When you show up as a German national to a German restaurant and you're being told, "no" even though 3/4 of the restaurant are empty and the no is because apparently they only take reservation. But nowhere on the website does it say that. Also it doesn't matter that you just drove an hour and 45 minutes amd are excited to try their food, that's just not on good customer service. Stammtisch is a Seaside treasure that you must visit. Stammtisch is an authentic German experience through and through. Husband runs the front, Frau runs the kitchen, the beer is cold and fresh, the decor puts smack in the middle of a German gasthof, the food is legit German and tasty (and filling), und the service is spectacular. We almost always get bier, but the wine selection is good. One of us almost always gets the Jaegerschnitzel, and the socials are worth it. All menu items are authentic and flavorful. There's no dining experience quite like this in the Monterey County. Food was incredible, like a home cooked German meal. The ambiance was great, down to every little detail. Both owners spent time greeting and checking with every table. This was my first time but it was obvious that there are some very happy regulars (also they take almost primarily reservations on the weekends which is telling as to the quality of both the food and service). Probably the best German/Bavarian meal I have ever had. This includes my Mother, Aunts and Grandma. They serve a very good beer, Weihenstephan Korbinian. In my experience, it's hard to find. But, I really haven't hunted for it. They are reservations only. But, we called 24 hours ahead and they found a place for us. Personally, I think the limited seating preserves the quality. It's a marvel. It being a German restaurant there must be a coo-coo clock. But, it's hard to find. The owner confessed that every child pulled them off the wall. It's there, well hidden. My hubby and i have been wanting to try this place for many years now. We first found it on yelp a few years ago while visiting the area and when we tried to go, they were too busy for walk ins. We tried 1-2 more times on different trips and again were turned town because they were too busy. We finally got a table this time we were visiting Monterey. They have very limited seating and only use half the restaurant which is about 10 tables. The restaurant is run fully by the chef and her husband who are both wonderful and very hospitable. the husband runs the front of the restaurant and services the guests and the wife is the chef. The restaurant is in an offbeat location near some plazas. The building itself looks like an office building next to some old apartment buildings. The interior are super cute and feels like you've been transported to a cute German country side to visit your German grandmother. The decor makes you feel warm and at home and comfy. We got medium sized stein beers to start. The lager was wonderful and my hubby had a dark beer. We ordered just one dish to share since we weren't super hungry and the dishes were large portions. We got the red cabbage stewed beef special. The Beef was was so tender and soft and delicious. The gravy had deep flavors but not too overwhelming. It had the perfect balance of flavor and paired nicely with the potatoes. The food is dense because it's mainly meats with potatoes and small side of cabbage. The only vegetables they have are slaw and pickled cabbage which were all authentic and delicious. Chef Claudia came to greet the guests and talked to us for a bit since it was a slow night. The couple were retired already and only run the restaurant for fun. They do it because they love their restaurant but that's one of the reasons they only host half the restaurant and have limited days and hours. Her concept is for everyone to enjoy a home cooked meal from a German grandmother and cook her hometown traditional recipes. Everything from food to service to the ambiance was excellent! We were warmly greeted and asked to choose a table. We were served very quickly. The food arrived piping hot and was so good! I'm a vegetarian and they had a marvelous vegetarian dish. I was pleasantly surprised. My son wanted to eat here for his 15th birthday. He's learning German. He enjoyed testing his skills. We meet the chef and she was so sweet. She said they usually give the birthday guest a shot of schnapps but since he's 15 she couldn't hear. If we were actually in Germany, it would be allowed. Horrible! DO NOT COME HERE!!! Here the story in a nutshell; wife called to make reservations. The guy on the phone said "come now". We packed up and drove to the restaurant. One we arrived the same man, I presume the owner, approached us coming very close to my wife. She told him who we were and he loudly said " I told you to come now, and that was half an hour ago. I can't serve you" and pointed angrily to his watch. I heard several other customers gasp. I grabbed my wife's arm as he was far too close to her and escorted her out. It really upset her as she knew reservations were important and called for that reason. It felt really surreal and I couldn't believe someone would be so rude and loud. I almost make an epic mistake and some words with the guy. But I took a breath and moved on . Finally able to get back after Covid problem and the food is still fantastic as ever. Service is great with Irwin telling jokes and just all around laugh. We had the plate with 3 sausage as appetizer and then I had the famous house plate while my friend had the Sauerbraten which they marinated it for a week and you can taste the spice in it. My friend and I will be back there again next month as we'll make it a monthly gather. Please make a reservation though as people who made reservation, it will get very busy so if you don't make a reservation, you run the risk of unable to get a seat and have to get it To-Go. read more

