Update to the never ending nightmare that is still ongoing ! As I keep saying do yourself a favor and do NOT buy a vehicle from them nor take it for service! After our attorney contacted the owner of Gerald Hyundai, we were suddenly told that an allegedly independent outside technician inspected our vehicle and determined that it now needs another new transmission. This makes no sense. Our vehicle had already spent 10 months at the dealership, and we only had it back for one day after they claimed the transmission had been replaced. Now we're being told it needs yet another transmission? It raises serious questions about what was actually done to the vehicle. Our experience has been extremely frustrating from start to finish. We received inconsistent information, poor communication, and no confidence that our vehicle was safe to drive. The most concerning part was when General Manager Mike Chino told my husband he could not state that the vehicle was safe. Looking back, that statement speaks for itself. Based on our experience, I cannot recommend Gerald Hyundai's sales or service departments. If you're considering buying a vehicle or having yours serviced there, I would strongly encourage you to do your research before making that decision. read more

My salesman was pleasant throughout the experience of buying a Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy, but caveat emptor: this is a car dealership and they act like a car dealership. I'm curious what these other 5 star reviews experienced because this was a toss up with a root canal for how I'd rather spend my time. The sales manager got me in the door with offering me a good discount on MSRP, but he conveniently left out the mandatory and unadvertised "Gerald Protection Package" that's an absolute rip off: $1000 for nitrogen, wheel locks (which they don't actually include?), door edge guards (which are shrink wrap), and VIN etching (with 1 year theft protection "worth" 5k if it gets stolen). It's a dealer markup that's disguised as a useless add-on. Another review mentions this dealership specifically does not do the "skeezy VIN etching" trick, so maybe this is the special treatment they give higher-in-demand vehicles. They kept trying to reason that "all dealers do this" (they don't), and "we're already selling this at a loss" (they're not). The only reason I completed the sale was because they increased the trade-in value and reduced the unwanted "Protection Plan" to 699. I'd already driven an hour from Chicago and spent an hour and a half in the dealership already. No where on the website, window sticker, or in my communication on the phone did they mention this mandatory markup. They were very clear that it was my fault for not knowing about it though. Then when you get to financing it's another hour of extended warranty/prepaid maintenance sales pitches that just makes you want to run out screaming. It was a 4 hour process, and I walked into the dealership with the car already picked out. Oof. Edit: 2/1: Not even a day in and the door edge protectors are peeling off. How are these going to protect doors when they can't even protect themselves?! Edit 2/3: It keeps getting worse: the "VIN etching" they charged me for doesn't actually exist, no windows are etched. Sitting at the dealership right now because my 2021 Hyundai Calligraphy with 80,000 has a severe oil leak. We bought the Gerald lifetime extended warranty, which I have signed contract for in hand. They just brought me some other document claiming oil leaks are not covered. Also, we are being told our car was a used car not purchased new. Nope we are the first owners bought new from the dealer for over $50,000. Will update as this progresses. So far I have been charged $89 for a diagnostic appointment. Update: after 4 or more interactions trying to convince me that the oil leak would not be covered, and a story that we bought a used car that is not covered by Hyundai's warranty, after showing the employees our signed contract for the Gerald bumper to bumper unlimited warranty in hand, the dealership filed the claim to the warranty company and will be doing the repair on Friday, charging us our deductible. "Gerald" called regarding this review and I explained the reason for it. Stopped in to pick up a company car that was dropped off there for me. I was not sure if the keys were in service or with the purchase desk. I went into service explained what was going on to the guys and they were very rude and disrespectful treated me like I was nobody even though we work with them all the time. They told me try the "purchasing tower" and I asked where is that and they just pointed towards a door couldn't even explained just walk this way and they will be right here. I go to the front of the store looking clueless and no one approaches me. With this being a dealership you think the sales guys would be all over anyone in the building. I walk over to some office like area which is the purchasing "tower" literally just a glass room with a desk. Spoke with some guy who clearly didn't want to talk to me instantly said talk to service. I walked out annoyed cause the team here is absolutely useless finally accidentally ran into the guy who had the keys outside because I found my car and he just so happened to be moving it at the time to a different parking spot. If I didn't happen to run into I don't think I would have ever gotten my car back. I will be forever using the other Hyundai in Aurora next to the fox valley mall and I recommend everyone else do the same. I went into this dealership looking for a certified used car. The salesman was nice and showed me several brands that they had on the lot. We went back to his desk after the test drives and he offered that