As strange it may sound this was my first time going to a mechanic. I'm a single female driving a borrowed 1999 Mercedes S320 with 440,000 miles. My father has meticulously maintained this car for years (obviously) but with all this traffic-y NOVA driving, I noticed a shake that could have been caused by the transmission. Dad recommended checking the transmission fluid, so I scheduled an appointment. (This model requires a mechanic to check the transmission fluid). I didn't sleep the night before for fear of getting pressured into fixing problems I didn't understand or might not have. Though I knew my car was in good condition, I'm totally clueless and felt vulnerable to being scammed. To my pleasant surprise, my experience was perfect. I was greeted by who I think is the owner, who was so pleasant and warm. I enjoyed their refreshment area and set up shop in one of the office spaces while I waited to hear how my car was doing. They had a great selection of snacks and beverages. About 45 minutes later, Todd, my mechanic came out to explain everything to me. He was even kind enough to show me what was likely making the suspicious noise. I was still clueless but I appreciated him trying. After not being able to relay all the car jargon, he was kind enough to talk to my dad on the phone. That meant a lot to me. He was honest and realistic. I didn't feel cheated, pressured or intimidated. I will 100% come back here and have already started recommending them to friends. German Auto Group of Alexandria is efficient, helpful, and experienced. Adrian made me feel welcome, and I trusted that this business is only trying to solve the issue at hand, not drain your wallet. With that said, their prices are not cheap either, but still less than several other shops nearby, and definitely cheaper than the dealership. They were able to do a thermostat replacement, coolant flush, engine coil change, and sway bar link replacement on my 2005 BMW 330xi. No issues with working on an older car. Mini offices/coffee/wifi in the event you need to work from their location while waiting for your car. read more

This is a terrible and dishonest business and customer service is the worst experience ever in my life. I had a battery drainage problem and went to this shop. My car was there for almost a week because the mechanic wanted to make sure of the problem. He finally told me that I needed a new battery but I had to purchase their Interstate Battery and the cost of the battery and installation was $540. He condemned all other batteries. I then decided to only pay the diagnostic fee and took my car to Mercedes Benz of Alexandria and I got the job done for less than $300 with the original Mercedes battery. I advise you to never patronize this shop.That's the saddest mistake you can ever make. read more

April 2018- There aren't enough positive words in the English language to express my gratitude and confidence with German Auto Group of Alexandria on Pickett Street. After finding my perfect affordable 2010 Mercedes-Benz E350 4matic with 57,000 miles I took this car to a Mercedes-Benz dealership for a "pre-purchase inspection". The results were minor issues, windshield wipers need replacing and map update. I purchased the car. While in the dealership for an oil change shortly after the pre-purchase inspection I was informed the transmission, brakes, sway bars, engine mounts needed to be placed, and the engine was leaking oil. The dealership suggested I trade in for a new car. Needless to say I was upset. I went to CarMax in the hope of getting something for my very sick car. Rather than paying to sell my car I decided to get a second opinion. I called German Auto Group of Alexandria on a Saturday morning and spoke with Steve. We arranged a time and the car was dropped off. I was offered a ride home and a very nice man, Joe took me home. By Monday afternoon Steve called confirming the car needed major work. I asked Steve if the engine was strong enough to put this kind of work and money into it, his opinion was a clear and direct, yes. I had a warranty, Steve worked with the Company helping to get a section of these major repairs paid for. When there was something to report Steve kept me apprised each step of the way. A few days later Steve called, my car was done. Once again a very nice man Joe gave me a ride to pick-up my car. The car was clean inside and out and feeling brand new. Steve's clear, concise and accurate manner resonates through this Company. The Technician's are clearly knowledge and accurate from the diagnosis to the end result. My car and I were treated with respect. I don't give positive words unless they are earned. I wouldn't consider having any other garage work on my car. The prices are far more reasonable than a dealership. I'm a "lifer customer". It's my strong belief from experience, anyone enlisting the garage to repair a sick vehicle, will be as grateful as I am. read more

Update: I received a call from Adrian after writing this review offering to look at the vehicle again free of charge. They performed a technical bulletin from VW - hoping it will fix the issue. I brought my 2010 VW Jetta here on 12/20/2021 as the check engine light had come on and the car was throwing code P0106. They diagnosed that the vehicle needed a new MAP sensor. As P0106 commonly isn't an issue with the sensor itself, my husband questioned Adrian and asked if it could be oil leaking from the PCV - a common issue. He was told no, it was certainly just the sensor so we agreed to let the "experts" fix it for $749.41. When I left the car was still starting hard, but the check engine light was off (meaning they cleared it). I was back at the shop on 03/05/2022, approx 3 months later, for the same issue - check engine light on with code P0106. This time they said it was the PCV leaking oil on the sensor (the issue my husband had originally asked Adrian to check). We were assured this would fix it and haggled the price down to $423.75 as this issue should not have recurred. When I left, once again the car still started hard. I took my car to another shop for regularly scheduled service on 03/29/2022 and they informed me that the vehicle still had a passive fault for MAP sensor occurring - P0106. They recommended I take it back to the shop that did the service (German Auto Group) as their service did not fix the issue due to either a defective fix or them not diagnosing the issue correctly. Today (04/06/2022) my check engine light came on AGAIN and is throwing code P0106 AGAIN. I am requesting German Auto Group of Alexandria refund me the amount paid for both services as they did not fix my issue and I would like to take my car to a shop that can properly diagnose the issue and fix it. This is covered under warranty for both the sensor and the PCV. read more

