Alrighty let's get right into this so I ordered a California roll party platter for a party tonight. Usually I check before I leave, but had not time to take a full look to make sure everything looked spot on. I had placed my order to pick up at 5:45pm, and arrived at 5:55pm. Paying at the cashier you can tell that this place is ran by young people that don't care about quality of food being put out. From what I saw were employees mainly chilling in the room behind the cash registers. By the time I came home my older sister had noticed that there were about three pieces of sushi missing from the outer ring of the platter. While two of them looked like one of the workers got hungry and picked at the rice and left the crab for us to consume. Calling immediately we spoke to an associate that explained that they used a "bigger party platter" for our order, but usually use a smaller one. However, we all know that's a bunch BS. People do not pay $30 for the container it comes in, we pay for the food. Being only 10 minutes late makes me question how early we're these platters prepared, and food within this establishment. This PLACE IS AMAZING!! From the minute I walked into this place I was impressed with the vibe of it all to start. We were greeted by a friendly hostess which showed us to our table. He then explained how to use the tablet and how to order our food and then took our drink orders. At that point we saw a mini train zoom by to deliver food to a couple of tables away and it was so cool to watch. We then readily ordered our first round and just like that it came. We took our small plates and then pushed a yellow button to send back the mini train. It was so cool. The food was yummy and the portions are small so if you eat allot you just order 2 depending on the roll. At the end of the meal the server came over and just stacked the plates by color so that they can tally up our balance. The server then thanked us for coming and then sent us to the front to pay. We enjoyed the ambiance, location and most importantly the food. We will be back for sure. read more

For some quick sushi, Genki is not a bad place to come to. However, if you are planning to chow down, you might spend too much money here because it is not AYCE. The neat part is that you order on a tablet and the sushi shoots out on a bullet train. The sushi itself is decent. The fish is previously frozen, but still edible. They have some pretty good rolls, but this time they put too much sauce on the rolls. It really overpowered them. I tried the beef udon for the first time and it is pretty good. If you are looking to fill up on something, that can do the trick. I ended up spending about $80 on two people (myself included), so I don't think it was really worth it. This is my kiddos one of fav spots on the island. There is always a wait tho, unless you get there as soon as they open. I think they've been out of salmon Kama bc when we dined in for lunch (as soon as they opened) they still didn't have the Kama :( This place is pretty consistent. Rather you just want a quick bite to eat or devour like 30 plates like we normally do, this is a fun place to visit. The price is pretty decent too. Been to conveyor belt sushi places where the median price was about $5.50. Here you could enjoy variety of nigiri, rolls, sashimi, other fried yuminess for between $2-$5.50 I think the most we have eaten was about 30 some plates and our total bill was just under $100. read more

