In February 2017, I was helping my daughter get a new car. We saw an ad on Gerald Subaru's website for an Impreza lease at $98/month. I contacted the dealership via their website, and was soon in contact with Leonard (Len) Batson. After confirming the availability of the vehicle and the lease deal, I arranged for my daughter to visit the dealership after work. Shortly after that, I received a call from Len informing me of the up front payment that would be required - about $2000 more than I was expecting. He insisted that we would have to pay for sales tax on the entire purchase price of the vehicle. Immediately after the call, I researched the issue and found out that pursuant to a late 2014 change in the statute, sales tax was only due on the down payment and the monthly payments and not on the entire purchase price. I forwarded a Chicago Tribune article to Len and he immediately retreated from his earlier position. How can a car salesman not be aware of such a statute change that occurred over two years ago!? Len then indicated that he would not be at the dealership at the agreed time but that we would be helped by the Internet manager, Dana Armitage. I contacted Dana for a preliminary quote on our trade-in vehicle. Dana appeared to be working on it but then Len intervened to insist that they could not provide any estimate at all without the car in front of him. Later that afternoon, on two separate occasions, I asked Len for exact figures on the other costs such as licensing, title, doc fee etc. Len never responded. WE decided to keep the appointment anyway. When my daughter arrived at the dealership and asked for Len/Dana, she was instead helped by a pair of Leos - Leo Lopez and the Used Car Manager, Leo Katsnelson - who had copies of my emails with Len. After a test drive and inspection of our trade in vehicle, they offered a trade in value of $2000 (we later got a trade in offer of $5000 at another Subaru dealership) and advised my daughter that after the trade-in, she would need an additional $3250!! When we demurred on the trade-in price, and after a long wait, they came back with a trade-in price of $3500 - better, but still a joke. During this time, they were also withholding her car keys and she had to get assertive to get her keys back. When we continued to object to the trade-in price, they decided to reevaluate their offer. At that point, we decided that this was not the type of organization we wanted to do business with, and my daughter drove off. When I called Len later that evening, he professed total ignorance of what had happened. I will let you draw your own conclusions, but there is no way I would ever consider using Gerald Subaru to either buy a car or for servicing a Subaru. I can't help but think that personnel at the dealership decided to take advantage of a solo young woman. I gave them a one star rating because I couldn't do a zero star rating. read more

We recently went to this dealership to buy 2018 Subaru Outback and the sales woman kelly honored Costco price so wouldn't have any problem purchasing after 10 months of purchasing the Subaru Outback rust started showing on the trunk area we called the dealer and my wife took it to the dealer to show them the Rust and checked the problem they took pictures of the trunk and it said we will get back to you. They never did after 4 weeks waiting I called one afternoon I talked with a person he called himself Len and I'm explaining my situation to him and the only thing I heard from him is yeah yeah yeah yeah and I said I'm tired of all the yeahs please let me talk with somebody higher he said he's not there his name is Chuck he's the one who handled the warranty and the vehicles I called Chuck next day I talked to him he said sorry the lady which is I forgot her name is supposed to call you to tell you we can't do anything to help you. it's between you and saburu and! Just called the service department at Gerald Subaru of Naperville to see what they would charge to install an official Subaru remote starter on my 2017 Outback. They quoted me $995. The official Subaru parts website lists the remote starter part at $369... so Gerald Subaru wanted to charge over $600 for labor. I called 3 other Subaru dealerships within a 30 mile radius of my home and they all gave me quotes under $500 TOTAL for parts and labor! I can understand a $50-$100 difference in price from dealership to dealership, but a $400+ difference just to install a remote starter is ridiculous! Word to the wise... get quotes from other dealerships before getting any service done at this one. read more

It pays to shop around for better prices for service. First of all they charge $157 just to diagnose the problem. I thought my problem would be covered under drive train warranty but it wasn't. The bill for repairs would have came to almost 2800. I took it to another mechanic who determined that only one rear wheel bearing was bad not both. Subaru wanted to complete other unnecessary repairs also. Even though I ended up paying $157 at Subaru for a car wash and some snacks, the total bill at the other mechanic was less than a third the cost. read more

