We came here after we visited out friends spot on a Saturday night. Let me tell you we havent had genki or sushi in awhile. We would go eat sushi atleast once a week since my whole little family LOVES sushi. All of us were so hungering we decided to just go to this location.The wait was kind of long. I think it was because they waste whole long booth tables for a party of 2. Like really?? When we finally got seated we ordered on the tablet quick. My first order was the salmon sashimi & let me tell you. I FOUND SOME KIND OF HAIR ON IT. IT DIDNT LOOK LIKE HAIR FROM YOUR HEAD, IT LOOKED LIKE HAIR FROM DOWN THERE. So i called over a coworker that i told & all she did was grabbed it fast & said "ohhhhh im sorry sorry" while already walking away to the back. Lucky i took a picture of it before she took it. That was just so bad. After that i checked all our foods before we ate it because i didnt want me kids to be eating that. We didnt just up & leave because we were all hungry & we leave in town & couldnt wait. The portion too seemed a bit smaller too. First time here. Read most of the bad reviews and almost didn't come. Was on the waitlist for about 25 min. I didn't mind. The place had a line and about half the restaurant was seated. Short staffed like the reviews said. As soon as we scanned the code for the menu we started ordering. The food seriously took no time at all. Everything tasted great and even tried some new things. It's been awhile since I've been to the Kaneohe location. The biggest change is that they no longer have the iPad-like ordering system. They now give you a QR code to scan with your phone. It takes you to a website where you can order your sushi and other items. It keeps a running tab of what you ordered which you can review. The wait staff was friendly and attentive and the food was fresh. No issues and we enjoyed dining there. Thumbs up! read more

This is usually one of my go to sushi places. Unfortunately it's been such slow service; we were told the staffing for the back of the house (the cooks/chefs) is understaffed. Now, we've had to rethink about going back. What I saw - There were two tables/parties in the restaurant, around 3 staff walking around servicing the two tables; there were many of us waiting outside to be seated. When we inquired why the long wait, that was what they told us. They also said there was a take out order that needed to be filled so once that was done, THEN they could seat us. (Three chefs in the back) About 10 minutes after that, the staff put up a sign apologizing the reason why the long wait. We asked again (because we were on the waitlist as #4) how much longer after the 3 parties before us would be seated, she said maybe 15 minutes; we had already been waiting 15-20 minutes prior. I've worked in the restaurant industry and understand being short staffed, but this has been happening for over 2 years, way after Covid. The manager needs to revamp his/her staffing and revise the priority to keep their business flowing with ease and grace. We ended up next door at the pho place, seated right away, ate and out the door within 30 minutes. When we came out, Genki Sushi has almost tripled in customers waiting outside. If you have absolutely nothing else to do but wait, this is the perfect place to hang out and catch up with your friends and family. If not, choose someplace else; there are quite a few small business that would love to have you join them for dinner! read more

two words: FOOD POISONING. Just spent the last 24 hours in immense pain throwing up violently. Haven't been to this place in years. I used to go regularly with my family growing up. The rice is always hit or miss. The service is inattentive and comes with a bit of attitude. Never used to be this way. I had an idea that food poisoning was a possibility at this place, I even mentioned it to my family during the meal. I've heard at least 5 people mention they got food poisoning from this place throughout my life. Just my luck. Its definitely a lot worse now. I'd say your chances are much higher of getting sick due to the constant turnover rate at this place. Definitely downhill since Aaron and Anthony left. My mom has been raving about Anthony, the server who works here. Last night we went to eat at Kaneohe Genki in Windward City Shopping Center where Anthony works. Anthony was one of many servers there but Anthony is exceptional because he is always pleasant, very helpful & enthusiastic. He is very polite and gracious and always makes you feel like a valued customer. Now I know why my mom loves having Anthony as a server. I'm giving Genki 4 stars not because they are the top end of sushi Hawaii is capable of offering but because they are consistent in their service through COVD. We pop in when we're hangry and service is fast friendly and efficient. I've read the reviews and think the low ones are a bit u fair so decided to write one to update my review. Yes--the portions may have gotten smaller but not like another place that closed up last year and went out of business. And be honest...you can get fed for pretty cheap here on a COVD budget--this means alot and they provide as much tea and water you want. They offer kupuna 10% discounts Sun through Thursday. They do offer small cups of shoga, Wasabi and shoyu--but you can ask for more. It isn't the high grade 100% fresh wasabi--but when you have sushi at less than $2 compared to fancier izakaya charging $12 I don't think you should complain about their Wasabi. If it's important I think the fair choice is to go to a different place or bring your own shoyu-shoga-wasabi. Is this where I would celebrate our wedding anniversary? No-but I don't mind popping in here once a week with hubby to skip cooking a meal. My faves are the seared spicy salmon- the spicy tuna bomb- the eggplant tempura and the tempura pumpkin. read more