All the while conversing about how fabulous it was and how this place rocks and how it will be our new family go-to and how we will bring visitors and relatives and how everyone in the whole world should experience food delivered by train. Then. "Mommy! I have to pee!" "Oh, okay. Excuse me, where is your bathroom?" And this was the answer: "Oh, the nearest bathroom is DOWNSTAIRS NEXT TO CENTER STAGE". And what would I do if my husband had not been there? I suppose I could bring a piece of paper saying "DO NOT CLEAN, WE ARE COMING BACK" and stick that in the middle of the table should we require a bathroom expedition (And the odds of that are very, very high). Here's where all you childless people say "Just have them use the bathroom before you go in!" Well, yes. I could do that. I DO do that. But just because a child uses the bathroom prior to going some place does NOT mean they won't have to use the bathroom twenty minutes later. That is one of the many curses of having children. Once and a while I get a terrible urge to get some cheap sushi. Genki always delivers. At this Ala Moana location, they not only deliver, they do it in style. With a touch screen automated system, you can have your sushi zipped to you in a toy race car. I couldn't contain my inner 12 year old excitement every time the car came with a new dish. With all the conveyer belts and zipping toys flashing before your eyes, this is what I would envision if I ever got shrunk by a mad scientist and dropped into a vending machine to survive. Service was spot on by the watchful eye of several waiters working in team. As far as the sushi... This place is like the Corepower Yoga of Sushi restaurants...all flash and no substance. Most of the sushi was flavorless without using copious amounts of wasabi and shoyu. My wife enjoyed the spicy crab roll. I didn't really have a highlight except for the fact that my cheap sushi craving was satisfied for another year. My wallet sure liked this place at $35 for two. **Updated post renovations and their new belt system.** Before I start this review, the issue I have with this place is price. You are paying sushi bar prices for kaiten quality food. Don't make the excuse that fish prices has gone up. If I can get 8 pc's of hamachi sashimi at Kyung's for $10, why the heck would I pay for 4 pieces for $10 at Genki? Compare Genki Sushi prices to Morio's. After this, I don't see how anyone can justify Genki as "cheap". Cheap quality, sure. The whole double decker belt train system that Genki uses in Asia has now arrived here in Ala Moana. I'm not a fan of Genki, as I believe they are overpriced and inferior quality sushi, and the only reason why I heard they installed this system was from a friend who posted pictures of this on their Facebook wall. Intrigued, I grabbed my girlfriend and we hit up Ala Moana to see what the fuss is all about. Since it just reopened and the newspaper hyped this place up, the lines were about an hour wait at 5:30pm. The staff were very accommodating and friendly when we got our spot in the line. There are two sections of belts. One with the traditional kaiten sushi belt and the rear section without. Both sections have the double decker delivery system which brings your ordered sushi to you from the kitchen. Think a train carrying your sushi from the kitchen and stops to your table. Cool and cute system, but that is just it. It is a complete novelty. The ordering process is done through a screen to the belt side of your table, but it is mounted so high up, your arms will get tired and so will your neck from looking so sharply up. Prices are about the same as Genki before, extremely high. You will have a limit of ordering 4 items each time and the kitchen serves up the order quite fast. Here lies another problem: Why even use the regular kaiten belt anymore? When we were eating, I decided to check out if anyone got anything off the belt and throughout our whole meal, we did not notice one plate missing. Menu wise, there isn't much in there besides ahi, variation of ahi, salmon, variation of salmon, ika, ikura, hamachi, cooked items, and western inspired rolls. The poke bowl we had were tiny and the poke itself tasted old and dry. How can you open for the first day and serve up tasteless, dry poke? The negitoro was awful and looked alot like ahi scrape. You can easily see pieces of gristle in it. The only saving grace was the salmon. $16 bucks, 4 plates. We only had 4 plates because the food didn't match their prices. Yes there are cheaper plates, but those are made of spam and other things that are NOT SEAFOOD. What's the point of going to a sushi restaurant to eat corn mayo and spam sushi? Overall, if you want to check it out, go for it. Consider it a novelty as the quality of food never improved since my last review. Do yourself a favor, save that money, go to that place across the street that does a cheaper kaiten sushi and order direct from the chef. You're going to pay less than half the price and get better quality. read more

Eating sushi here was super fun! I loved that we could place our order on the nifty touch screen menu without repeatedly bothering a server to order. You can order as many times as you want (up to 4 items per order) and your order comes buzzing out to your table on tray shaped like a space shuttle or something else cute. I'm not a vegetarian but people often think I am because I often prefer vegetarian dishes. So, I was happy there were many choices for me - cold tofu, soba noodles, miso soup, crispy green bean sushi (I ate way too much of this - so good!), avocado rolls, etc. It's pretty popular so there's been a wait both times I've been here but I don't mind waiting if the food and service are good, and they both are. Snapchat-worthy unique quality: the Shinkansen rail delivers your sushi as you order on a tablet! I'm so glad this Genki is finally done with renovations, I remember the days it was only a revolving sushi bar. This way, your sushi is made to order and is delivered right to your table. I always order the teri-mayo green bean, seafood salad (krab + onion), and assorted sashimi. The teri-mayo made to order is SO FRESH and you can taste the crispiness in the breading, ugh I die it's so good you have to try it. Their menu isn't overwhelmed with many specialty rolls, which is a good thing. Their handrolls / regular cut sushi is so delicious and cheap too. They offer desserts like cakes and mochi ice cream, too! Overall, Genki is a favorite stop of mine when I'm in the area and want a light fill. Oh Genki Sushi...how much I miss thee. I wish I could have your spicy tuna in the bay area. Went to Genki today with a few friends as I normally do when I come back to visit. There is something about the spicy tuna that just calls to me. Everytime I come back, the prices seem to get more and more expensive, and the colored plates seem to change design. While I saw some low stars for this place from other reviewers, I wonder if it is because they are ordering the wrong dishes. In my opinion, the 3 best things on the menu starting with the best first are the following: 1. Spicy Tuna (Ahi). It comes as a bowl, as nigiri, or as a roll. Anyway its served is just delish! Personally I prefer the nigiri style. I can't get enough of their spicy tuna. 2. Fresh Salmon. The fresh salmon nigiri comes with some mayo, thinly sliced onions (maui I think), and a lemon. I am a HUGE fan of raw salmon. Top it off with sweet onions and the perfect amount of shoyu and I'm in heaven. 3. Chawan Mushi. This isn't sushi, but a steamed egg custard type dish served in a cup. In it there is crab, shiitake mushrooms, and other yummy goodness that I can't recall right now. Today's chawan mushi tasted like perfection. The egg was perfectly steamed and tasty. Our waiter today was very friendly and attentive. Always came back to make sure we were OK and refilled our drinks. My only complaint is that there is always a line to get in. Our first time here... 40 min wait at 8pm on a Saturday. Two of us packed in at the counter with arms like a t-rex aaand a dirty ice water cup--is it green mold or wasabi? I don't want to know. Decided to eat at Genki Sushi recently with my sister and nieces. Their new ordering and delivery system is awesome! My nieces enjoyed placing their orders (inari - their favorite) on the touch screen computers and equally enjoyed watching their orders arrive via race car, surfboard, etc. I recommend their salmon karage (super delicious). The tamago sushi, tuna sushi, and california roll are just as tasty. Parking at the mall can be challenging with so much construction going on, but if you get there early enough, parking shouldn't be a problem. read more