They don't accepts offers for the advertised price, you will be expected to negotiate UP from the ePrice offered by the dealership! Yesterday I saw a car on Gerald Subaru's online inventory that I was interested in. The Internet price was listed. Next to that was an option to get the "ePrice." To get the ePrice you fill out a simple form. After submitting the from I received an email listing the ePrice, which was close to $800 under the Internet price. I then received an email from Richard in Internet Sales saying that he reviewed my vehicle request and to contact him for a test drive or with any questions. We test drove the vehicle last night. We decided we liked the car enough to negotiate on it. Richard said he had no idea that we had been offered the ePrice. I gave him a printout of the email as proof. He admitted that he got my email information from the lead form I filled out which triggered the ePrice. I am not sure how he managed to get my information from this lead form but not know what ePrice I was offered, but I had the proof right there showing what I was emailed. After consulting with the sales manager he said that the ePrice listed in the quote was produced by a "glitch" in the system, that this has happened before but it shouldn't, that the system sent me the dealer's cost price instead of a list price. We offered to pay the ePrice but the dealership wouldn't accept this. Richard wanted me to toss out an offer higher than the ePrice, but their starting point for negotiations was the Internet price. We walked out. I believe this dealership knowingly sends out ePrices they will not honor just to get you in the door, then claim there's a glitch in the system. There is no glitch, this is simply the way they do business. Dishonest approach, false advertising, and really not a way to build a good relationship with potential customers. We might end up paying another dealer the same amount we would have paid these guys for a similar vehicle, but at least we will not have given these guys the credit of a sale. Stay away. read more

I had a 9:25 appointment last Saturday for an oil change and to fix my taillight. I called Friday night to make sure I could be out by 10:30, as I was signing up for an 11:00 class if I could. The nice service lady told me I shouldn't have a problem, but try to get in early. So I show up Saturday morning at 9:00. It's 10am and I don't see my car anywhere in the garage. I check in at 10:23 and see my car is just now going up in the air for an oil change. I don't think this is acceptable, given I had an appointment and the crew knew in advance I needed to be out by 10:30. I need to find a new dealership for service! Not happy... read more

This review is for Gerald Kia/Subaru Collision Center. I recently had my vehicle repaired here. It was a State farm Authorized Body Shop. At first when I first went there to get an estimate the representative was nice, cordial and friendly. I emphasized certain things I wanted to ensure be checked out on the car to ensure the car was safe. Upon the car being finished, the representative called me and said the car was ready. I got to the body shop, the car had mis-matched hubcaps on it, scarring from the accident was still on the door handle of the car and the mudguard on the car still had the same damage from the accident. The guy said no problem they'd fix it. The next day I called him to let him know that I really needed to drive the car to make sure it still drove the way it did prior to the accident I was involved in, when I got to the body shop, he had a very nasty attitude and told me it was coming up to the Thanksgiving holiday and many of their technicians were out (that's not my problem is what I was thinking), then he said what if I got in another accident on the test drive and I hadn't yet paid my 500 dollar deductible. I said "sir are you serious, State farm is paying you 4000 dollars to fix this car, what is 500.00 and me ensuring my car is fixed properly. Finally the estimator guy rode with me, I asked where is I88 from Ogden, as I wanted to drive the car 65 mph to ensure it didn't shake, rattle or roll, his response was "I don't know , I don't live around here." As for me, I wouldn't recommend this shop; I'd always had good customer service with collision revision, but just figured I'd take my car to someone who actually sees a lot of Nissan's. Case in point, BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE, Anyone who is getting their car fixed should have the right to know the car is driving properly; I'm not just going to take someone's word for it. read more

