I had been to Momoya on the Upper West Side before, but this was my first visit to the Chelsea location. The atmosphere here was a bit more lively and crowded compared to the more relaxed vibe of the UWS spot. I enjoyed my meal even more this time around. I started with the beet salad, which was delicious and offered great value given the generous portion size. it featured sliced beets, arugula, goat cheese, and walnuts. I also had my eye on the hijiki soybean salad--which is a bit smaller and reportedly homemade--so I may try that next time, along with the warm mushroom salad which looked very tasty. The edamame was standard but served as a nice starter. For my main rolls, I chose the salmon avocado and the yellowtail scallion. Both were very fresh and definitely worth ordering again. The salmon avocado roll had a nice touch of sesame seeds on the rice, while the yellowtail scallion was prepared with the seaweed on the outside. My boyfriend's sushi entree looked excellent, so I am considering that or the sushi-sashimi combo for my next visit. Honestly, I'm surprised this restaurant has a four-star rating. While the service was excellent, the food was consistently disappointing. We started with a lychee martini that tasted overwhelmingly of vodka, with barely any lychee flavor. Of the appetizers--the seaweed salad, cucumber salad, and edamame dumplings--the cucumber salad was the best. The seaweed salad tasted like a standard prepackaged version, while the dumplings had an unusual, unpleasant flavor and tasted as though they had come straight from the freezer. For our main dishes, we ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box and udon with tempura. The udon was acceptable, but the tempura was excessively oily, lacking the light, crisp texture you would expect. Even the chicken teriyaki was underwhelming; it tasted more like a reheated, prepared meal than something freshly cooked. The sushi was another letdown, with an odd flavor and appearance. The dynamite roll was especially disappointing, with an unpleasant texture and very little flavor beyond a touch of heat. The staff deserves credit for their attentive, friendly service, but unfortunately, that couldn't make up for the quality of the meal. We left feeling genuinely disappointed. read more

I came here for a team bonding events with a group of coworkers. It was relatively easy to get a table for 6 of us on a weekday night at 6pm. I ordered the chirashi bowl. It had a great selection of different cuts of fish, octopus, shrimp, and tamago. Each piece was very fresh and the portions were generous. I also liked that they put various seasonings on the rice including perilla which was a very nice touch. While the fish was all very fresh, it wasn't quite are flavorful and buttery as other sushi spot I've tried in the area, but very reasonable quality for the price. Love this place! We went here after some shopping and as always, food is phenomenal! We didn't have a reservation, but they were able to get us in after about 20 minutes. We started with a few appetizers, then onto our mains, all which were fantastic. What I would suggest, is for the restaurant to seriously work on their desserts. We ordered the blueberry crème brûlée, for us it was not edible. We asked for it to be exchanged, and they happily did so and exchanged it for mochi. The mochi was better than the Brûlée, but not a good dessert. I think if this restaurant can nail their desserts or just be really good at one or two, it would help your guests finish off their meals perfectly. Instead, having a not great dessert, is what was the last taste in our mouth, which didn't reflect the amazingness of all the earlier dishes. They are always respectable, listen to your needs, help you find whatever you need. 10 out of 10 best food in the neighborhood. It's probably insane that I hadn't been to Momoya yet when I'm always nearby. I always think I assumed they were ultra expensive. But they do almost every night have a line wrapped around out the door. Interestingly enough, they do have a very affordable lunch special every day where almost everything on a select menu is between $20-30. I've been twice so far and the food is super fresh. Like some of the freshest sushi I've ever had in my life. The service is truly impeccable and they're always super friendly. I ended up getting both times the 3 sushi roll for $20 deal. It's hard to pick a favorite. It's like picking your favorite child. But I really enjoyed the Yellowtail and the salmon avocado. They will not seat you until your entire party is at the restaurant you can be put on a waiting list which goes by extremely fast. Upon entering, there's a qr code you have to scan to put your name down as they don't take reservations. We had to wait about 30 min before getting seated. FOOD As someone who finds variety is the spice of life, I decided to order the Momoya Box ($28), which you can choose from chicken or salmon teriyaki as your main. The box also comes with miso soup, your choice of spicy tuna or california roll, tempura, salad and shumai. We found everything to be very fresh, especially