Having been there a number of times & liking their bento's & Hawaiian food, I was tasting Hamburger steak at various eatery's comparing this dish and so far this is the blandish homemade patty & brown gravy I ever had!!! Even over the rice the gravy was tasteless. The Mac salad was different with tuna added. That was acceptable! Would not recommended this entree! We rarely visit Windward Mall but had to meet someone so decided to order food from this food court. Walked around and liked the selections of entrees here at Marukai Tei. They have 3 plate sizes, 14 "Entree Choices" and 4 "Side Choices". The "Entree Choices" list that has a "P" next to it on the menu means there's an additional charge of $1.65 more: 1. Mini: 1 Entree and 1 Side 2. Regular: 2 Entrees and 1 Side 3. Large: 3 Entrees and 1 Side Note: Difference in price for that extra side between the Regular and Mini and between Large and Regular is $2.50 each. The "Side Choices" are: 1. White Rice 2. Brown Rice 3. Chow Fun 4. Fresh Tofu My husband and I both chose the Regular. He ordered the Teri Hamburger, Beef Stew with White Rice. He said the Teri Hamburger was tasty. As for the Beef Stew, he wished the gravy was thicker. It was more like Hawaiian Stew but did mention that the meat was soft and both the potatoes and carrots were perfect! For him choosing rice was the best choice because both had gravy...yum! I ordered the Sesame Chicken, Chicken Squash with Chow Fun. I liked the sesame chicken...it kind of tasted like Mochiko chicken. I thought the Chicken Squash was good but a little too salty for me. As for the Chow fun, it didn't have too much taste. I love Chow Fun but I wouldn't order this again. When I was asked what Side I wanted, I asked what other sides do they have...she only mentioned Chow Fun. It was when I was typing this review and viewing the menu that I found it listed on the top left. Shucks, I would've chosen the tofu. Oh well, next time. They displayed 3 small pieces of potato tempura in a container and I asked if we had to buy all 3. She said they used to sell it per piece but now they sell it that way. The price was $5.80 which I thought was pricey but it was really good. I would order this again! Also ordered their macaroni salad. The menu stated it includes tuna, potato and carrots. The potatoes were missing and I could taste round onions because there was a bite to it which I liked but it had a sweet taste which I didn't care for. Do they add sugar or a sweetener? Lots of free parking here at Windward Mall, the servers were nice and they have a big dining area in this food court. The only thing that I didn't like was how yucky the tables felt. I asked a worker if she could clean it...she said no matter how many times they wiped it, the tables will stay sticky. After she wiped the whole table, she laid paper towels for me. Before I left, I was going to throw away the paper towels but it was stuck so I left them. A little while after, I passed the table and a guy was sitting on the opposite side of paper towels eating. I feel nostalgia played a part in me coming here... The chicken was ok but dry. Tasted like it was fried and left in the warmer for awhile. The Mac salad tasted like it had too much sugar in it. Was not feeling it. The shrimp tempura was 90% batter and the smallest shrimp I've ever seen. It was also as hard as a rock. Do not order this unless it's fresh. This was bad. Been at this establishment many times I guess I never did review . Well nowadays it's so rare to have Okazuya's still around . It's hard work waking up early to do prep work than closing while you sell out of everything than working late into the early evenings to prep for the next day. It's so sad because the next generation don't want to work so hard purchase over the business. That's why all the Okazuya's closes their doors . Well my favorite go to is their Maki sushi it reminds me of my mom' s sushi . It's very plain with shoyu tuna, red and green Ebi and with egg or Takuan (Radish). This place uses egg because Takuan is very expensive. My mom uses Takuan which was ono a little crunch to the sushi . These days the maki sushi is so fancy , with imitation crab , Avocado, cabbage or spam , Kanpyo. This Maki sushi at Maruki Tei is plain old school sushi . Food here is always good! Makes coming through the mountain so very worth the drive to the Windward side. So many okazuya options to choose from. I especially like the sesame chicken, mac salad and the shrimp tempura. That could possibly be my choice for last meal on earth, where my mom doesn't have to cook. Located in the food court at Windward Mall, there is ALWAYS a line at Maruki-Tei. Lines tell you the food is good. The mini bento was a great choice for me & my sis to share. Came here for a quick lunch. Located in the foodcourt of Windward Mall, this food stall is