Was a patient for well over a decade. The quality of experience and care began to decline around 2022 or so but I stuck it out for nearly three more years hoping things would improve. The office staff became progressively less helpful to the point of seeming to not care at all. The dentist also became unpleasant and unhelpful. She would not give clear answers to questions or would attempt to change the subject to avoid further questions usually by deflection. She often got defensive when asked basic questions and preferred to imply the patient was to blame for items she overlooked. Then she stopped listening to my concerns altogether and offered up advice she knew to be incorrect/unnecessary; she was my dentist for a couple years at this point so should know certain things about my dental situation. The final straw was when she lied to me yet again; this time she claimed x-rays were taken when they were not, she hadn't even looked at the tooth. After choosing to leave, I briefly spoke with the two office workers who made it clear they didn't really care about my negative experience either. In the end, I lost one tooth as a direct result of what I believe was negligence for which the Dr. tried to blame me. I lost another that may have been salvageable had she listened. Side mention for another dentist who was nothing short of a jerk and seemed to make an extraction more difficult than necessary. I once recommended this practice wholeheartedly and was highly satisfied. Now it's zero stars and I would never recommend any practice even associated with this name again. read more

I showed up today for an appointment that was scheduled in June only to be told my appointment doesn't exist.....I took time off work for it....i even called less than 30mins to my appointment to confirm only for me to get that and the desk lady says she never spoke to me, that my appointment doesn't exist....Something is not right; I see this is something that happens often at this location....I just don't understand why nothing is organized....wasting people's time is a very weird and unprofessional thing to do. I'm disappointed but had to reschedule another day of which I have to take the time off again; who knows I might show up again and it doesn't exist.....don't bother giving them business. read more

When I started seeing them everything was okay and one day I showed up for a cleaning and they said I didn't have an appointment even though I had it on my schedule on my iphone. Second the ladies at front desk never call you back. Third I was quoted one price for dental work and 2 weeks later I was then quoted 9,000$ more for the same work. I have been a patient for almost 20 years - love the hygienist Lisa, but the customer service at the front desk is non-existent. I just sat in the waiting room for a half hour after my appt time with the doctor - no communication that the DR was running late or an apology. So I told them to cancel that and all future appts and thanks for wasting my time and left. I'll take my business elsewhere. This isn't the first time either - they seem to have poor time management there. If I showed up a half hour late - they wouldn't take me. But its ok to waste my time. Nope. I have been coming to this location for over ten years. I get the COVID impact and have been very understanding. The problem is that they cancel your appointments (or never book them in the first place) and you don't find out until you show up for the 6-month cleaning and then learn that you don't have an appointment and that their next available is in 5 months. You end up dealing with a receptionist who shows zero compassion or empathy and just tells you to transfer to another practice. I've had this happen here before and have waited the 5-6 months to get in but I'm actually going to take the person's advice and move my care elsewhere - hopefully to a practice that can actually function at a baseline level by booking appointments and communicating with patients. *DISCLAIMER* The orthodontic scheduling and providers are fantastic but they operate entirely independently. I went here for an exam and the dentist was very very nice and incredibly informative. I went back for my cleaning and the hygienist was rough, unfriendly, and un-thourough. I am going elsewhere for my next cleaning! My boyfriend goes here and he is getting a ton of work done! The receptionist/schedulers ALWAYS mix up his times and always make him wait forever, even if he gets there early or on-time. If we had more money, we would not still be going here. I had 3 wisdom teeth removal in this practice. Not sure if it's just me so lucky or something went totally wrong during procedure, but the nerve got damaged during lower tooth removal and I lost sensitivity in my lips and chin. Also there are 2 sharp bones still left there what is very disturbing and painful. When I went to a follow up visit, doctor suggested just to wait and see if they become covered with tissue with time (?!). Going to find another oral surgeon to fix it. read more

