki hand roll, which is more popular with other sushi restaurants. Temaki are a tiny bit bigger. The menu is tight, but very well curated. Standout sushi of the night: Toro with gobi chip - excellent pairing of textures Seared scallop Yellowtail with jalapeno miso Seared garlic botan ebi (shrimp) Hokkaido uni Shishito pepper appetizer had this fantastic glaze I would absolutely eat here again, for a date or friend's celebratory meal. The grab toro hand rolls are delightful. I could probably eat 10 if nobody stopped me. This is a real gem. Easy to make reservations, but you need to leave a credit card and there are strict cancellations with $ penalties. You can tell a good sushi restaurant when their peripheries are refined. Little things like their agedashi tofu skin is light and sticky in texture with a balanced broth. Their salads have delicious dressings. The sushi rice is slightly warm with a bold vinegar to it. Absolutely amazing how many sushi restaurants FAIL the sushi rice. They should just put up a sign saying we take short cuts on our sushi. Maki Kosaka does no such thing. read more

The service is very attentive, and the place accommodates to food allergies, so they'll replace any pieces to fit dietary needs. If I were to nit pick, the pace of the rolls were a bit fast and there wasn't much time to chat with my party in between pieces, but that's just my preference. My bf told me it was better than all the Michelin star restaurants I bring him to and then wanted to cancel all our reservations to come back here during our NYC trip. It really is that good if you like sushi. Flip to the back of the menu to see all the other goodies. We came right when it opened so it was quiet here and we were able to ask the chef what his favorites were. It's a relaxing atmosphere. You're in a large rectangular table facing the center. My favorites - Seared Garlic Botan Ebi (4.5/5) - the torch gave it a slight roasted flavor and it was perfectly seasoned. You won't need to dip it in soy sauce nor wasabi! I had semi-high hopes for Maki Kosaka, and wow this place did not disappoint. I got the signature handroll set, and everything from the quality of the fish to the seaweed to the rice to the sauce was outstanding. Every piece was a standout and I honestly would go there again which is super high praise for New York. The service was a little slow at first but considering that the set only has five pieces I'm glad it was paced out. I also got a yuzu sake which was really good. Just a note that the seating is omakase style (at the bar) so I wouldn't recommend coming in a group larger than two. read more

The restaurant was pretty empty on a Friday evening. It was very dark inside and everyone is seated facing the counter, however the counter is much taller, so you can't actually see the chefs preparing the food. My friend and I both ordered the grab hand roll set. The food was good and very aesthetic, however not memorable. In addition, after the set, we both felt hungry and had to go elsewhere in order to feel full. Overall I'm glad I tried it, but I would probably go elsewhere next time. read more

Really didn't like this experience - don't waste your time here! Atmosphere is really stale - the entrance had one painting and some nice bottles off to the side. But as you enter, there is a center table where you can't really tell if your chefs are like omakase chefs or conveyor belt sushi chefs? We ordered the grab handroll set- which the price doesn't even make sense. $38 for 5 pieces? I get that they're meaty but they're not even that interesting pieces : shrimp / tuna / salmon. It felt so obvious they are marking up everything. Staff was really strange. Our host was very friendly, but then the chefs would literally throw down a piece then disappear. As we were paying - the tipping screen came up with a minimum of 20% and they literally hover over you as you're paying. Really pressuring you to not go lower? It was so awkward! Adding a star just for their bathroom. Really nice, clean bathroom. Otherwise, run!! read more

Maki Kosaka has a lot of great things going for it, but has a few misses that make me unable to rate it the full 5 stars. A great note to start: I was able to get a reservation here day-of on a Friday night for 2 people easily. When you walk in, it's a 2 section restaurant with a small bar/waiting area up front, and a huge space in the back with the counter wrapping around the center chef space. Honestly surprised me how nice it looked. I ordered the grab roll set. 5 pieces rolls for $38. Most add ons are about $8-10, unless you get something more premium. While the price point for the set wasn't super high, I did expect slightly larger rolls. It was barely larger than a nigiri, just with more rice, and often too much sauce. I will say: the seaweed wraps used here are probably the best I've had. The fish - I can't say the same. Almost every fish from the set lacked unctuousness, and it felt like they were trying to make up for a cheaper cut by adding fats like avocado and mayo. I also ordered the crab and ikura roll, and the seared scallop roll. The crab and ikura was good, but a bit heavy on the mayo, and the seared scallop was texturally nice, but missing sweetness from the scallop. Uni roll was an $18 add on, and while satisfying to have uni, I've definitely had better in nyc. I think fish could've been a bit less mashed, with less sauce to really taste the flavor and textural difference. Finally, a pro and a con: service was FAST. Maybe a little too fast. The chef was pre-preparing rolls on the side in whatever order he wanted, and immediately setting the next roll on our plates before we were even done chewing the previous roll. We were able avoid feeling rushed by just not eating the roll immediately, but still felt like we couldn't wait too long if we didn't want to affect the freshness of the piece. I wish he would have slowed down to check in with us, rather than run away and get started on the next orders immediately. At least the wait staff was incredibly welcoming and patient with me and my friends' slow ordering speed. Didn't feel rushed to get out at all. Overall, good, but not great. read more

Handrolls were fresh, service was excellent, and the environment was perfect for catching up with friends. I got the grab handroll set which is $45 and comes with 5 handrolls. The unique thing about this place is that the nori comes separate, and you use the nori to pick up your handrolls. I think the handrolls are quite tall to be able to pick them up effectively so I ended up using my chopsticks to place the handrolls onto the seaweed instead. Ranking the pieces from best to meh: seared botan ebi, yellowtail, toro, salmon, red snapper. I also got the uni cup to start and I loved how it featured fresh uni and seared uni. The seared uni was soooo good. The handroll set left me satisfied and not too full (often I feel like handroll spots pack a lot of rice in each piece but this place was not the case). read more

Seated us over 30 minutes late on a quiet Thursday afternoon. Didn't offer us any seating while we waited, despite requesting it for a member of our party having knee surgery. Take out food was decent during the pandemic, but serving size was incredibly small for the higher-than-average cost when compared to any similar restaurant. Was a fan for quite a while when they first opened years ago, but the way we were treated this time lost a lot of that goodwill. The dining itself was nice and the set rolls are tasty. Taken together though, the experience wasn't anything to write home about. One saving grace of the experience was the absolutely lovely botany store they shared the space with.
