Save yourself a trip and go to Sweetsmith! These cakes taste a little better than the grocery store, but I've had better desserts from Costco. Nice presentation and venue, but cakes are too traditional and plain for how big a reputation this place has. We had a slice of their chocolate truffle cake, tuxedo cake, and marion berry torte. The chocolate cakes were plain chocolate with regular buttercream and tasted like office cake. The torte was decent, but had a soggy bottom and seemed too dense. Finally got to eat here as an after first COVID vaccine treat. I had been wanting to visit after having sampled Konditorei cakes that Salem friends and colleagues brought to Portland for birthdays and occasions. It was great to have the huge Meier and Frank Cobb Salad and the sandwiches are great too! Everything fresh and well presented. The service is outstanding- pleasant, knowledgeable and efficient without rushing you. Brought a Black and White Mousse slice and an Old Fashioned Chocolate Cake slice home for later after staring at the cakes from the table! Both were excellent and too big to eat in one setting. Okay, you have heard the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Well, it isn't and doesn't need fixing. Took a coworker here and had to have the Iced Tea, Ribbon Loaf Sandwich, Ham and Navy Bean Soup and Champagne Cake. Yep. Same as always and through the years. My coworker had the same and raved about it. Service was great and there was no wait but the place was pretty full. I absolutely love this little bakery and cafe and am so happy to see it going strong for so many years. It is definitely someplace you don't want to miss if you're in Salem. Today my mother and I came in for a late breakfast. I had the croissant sandwich with egg, bacon, avocado acheese. My mom had the quiche Lorraine. They were generous portions and so delicious! If you're a light eater, you could split a breakfast sandwich. Both were served with a side of fresh fruit including blueberries, melon (surprisingly rIpe for this time of year), and raspberries. The selection of cheesecakes, tortes and layer cakes, and other bakery items (cookies, bars, etc) is phenomenal. It's a difficult decision but a good problem to have! We took two slices of cake to go, and again the portions are very generous and the cake is amazing! The service was excellent and the staff was warm and accommodating. This would have been a five star review if the slices of cake weren't $6 a slice, but don't let that deter you because the selection is huge and the flavors delicious! We walked away with about 7 difference flavors that we shared at a family gathering. The standouts were the coconut cake, so creamy and subtle in flavor. The tuxedo cake is rich and sultry. Even the most devout cake consumers will find it difficult to devour an entire slice of tuxedo cake. Ok so, the best thing I have to say about this place is their HUGE cake selection is great. No matter what you're in the mood for, they probably have a slice! The cakes themselves, from the couple I tried, were alright. Not bad at all. And you get a solid slice, which is nice. They do have a nice little shop. Gerry Frank's is my go-to bakery for all special occasion desserts. They have wonderful service, great-tasting food, and have always gone above and beyond my expectations. Their turtle cheesecake is so delicious that it's now on my mom's Birthday list every year -and when her friends stop by, she invites them in for a slice, so it's the gift that keeps on giving! This week, I ordered their champagne cake with raspberry filling for a special retirement party, with guests who flew in from all over the country. The employees were so helpful with all of my inquiries, and the owner even walked the cake out to the car for me during a very busy lunch hour. The cake was such a hit -everyone raved about how incredible it tasted, and several people commented that it was the best cake they'd ever had! TL;DR - delicious desserts with a high price tag - keep it for special occasions. ____________________ FOOD I ordered a slice of the Black and White Mousse Torte. The torte was deliciously light with an airy whipped cream on top. The balance of flavor and texture (the cakey bottom layer and the smooth mousse and cream) was great, too. The only bummer was the $6.75 price tag - it was definitely a large slice and I enjoyed it all, but $6.75 was still a bit of a shock when the bill came. My friends got the Turtle Brownie and a slice of Decadence (flourless chocolate), which they both enjoyed. They both took half home. I just slowly ate my entire slice. SPACE Nice, open seating area with plenty of natural light. We went over to look at the dessert cases to make our choices, but then sat down and a waitress came over to grab our orders. This is a homey type of place that was a 50/50 hit. Gary likes it and I don't. I didn't like the way the place smells...I expected a coffee and toast type of scent and it just wasn't. I kept trying to sound out the name of the place while we waited for our food. Gary had a burger and he liked it. I had grilled cheese that was soggy that I didn't like. I'll start with the positives---the staff are super friendly and it's a cozy little place to dine in. The cake is on the good side, but has WAY too much frosting. UPDATE: The 3 stars are now 2. We bought the Tiramisu. Not only did it not taste like Tiramisu, but it wasn't a good desert. It was really bready, dry, hardly any filling but the filling that was there was no good, bitter tasting. Most of their deserts are American, and on rare occasion when they do sell something traditionally French or Italian, it's complely Americanized, but even worse. The hazelnut deal I wrote about a few years ago was the only decent desert and no longer sold. We had just a couple basic decaf coffees and a small dessert, smaller than a slice of cake and it was about $11 before tip. The dessert we split was new and had no name, no label, no price haha. In fact, they were asking a customer what it tasted like, in order to tell us lol. Does management not allow employees to try the items so they may better describe them to customers? So they decided on a price $5, since it's smaller than a normal slice of cake, $2.75 each for decafs. It was a 3 layer cake that had the bread part, a mousse part (YUM) and a hazelnut cream on top (YUM YUM). Wish the cream was less sweet but otherwise everyone knows I am a sucker for anything praline-y (think German Storz praline nougat chocolate bars if you have $, or Nutella if you don't). If we go back and like our next trip there, I will increase the score to 4. But for now it's a 3 because it was so cold, lights were super bright like some grocery store, overall prices are a bit high for what it is and the cakes all looked very crumbly, not the one we ordered, but like every other one. I almost took a pic but opted not to. But the service was friendly and what we ordered was pretty good. read more