I went to Gentle Dental because a friend recommended them. They took x-rays no problem, then when the doctor came in, Gupta, she quickly said I needed a root canal. Of course I said no way because I'm not in pain. Then she said we will need to pull the tooth. I asked why. She said the roots are rotted. I said I'll wait for them to finish, I'm not in pain. I can't deal with tooth pain just to let you know. She then said I will need a deep cleaning because my gums have gaps. If they did I would know because my teeth would hurt. They are just trying to get money out of anyone they can. It's wrong on so many levels to make people go through what they don't need to just make money. Sorry you can't afford your yacht anymore but that's not my problem. Stop lying to your patients. read more

I had my teeth cleaned last week at another company/dentist. I was very surprised, not really, after the dentist finished the examination, cleaning, and told me there were no issues with my teeth. On the other hand, Gentle Dental, six months earlier, found $1,200 worth of problems. This further reinforces my previous review of Gentle Dental and their money making business practices....I mean "thievery" practices. The New patient offer for $57 was attractive, however after the X-Ray analysis, I have been told that I have to undertake the following procedure for healthy teeth. $1600 for the 8-9 tooth cavities Gum Treatment for some teeths [Haven't estimated] Might Be Root Extraction which was later denied by the ORTHO surgeon. I was so scared with the pricing and all, so I thought to have a second opinion from other Smiles By Rosie dental clinic. Although the appointment is not that easy there, however I am going for a full treatment for around $1100 for filling, deep cleaning and all. Also the place is very calm and Dr. Rosie is very informative. I would recommend "Smiles By Rosie" in Somerville to my friends, family and everyone. read more

I contacted Gentle Dental a couple of weeks ago because my gums are receeding. I got really nervous about one of my teeth falling out so I immediately started looking for a place to go. Like a lot of people, I waited until it got bad to look for treatment. I sent out a burst of emails and immediately received a response from Beth the office manager. She told me that I'd already taken the first step to saving my tooth and that we could set me up with a free consultation with their gum specialist Dr. Adler. I made my appointment for the next day. After I met with Dr. Adler (SO nice and seeing how nervous I was prescribed a low dose of anxiety medication) I made an appointment with one of the general dentists (I forgot his name). The appointment went very well, with the xrays and the exams. I have an appointment to go back for my deep cleaning in a couple of weeks and I'm not as nervous as I was taking the first step. Two months ago, I was laid off. One of the things I was most nervous about was the fact that I don't have dental insurance and I was certain the cost to fix my mouth would be ridiculously high. For the initial exam/xrays there is a new patient special of $57 - totally affordable. And while the office doesn't take payment plans on the work, they were very open about a couple of options I had in order to get my mouth back into good health. The whole team from the first moment I walked in until I left the exam made me feel so comfortable. They all know what they are doing - and they were extremely friendly to my brother who accompanied me to the appointment. I'm sure I'll revise the rating once I've had my deep cleaning done in a couple of weeks. UPDATE: The deep cleaning was good, the periodontist extremely knowledgeable. What rubbed me the wrong way was the discount I was supposed to get for writing a review. It was like it was never promised. Do what you say you're going to do. read more

It's important to me to feel comfortable with my doctors -- especially with regards to dentist, because let's be honest: if you have perfect teeth, cleanings are still a chore, and if you DON'T, then it's even worse! I've been to Gentle Dental three times so far. The first was to get the exam and x-rays done, and I have to admit, I was a little worried. The hygienist who did my x-rays scraped up my gums on the roof and floor my mouth by roughly placing the digital x-ray device, and, at one point, knocked it right out of my mouth by accident! If I hadn't reacted by opening my mouth to let it get yanked out, I worry I might have chipped a tooth... which, while I suppose would have been the place to have that happen, I wouldn't want anyway. She'd sworn after she knocked it out, and the swearing itself wasn't concerning (albeit unprofessional), but her demeanor was unsettling. At that point, I wasn't so sure about this. Their prices seemed really reasonable, and I did need to find a new dentist, but yikes... But then Dr. Ma came in and she was GREAT! One thing I can't deal with at the dentist office is being made to feel awful about the state of my teeth. I swear they're not THAT bad, but I should take better care of them, and it makes me feel nothing but shamed when I get scolded as a grown adult. When I told her that, and then possibly more than she ever wanted to hear about my life (sorry, doc) she was really considerate and made me feel so much more at ease. So I came back in for my second visit to get one small filling, which ended up being a) smaller than predicted and b) less expensive than it was supposed to be, so that was nice! And Tuesday, I came in to get one more done, and it was also a surprisingly pleasant procedure. I can't express I am so happy with my dentist, Dr. Ma! She makes me feel really at ease and is super friendly, and constantly made sure that I felt comfortable. If I could just see her all the time, that'd be A-OK with me. I can't completely give it five stars because of that x-ray thing, but I've had much worse and the price is right. read more