The WORST EXPERIENCE, I called in to ask how much cost to replace the 4 shocks of my bmw and find out what was a small noise from the engine when the car is on parking mode. They Check the car and told me you have to change the shocks for $2500 ( like 9hrs labor ). About the engine noise they told me that first I have to pay to change the shocks. They charge me $120 to check something that I already known. That s ridiculous. They charge like BMW dealer. Very disappointed They didn t want to tell what s the engine noise unless pay $2500. I was looking for a place to get my 335 serviced as I was tired of the dealerships high prices as well as keeping my vehicle for three days each time I dropped it off. I found German Auto Group through Yelp and noticed the great reviews so, I thought I would give them a shot. I called and talked to Steve who was super nice and offered to look at my car the same day. My change brakes light came on so I called to have them look at the brakes. I purchased the car used in 2015 and trusted my vehicle message. It turns out that the dealership didn't reset the message after the last time the brakes were serviced which was before I purchased the vehicle. Steve called to let me know the brakes did not need changing at this time and had another half to full year left on them. Now, I would have gladly paid for new brakes since my car was telling me they were due but Steve didn't try to sell me. He was more than honest and only recommended a brake fluid change. These guys are the best! I came here few months ago for an oil change and was very happy with the service they provided. The waiting area is very comfy as well, they provide tea, coffee and different snacks. Today I came back thinking that I need to do an oil change every 3k miles but they checked everything and said that I need to change my oil ever 10k instead of just changing it and charging me for it. They have a well kept sitting area for customers which also include private workspaces. I was only there for an oil change on this occasion but will be back for other services for my Porsche Cayenne. Came in for a simple A service and left with just that. Not once was I up-sold on some phantom issue my entire visit. You'll see this common practice in well off areas as owners don't care to do the research and are willing to blindly pay to fix something that's not broken. These ladies and gentlemen were welcoming at the door, have refreshments readily available, and even small offices you can work in if you're going to wait on your car! I'd highly recommend them. The A service at a dealership and another shop were quoted between $250-350. I walked out of here with an A service and included car wash for under $180. Only took 1 hour in total as well. Would recommend to anyone and I will be returning! read more

Roughly 15 months after my last visit here to fix a water pump and thermostat issue, my car began complaining about low coolant. So I checked the coolant expansion tank and noticed that there is no coolant in there. Thinking back, I now recall smelling burnt coolant after parking the car from a long drive, on several occasions shortly (within 1000 miles) after the last service at German Auto Group. I never thought it was related to a coolant leak until the sensor alerted me so in September for the first time. The sensor alert occurred again within a 3 week period, which is why I went to this establishment today. I let the service rep know of the issue, and he agreed to do a pressure check. After waiting for 45 minutes and no sign of the rep, I asked the receptionist to speak with the rep. He came to the service lounge and asked me to follow him to his office. He explained that my radiator is cracked and the expansion tank has a leak. The cracked radiator and expansion tank failure seem to be too coincidental with the nature of the previous service at this establishment. I asked him if he can remedy the damage that their last service may have caused, and he immediately refused. He claimed that they did not touch any of these components, which is not true; at the very least the coolant was replaced. I also asked if the proper coolant was replaced in the last service, and he claimed that it was, which can no longer be physically verified. The reason I asked about the coolant is because BMW requires the OEM BMW coolant instead of the generic coolants that can be purchased in any auto store, because the latter is highly corrosive. The service rep also showed me the service ticket from my last visit, showing the coolant type that was replaced, however as mentioned before, whether or not genuine BMW coolant was replaced in the expansion tank and radiator cannot be verified. I did let the service rep know of the consequences of this interaction, which I meant to be a Yelp review, and he flew off the handle accusing me of threats, adding that he is no longer interested in servicing my car, and asked me to take my car and leave, which I did. And here is that honest review as promised. The service rep later left a response to this review, which I believe was blocked by Yelp due to the nature of its language. I will not be a customer ever again, because I don't trust this business. Representatives of the business owners often post comments on bad reviews with a superficial effort to remedy the situation. Don't be fooled by these comments. It's a tactic recommended by reputation restoration firms with the goal of undermining reviewers for their bad reviews. read more

