Hidden Gem in Tempe, Arizona! My sister and I visited this restaurant yesterday, Saturday, August 29, after seeing it featured by a food reviewer on TikTok, and we are SO glad we decided to try it! This newer restaurant is located in Tempe, Arizona, in a shared parking lot next to several other businesses, including Dunkin' Donuts and a sub shop. When we walked in, there was open seating, so we were able to choose our own table. It wasn't crowded at all, which made for a very relaxed and enjoyable experience. The restaurant has only been open for about a year, and from the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was welcoming. The music was great, the décor was nice, and everyone we encountered was friendly, kind, and down-to-earth. Our waitress, Tam, was absolutely AMAZING! She was personable, attentive, and gave us some really great recommendations on both food and drinks. And let's talk about the HAPPY HOUR! They offer happy hour EVERY DAY from 12 PM-4 PM, including weekends! That was a huge bonus for us because so many restaurants don't offer weekend happy hour. We definitely wanted to take advantage of it since this was our first visit. Here's what we ordered: Belgian Waffle & 3 Fried Chicken Wings -- The waffle came with whipped cream and a strawberry on the side. Delicious! Happy Hour Dance Basket -- $8 -- Fried okra, French fries, and onion rings. We added lemon pepper seasoning on top, and it was SO good! Fried Catfish Basket with Chicken Wings & Fries -- Another great choice! Mocktail -- We were also able to enjoy a complimentary drink because an extra one had been prepared for us, which was such a nice surprise! One of the highlights for us was meeting one of the cooks who was working in the back. The interaction honestly made us feel like we were back home in the Midwest, like one of our own family members was in the kitchen cooking for us. That type of genuine hospitality is hard to find! They are open very late, until 4 AM, which is another great option if you're looking for somewhere to grab food late at night. They also have Soulful Sundays starting at 3 PM, with specials featuring items like jerk chicken, oxtails, and more! Definitely check their website ahead of time for the latest specials, hours, and offerings. Overall, we had such a wonderful first experience. We came here for breakfast and while they were out of a few items we still found some delicious entrees to get. I had the catfish and grits. It was a huge piece of catfish with a crispy crunchy outer crust and very tender fish. The grits were plentiful and buttery. The tables were a little dirty when we sat at our table but our server prompty came over to wipe everything down. Service itself was very friendly and on point. read more

I'm back and I came specifically for a Catfish sandwich today. It wasn't in the updated menu but there was no problem with the server to order it. I kept it simple and got the fries which I liked last time. The food came out hot and fresh but they forgot to put the cheddar cheese on the sandwich. I'm not big on sending things back so I didn't make a big deal about it. I just let my server know, and I happed to see the owner and he asked me how my sandwich was. I had to tell the truth. It was what I came for just missing that one thing. There was a DJ and a couple groups having lunch/brunch. Good music, laughs, and smiles all around. I wanted to give more than 3 stars but we will see how it goes when I come back for the full brunch experience with some friends on a Sunday. This was the WORST service ever. A group of young folks ain't so bad BUT when all they do is stand around and talk amongst themselves and forget about customer service is a whole nother situation. There was no customer service ethics at all in the place. The service was absolutely horrible the worst I've ever experienced actually. After flagging down the waiter we finally ordered after sitting there for 30 minutes to order a drink upon arrival. Then after, waited over an hour for our food to come out. While sitting and waiting 3 other tables full of people (3 or more) arrived and they received their food before all of mine came out. Mind you we been there an hour or so prior to them even arriving. It was just the worst delay of service, even though the food was good. My husbands food came out about ten minutes before my portion. The other portion of my food (eggs and sausage) came out after 3 other tables food came so clearly they forgot. I even flagged a whole other waiter down to ask about the remaining portion of my food order because our waiter moved very sloooow and not too attentive at all. Found this place close to Jerry's Art o Rama and decided to give it a try. Wasn't particularly easy to find even though it was located close by. So for what it's worth, they're located in basically the same building as Dunkin Donuts, at NE corner of Rural Rd. & E. Minton Dr. There's a light where you can turn. Heads up, parking lot is relatively small and there's a drive thru near entrance/exit which adds to congestion. I will say what a pleasant surprise their menu presents. Certainly not the typical options. Gizzards. Kool-Aid. Perch. And then there are the Happy Hour and Reverse Happy Hour, Weekend Specials, Karaoke on Tuesdays, did I mention Breakfast & Brunch options. We opted for the 2 chicken breasts and the 3 piece shrimp. Our server was sweet, attentive, and familiar with the menu. She provided clear and concise answers to my questions. She even gave an ordering option for the level of fried (extra crispy?) when the Catfish was ordered. Our beverages were