This is more for the pharmacy staff than the actual Giant Store. I have found two of the three individuals (a middle aged woman and man, presumably the pharmacist) staffing the counter to be rude, judgmental and insulting. The third individual (a younger dark haired woman) to be pleasant and sympathetic - and this review isn't about her. I suffer from a pre-existing condition that requires me to take opioids. My doctor (and my insurance company) requires me to sign a document that has me use the same pharmacy to fill the narcotic prescriptions every 30 days. It was my great mistake that I chose this Giant. On one occasion, my doctor wrote a prescription for a fentanyl patch, to help me manage my pain. The woman responded in a very catty a judgmental tone - you know we only give these patches to people who are dying. Shocked, at her insensitive statement, I asked her if she wanted to call my doctor - because I need help managing my pain. She said that she didn't want to call my doctor, but wanted to make sure that I knew this was serious medication. I suppose that passed for "drug counseling", but it felt like she was accusing me of something nepharous and her tone was hurtful. I am dying from this condition, I did not need her to point that fact out to me. I let her hurtfulness go, because everyone has a bad day (and she certainly helped make mine worse). I know that we, as a country, are facing an opioid epidemic and she has to be vigilant. But today, I had some trouble filling a prescription (granted it was complicated by the fact that it was a new opioid prescription - that was different but too close to fill because of an earlier written script.) When they told me they couldn't fill the prescription, I went back to my doctor and her re-wrote the prescription for something else (but stil a narcotic). I then returned to the pharmacy where they pharmacist "pretended" to check his supplies and told me that he did not have the medicine. I had to go elsewhere to have it filled. He was very rude and short with me, and a terrible actor because he was unconvincing in his brief "search" for my medication. He practically threw the prescriptions back at me, then turned his back and walked away before I could say anything else. I know that they (the pharmacy workers) are subject to a lot of regulations, and I don't fault them for not filling my prescription. I want to be very clear about that. I fault these two individuals for their lack of professionalism and compassion. There are a lot of very difficult rules and restrictions about narcotics that even my doctor didn't know about. They could, as they work in the field, helped me navigate the difficult waters (I have been filling narcotic scripts written by the same doctor every 30 days for the past 2 years). Instead they were hurtful, overtly judgmental and condescending. I am suffering physically - and they added unneeded emotional tribulations to my existing pain. Shame on them both. read more

Y'all, this is where it's at. This giant is open 24 hours, and has an ice cream aisle that is quite expansive. They have a nice sized baking section, sushi that isn't bad for it being a grocery store, a pharmacy, a Starbucks, and even flower shop that will make corsages for prom. read more

For convenience and variety, I'd give them 5-stars. It's my go-to store. But the express lines are absolutely the worst. The word "express" tends to imply speed in checkout, right? Wrong. Inevitably, I'm stuck behind some elderly person that can't figure out how to use the debit card machine properly or whose coupon didn't validate. Or the person who didn't realize it was a 15 item or less line. For the love of God, please make one express lane cash only so I can get in and out of there with my usual 5 items or less in 10 minutes as opposed to 20. read more

Every time that I come here, I find something wrong or something to complain about. The lines suck, and despite having tons of registers open as well as self check out lines, I find myself here for way longer than I'd like to be. People at the help desk or whatever it is (between the deli and the check out lines) are rarely helpful. I had to use Western Union once and the whole process was so frustrating (people disappearing as I wrote out forms, other people coming back to help me that had no idea what I was talking about, giving me a hard time...) that I just gave up. Recently I was here and there was construction going on inside the store... Which is fine, I get it. But they didn't have areas with signs to say it was closed or areas roped off. So I walked down an aisle to grab something and the construction workers didn't tell me to move or that I needed to grab what I needed and go- but they kept saying something along the lines of "these stupid customers need to be out of our way". And the Giant workers basically ignored the fact that anything was going on and stayed at the other end of the store. Hey jerk, there was nothing here saying I couldn't be here. I turned the corner and stumbled upon you guys, I wouldn't have bothered if there was a sign or tape or SOMETHING telling me not to be here. Unfortunately, Mclean doesn't have many other options for grocery shopping- and most people that come here have been coming for years- if you're not willing to drive over to the new place (not Giant) off of Magarity. read more

I'm surprised with all of the renovations that are going on with this place. I mean, I don't show up here for a couple of months and BLAMMO, it's different. Starbucks - a flash in the pan. The produce section? Changed again. The wine/beer area? CHANGED. Either way, I guess they have to cater to their customers - after all, we are in McLean. Oh, and did I mention the valet parking they introduced? I always go here if I need something in a pinch and Giant has never disappointed. read more

I'm usually not a fan of Giant, but this one is pretty great for one reason and one reason only: It never gets crowded. I've been there on weeknights, Sunday afternoons, and other times when grocery stores get hectic, and this one is always pleasant, quiet, and not choatic at all. Oddly, they have valet parking, but I guess that's just to show off their McLeanness. And because it's in an uncrowded area, parking is always easy, making the valet situation even the more odd. read more

