I can't even start to say how bad this sandwich was. The bread was chewy and not in a good way. The meat, dry, chewy and flavorless. The mushrooms, from a can. Onions, barely there. I read the reviews only after my visit since I came upon this venue on my walk between the airport terminals to the gate of my next flight. This spot is in a food court right before you enter gates A and B at PHL airport. Menu is simple with your choice of a plain steak, cheesesteak, or roast pork sandwich. You can also get a side of regular or cheese fries. They also have a few beer options in addition to some fountain soda drinks. It seems wait time and service have improved. The line moved quickly and I got my Philly cheesesteak (with diced/cooked onions and cheese choice of cheese whiz) within 5 minutes of ordering. It was about $16. Unfortunately they charge extra for other toppings so I can see how this could have easily been a $20+ for a footlong Philly cheesesteak sammi. I haven't had the original to compare it to but this was tasty and had a nice mix of savory (cheese whiz and thin sliced steak) and sweetness (cooked onions) with a nice soft chew for their sandwich bun. Big enough to feed 2 people. They placed a sheet of wax paper on the opening to help keep in the melted cheese whiz and preventing it from making the paper wrap soggy. My hopes weren't very high, as I've had higher quality cheesesteaks before and wanted to try one of the more "touristy" attractions while waiting for my next flight. The good - ordering and receiving food happened very timely. Lot of good customization options on the kiosk. The steak/bread itself wasn't bad, I was a little hung over so this greasy sandwich was what my body needed lol. The cheese wiz I thought was good as well and onions were my favorite part of the meal lol. Nothing stood out but still enjoyed nonetheless. The bad - the price and the portions. Small sandwich, not a lot of meat, definitely would explore other options than spending 18$ on a small cheesesteak. Let's be clear, this is an airport cheesesteak, and airports are where good restaurants go to die. Philadelphia is a great food city but its airport is no exception. On one of my more recent layovers through PHL I walked for 40 minutes out of my way to hit up one of my favorite local spots for their Italian Roast Pork sandwich and it was horrid. Geno's is an institution in the city of brotherly love, but a quick look at the star rating for the Airport Geno's played to my worst fears. However, taking a deeper dive into the reviews, I was filled with a sense of hope. Perhaps they have been able to turn it around. And when I strolled past the higher rated cheesesteak option nearby, the grill looked sad. So I took a chance on the place and was rewarded with a tasty steak made with care. To be fair, it's probably closer to a three star steak. But the airport Geno's is getting a bonus star for being in the airport with a captive hungry audience and working hard to try and maintain standards against seemingly impossible odds. What some folks may not realize is that Geno's does cheesesteaks differently from what many come to expect from the form. Instead of shaved steak that has been chopped up on the griddle, Geno's carefully lays out thin steak slices on the griddle and lays those whole tender slices in the bun. It would look like more meat if it were all chopped up, but it's a commitment to quality. Chopping up beef gives it more nooks and crannies and gives the impression of a greater volume of meat. However, it can also help to obscure tougher lower quality beef. This standard is held high at the airport location. Big props. While I'm generally opposed to kiosk ordering, thanks to the Geno's kiosk I was prompted to remember I could add cherry peppers on the side of my steak. Having a hit of heat and acidity really helps to refresh one's palate when chowing down on an unconscionable quantity of beef and cheese. As far as I'm concerned, this is the best airport cheesesteak at the moment in Philadelphia. There is room for improvement, and I would highly encourage folks to visit the original locations in town. But should I find myself back in Philly for a layover, and if my doctor hasn't forbidden me from eating such things, you'll likely find me at Geno's. read more

I'm mainly giving this a 3 because I haven't eaten in Philadelphia before, so this has no real comparison good or bad. If I ever do get to visit Philly proper, I'd love to know some favorite cheesesteak spots. :) Speaking of, I went classic on the cheesesteak here, only replacing the onions with peppers. It was a good sandwich and I have no complaints, nor do I have complaints about the employees. This is a fine choice for a layover in Philly. But because this is Philly, the cheesesteak will obviously be something travelers will go for. So there is always an argument about who makes the best Philly cheese steaks. Geno's is directly located across from Pat's Steakhouse. Both are a unique experience and both usually have a line around the block. Geno's is a bright orange store, open all the time. There is bench seating and a cool vibe do the colors. Parking is literally impossible. You have to drive around and around to get a spot. The shop host cheese steaks that are strips of steak rather then chopped meat. What stands out here is the bread which is super soft and makes the sandwich excellent. The staff is not always friendly. They seem annoyed and impatient. But, it kind of makes the experience whole in some crazy sort of way. I like Geno's. I do. I am always willing to stop here and grab a sandwich when in town. read more