Eight months pregnant -- wanted to make the car buying experience as smooth as possible, so negotiated online: had a deposit on the car, all terms settled, and pick-up scheduled before we even walked in. Nearly 5 HOURS later, we finally left with the vehicle. Dana, the sales manager, sat down to our appointment with him over a half hour late, (after passing us up and taking NEW clients next door ten minutes after our appointment time), having no idea who we were: asking us "so what car can I interest you in?". There was NO paperwork prepped & apparently no one to do this for us -- we had to wait for a salesman who was busy helping other customers. He sent us to test drive our car alone, sat us with brochures to "keep us amused" (which I immediately told him we didn't need), wasted time trying to upsell us on things we'd already declined, then FINALLY completed the initial paperwork w/ us. We thought we were finally done, but were told we had to wait at the back of the line yet again for financing. We spent HOURS, total, waiting -- all which could have been avoided if things were prepared as they should have been. It was clear that they were opting to push us aside, since our sale was basically complete, they had our deposit, etc. -- spending their time, instead, chasing uncommitted customers. And, when we suggested I wasn't well, really needed to eat, and we'd just come back -- we were told we couldn't leave, or we'd have to start all over again. They did give us the best price out of the dealers we talked to, and the sales guy we worked with in person was nice and did the best he could with the situation he was handed. But management, process, and the initial salesman were so disrespectful of my needs -- utterly unprepared and unprofessional. I left in tears, literally sick and tired. Missed important plans due to this, ruined the weekend. We've purchased cars this way before with other dealers: in and out in less than an hour. This was just beyond ridiculous. read more

From the moment I arrived I felt very welcomed. They assessed my trade in quickly and gave me an excellent price point to start off with. Leo was very understanding of my current car situation and my car needs and wants and kept me within my budget he was not trying to push me beyond my means which you find in a lot of sales reps. I was shown multiple options in different price points and when it came to extras and add ons he explained everything thoroughly and made me feel like it was my choice to add on or not I never once felt pressured into making a decision. Cynthia and Tina were very helpful and honest in making sure we had print outs of all the necessary background information on each car I was considering I never felt like I was getting the run around with anyone even when it came to dealing with Anthony in Finance he was also really upfront about warranty options and didn't press he was able to get us an excellent interest rate and payments that fit my budget better than I could've hoped for. As an existing Customer, who purchased a New Vehicle and waiting for Maintenance to be Performed, I was interested in Driving a New Vehicle and was Denied by Sales Associate and Sales Manager. I am Confused on why their job titles include the word "Sales." It is Obvious from my Experience that they are NOT interested in Sales nor Customer Service. When I initially made my purchase, the vehicle was driven out from the Showroom floor for a Test Drive and I made my Purchase shortly after. Today, I was only interested in driving and purchasing from the car lot. It's Disappointing that the level of Customer Service has Deteriorated in less than 2 years. Find your next vehicle elsewhere, where Customer Service is a relevant and you are Respected for your Purchase. My vehicle wasn't even washed after Maintenance. The service department here can't stop lying. They will change your appointment times, tell you on the phone that your oil change will take 1hr, then tell you 1hr 15min when you get in, and finally take 2 hours to do an oil change. We dealt with Sara and she was not helpful at all. read more

Just bought a 2014 Forester with Glenn @ Gerald Subaru/Kia. Real nice guy, helped make the new car buying process bearable. Of course there were the typical car dealer issues like having to haggle on price and 'i have to check with my manager', and a hard sell on the warranty/maintenance plans. If you can stay calm through all of this, and put your best negotiating foot forward, you'll come out better on the other side. Just bought our second car from Kelly. Bought a used car 2 years ago and came back for a new 2019 Subaru Forester. We did our homework... Interest rates, online quotes for a few different vehicles, trade in value, etc. Kelly got us in the car we wanted at the price point we needed to hit, with the trade-in value we expected. She spent a lot of time with us finding the right car, taking test drives and explaining and demonstrating features (she knows these vehicles inside and out and was able to answer all of my questions). My husband and I bought our 2010 Outback here. Our sales person literally dropped off the face of the earth after we bought our car. We had some issues he was supposed to resolve after our purchase, but we were never able to get back in touch with him (apparently he left the dealership). Worse yet, none of the other sales people or managers would help us. I made phone calls, my husband made phone calls, and we both showed up at the dealership, but it got us nowhere. I really feel that once they had our money, we didn't matter. We've been back for service, but only because there are no other dealerships nearby. It usually takes DAYS in order to get in. We LOVE our Outback, and will buy a second when it's time to replace my husband's car, but NOT from this dealership. Buy an Outback, but NOT here. read more