I'm writing a review for just the bento special they have happening where you can choose sushi and a main dish. The sushi includes the basics: kappa kanpyo, inari, shinko, or California. You oils upgrade the sushi for spicy tuna or ahi poke for $1.50 more. The main dishes are either chicken karaage, garlic chicken, ika geso, or chicken katsu. The bento is only 7.99 so it's a deal! Only can do take out though. I would recommend because it's cheap and filling. There's a stamp card promotion going on for these bentos too until the end of May! Buy 7? Get one bento free! As for the other sushi, I haven't eaten there in years, but they updated it with the fun delivering Shinkansen train. The place looks cleaner and the cashier who helped me was really nice. read more

I used to advocate for Genki! I really thought it was great, especially in Kaneohe, simply because there aren't a ton of restaurants to eat at around town. The conveyor belt is exciting (though becomes less so over time) and the bullet train was great because let's face it, sometimes it's nice to interact with people as little as possible. Unfortunately, the magic, and most of what makes Genki special.. Is gone? The last two times I went to Genki, the conveyor belt was broken. What's the point if not for that? Also, there were months between both of these visits. However, the last time I went, we also realized that the prices went up a bit and the portions got smaller. The deep fried spicy bombs are the size of a man's thumb, I swear. Put your thumb next to it if and when you ever decide to go to Genki and order it. Over time, the spicy ahi tempura roll also downgraded to a fewer pieces and way less spicy ahi than years ago.. Has the quality gone up? Not that I recall. Also, they didn't have sauce bowls. You know, the ones you put shoyu and wasabi in? They just.. Didn't have them. I guess none of them were washed? We got miso soup bowls instead. Uhh.. I didn't know what I wanted to eat for lunch I didn't really didn't want to go into town so I said lets go eat sushi. They practice social distancing taking temperature at the door and sanitize after we finish eating and they also have it by the door before we sat down. Genki!!!!! What is going on!?!?!? My family and I were super stoked to dine at your place Monday night (6:30pm seating). We were given the booth table right next to the conveyor belt window going into the kitchen. I left with a headache. 1) The music was playing in the restaurant side just fine, smooth - family friendly music. Kitchen staff on the other hand had music blaring - I don't mind some rap music ok, I don't - but all the music coming out was non stop cursing, sexual references, beating up people heck even murder and just down right unwelcoming music. My children had to listen to this music in ADDITION to the music coming overhead. I have an older daughter - and she kept opening her mouth and saying - mommy why is that music cursing so much? why are they talking about so many violent things? mommy what does this word mean? mommy what does that word mean? So thanks kitchen staff - for having me to explain to my kids what ugliness the songs you were choosing to blare at top volume was all about. 3) No little bowls for mixing the wasabi and shoyu together, and no offers from our servers for them - we were so hungry we just used plates of other sushi plates to mix them on. 4) Wait staff did not seem to be super eager to be present on the job site. 5) Conveyor belts not operational, just the bullet trains. Not sure if they do that for weekdays on purpose because less people dine in then, but sure seemed the place was busy. Staff was great and store was clean - that's not the issue here. My wife and I got food poisoning from something we shared - either the nigiri assortment or the volcano spicy tuna roll. We think it was the nigiri plate because the fish was dried out (probably plated then refrigerated?) and the one piece I had (kanikama) tasted a little off. Not terrible, but enough for me to realize it wasn't fresh. My wife never complains about food but this time she did to me when we realized both of us had upset stomachs. No one else in our family got sick. I tried to call multiple times yesterday and today. No answer and today the mailbox is full. The service was friendly this time but has not been in the past visits at this location. The reason for the 2 stars is the food! I love Genki Sushi but this is by far the WORST LOCATION!!! The tempura rolls are either very dry or burnt. The fried chicken bowls are burnt. They sushi either has barely any sauce topping or drenched in it. I have given this location a few tries before giving this review because I understand not all chain restaurants will have a good day every day even tho they should since it's a restaurant relying on customer service but I will not be returning! read more

Its great that the hours have finally extended since Covid. However, there is no iPad ordering anymore. You need to scan a QR code to order. Not as user friendly and what if you don't have your phone or its dead? It was not more efficient and more of a hassle to order. Usually when you order, fried items take longer but when we went the last items we got was our sushi. It took really long, so long that I was wondering if my order went through but then we finally got it. Portions have gotten way smaller too. I wouldn't mind that because I understand rising costs but the new ordering system was pretty frustrating for us. Not sure why they did away with the iPads. No problem with the food quality or cost. Biggest issue was service, which was scattered/distracted. We probably spent 15-20 minutes longer here than we planned due to inattentive service. One of our items didn't come out and we had to remind the server to have the kitchen get it out to us. We finished all our food and then had this item come out 7 minutes after we were ready to pay and leave. Its been a long time since Ive been to a Genki Sushi. It was nice to see the unique changes they have made to the traditional belt fed, sushi delivery track. I appreciated the fact that I didnt have to wait for an item that may or may not make it to me on its way around the room. The tablet ordering system was super easy to use and food came out fairly quickly. The only thing I didnt like like was the fact that I could only order 4 items at a time. Not a big deal but having to make multiple orders was a little cumbersome. The sushi was good. About what youd expect from a place like this. I could see that a lot of the fish was previously frozen and not necessarily fresh on the daily. The seasoning was good as well but I did find that sweet chilli sauce was a little overkill on a few dishes. Overall, it aint no high end sushi spot but it will satisty your sushi craving in a pinch. read more