refilled in a timely manner and she checked on us a few times to see how we were doing. Once again I skipped the gizzards, but I was tempted again. Decided our meals were likely more than enough. Spacious dining area, warm decor, televisions displaying scenery around the world, and of course there's music. We had plenty of time to spend catching up on Social Media because it took quite a while for our order. There is no doubt when your meal arrives that it was cooked to order. When our food arrived we weren't disappointed. They may not be fast but the food is fantastic. Delicious, crispy, lightweight batter on everything I've tried. Today I selected the Perch and Dark meat entree with coleslaw. Delicious, but I couldn't eat it all. My son went with Catfish & Shrimp small order with potato salad. My brother-in-love searched 'Soul food from a Black-owned restaurant' and we found George's...and what a find it was! I was worried upon entry when we only saw a couple of folks dining but this spot did not disappoint. Great food. Great service. Great location and plenty of space to spread out. Our crew ordered fried chicken, catfish, perch, shrimp, okra, fries, and potato salad. And it was all delicious. Freshly prepared and had us licking our fingers. Get both the hot and mild sauce. Warning. You get potato salad or coleslaw as an option but only a teaser size. The potato salad was so good, we ordered a larger size to share. They were all out of beers and didn't have any banana pudding...not sure if this is a thing or if it was just a busy day before we got there midday Saturday. The restaurant was clean, appealing and decorated with leftover lighting and a wall panel that was pretty cool visually with a short bar and spacious seating. Restrooms were clean and large too. Food was only better by the hilarious titling on the menu. With 'Loaded Big-Ass Biscuits' as an example, you know you need to keep looking around and it doesn't end there, LOL. The meals are made to order so expect a little bit of time to get them out to you but my party of 3 had various breakfasts with a burrito, chicken and fries and I had a type of omelet with seasoned potatoes. I have to say, it was really, really good! Flavor in all meals, the hospitality was wonderful and enjoyed the music overhead. I actually have no idea what I paid but I would absolutely roll back in due to the end product being a comfortable, enjoyable gathering place, with a scrumptious meal with great service. The only thing we noticed and has been previously communicated from the reviews is the 'hand-held' ordering/pay Tablet are still - not working well, kept failing, and our server had to go onto a second one so this seems not to be corrected since it's opened up. George's food tasted good, but the chicken looked like it was fried in old grease. The menu states the order comes with french fries and coleslaw or potato salad. We got a lot of french fries but a sample cup of coleslaw or potato salad to which the waitress told me that was complementary. Our server didn't come over to greet us for a whole 10 or 15 minutes when we sat down. Our server, also forgot to put our order in so we didn't get our food for another hour and a half. We got no utensils, hot sauce, or tartar sauce we had to walk to the counter to ask for it. The waitresses forgot to put in our drinks order. We eventually got our drinks 10 minutes after we were eating our food. The Cook was on the phone while cooking on the grill. The waitresses all five of them were standing in the back talking to each other, not serving anymore. The front door was open when the weather was at 110°. Which were told when cooking that'll be too much smoke from the . That's a problem on the weather. Is that high and it makes the restaurant feel like there is no conditioning on. We did see that there was another door open but this door was off the hinges so not sure what was going on there. Proud of black owned businesses but we have to do better. First, Thank you KayKay for making the experience bearable cause if I wasn't for our server we would've been left after waiting over an hour for our food! And and and the side potato salad was served in a 1oz dipping cup (see picture) and was told that it was complimentary not a side but menu says otherwise. I'm so disappointed, being from Chicago and growing up eating George's Chicken this place is no longer what it was when they first arrived to AZ. I used to order l it on DoorDash all the time and it would be so fresh and a taste of home. I'm unsure what changed but the last few times I've ordered it has been HORRIBLE. This is my last and final time. I ordered a 6 piece FRIED hard with lemon pepper and black pepper. They have me like 10 pieces of old ass chicken. It smells weird the taste is weird and they look like Pigeon Wings. I'm so disgusted, & honestly pissed that I had to even write this review, The ONE good Chicago Authentic place that I loved is now going down hill. Chicken Barely looks breaded. My server Shamia was excellent and working hard, waiting tables, making drinks & cleaning up. The tables & chairs are comfortable and they play great music & they have tvs for you to enjoy your time while you wait. The food is a 10 & the Obama cocktail was delicious. I've ordered to go several times this was my first time eating in. My complaint.. there were so many workers standing around talking at the bar and there were dirty tables. Eating your food around tables that have glasses and crumbs on them not cool. I have to say I went back the next day and got some catfish and macaroni and cheese and it was amazing!!!