I was interested in a Forester so I stopped in. The sales person, Cristian, was a friendly, nice guy. I test drove the car and really liked it. Cristian offered to get me an appraisal on my vehicle. They offered me $5,500 for a well-maintained 2010 Corolla S with 41,000 miles...a car that KBB said is worth AT LEAST $9,400 (trade-in: good condition) if not closer to $11,000 (private: very good condition). Kind of shady. Do your homework if you plan on doing business here. I personally will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

We bought a car from Carmax, but thought maybe we could do better if we kept our eyes open. A few days later we called Glenn Miller at Gerald, and he had a nicer version of the same car for a reasonable price. After a little good-natured negotiating we had the same year, same model car, but with tons of extras (leather, rear camera, etc.) and at the end of the day we got better financing, free life-time powertrain warranty (Carmax warranty would have cost extra), lower fees... basically we broke even vs the Carmax price! By dinner time we had returned the other Subaru (yay for 5 day no-hassle returns), and were driving a nicer car, had a free TomTom, an awesome warranty, all for the same money. The Carmax people didn't believe us at first, they said they almost never get undercut by a dealer! Glenn also sent us free Subaru floor mats and travel mugs as a thank you. High five! read more

I just bought my third Forester from Gerald. My 2019 car is incredible, with more bells and whistles than I imagined. I am already in love with it, just as I loved the other two. Mike O'Brien, my sales associate, couldn't have been more patient or helpful, answering every question and after purchasing, taking me through all the new features of the car. Much appreciation should go to Business Manager Tony, who also honestly and efficiently walked me through the protection package and extra warranty, which I did buy. Another big reason I have stuck with Subaru is their service department. I can get the car in when I need to and Chuck and Colin always make sure the job is completed thoroughly and expertly. What a disgusting excuse for a dealership. I worked out a deal the day before. I drove after work over 100 miles to pick up our new Subaru Legacy 2018 anniversary edition that the general manager had been driving. I was told it was not damaged. I mean after all it's a brand new car with a couple hundred miles! I get there after driving over 100 miles and working all day to find a car that the general manager smashed into a curb and gouged the rim! Seriously you let your general manager drive the anniversary edition and do this damage in a couple hundred miles! I wouldn't recommend this dealership to my worst enemy! I found a used car online at Gerald and called to arrange a test drive and inspect the vehicle. I was planning on driving down Saturday (of Labor Day weekend) but was told others were interested and were scheduled for test drives Saturday morning. I made arrangements to take time off of work and drive 4 hours to the dealer on Friday to make sure I had an opportunity to test drive the car. I explained that I had a 2018 Subaru Outback Touring 3.6R that may be used as a trade in on this vehicle and Tina said she had people interested in that particular vehicle, and through email gave me a broad range of trade in values that seemed to be appropriate. I arrived at the dealer and was greeted by a salesman when I entered, he introduced me to Tina and she said that he would show me the car and disappeared never to be seen again. The car was brought up front and he walked me out to see it. After two days of emails and phone calls arranging a test drive and inspection, and discussing my possible trade in, the car had not even been detailed yet.... it was dirty on the inside, there were mints left in pull out compartment, and under the hood was very dirty. The salesman said "that's a good thing, because you can see the condition it was in when traded to the dealership so you know we are not covering anything up". I looked the vehicle over and was concerned that it was not in the condition the sales ad described as "being the one you've been looking for. Your dream car. You can finally stop searching!!" I was able to take the car for a test drive and it was pretty nice, but I felt something in the brakes when applying them, as if it had a slightly warped rotor. I continued to inspect the vehicle after the test drive and notice the rear passengers door to me appeared a VERY slightly different color, and confirmed once opening the door that there was over spray on the inside of the door jamb. This to me confirmed that the door was repainted for some reason. We went back inside and the Service Manager came to talk to me about my concerns with the brakes and door paint issue. I explained what I felt in the steering wheel and about the overs pray in the door jamb. He quickly explained that the brakes were perfect, and if nothing comes up on a Carfax, or whatever report it was that they run, then there is nothing they can do because it wasn't reported... I knew at that point this was not a dealership I would be willing to do business with. I thanked them both for their time, and walked out the door. I should have know better as I sat and listened to one of the salesmen begging the people he was dealing with to make sure to give him ALL FIVES on his review, because that's how he makes his money. I guess people are more interested in Starbucks coffee machines, quiet waiting rooms and shiny dealerships.... I'm interested in an honest salesman, a good value and being treated with RESPECT. read more