Now that we are fully vaccinated we are trying to get out there (responsibility) and enjoy some of the things we've missed over the last year. Genki has always been our go-to for a quick, easy, last-minute, sushi fix. It was good to be back! Genki is doing a good job with all of their COVID precautions. I stepped in the door to get my number (there is always a line for a table) and was asked to scan the QR code to complete the contact tracing form. When our number was called we showed the code from completing the form, had our temperature checked, and were directed to our table. They've installed plexiglass barriers between tables, The wasabi, shoyu, and ginger all served in little disposable containers. (Oh how I hate what this pandemic is doing to our single-use plastic problem!) And there is no longer a conveyer belt of sushi going by (they'd really done away with that pre-pandemic), instead, you use the convenient little tablet to place your order and the race car comes zooming down the belt to deliver your items. Two small suggestions I would make are to provide wipes so we can disinfect the table and wipe down our fingers. And It would have been nice to have covers on the plates of sushi as they come down the belt. OK enough about all of that, now on to the food. If I were comparing Genki to my favorite sushi place of all time would I give it *****? Maybe not. But I go to Genki to get simple, good, decently priced sushi. And that is exactly what they give me. Everything is fresh and tasty, the service is friendly, they have a nice selection and we got about 13 dishes for $42. That is a pretty good deal! read more

This is the first time I ate at a Genki Sushi after they had their "incident" a couple of years back. Well, it's pretty typical of a "fast food" sushi place in terms of quality... Mediocre at best. Some dishes just looked hurried and sloppy, while others (the spider roll) looked and tasted very good. The idea is innovative enough - order from your table on a tablet and the food comes out to you in a little bullet train. Or order was correct about 75% of the time, and there were a few hiccups in the ordering process. Lunch for two was about $50, which is typical in the area, but for higher quality food. The novelty of the ordering process and gimmick isn't enough to keep me coming back for more. read more

The wait was really long. I asked about it and one of the workers told me they're understaffed in the front and back (which is why they're only open in the afternoons). Well, it's not like they're the only business struggling to hire during the pandemic...so no can help. If you really want a seat, GET HERE EARLY, right when it opens. From what I can tell, they're very busy. Lots of customers coming in and out. The waiters work hard here and are very friendly. I always see em carrying all the plates to the back and wiping down the tables and tablets. Good service...quick to respond and kept refilling our drinks. I recommend the beach roll and unagi roll. Worst Genki Sushi I've ever been to. It's a Saturday night and we were seated pretty late, at 6:45pm. We were told by our waitor that our last call for food was to be placed by 7:05. If anything I absolutely hated that part of the so-called, "service". The person taking our order was very impersonal about it. I wasn't impressed by their dirty carts that the food rolled out on. The food was cold too.. I hope we don't get sick from this place. To end on that note, we witnessed one of the waitress consolidating all of the Wasabi from each table back into a storage container. The ambiance was not anything noteworthy. We just felt rushed. We waited longer than we spent ordering and hurriedly eating. I was thoroughly disappointed. I was on the Windward side and love Genki but I'll not be coming back here or recommending it to anyone either. I didn't even bother taking pictures. I felt too rushed. 3 Starts: This is a fun restaurant go to with family and friends. There's large booths and ample parking. During this pandemic the the staff is good about taking everyone's temperature before dining in and having customers fill out the contact tracing form. Our food arrived promptly after ordering on the tablet. Minus 2 Stars: I've watch a worker wipe down a table and... well... to put it plain and simple, it was "cleaned" half ass. A couple spritz and a quick wipe down. Seriously? At the time of checkout we asked the same worker who "cleaned" the table (heavy set, asian, local boy), to put our change into the tip container. He said, "ok". We excited the restaurant, but reentered shortly after to order takeout. I looked at the tip container and there was NO TIP in the container! This guy pocketed it for himself!!! Been to this Genki before and after Covid lockdown and I'm more than happy with the service here each time. Whether it's dining in or taking out, our orders are always quick and service is friendly. There is ample parking in the parking lot outside the restaurant, but it can get busy during lunch and dinner times. Genki, the king of kaiten style sushi dining in Hawaii brings its signature bullet express ordering system to the Windward City Shopping Center location and it's awesome! Simply place your order using the touch screen pad above your table and in minutes, your order is delivered to your table from the kitchen via a computerized race car. No need to wait for your favorite sushi to appear on the conveyor belt (although they still have sushi rotating on the belt for your convenience) or flagging down the wait staff. It wouldn't surprise me if the checks are higher with the bullet express, since it's so easy to get carried away with the ordering. Just be sure to keep your hunger pains in check and don't order more than you can eat. Their wait list is also computerized. Just tell the server the number of people in your party, and a ticket with a number is printed.