maybe I would like to consider a new car instead. We looked at a couple and talked some basic prices. I told him this was a new thought for me and I needed to think about it and talk it over with my wife. I was ready to leave and he went to get some paper work and his card. The sales manager came back with him and sat down. He introduced himself and asked if I had any questions. I told him "no, I have no questions at this time." He continued to sit there so I said "OK, thanks, you can go". He said "I don't have to go, this is my house." I stated again, I have no questions and was leaving. He said "I am the sales manager here and you are going to be talking to me at some point." At that point I got up to leave and handed the business card back to the salesman. Told the salesman that we were close and sorry. The sales manager met me at the door and I said again that I did not need any help and now did not like him or his approach. He said that I probably did not like him because of his accent. I asked "what are you saying?" I assumed that he was calling me a racist, perhaps not. There was no way his ego would allow for the fact that I was not making an immediate decision, I needed other car options, had no more questions, did not need any assistance from him or whatever. It had to be me that was the problem. When I purchase a car, it is more than the car. It is a relationship with the dealership as well. There is the distinct possibility that the relationship will extend to service maybe even future sales. If this is the way the sales manager reacts when I have no questions upon our first meeting - What kind of place are they running? Perhaps this experience demonstrates the true culture that permeates the organization. Sad thing, I probably would have bought the new car this weekend. Now off to different dealer. My names is Jarrod Nelson, and I have been a customer at Gerald for almost 20 years. 5 vehicles, from my first, to my current, and not to mention the other family members I have sent there. But unfortunately I can no longer recommend them, and wont be using them for my next trade. I live 2 hours from there, I try and do all the maintenance that they recommend, but even when they know my car will be there for 5+ hours, and is going to cost me over 3 grand....they will not give me a loaner car, even if I'm willing to schedule a month in advance. I have current recalls that need addressed, and am having to just live with them because I don't have the option to sit there for half a day. So it pains me to say it...but Monday will be my last visit. If you live more than 30 minutes away, don't use Gerald. read more

Rather than honor their life time warranty or even the Hyundai warranty, they wanted us to come in,have oil topped off,and drive off and come back in two weeks then do it again two more times! Quart a week! While she was on a road trip, car broke down and low and behold, I had it towed to a Hyundai dealer that found recalls that were not addressed nor made aware of. This review is in regard to the Service department for a 2022 Tuscan I purchased brand new from Gerald. I called to schedule an oil change. I asked how many of the free oil changes do I have left. I was told that as long as I came in before July, I had one more free oil change left. I scheduled the appointment for Friday April 18th first thing in the morning. So I drive up there on that Friday Morning (30 miles since I live in Joliet). And I am waiting in line for them to open. Once they open, I pull in and the Service tech comes over to me and confirms that I am in for an oil change and proceeds to tell me that I am going to have to pay for this one. I tell him when I called on the phone, the person who scheduled the appointment confirmed that I had one free oil change left. He proceeded to tell me that they were wrong, and it happens all the time. I asked him why I should be held responsible for their mistake. He said there is nothing he could do and if he did not charge me it would come out of his pocket. I replied that as big as Gerald is they really can't afford to cover one oil change when it was their mistake. He replied no, they would not be responsible for what their call center tells customers. It is a real shame because I was also in the market for a New Santa Cruz that I was going to shop for while waiting for the oil change. Since they would not honor what I was told on the phone I left without the oil change. Some of which are claimed to be added to the vehicle already. When attempting a trade in the management team tries to hold your vehicle keys hostage; upon walking by out of the dealership managemnt THEN tries to give you a reasonable trade in value for your vehicle. Very pushy, management also follows you to vehicle when attempting to leave. Highly suggest you try someplace else. read more

I had a different experience. I bought a GV80 2024 from them. I have to say, Andy was absolutely the most knowledgeable about this product from any dealer - probably why I bought it! Andy wrote to me the day after the purchase and coached me on what to write to Genesis (their survey). Previously I asked him a few questions, one being about my cupholder that would not open all the way. I did not hear from him. I waited a few weeks and took my car to another dealer. To my surprise, that dealer found a vehicle inventory tag in the cupholder and charged me $100, because that is not warranted, so I spoke with Andy. He asked me why I did not call him? He explained he was busy with the new store and missed the text. He asked me to send the receipt and promised me they would make me whole, but then went dark. I spoke with Michael (general manager) who wanted pictures and the estimate again. He was upset