supposed to be serving Japanese food but if you look on to their menu they're mostly Hawaiian. Anyhow... Service is not good, the woman is grumpy and giving me attitude (coz I couldn't make up my mind on what food I wanna order on the spot), so partly my fault. She kept waving her head and make me feel uncomfortable even more. Anyhow... I got rice & chicken long rice - was good. Tasty and delicious. Rice is mushy and being an Asian it makes me sad. Lol. The chicken long rice on the other hand was good and it was seasoned well. This place is pretty popular as I've noticed long queues. The Food: Two choice - teri beef and sesame chicken with chow fun. The good: Teri Beef was awesome, it's always my go to and there's didn't disappoint. I like mine soft, sweet and salty, lots of sauce, and with some fat. It had all of that and made for a happy tummy. Now if you like the BbQ grill style teri beef, this isn't the one....this one is cooked and swimming in a load of teriyaki sauce. Also the sesame chicken was another winner.......sorta like a big thigh of mochiko chicken. The so-so: The chow function wasn't anything special. Not rally much flavor and a good thing I asked them to pour some teri sauce alllll over haha. So that made it better. The sorta surprise: be cautious of the (P) next to the entrees on the menu, as it's a premium and adds $1.50 to each premium choice. My fave teriyaki beef is a premium so was like whaaaa haha. Can expensive okazuya food be worth a 35 mile round trip drive? If you want maki sushi and other plantation foods (boiled shoyu chicken and teriyaki hamburger, miso marinated fried sesame chicken, sweet soy pork tofu etc) from a bygone era, heck yeah! Don't take my word for it, 30+ people in a line that stretches to the entrance of the mall food court during lunch speaks for itself. Straight to it, the reason in itself to go, the maki sushi. The su, sweeter than most using mild rice vinegar perfectly seasons the not to sticky rice. The filling, canned tuna cooked with more rice vinegar, sugar and seasoned with colorful dried shrimp, and crisp takuan. Together, a maki that I haven't tasted in 30 years that recalls bon dance food stalls. Yes, the sesame chicken is greasy, as is the tempura but that's flavor right? Yes, they use a lot of sugar. There's nothing wrong with protein candy. Yes, the inari (cone sushi) is unexpectedly not that good, bordering on salty. Yes, the prices are high. $8.50/roll of maki sushi. Regardless, one of the few places remaining where the people cooking the food (grandmas) actually grew up with the flavors and are not simply following a recipe handed down through the generations. I was bit disappointed with the quality of my catered order this year. I order a total of 3 trays for my party, the Nishime did not have many of the traditional ingredients and did not look like what is served on the line. The teri-hamberger was moist but the sauce was the biggest disappointment, lumpy like gelatin, it did not disolve when heated. I've order this dish at least the past years. Wow ! I don't know what I was expecting but their food exceeded my expectations ! I ordered the lau lau & poi & single piece of teri chicken (bone-in) & one order of shrimp tempura (2 pieces) and my son ordered the teri hamburger & boneless teri chicken plate with chow funn. Wow ! Everything really tasted homemade & cooked with so much aloha. The grandma that was helping us was very patient too because we had no idea that you have to specify boneless teri chicken if you want the boneless entree (which my son wanted). She picked out a very superb thigh (bone-in) for my entree order. Very pleased with the food here. The lau lau was hot, moist and had great portions of pork, butterfish & fat. The poi was a great choice to have available too ! The hamburger was moist & juicy and And to top it off, their prices are unbeatable for okazuya food imho. Maruki Tei has been one of my favorites since forever. My go to is usually the sesame chicken with a side of Mac salad. Recently came home in October and it was one of our first places we went to. I was so bummed, because man the prices went up!! I get it, inflation. This time around I ordered my same plate, but chose a mini. Also didn't get a Mac salad, because I knew it would've been more expensive. There was one person in front of me waiting to check out. An older woman came in front of her to order and the young girl at the register raised her voice and said you need to stand in line. The woman said nevermind and walked away. Although the woman shouldn't have cut, there are other ways to handle this. Maybe a softer and kinder voice? While waiting for the woman (who was helping me) to ring me up, that same young girl came and started using the register to help the guy after me, even though I was standing there waiting. Not sure if she