Ok Yelpers... A few days ago - I went to start my BMW and all of a sudden I feel my BMW shaking and telling me its time to go to the emergency room! For years I've been going to Passport BMW whom I was happy with just not so happy once the bill comes along. Since moving to D.C. I have yet to find my reliable quality auto mechanic. I said to myself today is the day I will research the heavens for DMV/BMW mechanic and lone and behold I find German Auto Group of Alexandria. I was a bit skeptical at first. Nearly all 5 star reviews on Yelp... No seriously - it really lives up the hype! Upon arriving at German Auto Group of Alexandria via my AAA tow - I was greeted by Steve and Andrew. Steve who later I found out is the service manager literally jogged outside in the pouring rain to greet me. Big kudos for that! My first observation was the cleanliness and professionalism of their workers and a facility that really takes care of keeping an organized shop. Shortly thereafter, I was taken to their guest lounge which provides complimentary coffee, water and lite snacks. After about an hour the car was diagnosed with repairs needed to the ignition coil and spark plug. I sat down with Andrew and he walked me through the cost of the actual parts which was very straightforward. The cost of labor was very affordable considering the amount of work going into it. The repair was done as promised and Andrew went under the hood to show me the work that was done. I was very pleased with the individual attention that was provided. Andrew also said he would follow up in a week to ensure the vehicle was functioning without any issues. Overall really impressed with the customer service and work quality. I highly recommend German Auto Group the next time you are debating like I was to go to the dealership or not. read more

I don't think I can say I've ever had an auto repair experience like that at GAGA. The team there is extremely helpful, responsive, and willing to go the extra mile to make sure you leave 100% satisfied. Need an example? I was in an accident and my car door needed to be repaired and painted. "The body shop has extra paint and noticed your bumper could use a touch up," they said. "It's usually $500, but they will do it for $300. Are you interested?" I declined, but when I showed up to pick up my car, the bumper was painted, at no cost. "They owed us a favor," I was told. Another example. While in the shop, the rear door lock assembly malfunctioned. The manager ordered the part and called me when it came in. They then spent 15 minutes tinkering with the lock assembly until it was fixed. The Cost? A whopping $0.00. If you have a German vehicle, take it here. read more

We worked with Adrian Mungiu, Service Advisor to repair sensor issues presented by our Mercedes C300 with very satisfactory repair and noteworthy customer service. The initial contact was promptly responded, information gathered and a ballpark estimate given. We were able to get an appointment for service that day. Adrian was patient with our requests for information and provided a complete technical breakdown of the service to be provided for replacing a tire pressure sensor and for diagnosing a possible failure of our ABS sensor module ... unhappily not a cheap fix. He discussed the various options to repair now or postpone and alternatives for financing the repair; once diagnostic data showed a non communicating ABS sensor that was sure to fail our vehicle at the next state inspection. We are repeat German Auto customers; this service further reinforces our decision to conduct our major vehicle repairs at this authorized Mercedes service business. read more

I called on a Wednesday and spoke w/ Steven about my AC not functioning properly. I chose this center over another because they're opened on Saturdays. I came at 3:20 on a Thursday and they had my car fixed and washed by 4:40. The diagnosis + price for the AC recharge was $193. Thanks to a Yelp offer I saved $10, but Steven have me a $10 savings on parts then another $10 savings on labor. How awesome is he?!?! Good grief! They have a TV upfront, 3 separate guest workspaces, plus a kitchenette w/ plenty of snacks and beverages. Not to mention it's clean in here, like a dealership and no oil slicks on the floor. I didn't feel like I was accosted upon leaving. He didn't try to sale me anything, but was honest. The service has a 12 month or 12,000 mile warranty and I won't be charged for the diagnostic again if something happens w/ the AC. I have found my new go-to shop, FINALLY! Now my dad can relax and not feel the need to drive 3.5hrs to "save his baby girl". read more

Needed a new battery on a Saturday (holiday weekend) morning and the staff here was extremely responsive and helpful. I jump-started my car and drove over there after a preliminary phone call and they lined up a battery (my BMW X3 is 13 years young) and installed and did the usual code programming required on these cars. My car was washed and vacuumed and waiting for me less than 2 hours after dropping it off. They even texted me progress reports. Highly recommended. read more