I am actually a bit sad to post this, but if you really think this is the place for cake, people of Salem, you're missing out! I went yesterday with a friend for lunch....so we had cake for lunch, shame on me, but that was the plan. I've heard so much about this place, I really was excited! And of course it's all decorated for Christmas, window boxes outside and all, very festive! Love the red, white, and black decor, it may be old, but it is timeless in my book, and I was feeling really good, and then they brought me my carrot cake, which I'd been thinking about for days....I have to say a boxed mix could have given it a run for the money! It was the blandest carrot cake I've ever had, and then thinking that the cream cheese frosting would help, even more disappointment...sure couldn't taste any cream cheese, just sugary sweet. Cute place but, I won't be going back, not when I have much better cake in my neighborhood at a little bitty, hole in the wall, too die for, breakfast and burger place! We stopped here because a friend recommended this place. Had a wonderful late lunch. They had three soups to choose from and we had the potato with bacon, with a half tuna sandwich..also, spinach, feta, and red pepper quiche with a green salad. Tried to eat light so we could have one of their delicious pies or cakes. Had two different kinds of chocolate peanut butter cheesecake and torte. Server was sweet and on the ball. I lived in Salem several years ago and when I am here on business, I often visit my old haunts. GF's Konditorei is one of these places. Unfortunately, my recent visit on 4/16 left a lot to be desired. We arrived late afternoon to an almost empty restaurant. I ordered my favorite dish, and one that the GFK is noted for, the ribbon loaf. Our waiter took our order, then disappeared...for 30 minutes. I finally got his attention and asked him when we could expect our dinners. His reply?: "we got a new guy in the kitchen. He was surprised that you ordered the ribbon loaf, so he's making it now." It's a little disconcerting to hear "new guy in the kitchen" but we gave him the benefit of the doubt...wish I hadn't. In the past, this beautiful dish is made with layers of chicken, ham, and egg salad, white and wheat bread, and "frosted" with smoked cream cheese. What arrived on my plate was a sloppy, lopsided, de-constructed mess. The ham was placed in the food processor with the rind, so there were little tough pieces of inedible ham rind throughout. It was supposed to come with a fruit cup but, we got chips. (the waiter did correct this oversight.) The price was also higher than what is advertised on their online menu. When the waiter asked about our dishes, I showed him my plate. He just smiled vaguely and repeated, "well the guy is new" then left. He avoided us for the rest of the meal. The Konditorei used to be well managed and you could tell that the wait staff had been there for years and really took a personal interest in the quality of both the food and service. It makes me feel bad when I have a lackluster experience at one of my favorite restaurants. I don't know if they have changed hands or aren't as attentive in their management. I've been eating desserts at Konditorei for years and years, never have I had a service issued as I did this evening. I know I shouldn't be rating this review solely on today's visit, however it's a review I've needed to write for a while in regards to the cakes along with todays experience. 1. Entered around 800pm. Place was half full with tables and no one was at the counter ordering to-go. We were seated at a table for two and then left and never checked on again. Even when I made eye contact with several waitresses and attempted to so of wave someone over, no one responded. We sat there for over 15 minutes and finally walked out. The ladies at the table next to us said "I don't blame you for leaving after all this time". During our wait we were privy to hear a gentleman waiter talk very loudly and assist an old school friend longer after we had been seated. I'm all for catching up, but on your employers dollar and when there are customers waiting, please take your reunion elsewhere. 2. We no longer order cake when we go. The reason why is because the cakes are consistently dry. I've only had success on Fridays when I know they have just had fresh cakes delivered for the weekend rush. I also know one of the worst day is Mondays in regards to the driest cakes. We now have a family rule that you must only order a cheesecake since they are not dry. read more