OMG!! Yum!! Must come back again This is a must go to German restaurant in the town of Seaside which is about 15 minutes north of Downtown Monterey and the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This German food is so good that you'd think you were in a small town in Germany. Beautiful arrangement of each entree. We ordered three Jaegerschnitzel (generous portion of crispy pork cutlet that covered almost 3/4 of a plate pounded to just the right thickness served with sliced, crispy potatoes, two kinds of sauerkraut and marinated shredded carrots. We also had the pork loin roast with a potato dumpling and two kinds of sauerkraut. Everything was spectacular and so delicious. Enough leftovers from jaegerschnitzel to enjoy for a light lunch. We also enjoyed a freshly made Black Forest Cake. Fresh cream alternated with chocolate cake and cherries. Oh so good!! Give this lovely restaurant a try..,reservations are highly recommended. A Yelp find! The last time we had German food this good (authentic) was in Munich a few years ago. Seriously, the best German restaurant we've found on the West Coast. Irwin and Claudia deliver an exceptional German dining experience from the decor to the menu. We started with the salad which had a traditional mix of red cabbage, carrots, cucumber, and dill. Excellent. The meal offerings were too hard to choose from, so I went with the sampler platter. A mix of schnitzel, sauerbraten and gravy, nürnberger sausages, and potatoes: SUPERB!! My wife had the special which was a smoked pork chop in an onion gravy with mashed potatoes. Wow. They also serve Hofbrãu and König on tap, which was so welcome after a day of golf. The only downside of this place is that they only had 1 option for fish (the fish herring appetizer) 1 option for chicken (chicken schnitzel) and 1 vegetarian option (basically all the sides: pickled veggies and starchy items). I was born and raised in Germany and I recommend this place!! I had the Wiener schnitzel and although it was a little darker colored than what I'm used to, it still tasted great. The Bratkartoffeln also tasted very authentic. But what I loved the most (and it even made me cry!) was the plain brown bread that came with the order! We took our good friends here last night and it couldn't have been a more pleasant experience. They had never had German food before so I said, "I know a place!" My wife is from Germany, and we both recently returned from several weeks there. That being said, I can honestly say that this little Seaside restaurant, Stammtisch, has some of the tastiest, most authentic, and thoroughly enjoyable German food this side of pond. Wunderbar!! The owner and his wife made us feel right at home, and he is a character, providing many laughs. I had the evening special, Goulash, and it was fantastic. My wife, being a vegetarian, was delighted by her vegetarian plate. Since one of our guests had no idea what to order, I suggested he order the Hausplatte, which has a little bit of everything--a huge portion. Loved it. I've been to Munich and Frankfurt a few times and eaten the roast pork at least once per trip. IMO it's one of the best pork dishes out there, not complicated, hearty, tender, and succulent. Unfortunately at Stammtisch it was not. Not sure if it was a different cut of pork but it was kind of hard and dry (it flaked), and the gravy fairly bland. The salad was good, as were the dumplings and other sides, but the star of the show fell flat. Service is good, but if you forget to specify the size of the beer (and they don't say on the menu how many oz/ml the sizes are), they will not ask you, and just give you a large. read more

I have received messages about my review. Several people who are not German or Austrian have contacted me saying that Wiener Schnitzel is made with a pork cutlet. Well those idiots should shut the hell up if they don't know our cuisine. An authentic Wiener Schnitzel is made with pounded veal cutlets. Also the big problem I have about this incident is that the owner claimed it was prepared in the authentic Austrian style. Well it definitely wasn't and the person who received it was offended because she doesn't eat pork. Furthermore someone may also may have a food allergy to pork and the fact that something was substituted is just pathetic. As a person who grew up in Germany I definitely would never recommend this restaurant. Other Schnitzels may use pork or chicken and can be prepared Viennese style but that's not a Wiener Schnitzel. read more

We used to spend a lot of time in Berlin so we were so excited to try this place. We saw the reviews that the owner could be rude/mean but took it with a grain of salt since Europe is not nearly as customer centric as the US, so some things that happen in European restaurants could be seen as rude here (e.g., having to get a server's attention, waiting a longer time between courses, not taking food requests, etc.) However, the reviews were not wrong. We arrived and the owner saw my friend with her service dog - a small 6lb dog that she was holding - and he immediately says no dogs, no exceptions. He even gave my friend a slight push on her shoulder to keep her from walking towards the table. He did asked for her papers but when she started to pull her card out from her purse he just walked away. Needless to say we walked out. read more