What a find...a gem in the rough! Their estimates for work consistently beat others by 25 to 45 percent (including BMW dealer and two other well known German car repair shops in Alexandria). They repaired a rear-window regulator (stuck rear window) on my 2007 BMW 328i for 26 percent less than the next closest estimate, or savings of about $110, and replaced a micro-filter for 20 percent less, or $20 cheaper than best estimate from others. Repairs made the same day, in just a couple of hours. Beautiful brand new service center so hurry in for quick work at unbeatable prices before they start getting too busy. I discovered them while driving on South Pickett Street just steps from BMW of Alexandria. Dealer quality service, as all service reps, they proudly informed me, came from positions at various BMW and Mercedes dealerships in the area. ***update***. Wanted to give an update after the car had been fixed and driven for a few weeks. The repair has been perfect, nothing has gone wrong, no need to go back for follow up fixes for the same issues. (Which seemed to happen every time I used to take it to the dealer!). VERY, VERY happy. 2007 530xi. Love the car, not the mess of electronics that go wrong over time... But it's paid off, fun as heck to drive, so in the shop it went! (I'd seriously been considering selling it) Tired of being bent over at the local BMW dealer, I figured I'd try this brand new shop, right down the street. Professionalism was outstanding. My advisor Deangelo was very patient in explaining my cars issues. Offered to get me a rental once we knew they'd have the car a day or so. Nice. Just picked up the car, all seems great. No more full array of warning lights when I start the car! SOS works. Bluetooth works again. High battery drain warning gone. Yay! They also fixed a few minor issues for nothing. Reconnected a loose light, a low tire warning (due to pressure changes), etc. And the price was substantially lower than you know who down the street... The car came back washed--so clean and shiny. I've NEVER been able to get my rims as clean as they did. Impeccable, calm, totally non dealer atmosphere. Waiting area gorgeous. Think I found my new shop. Will follow up soon if need be. read more

I love you. So here is the story behind coming here. When I was first looking at buying my car I wanted to know who were the independent mechanics and found them. I just did not expect to need them until i really needed them but I got a slow leak in my tire and brought it to Porsche. Porsche refilled my tires and said there was no nail or leak. Low and behold two days later and my tyre light is back on. I refill and call here as there rating on yelp is perfect! I was able to get in right away and within 10 min of being there they found the 1" screw in my tire. Within 45 min my tire was patched and fixed. It will take me longer to drive home then it took for them to fix my car. Like I said at the beginning I love you and I will tell anyone who reads this you will love them too. read more

I took my car in for an oil change so I can't really comment on the quality of their work except that it took about an hour. The reason I am giving them only 3 stars (it seems to be a 5 star place) is that the front desk person and the lady who greeted me were not wearing masks which to me is shocking given that we are in the midst of a pandemic. By now anyone with a brain or a soul knows that masks are our best line of defense. I just felt it set a very bad example. I wore mine so why didn't they? Interestingly, I did see a mechanic who walked through and he was wearing one. The gentleman I spoke to behind the desk seemed nice enough but when I mentioned it gently he simply said he kept a distance of 6 feet which to me came across as dismissive, not to mention inaccurate and irresponsible. I think we can all agree that when we are indoors in a public setting that we should all be wearing masks by now. I had an old BMW X3 with nearly 300K miles on it. Me and that car had really gone places! I love it, but it was showin it's age and something had to be done about the constant oil leak ( I was losing a quart every fill up). My options were not good. Repair or replace were my two options. I looked into replacing my X3 with a three year old used X3. The cost of doing a 'replacement' was going to hit my pocket book big time. So, I looked for someone to repair my beloved car. German Auto Repair Group of Alexandria was the only shop bold enough to look at my car. Trust me on this. I live in Southern Maryland nearly two hours away from Alexandria. No one wanted to touch my car. 'Scrap it' was the most common response. I started my search locally and slowly, methodically expanded my search radius until I found the German Auto Repair Group. My directives to the German Auto Repair Group were simple: 'Fix my car' but the cost must be less than a replacement. They went to work. They replaced the motor with a brand-new factory motor (not a rebuilt), catalytic converter, clutch, brakes, shocks, springs, all the gaskets, filters and something on the frame I know nothing about. The worksheet was two pages, singled spaced of stuff they fixed. It wasn't an easy repair. And, It didn't happen overnight. But, I got my X3 back purring like a kitten and performing like it just left the showroom floor. And, I meant that! They detailed my car so it looked like it just left the showroom floor. But, the biggest thing?... They completed all the work for $3K less than the replacement cost!! I highly recommend the German Auto Repair Group. read more

Recently just moved to the area and been looking for an honest and knowledgable Indy shop. I had a misfire in my e92 over the weekend and brought the car in to get checked out. Turned out to be a bad ignition coil(damn things). I usually prefer to wrench on the car myself, but not having my tools in yet from the move, I decided to give this place a shot. Spoke with Shaabaz on the phone and he was able to provide me a detailed breakdown of the work and parts needed and was able to get me back on the road by the next day. The prices were reasonable and included a free wash and vacuum! I would definitely recommend coming through here if you have a BMW. read more