wanted to help him because she was checking him out or because she wanted to move the line. Either way, it was rude. Back to the food. This was my mini I bought. My friend and I both got the bento and it was about $10. We were going to get the regular plate but this had more variety in it so we decided on it. The sesame chicken is basically mochiko chicken. It had good flavor but the breading was a bit soggy. The spam was good as it tasted like they added something to spruce it up. The tamago had some kamaboko and green onion inside it. The meatball was juicy and had a sweet flavor. On the bottom, about two-thirds was rice and one-third was chow fun. Rice was good and on the mushier side which paired well with the salty food. That is what happened to me on 3/6/23 at Maruki Tei with one of the clerks- and in front of my daughter, who I'm trying to teach politeness and aloha. Not easy in this day and age, mind you. So what happened? Upon leaving our kula at Windward Mall, we decided to grab lunch at Maruki Tei for the first time. My 2 year old's palate is very local and she is happiest with a spam musubi and noodles, which are two things that Maruki Tei offers. We were greeted by a lovely tūtū with Short silver hair who was so very polite and eager to take our order but started to send a woman who was confused about where the line began to go to the back of the line (which we all felt bad) and so we let her go in front of us- leaving the 'olu'olu tūtū to her while we were passed over to the not-friendly-lady... She greeted us with a "What do you want?" And as I began ordering a large plate lunch (has 3 entree choices and 1 side starting at $13.90) she just was rolling her eyes and really "terse" and I was taken aback because it was just really out of nowhere... I was not impolite, I used good manners using please and thank you with sincerity and she was just not returning it at all. I asked for rice (which, if not specifying brown - I think it's safe to assume it's white... I'm old-school like that I guess). She just "WHAT kind rice?! White?! BROWN - WHAT?!" With the RUDEST tone and biggest attitude. I ordered chicken long rice and she just was throwing stuff around, tossing it on the plate clearly irritated. I asked my husband what his 2nd choice was which he said Teri beef because it certainly LOOKED like Teri beef (nothing is marked with names) and she got all pissy and was like "There IS NO TERI BEEF!" And so I said "I'm sorry- Teri hamburger than" (which there was) and my husband asked if the katsu there was fish katsu or chicken and the other lady replied "chicken katsu". I asked if they had a teriyaki spam musubi and she obviously hadn't heard the part where I said "spam" and stopped, deliberately rolled her eyes and huffed "WHAT KIND OF MU- SU- BI??" At that point, I had enough of her rudeness to me and in front of my child and I asked her "Am I inconveniencing you? I don't want to inconvenience you because it seems like that's what we're doing. A teriyaki SPAM musubi- do you have that? The items there are not labeled." And she changed her tune just slightly saying "people ask for musubi but there are several different kinds of musubi there!" And so I said "Yes, and I'll have the teriyaki spam musubi if you have it, thank you". The other lady seemed very embarrassed by her rude coworker and was most obviously trying to make up for it by thanking us for coming. I'm a glutton for punishment and still wanted to try the assorted mixed tempura. My husband, who is Chinese and has dealt with curt attitudes throughout his life simply laughed saying "Wow, she was a little pake" (rude)... which was an understatement. They also were only taking cash and the line was not long. For the record, my toddler scarfed down the chicken long rice and my husband really liked the chicken katsu. The Teri beef HAMBURGER was good but just slightly too sweet for me, though prepared well and not dry inside. The tempura, like other reviews mentioned, was a whole lot of batter and very little filling which is a little deceptive in my personal opinion. The teriyaki spam musubi was okay according to how much my toddler ate of it but she preferred the long rice. I would show grace to the pake clerk and come here again but if I have a similar experience the next time around, I will probably leave the plate half-filled and take my business elsewhere. I really hope they remind staff of the importance of Aloha spirit- especially when there are so many other options and eating out is a luxury that not everyone can afford comfortably right now. read more