It's clean and orderly inside with large windows, a good turnaround time (~15-20min wait), friendly and prompt service, and probably one of the more decent sushi among other Genkis. Yes, it's true, the sushi here isn't as good as other sushi spots especially since the cheap sushi options they offer sucks. Their better sushi are the more expensive plates. Go figure! I'd say they offer the same sushi grade as Kozo sushi but Kozo has a hand up since it's about half the price. But this location offers a townie's dream and a cool vibe: plenty of parking; nice clean but casual vibe; cool ass conveyor belt, kitchen to table delivery of plates; and decent service. If anything, I'd say one is paying for the novelty, accessibility, and the cleanliness of the place. An enjoyable experience but not the best. Otherwise, choose another sushi place. read more

Decided to come here one day with my parents because it was close and we wanted some sushi... When we walked in the server asked "how many" like he was impatient with us. And then gave us a ticket and told us "wait outside". When they finally called our number, we walked back in and the same server asked us again "how many"? He didn't recognize us, and he asked in the same impatient manner. I get that they are busy and seem to be understaffed-- though there were about five servers, in a small restaurant plus the sushi comes to us by itself... The food quality is decent, I'm not expecting super fresh .... But the prices did go up and if I'm paying $60 for 3 people, I would expect the fish to be fresher than what it is there. For $60 I might as well have 6 bowls at ahi & vegetable or go elsewhere. The one thing that bothered me the most was the one at the cash register. While we were paying, she printed out the receipt for a signature, smacked it down on the table and left to do something else. She didn't mention any "I'll be right back" she just left. I knew that their portions got small and much more expensive but I didnt realize that it got THAT small. The rice under the fish is tiny and the amount of seafood is tiny...tisk tisk. Ala Moana shopping center genki sushi is the only place in the island where you have touch screen to make an order instead of waiting for your waiter/waitress. The price of the sushi went up a little then usual but it helps you don't have to wait for them to make your order. The menu even has green button where you can order it without green onion/onion. I wish they have button where you can order it without rice too.( hint to the manager). Since a lot of people like sushi and it's in the mall so it's usually quite busy. normal wait is about 15~30 min wait and on the prime dinner or lunch time it can be over an hour. Once you get a table they serve you with hot tea and if you want cold water you have to request for it. The Genki at Ala Moana is always crowded ... always! Every time I visit--even if it's for an early lunch around 11:30 a.m.--the eatery has always been busy, but when I do go early, the wait isn't nearly as long as it is during peak dining times. That being said, the Genki at Ala Moana is pretty unique because you have the option of ordering your dishes and they come out to you on cute little vehicle-like boats with wheels. It's always fun to order electronically (though at first, the system can be a bit confusing), but it's a great experience if you've never tried it! Also, I'm not sure what kind of tea they use at Genki, but it's one of my favorites! I can drink cup after cup and not tire of it. Unlike the teas at some other Japanese restaurants, this tea isn't powdery, but it's still light and very, very good! The green tea taste also isn't super strong. Here are some of my favorites when it comes to dining at this Genki (I think the menus are the same at other Genkis on the island, but I'm not sure): "Chicken Teriyaki Bowl": This is one of my mom's favorite Genki dishes, but I always get a few bites of her chicken. The chicken is soft and tender, and it's coated sufficiently with teriyaki sauce. You might end up with some leftover rice, but a decent amount of both chicken and rice are included in the bowl. Plus, you might want some of that rice to accompany some of your other sushi (or chicken plate) dishes. "Hot Dog": This two-piece sushi dish looks like mini hot dogs, but with an extra-long, overgrown hot dog. The hot dogs are indeed much longer than the rest of the sushi, but the rice and sushi still are a great accompaniment to the tender, not-overgrilled hot dog. If I don't go for the four-piece hot dog roll, I usually get this dish. "Spam Sushi": No trip to Genki is ever complete without at least one of these "Spam Sushis." It features two mini, Spam musubi-like creations topped with some kind of savory sauce. I love the taste of the crispy Spam; these bite-sized pieces take me back to my elementary school days of Spam musubi home lunches. Though these little morsels can be devoured in 2-3 bites, they're a great pre-meal snack. I usually start off any Genki visit with one of these. "Chicken Karaage Plate": This little dish typically came on a red plate, and it was one of the better deals you could score at Genki. You get 5-6 pieces of crispy chicken karaage, which features a tender interior and crispy, sizzling exterior. This used to be my go-to, until I realized that I often got more full on the chicken pieces, which left less space for other sushi that I wanted! But this is still one of the best deals you can get on the Genki menu ... if you're super hungry, you can get a few of these and try to spare your wallet some damage. "Two-Piece California Roll": I usually get the two-piece California roll--featuring two larger pieces--instead of the smaller, four-piece California roll. The two dishes are essentially the same, but I'm guessing the four-piece roll is on a more expensive plate because of the cut? I'm not sure. But since the roll is the same, I just go for the two-piece version and am completely satisfied. "Crab Mayo": These two little sushi basically consists of imitation crab and mayo, but I love that filling that's often found inside of California rolls, and it's so good! I usually get at least one of these plates during Genki visits. "Unagi": Though I'm not a huge fan of raw fish, I do love unagi. Genki's two-piece unagi sushi is the perfect portion to satisfy my unagi fix but leave plenty of room for me to enjoy other dishes as well. I especially love the flavor of the sauce that's drizzled over the unagi. Oreo Cookie ice cream sandwich (dessert): Though this ice cream sandwich is pretty standard, I like it because it features two moist OREO cookies and cookies and cream (or was it vanilla?) ice cream in between. If I'm getting dessert at Genki, it's usually this ice cream sandwich or one of their cupcakes. read more