Gave this place another chance because now, with the pandemic, crowded waiting rooms are no longer an issue. Had a great cleaning/exam and my insurance paid the whole bill. Got a bill in the mail (from Gentle Dental Wakefield) last week, charging me a $10 "COVID fee" from my already-paid-for cleaning. Seriously? No one mentioned that I would have to pay for the staff's PPE!! Do hospitals charge patients extra to pay for their gowns and gloves? Of course not. As the name reads "Gentle" they are truely gentle from xrays to cleanings and a root canal I felt relaxed and comfortable no pain. Everyone i have encountered were great. I spent the past 5 years in graduate school with no dental insurance. Needless to say, once I started working I went to the dentist immediately. I was a little concerned and frankly, embarrassed, that it had been so long. The staff at Gentle Dental in Malden couldn't have been more friendly and less judgmental. And I was right to go, I needed a lot of work. Most worrisome were some scalings (root planning or deep cleaning) to remove years of tartar buildup. A note on my first visit. Dr. Payne was absolutely great, ironic name aside. She was friendly, and did not chide me about my past dental care in the slightest...not that I had much control of that without insurance. But back to the scaling. Posts online say this is a painful procedure, leaving swelling, bleeding and generally requiring pain relievers. The manager of Gentle Dental made me a bet. If I hurt at all, I would have the procedure paid for. I promised in return that if it didn't, I'd make a post here. Obviously, she won much to the dismay of my wallet. After the short-lived Novocaine wore off, I felt no pain. I didn't even feel a bit of sensitivity. During the procedure, Lisa, the hygienist, was talkative and friendly, keeping me relaxed and informing me of everything she was doing at the same time. The Novocaine injections didn't even sting! I have a few more procedures to go there (including wisdom teeth extraction...gulp!), but I'm honestly more excited to get everything back into shape and not the slightest bit worried about pain. I have been going to G.D, for a few months (my kids have been patients there as well), I am a huge denta-phobe, but I need to share my experience. The girls at the front desk are so warm and greeting you by name and are happy to see you. Very welcoming. They get it. Rose, the Dr's assistant is so reassuring. She sensed my fear and put my mind at ease, offered her hand, and didn't leave my side other than to do her job to help things run smoothly. Dr. Spivak was my Dr., and at first when I arrived at this appointment, I said to myself, I am not coming back (fear), but at the end of my appointment, Dr. Spivak had my mind changed. She is compassionate of her profession. She gives you her all. And she is very reassuring all will be well, and I have more knowledge now of what I need to accomplish and I trust her honesty. She explains every procedure thoroughly . She makes you feel like you are her only patient of the day, and her accent only make her more endearing. She makes you feel special. And her assistant Rose is very professional and puts your mind at ease. She is beyond customer service as well. They both make a great team. They put the Gentle in Dental. Took my daughter here for wisdom teeth removal. We had gone to the Wakefield office a few times but the surgery was being done in Malden. First of all, the surgeon was a real tool. Never introduced himself (my daughter met him, I had not). She was very nervous about being put under, as she is 15 and he said why are you crying, just stop! I should have said then, let's go and taken her elsewhere. My insurance paid 900 and the remainder was up to us. We were told 1700.00 was what I would owe. Her teeth were impacted and they knew this. The surgeon came out after and said, it was more impacted than I thought so it's more money. 400.00 MORE! He then said, pay the receptionist and we'll bring her out when she wakes up. The receptionist was very apologetic about the surprise bill but it had to be paid. Fast forward 4 day's and her mouth is still bleeding. I call Wakefield and they say bring her in. While feeling around her very sore mouth, they find the dentist had left a part of the tooth in. Ummmm, WHAT? I paid 400.00 "extra" for you to get to this hard to reach tooth yet it was left in? Once they got the piece of tooth (dentist NOT surgeon), she felt immediate relief. Last week, I took my oldest daughter to New England Oral Surgery and OMG what A huge difference. This place was awesome and 1/2 the price (for impacted teeth). Let her stay in a recovery room for close to an hour, whereas GD told my other daughter they needed the room and she had to leave. So, long story, but AVOID this place. $3000.00, tooth still left in and complete jerk of a surgeon. I wouldn't take my MIL to this place, let alone someone I loved!! read more