Five stars. Good old fashioned okazuya foods at the Windward Mall in Kaneohe. They have a variety of to go foods, such as small and large bentos, different types of spam musubi, hot ready to go foods, also foods that you can order from the menu. On this visit, I had the small bento. It had mochiko chicken, a small hamburger steak (very cute), a slice of kamaboko, a slice of sweet scrambled egg, chow fun noodles, and of course, white rice. All that food, jam packed into a clear bento container. Overall, no complaints of the bento foods. The mochiko chicken was delicious, the small, but cute hamburger steak patty brought back fond memories of past nostalgia, the kamaboko and egg was always good as ever, and the chow fun noodles and white rice were great. Meanwhile they serviced the person in the back of me who ordered the rest of the sesame chicken so i didn't have for the other two plates. Convenient okazuya in Windward Mall. Great comfort food from a longstanding Kaneohe food establishment. Understand that this is an okazuya, so the food quality is better at the beginning of lunch time when the food hasn't been in the warmer as long. That's with most if not all other okazuyas. Also, the selection dwindles down the later you get there (not as many bentos). The line can get long around noon, but the workers are very nice. Most times, I will get a Sweet Potato Tempura, a Combination sushi roll (2 pieces each of imitation crab, tuna maki sushi, and inari [cone] sushi), and a plate lunch. I was really surprised by the Pork Pumpkin (Kobocha)... It's like Pork Tofu, but with cooked pumpkin... I got a mini plate to try it out...mmm... not too salty and not too sweet...wow... It was so good that I went back the next day and got a Regular sized plate! The pumpkin was nice and softly well cooked so that it absorbed the flavors of the sauce! We got hamburger steak and mochiko chicken. Super soft and tender the hamburger steak was, good flavor too. Mochiko wasn't bad too, only get 1 piece but decent size and was good. Slight crunch on edges and a slight sweet taste but not very sweet. So if you wanted a premium add on your mini goes from $8.xx to $10.xx 2 premium on 2 choice from $10.xx to $14-15 And no longer give side Mac. Its a premium add on for the small side container at $1.75? Sadly I understand they gotta do what they need to survive. I'm sure the rental is getting high there plus cost of products going up. The menu has a lot of local style with chow funn, teri beef, hamburger steak - okazuya/ bento/ musubis offerings. Foods okay.... shrimp tempura batter tasted a little sweet, almost like a cornbread sweetness, not my thing. Chow funn lacked that local flavor (If you know, you know), hamburger steak was tender, gravy was yummy, meat itself was alright. $2.05 side order of chow funn, for a half of a small container. $3.50 for one small piece of hamburger steak $2.50 for one piece shrimp tempura It seems like a good deal separately, but c'mon of course you're gonna eat more than just one piece of shrimp! Serving portions is a disappointment and you have to buy mac salad separately. 1 piece serving entrees...Wow?! So I ordered the 2 entree choice, Teri hamburger steak/ shoyu chicken. Teri hamburger was awful! It was not marinated well and the meat inside was plain. Shoyu chicken was ok It was a turnoff already when I found out, I had to pay for the mac salad separately. Born and raised in Hawaii...all the plate lunches I ate growing up always came with mac salad as a complimentary side order. I'll be sticking to the Loco Moco restaurant and other eateries. I wouldn't even give them any stars. So, sad when you are a long time customer and you get overcharged. They had a special for Teri beef plate $11.45. Auntie who been there long time tells me she gotta charge me premium and I ask why it's on special then she said no this way cheaper. Actually it came out to $13.35 for that Teri beef plate. She charged me $10.35 plate and 2 times premium $1.50 ea. she kept telling me is cheaper. When I remembered to take picture of the sign they took it down. read more

This is probably my favorite place in the Windward Mall food court. I've enjoyed all of the things I've tried here, so it's my go to when I cannot decide. There is a nice selection of dishes to choose from and you can either order it plate lunch style or okazuya style. There are pros and cons for either way you chose. As I've said before, I've never had something I didnt like here, but it is pretty pricey for the sizes. The most recent time I visited, I ordered a regular size drink, 1 piece of inari, and a mini chicken & squash plate. This costed just about $13. I posted a picture of it. (Btw, this plate only had 3 medium diced size pieces of chicken and a lot of squash, smh)I could have gotten a full size plate at other places for that price. Just because it's good, that doesn't mean you should gouge prices. There's always somewhere better. I'm still giving 4 stars though, only because, like I said, the food is good, and I can depend on that when I'm at the mall, and want a fast meal. read more