It was a disappointment . We went here for brunch with some friends and no one was pleased. The food took forever , came out all at separate time so most of us ate cold food . Was missing items that the meal said came included with . Found a hair on my plate . Service was decent but not very attentive . Left feeling like i wish i just got chicken tenders instead . Stomachs were even upset after leaving . Plastic silver wear was given , sticky table even after being wiped down . Not one smile on the faces of the workers . Found this place on social media And it looked amazing so I had to try it. Got the catfish and grits. It was the best I have ever tasted. The grits were seasoned perfectly and so was the fish. The fry on the fish was excellent. Service was great. She answered any questions that we had and checked on us constantly. As an added bonus, they have Bernie Mac playing at the bar. It's unfortunate that I have to write this negative review. My husband and I went to George's on Sunday morning and the service was HORRIBLE! It took an hour and 18 mins for us to get our food. The first time we came they only had 1 server until the other one rolled in and this time it was the kitchen that was the problem. The most disheartening part is the OWNER was there and you would have thought he would have come over to the tables to apologize for the slow service, but he could have cared less. Neither he nor the manager offered any apologies. A lot of people just got up and left. It was disappointing to say the least. The food was good when we finally did get it, however the two sides that came with our meals were potato salad and cole slaw that came in those sample cups they give out in Costco. I ordered the small catfish and shrimp plate, which came with 2 fillets and 4 shrimp, crispy, flavorful, and cooked just right. I'm pretty sure they are meant to be shared, but they were so interesting--and I am weird, but I like my deviled eggs fresh and warm so this was perfect. I'm always on the hunt for catfish and was torn when I also saw gizzards. It's hard to find gizzards. But catfish was the mission today and it was also tasty. Will hit up the gizzards next time. So what could make it better? Wanted to like it more but...here goes. Mild sauce wasn't hittin' at all. Not to mention there was barely any on the chicken! One wing had absolutely none on it!! None on the bread either! The server was pleasant, downhill from there. I came in alone on a Monday around 10am. Three other tables occupied, one of which was finishing up. I ordered an omelette, comes with potatoes and toast. I retreat into my phone after ordering, some doom scrolling, wordle, connections, etc. Finally I realize I've been waiting 20+ minutes for a simple breakfast. I contemplate leaving (only water as a beverage), but stick it out a few more minutes. Food comes out. I'm given a prepackaged set of plastic utensils (not ideal). No ketchup. No jelly. No pepper except for the tiny packet with the utensils. No cheese in the omelette as ordered. The deep fried potatoes were okay. The cheeseless omelette was overcooked. First timers! Had a very good breakfast burrito with chicken sausage - hefty size, excellent flavor and a side of breakfast potatoes. Portion size is great! Very good coffee, super service and friendly environment - my wife enjoyed the BLT and sweet potato fries with ranch. Stumble upon this restaurant and we are so happy we did. Upon entering the establishment we were greeted so kindly by someone who took the time to answer any questions we had and also made some great suggestions. When the food came out it smelled so good it made us even hungrier. We ordered the fried catfish and jumbo shrimp and we were so delighted because they did it so deliciously. The pieces of fish and Shrimp were huge and extra crispy, yet juicy and not greasy! Simply finger-licking licking good! The gizzards were so crunchy and chewy, just the way we like them. I was soooo excited to try this new place out and am unfortunately disappointed. We went for a friend's Birthday brunch. It was a group of six of us and we had a reservation, so we're seated immediately. It's in a great location and the DJ was good. We started off with some cocktails that were ok. The food came out at different times, so we weren't able to all start eating together. I'm usually ok with that if it means the food will be hot and fresh. I shared the catfish & grits and chicken & waffles with one of my friends. The grits were luke warm, as you can see in the pic the cheese couldn't even melt. They also were lumpy! I was surprised that for $22 you only get 1 piece of catfish with a bowl of grits. The waffle was delicious and cooked perfectly. The chicken, which we ordered 'fried hard (extra crispy)' was far from that. We had to actually wait for the chicken as another batch was being dropped. The chicken was barely cooked. Our server was great but seemed that she had to help in the kitchen and at the bar, which prevented her from being available. We went here to support a black owned business and they played in our face. We ordered the shrimp and grits and a mimosa flight ($21) and this is what came out. For $20.50 I expected smooth and creamy grits, well seasoned shrimp, and some type of sauce, all beautifully plated -- not a bowl of grits with 3 pieces of fried shrimp thrown on top. The grits were thick, lumpy, and had no seasoning to it. Seems like they only added huge spoon fulls of melted butter and parsley for "garnish." The shrimps were of decent size, but still didn't make up for how lackluster this bowl of shrimp and grits were. I love supporting black owned businesses, but we have to do better if we want to progress more as a whole community. It starts with honesty....if I could give 0/5 stars I would. Worst experience ever. We were the only people in the restaurant at 7:30 on Friday night which should have been our first red flag and we were not greeted within 5 minutes of entering. Didn't get drinks for over 15 mins. Food took over 40 minutes & came at different times. 3 got their order & the other two in our party waited an additional 20 minutes for their food. Once it finally came it was served with regular fries instead of the sweet potato like they ordered. Waitress had a stank attitude the whole time. Had to ask for one refill more than once. The waitress answered the phone while taking our order. Horrible experience! Food was over salted, only one person in our party of 5 actually liked their food (catfish). Then when ordering we were rudely interrupted and told there was no kool aid today, but were never given any alternative options.
