What happened to my son's favorite place to eat? Genki burger here at Maui Mall has gone bad. Ordered garlic chicken thinking it comes out piping hot. Gentle brings out half the order size and it's stone cold like it's be out for hours. Our Genki burger was missng it's secret sauce as well. Also waiting a half an hour for udon does not cut it with. People - this is conveyer belt sushi. In a strip mall. Is this the best sushi I've ever had? No. But not bad for cheap, convenient, and quick sushi. What you see is what you get. We are tourists just about to catch our flight back home, we were looking for a quick lunch near the airport before returning our rental car. This did the trick just fine. The servers were all incredibly nice and friendly. We ordered off the menu and our sushi came out in minutes. Had a couple plates off the conveyer belt as well. Everything looked pretty clean. I used to go to the Genki sushi at Maui Mall about once a week...I usually order my favorite spicy tuna dynamite & some other plates. ***UPDATE for 5/12/16 ***I did recently change my diet from raw fish to cooked proteins when it comes to sushi like crab, etc....& the manager ( I don't know her name, but she is on the Maui Visitor channel) kept trying to convince me to get the $5 black plates that I used to order in the past & I said no thank you & she told me some other RUDE things after I paid for the check. The servers used to always asks if I need a refill on my drink but not anymore...too bad the service here is getting to be low quality & class, I wish I could go into more details on how I was treated here, but because it's against the rules in the guidelines, so I can't...I used to really enjoy coming here & sadly I have to find a new place to have my weekly lunch. Terrible. Everything, service, food, selection, price. And it keeps getting worse, we keep saying we're not going back, but try to give them another chance, and get bummed out again. This time, my nephew wanted a kids meal, ipad said they were sold out... Yet you could order everything separately, Inari, ebi, tamago, Kani kama and calpico drink. We asked a waiter if we could order the kids meal, his response "oh, I don't know, I think we're out of something or something, let me ask her"..... Never comes back. We sub something else so my nephew can finally eat something. Also, tried to order salmon strips, salmon skin roll, teriyaki chicken bowl, green salad, ALL OUT.... really?!?!! Ended up getting a somen salad... Terrible, so few pieces of lettuce, sauce had no taste and the somen noodles were hard. Clearly the whole "assembly line" sushi thing is hot here in Hawai'i. I see Genki Sushi restaurants everywhere and usually I take that to mean it's not the greatest choice for a taste-filled meal (I mean, you see McDonald's on every block, that doesn't mean it's going to be an amazing experience). But on a recent trip to Maui, finding a highly rated sushi place was a lot more difficult than I'd anticipated. A friend of mine suggested we give it a try, saying that she liked it, and I agreed to go, despite not liking the reviews. The thing that quickly tipped me was the difficulty in just sitting down. When a few people walk in and clearly half the place is empty, it shouldn't take five minutes to seat them. I believe our waitress was Lauren, and geesh, she was coarse. Eating was generally easy when we could grab what we needed from the items moving past, but Lauren didn't check with us soon enough or often enough. My dad happened to be along for this meal and he did not enjoy it at all. The look of disgust across his face made it hard to really analyze my meal, since I was trying to find grub options for him to try that were anti-sushi. My friend and I ate as quickly as we could so that my dad was relieved from pretending to eat. Despite the terrible company (my father), the food wasn't terrible and I left satisfied. It still wasn't the most amazing sushi I've ever had (I dreamed of my sushi from back home) but I got to eat a greater variety than just a single roll and try some new things. If I truly need a sushi fix in the future, I know I'm going to shell out some money for something awesome but this was a nice, fast food sushi experience! read more

Originally started in Japan by Fumio Saito, he created the "kaiten sushi" concept and pioneered the use of the conveyor belt to serve sushi. Genki is popular place with Maui people with a wait of up to 20 minutes to be seated during lunch and dinner hours. Dual conveyor belts wind through the restaurant which they section off during slow hours. They offer counter or booth seating (which I prefer) and also have take-out. The staff is usually very attentive, asking what you want to drink or to place an "kitchen order". The sushi it self is pretty good for the price you pay. Nothing fancy. Only problem is that they only put out fresh rolls every so often. ...and that makes me nervous, especially with sushi.
