It pains me to leave a 3 star review for a small business with perfectly tasty, fresh food and staff who are kind, but the prices here are just that shocking I am sorry to say. $25 for a salad, $17 for a hot dog with fries and a drink? We were so thrilled to move to this neighborhood and still have an easy fast food option, but we simply cannot afford to eat here. We can go to a sit down restaurant for these prices. I walk and run by George's pretty often and was craving a gyro so I decided to stop in. It's a bit of a whole in the wall but sometimes that's the best kind of vibe. Service was... very very slow. They had one person in there when we arrived and one other person arrived after us. It's a whole in the wall. They don't serve the hot dogs with ketchup and they don't weigh the meat for the gyros. This is a mundane and at the same time a quintessential Chicago experience. Super friendly place with Jeopardy! playing on the TV in the back - nice change from sports (says me, not sure how many would agree). The fries are notably good here, and the dog is quintessential Chicago. It's a little pricier than some joints, but it's also more comfortable. I'm pretty much never going to complain about a great Chicago dog purveyor even if there isn't much to say about the dog because there isn't much variation. And there shouldn't be. Just hit up George's for the chicken kebab pita as well as a Chicago hot dog. Omg! Both are amazing. You get an insane amount of crispy fries with both. The tzatziki sauce is so light and refreshing - get an extra side of it to dip your fries into! I also get a second pita as the kebab pita overflows with chicken and peppers, onions, fresh tomatoes slices.. You need a second pita for a second leftover sandwich the next days. The first hot dog I have eaten without ketchup! I know that ketchup is frowned upon in Chicago so I decided to get the true experience. I got a Chicago-style hot dog and it was a bit difficult for me to eat. All of the toppings were piled so high that I had to take bites of the pickle separately. We recently went in here and we had a nice experience. The place is clean and the staff were friendly. There are a lot of good choices on their menu but we just decided to have their hot dogs. Ordered and when order was ready found out the restaurant was " cash only" ( tip for future patrons- bring cash!). Anyway, the woman behind the counter must have seen my panicked face and without blinking an eye said kindly " don't worry about it- I know you are in a rush- you can come back and pay later". Really? Wow- she has never seen me before and few businesses I know would have handled that in such a kind , empathetic way. This place is DISGUSTING. The tables are greasy. The walls have running grease and food on it. The floors are wet and have food. The bathroom is sick. Not to mention, when my mom asked to use the restroom, they told us it was not working. Cash Only Decided I was in the mood for a gyro and Georges was around the corner so I thought why not. Ordered up and he walked away... Called my order, went to pay and found out that they are a cash only business. Don't get me wrong I don't have a problem with that just let you clientle know with a sign or when the order is placed not when you have no choice but to be ripped off at the ATM in the place. This was a stop on our Bucktown Food Tour, and my first time trying a Chicago hot dog. It's enveloped in a steamed warm poppy seed bun, topped with mustard, onions, relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices, a pickled sport pepper, and a dash of celery salt. No ketchup allowed on Chicago Dogs. So, choosing to stay uninjured during the Food Tour, I didn't even argue the ketchup thing. Ketchup Schmeckshup, who needs it. Dude, the dog was good. The interesting combination of toppings made it truly unique in taste.