I agree with others on here in that their practices are a bit "iffy." 1. One of my teeth was giving me a bit of pain when I bit down on it. I was told I needed a crown and was pushed to have it ordered right away. I resisted and told them I needed more time to save up the money. The crown was going to cost $400. 2 months later I go back to the same Gentle Dental, see another dentist who tells me that the crown isn't necessary. Update: that tooth gives me no problems now whatsoever and no work was done on it 2. The dentist accidentally left the cotton in my mouth and sent me home! My gums were numb and I didn't feel it wedged between my gum and cheek at all. I found it only because I was curious as to why one side of my face looked puffier than the other. I called the office to complain and the receptionist told me, " Well, at least you didn't choke on it." No apology offered. 3. Getting a filling is absolutely awful. The dental assistant continuously sprays ice cold water on the tooth. I asked why the water has to be so cold. I was told it was because the drills they use generate a lot of heat. Well, invest in some tools that don't overheat, instead of torturing my mouth with freezing water! I've had cavities filled before without the water being ICE cold. 4. Twice before leaving the office I have asked to pay off my entire balance. I pay and the receptionist assures me that everything has been paid off. And then 3 weeks later I get a bill in the mail! So I just don't trust them at all and there is nothing Gentle about Gentle Dental. read more

My first visit was pretty frustrating. Took 3 visits to get my teeth cleaned, xrays taken and a filling done. This could have definitely been done in 1 or 2. Since then my visits have been pretty standard. Couple fillings done, lots of Novocaine despite not wanting any. Not alot of pain, and a pretty nice staff. Cleanings were always an enjoyable experience. I even requested a different type of cleaning that isnt standard, and they were happy to oblige. Regular calls to remind me of my appointments are great as well. Today was pretty excellent though. I had the pleasure of working Minakshi Gupta and her assistant Shannon. WOW, they were great! Minakshi was understanding, funny and gentle. Also, she respected my wishes to not use too much Novocaine! My gums and lips just got their feeling back after only 4 hours. I feel like in the past, it's taken alot longer. Didn't feel a thing for any of the fillings. Minakshi was able to knock out (6) fillings in under an hour. She even did one for free, because it was unplanned. She did the bite test multiple times as well, making sure that my bite felt comfortable. For the first time in a long time, I might be able to get away without a followup visit to adjust the fillings!! Shannon did a great job as well! Thanks to both Shannon and Minakshi!! Hope to work with you both again. Update 3/5/18: Minakshi crushes it again! Now ranking as the Cavity queen of Malden in my oppinion. 4 more fillings today, all went great. Quickly done with minimal discomfort. Novocaine wore off relatively quickly and now for the SECOND time in my life I dont believe Ill need a filling adjustment. Seems like a small thing, but if youre a busy person its very helpful. read more