Truly disgusting food. I ordered a club sandwich. It came on store-type cheap "wheat" bread -- the kind that is made brown with caramel color instead of "wheat" -- and it wasn't toasted. There was a slice of store-bought turkey and a piece of Swiss cheese on each of the two levels of the sandwich. There was no bacon. It tasted like chemicals due to the completely-out-of-a-package ingredients. Store-bought chips came with it; they were OK. Pickle was -- surprise! -- a nasty, over-cooked green job. Ate with four family members; everybody else's food was similarly horrible. Desserts look good but are dry and stale. NOT RECOMMENDED. Also, one of the owners, Gerry Frank (namesake of Gerry's Franks, the $3.95 hotdog menu option: yes, really) writes a yearly book about New York City. Err, I live in New York, and I really do not recommend his book. Who wants food advice from a man whose own food is so terrible? Case in point: He thinks that Kwan's, across the street from the Konditorei, is "the best Asian food in Oregon." Right. Some people know WHY he thinks that, but it's unprintable in public, and has absolutely nothing to do with Kwan's menu. read more

I came here for dessert after dinner at the Spaghetti Warehouse (now closed) and after dinner at DaVincis. The service has always been very friendly but the price is ridiculous. $5.95 for a slice of cake? Even the cashier agreed with me when I exclaimed my disbelief at the total of our slices. I've had the champagne raspberry, lemon cream, raspberry cheesecake, and I think some chocolate one but I forgot what it was called. My sister, mom and me stopped in here yesterday for lunch. We were seated within 10 minutes and the waitress took our drink orders within 10 minutes which wasn't bad but then things went downhill. We waited 30 more minutes to receive our drinks (2 waters and a lemonade) and hadn't even ordered yet. By the time the the table behind us, who were seated after us, got their drinks and ordered, and we still hadn't, we were pretty miffed. My sister had to get back to work so we just got up and left. The clincher is when we were on our way back to her work, she thought she might have left her cell phone on the table. So she called them and the lady curtly asked if we were the three ladies that left. When she said yes and she was almost positive she left the phone, the waitress said "Well, if someone picked it up, it's not my problem." Horrible and rude service! read more

Went to The Konditorei several times when we lived in Salem so stopped by for a sweet treat to enjoy on my way back to Portland. I bought a molasses cookie and it was very chewy with molasses-y. I would have preferred to find these cookies fresh in the display are rather than plastic wrapped but I took a chance and found it quite fresh. The pastries in the case looked inviting- lemon coconut bars, blondies- yummy looking cakes; the place was full at 2:30 in the afternoon so it must be good for lunch or tea time. Inviting, filled with that unmistakable smell of pastries baked on the premises. A good choice to tempt a sweet splurge. read more

I can't vouch for the other food that's served here, but for the record, Konditorei is predominantly a cake shop. They have about a million different kinds of cake of which you can order a slice. Quite a large piece runs for about $5, which is cheaper than the famed desserts at Papa Hayden, and arguably much better. It's not uncommon for people to line up from the counter to the door just to get a piece to go. Hell, I've done it several times. And it's worth it. The cake is rich, but so delicious, you'd probably eat it anyway. Just remember to get a huge glass of milk. read more

I used to come here for dessert when I was in college, and just went back during my most recent trip to Salem. My usual is the chocolate raspberry cake, which is pretty good, but I wanted a second slice to take with me, so I asked for a recommendation and left with a slice of Ganache. Oh. Man. The ganache is probably one of the better slices of cake I have EVER eaten. Moist, chocolaty, deliciousness. The chocolate raspberry cowers in comparison. I dinged this place a star because I also got a red velvet cupcake and was pretty disappointed since the other cakes I've had from here set the bar pretty high. But overall, I love it.