the sushi and tempura. As for the shumai, it had an interesting texture (like wavy noodles on top) and probably the one thing I would skip again. SERVICE Service was great and the waitstaff kept checking up on us. The shop wasn't too busy. We could find a reservation without ur seats. The water refills were very frequent. I feel like they came around every 5-10 minutes. Service was polite. Tempura taster The batter is good and came out quickly. There's a lot of variation in the tempura, including seafood, which was nice. Tiny Spicy tuna There's a big center for the sushi which is not very strong, but has a fishy fishy flavor The rice is not really my favorite, on the but there's not a lot in the first place. I wanted a bit more of that tuna flavor from the top sashimi , but it was a bit underwhelming. The spicy tuna roll does not live up to its name... it's only barely spicy. Black dynamite roll There's a kind of sweet mango sauce which I almost mistook for eel sauce. It's a little surprising, but not bad. I liked the dynamite roll overall. I picked this adorable spot for Japanese fare to celebrate my husband's birthday. We went all out and happily ordered too much food for the two of us. Starters/Appetizers: Butakaku = Slow Cooked Berkshire Pork Belly, Daikon ($15) It came nicely wrapped in leaves and sat in a shallow pool of broth. We were excited by the fancy presentation but weren't too stoked about the taste. It reminded me of the pork belly that my mom uses to bring out some flavor in her Chinese soups. We usually don't eat the leftover pork belly and only drink the soup in my household. So to taste and see something similar here was disappointing, especially for $15. The flavor profile is very light and clean if that's what you're interested in. I give it a 2/5. Wagyu Crispy Rice = Seared A5 Miyazaki Wagyu Beef, Spicy Soy Vinaigrette, Cumin, Coriander Seed ($19) Really interesting concept! The wagyu was layered onto the roll of crispy rice like sushi. I can't do raw, so I didn't eat this one because the wagyu was only seared and not fully cooked through. My husband's only comment is that it wasn't memorable. Crispy Calamari served with sake plum sauce ($15) It was pretty good and more similar to Chinese-style crispy calamari than Italian-American-style. I say this because the calamari pieces weren't curled in and much fatter. Also, the batter that it was coated in had a light yellow color instead of a golden brown. I give it a 5/5. Crispy Lobster Spring Roll ($20?) My favorite appetizer out of the ones I tried here. I love spring rolls in general, and I eat a lot of 'em but this was the first time I had lobster in my spring roll and cut diagonally. A little sad that it only came with 4 small pieces. It felt filling to me. Oh and the spring roll came with a dipping sauce that wasn't the usual Worcestershire sauce from those dim sum places. I give it a 5/5. Entree: Sukiyaki Gozen = A5 Miyazaki Wagyu Beef Hotpot in Sweet Soy, Shirataki Glass Noodles, Burdock, Half Boiled Organic Egg, House Japanese Pickle ($35) It was served on this cute tray with a bunch of little plates housing rice, Japanese pickle, miso soup, etc. It was a very hearty dish, but more better suited for the winter time. The beef is the really thinly sliced type that's perfect for hotpot/shabu shabu. The miso soup didn't taste the same as the ones at my local Japanese restaurants... the ingredients were more elevated? I give it a 3.5/5. Spicy Salmon & Mango Roll with avocado and puffed rice ($18) The salmon was raw so I scraped off the salmon when I tried one piece. It was alright but maybe it would've tasted even better with the salmon? I'll never know, haha! My husband recalls it was pretty good though. I give it a 3.5/5. Dessert: Haru Ranman = Seasonal Parfait ($28) This will probably be the most expensive parfait that I ever have. It was actually $36 after tips and tax! I tried to order this after my lunch but the waitress said they ran out and the chef was going to need to make more for dinner patrons. So I had to come back when they opened up again for dinner to get my hands on it. I would say that the parfait was like an art exhibit and the chef surely put a lot of time and effort into creating it. But now that I've tasted the parfait, I would cap it at $18. I've definitely had better parfaits in my life, but I can't deny that it is the most beautiful and fun parfait I've come across. It's nice that it comes with a paper detailing the breakdown of what each ingredient in the parfait was and sakura powder on the side to dust onto the parfait. Crab cake- it was only ok, very strong truffle flavor, other than that nothing special. Outside was crispy, inside tasted doughy and soft crabby. Ok ginger flavor depending on the piece. Lobster tempura roll- Outside was crispy, inside was soft, couldn't really tell it was lobster because tempure was dominant flavor. Chocolate cake with matcha ice cream- eh, it was ok. Nothing special, tasted like microwaved premade cake. Creme brulee-a little too sweet, outside was nice and crispy, inside nice and creamy, the blueberry added a nice contrast.