I've been going me and my wife to this dentist and the doctors were really professional and felt comfortable dealing with them. however, the front desk staff are rude and they don't care about insurance coverage and they never explained to us what is really going on. I was clear with my needs and requests but they were just really bad in hearing and understanding my needs. I was surprised to see so many negative reviews. I've had to have a lot of dental work in the last few years, and I hate needles, so going to the dentist makes me quite anxious. I've been going here since 2012 and had everything from simple cleanings to root canals/crowns and gum surgery. I started with Dr. Payne; all of the crowns she has done fit perfectly the first time around, no issues. Lisa did my perio cleanings and they were very thorough. She is also informative and knowledgeable about your home care, future treatments, etc. She and Dr. Payne are both very nice and calming as well. Recently I had a very old crown fall off and was nervous to see someone other than Dr. Payne. I agreed to see Dr. Mayer on an emergency basis. She was very nice and confident of her assessment, so I had my treatment with her. She told me all of the "worst case" scenarios, but said she truly didn't think we would get to that point. I was praying she was right because the other procedures would have sent my bill soaring to over $2K. When she finished with me, I was so happy to hear I just needed a regular crown, there was no further damage to the tooth or anything crucial. The crown was not inexpensive; crowns have really gone up in price over the last few years but I'm happy to have saved the tooth and not resort to an extraction. Dental services are expensive, no matter where you go, but they happily discuss their prices and they've always been accurate. No hidden charges or upselling have ever happened to me here. I've also told them the kind of budget I'm working with and what I'm willing to do/not do and they were fine with that. I also feel that if you follow the instructions for proper care of your teeth at home: the flossings, regular cleanings, etc., and after-care once you've had a procedure, you can stay ahead of the game. Too many people wait until their teeth are abcessed, gums bleeding profusely, major cavities, etc., and if that happens, yes, the cost is going to be high to fix this kind of damage. I know not everyone has dental insurance, but I would be so much worse off if I couldn't go to Gentle. read more

I have been going to the Gentle Dental in Malden, because I liked my dentist there. However, receptionist is super rude (how they answer the phone, too) and they don't care about you or your money !! I decided to switch the dentist. They don't accommodate with your insurance (they don't care !) and they just don't care how you are treated. You will be happier going to another dentist. People are nice there but it is little bit greedy. I went to a big hospital that doctor mentioned I don't have much problems with my teeth, just clean and deep cleaning should be fine. And Gentle Dental suggested me to root canal 4 teeth and crown 2 teeth. When I mentioned another hospital was telling me that I don't need such work. They just say those are not professional.......... So your small clinic is more professional than big name hospital... I was fool to believed that and now I regret the crown teeth (which I might not need the service)... I would try few more clinics for opinions before I do anything next time. read more

I switched to this location after going to Gentle Dental's Chelmsford, then Methuen locations. The prices are reasonable, they bill my dental insurance directly with no problems. I am able to get evening or weekend appointments which work great with my busy schedule. The staff and doctors were nice. I will return for future work. read more

BEWARE! I only gave one star because I couldn't write this review without a star. On 9/15/17 I went to Gentle Dental for a cleaning, my top front tooth had a crown and root canal previously (drilled through the tooth it appears there was nothing left of the tooth) On 9/18/17 I was eating and the tooth broke at the gums with the remainder of the tooth inside the crown. The closest appt. I could get was 9/26/17. I believe there was too much pressure put on the tooth during the cleaning, I believe this fractured my tooth. I told Dr. Paine that she should repair the tooth and she agreed that she would replace it with a post & crown. When main office found out, they refused her replacing with post & crown. One of their Endodontists examined my teeth and gave an unreal diagnosis, he wanted to pull perfectly good teeth for outrageous amounts of money. They also said I needed another crowned tooth replaced due to a cavity. Result is I found a 5 STAR dentist who I went to for a consultation, I brought my XRays from Gentle Dental, he reviewed - I DID NOT have a cavity, therefore, NO REPLACEMENT needed. As for the crown that broke, with the remainder of the tooth inside the crown, I managed to remove the tooth from the crown and brought to this new dentist. He put a new post and used the original crown and repaired my broken tooth. Another fact, when you go to Gentle Dental you don't always get the same dentist, my wife has had 4 or 5 different ones over several years, they seem to leave or transfer to other offices. Better to see a doctor who has his own practice, they take better care of you and are more honest. Don't get ripped off on procedures that are not needed. BEWARE! read more

4 wisdom teeth removed and 3 crowns later I am still here in Methuen :) The staff is amazing and I have never been so happy with the work. I started at the Gentle Dental in Burlington then moved and transferred to Methuen. I am about 20 miles away and will not go anywhere else. The prices are very reasonable and I am quite pleased with the work. My smile is better than I could have imagined. It has been over three years now definitely worth it.