at the other dealer, said it was "cheap" that they did not do this for free. After I sent, and received confirmation he received, I never heard from Michael again (I wrote to him repeatedly) and told him that I would post this review, send it to Genesis and the BBB. I would be cautious about dealing with them. Why? This is an insignificant amount of money in the totality of everything. For me, it's about the promise and the premise. Side note, I went to Algonquin Hyundai (Rosen), and the customer experience and service experience was awesome - (I know that's a thing for many people). They take great care in taking advantage of the current market situation. They not only tack on market value upcharge of $1500 but they have the dumb GPP (protection plan) which is another $1300 of nothing. (a piece of thin tape on the edge of doors, nitrogen in tires, and wheel locks that where part of the package on the car.) Why would anyone take their car back to a dealership that intentionally takes advantage of you. Purchased a Genesis SUV from here. Upon arrival, Dorian immediately greeted and invited us in. We had a specific vehicle in mind that my wife and I wanted to test drive. Dorian assisted us with the test drive and it was great. Besides being very easy to talk to, he was also very patient in explaining the various features of the car as well as having a nice drive route planned that allowed us to sample the features of the car. Once we decided to buy the car, we were turned over to a separate person in the finance & insurance department and that's where things went a bit downhill. I've bought 3 cars in the last 3 years from various dealerships, and this is the part I dislike due to the high-pressure tactics. During this instance, when we declined one of the "extended" warranties, we were told we were the first ones to have declined such coverage and essentially implied that we were fools in declining such coverage. Nonetheless, we had a positive experience at Gerald overall but knocked the 1 star due to the F&I shenanigans. read more

They're deal makers and will make fair deal, and most importantly, a car dealership that actually cares. My brother in law's sister bought a used vehicle from Gerald. For whatever reason, she wasn't satisfied with her purchased vehicle. Again, the vehicle was purchased and she drove home when she realized her dissatisfaction. So, I contacted Michael Chino (GM) not even the guy who sold my brother in law's sister the car for a possible swap. Expecting some major hair pulling. To my absolute surprise - he took ownership of the situation, and made the swap unbelievably smooth. The genuine care, desire to fully satisfy their customers til the end was remarkable. Just when I hoped that Gerald Hyundai's inabilty to care for customers was limited to the Sales Department, I made the mistake of taking my Genesis G80 in for its 7,500 mile check and learned that they all are encompassing in terms of poor service. Not only did it take them 2 hours for an oil change and tire rotation, but I specifically asked if fluid top offs were included and was told they were. This was important as my washer fluid light came on while heading to the appointment. Once I headed home not only did the light come back on, but they also didn't reset the service light and I am now reminded every time I drive somewhere that my next service will need to be done somewhere inconvenient but likely by a car dealer that cares. I currently have a 2018 Santa Fe that has been sitting at their service department for 6 months. It is inoperable after multiple different repairs and diagnosis. I have received very poor customer service and communication from the service department. I specifically asked the service manager to contact me about this vehicle when it entered repair, so I could be updated in a timely manner. I have personally received no calls like I asked from the service department as I write this. I've been told that their department, engineers, and tech line have had difficulty with the vehicle after I had to contact USA Hyundai consumer relations department to receive timely updates rather than from the dealership I bought the vehicle from. Gerald Hyundai is always courteous and friendly. The office/lobby is maintained and clean. John was a great service rep--very informative and gave me options and explained things very well. The only reason I didn't give it a five star is because they didn't wash my car after the oil change and this is not the first time. I shouldn't have to ask for that and it should be included in the service and it should be something that is checked off on before releasing the car back to me. John did say that I can return and get the car washed anytime after my service, but today is a rainy day and now it's going to have to be an extra trip to take it in to get washed. We purchased the car a year ago in March and we had lifetime oil changes rolled into the purchase price which included a service where someone from Hyundai would pick up the car and take it for the oil change while I was at work. Since then they no longer offer the white glove service and it's hard to make an appointment. So we were told we could take it in and wait for them to work it in. I was sold a 2020 Nissan Rogue which I now understand had an after market bumper (of course not reported in the CarFax). A month after purchase, the bumper popped the clips which is because the bumper doesn't fit properly. I made the mistake of dealing with Sonny, used car service manager, who actually told me that I must have "hit something" which caused the bumper to pop off the clips. He told I just need new clips to fix the problem (ummmm, nope). It's going to take $1000 to put on a genuine Nissan bumper.