To keep my review short 'n sweet, I prefer this location over the Ward location. Why? This place actually has employees who WORK, not socialize over stupid nonsense! Ordering Take Out is super easy. The Spicy Bowl is the best. Their service is exceptional in my opinion. =D read more

Yelp 365: 01/365 I'm going to start off my commitment of 365 by reviewing one of the restaurants that serve one of my favorite foods: sushi. They have an assortment of plates here with prices coordinated by color. I think it is (from cheapest to most expensive) yellow, green, red, silver, and then black. I can not say it is the best sushi I have ever tasted, but for the prices they give it is ok; hence the three stars. Sometimes it depends on the day you go. It can be great, but on some days, it can be poorly made. I think it depends on which day you go. The sushi here tastes not too bad. I personally like (out of everything here) the spicy bomb, the soft shell crab is not too bad for the price, and the other nigiri style sushi is pretty good too (salmon, ahi, ebi, etc.) The wait staff is on average ok. They got around four people going around as fast as they can trying to serve customers, but sometimes it irks me when they forget your orders; especially after they write them down on their personal notepads they carry. I used to love this place once upon a time ago. But honestly, what happened??? The consistency has definitely changed and it makes me all up in my feels *sad face* Lol... the color of the ahi screams Hep A and I do not want to relive those days. Lmao. I had a lot of memories here, it's sad that it isn't what it used to be. Not sure if there is a new store manager or kitchen manager, but it's almost like this location tries to milk each supply in the kitchen as long as possible before it going super bad lol, even risking serving the raw fish literally brown and texture looks like it's been sitting in a container uncovered in the fridge for atleast 3 days. The waikele and pearl ridge location on the other hand is very consistent and is just as I remembered. Not sure if my family, friends and myself will return to this location. In the meantime, hopefully they fix whatever went wrong. read more

My friend and her 4 year old call this "mad face sushi" because of the logo. She's not much of a sushi-eater (okay, not at all), but this is one of the places she will go, so of course I had to take her up on it. Again, with the decisions...it was fun to watch the sushis go by, but slightly stressful (not in a serious way) to make the right decision at the right time. I've never been to one of these sushi-on-a-belt type of places before. The charge you based on the number of plates you have. Different costs have different colors. The sushi is pretty good. Not awesome. But pretty good. I guess it's what I'd expect from a chain sushi place in a mall. And it's pretty cheap, too. I left feeling full enough and my bill was about $13. If I were with my non-sushi-eating friend I'd go back. read more

Great value...relatively cheap sushi on the conveyor belt experience. I brought my roommate who has never had sushi from a conveyor belt before, and she was totally floored and amused. I went to Kuru Kuru Sushi earlier this month and I felt that the fish was a lot fresher there, and overall better quality in general. I'd still come back to Genki's again though simply for its convenient location and value. You can fill up a stamp card and get a free plate. It was kinda weird seeing chocolate cupcakes coming by on the conveyor belt too, haha. read more