We came in to look at an Outback. Russ was at the door a greeted us with a smile and a nice welcome. We let him know we were looking for a White Outback with a black interior. In no time he had one pulled up ready for a test drive. He spent the time showing us all the features even though we told him we were just browsing. After the drive we realized that it was a bit small so we asked about the Ascent. Once again he had white with black pulled up with similar features as the Outback. We did another test drive and he showed us all the features. We were almost sold. We talked price and he let us know that they are not getting many of these since they just came out so we wouldn't have much room for negotiation. I sort of expected this with a 2 week old model so I can't fault them for that. He gave us all the pricing, introduced us to his manager, and then we chated. There was 0 pressure. We told him we would drive a couple other brands see if we come back. Needless to say, we came back the next day they were open and made our purchase. The purchase process is a bit long to go through all the paperwork, but Russ stuck around to chat and even took us to the car to give us a run down and help us setup some of the features while we waited. After the first day of meeting Russ and his manager we felt that it was the most easy pressure free experience we have ever had test driving a car. If the Ascent lives up to its promise we will be back to buy another Subaru from Russ in a few years. When you look at pricing such as Edmunds keep in mind Gerald adds a protection package as a line item. It is listed on Edmunds and other sites but it is not part of the total price These are add-on items that Subaru sells such as rubber floor mats, cargo mats, wheel locks, and they add clear door edge guard (not a Subaru thing). What stinks is that they add up to an extra $800 on the price. Looks like they don't build the cars with them, but instead tack them on as a dealer installed option. I am sure they get more incentive for this approach (only speculating since they aren't on the build sheet). The one thing I disliked is the fiance office. It should be called accessory item office more than finance. Trying to sell us everything under the sun. Car warranty, maintenance plan, windshield protection, specialty coatings, tire and wheel protection. All items that I declined at first and then all of a sudden the prices were cut in half. The price of the maintenance plan is questionable for 3 years 36K miles. That is a total of 6 visits. We will see if they add up to what I paid. Maybe I will break even. The problem with all of this is that you spent so much time at the dealer you start to get worn down. You start to wonder if the pricing is fixed on these items. The finance manager talked monthly payments with all these items. We stopped him quickly and told him we want actual cost numbers. This changed our negotiation a bit. Never talk monthly payments. If you feel unsure. Decline it all. Just keep in mind you won't be able to role it into your monthly payments, but do you really want to finance maintenance? You can also price shop with other dealers for many of these items. Especially the warranty and the maintenance plan. All those items have a cancellation policy so can back out within 30-90 days if you don't use the item. Overall we are happy with the experience. We love the car and really enjoyed our interaction with Russ. The one star deduction is fair because the finance office is exhausting. It's not just financing.......its add-ons. You think the deal is done, but it is only beginning. The initial warranty price I was presented was double of what I actually ended up paying.