Rohan Siddhanti, Cornell University I want to specifically write this review for the ethnic community in the northern virginia area, asians and indians. we are used to going to our various ethnic stores in order to get the exact foods we need for cultural dishes, but the giant has adapted that market and started to provide the things we need. they have, for more than one year now, had an aisle that is dedicated solely to foods that are usually found in culturally-specific stores. additionally, they have tons of frozen foods, and new vegetables that you normally wouldn't think to find at giant. only thing is, it's not cheap. it's a bit above average as far as prices go for a grocery store. then again, you are paying for the convenience of going to only one store, and being able to buy whatever you want, pretty much. read more

I have been shopping at this Giant for years but just recently something happened that I needed to bring to the public's attention. I usually use the self-check aisle and have to stop the Giant employees from bagging my groceries in the plastic bags because I bring my own fabric bags. Once I stop them, they will walk away and do something else. However, the other day, I mentioned to the employee that I could bag it because I had my fabric bags in the shopping cart under all my groceries. She took the few extra steps to come up to my cart and grab the bags from me so she could start and finish bagging my groceries. This was the first time this has ever happened and I was floored. The other day, though, my Giant experience changed 100% with the employee coming up to my cart, grabbing my bags and bagging all my groceries. read more

I have been shopping at the Giant in McLean for 15-20 years. The customer service has really become non-existent. There's very little help in the store. Always, no matter the time of day, there are only 1 or 2 check-outs opened. They want you to check yourself out, or do your own bagging. I shop once a week and it's too hard to check out a full cart by myself. I don't work there. They should provide these services. I have started bagging groceries, just to move the process along because there's a line in back of me. Twice in the last month, I've had the checker finish scanning and stand there and watch me bag without helping. I'm done with Giant. There are 2 Safeways, a Harris Teeter, a Whole Foods, and a Wegmans within 2 miles of the Giant. I'm changing stores. read more

One of the better Giants in the Bethesda area - I drive past 3 other Giants to shop at this one. There are negatives - older store, very limited organic produce - but this Giant has the best staff in the area, which makes a huge difference. On several occasions, I've had to ask where a specific product is and to a person, the staff here drop what they're doing to help you find it (in contrast to Westbard, where one of the staff actually responded "I have no idea" and then walked away). It probably boils down to the management, which always seems to be on the floor and actively involved in stocking and handling issues. read more

Every year we collect food for SHARE local food bank at this Giant . This year Shahid Ahmadi who works there made all the difference. They pre packed over 525 bags and pre sold them , making it a really great and organized collection ! It's great when people take pride in what they do ! read more

Good grocery store for most basic stuff. It's bright, clean, easy to shop. And, they don't move things around too often...which drives me crazy with some grocery stores. Good variety. Upscale shopping at it's best. they have gluten free items and a wonderful produce isle. The customers here are living in the Beverly hills of the East coast. They demand great service regardless of how busy it is. The workers are incredibly patient and receptive. The managers are hard working people. The store isn't as big as Walmart or Target but they compete in the same line with these other cheaper grocery stores. A very popular place for the neighborhood and it has a great community feel to it. read more

I was very disappointed by the way they handled an item they failed to bag for me. I had bought a pound of turkey and paid for it but it was not bagged. When I called about it they took my phone number and never called me back! They never should have even indicated that they cared. I will not shop there again! read more

How can that store be rated 5 stars? I am going there for more than 10 years now and I can tell you that it is managed by a bunch of arrogant and incompetent thugs. They disrespect women, they don't help you when you need it, and they refuse to take any responsibility for their attitude when they are confronted with their wrong-doings. I have been called a BITCH by an employee -Michelle- who called me out of the blue on my cell phone to talk to me about free shipping. She didn't understand a flying shit of what I was explaining to her and she hung up at me after calling me: "you, bitch!! . I couldn't understand her because of her accent. Am a I racist for telling her that I don't understand her accent or am I the client who has been interrupted by a phone call? That is their problem. Their hide their incompetence behind excessive PC arguments. I called the pharmacy, because I needed a refill and would have loved it to use the free shipping promotion. Snow is dangerous on the roads today and I am working at home. The other employee was surprised that Michelle said that, and she gave me the usual "dont use that word with me" when I was just telling what happened with Michelle. It took her a long time to find my name in the Giant's Pharmacy computer. I dont know why. She said there was no free shipping or any promotion about shipping today. Basically, I am said that I am the crazy one. I call the manager -Joe Donati- who tries his best to cover his employees. He doubts. He kinda call me a lier. He calls me back and says there is no free shipping today. Ok fine. That is not my problem! I have been said "you, bitch" by one of his employees. I give him the phone number of the Michelle who called me. 703-403-9232. He says: "Ok Mam, have a good day." End of the story. He wont investigate, there will be no sanctions, they will continue to treat the clients like bitches to milk. And, of course, I am the bad one. That is totally upside-down. They call beforehand to double check orders placed online and are happy to adjust as needed. When calling the meat department to order wagyu briskets, I was answered by less that knowledgeable employee, that directs me to call back when the meat manager is there. I then ask to take my name and number and he was unable to that. He then plays like he is unable to hear me and hangs up. I've been going to this Giant on and off for nearly 20 years, and I'm surprised by all of the mediocre reviews. There are numerous grocery stores in McLean -- a Safeway also in McLean, Balducci's, there used to be a Giant Gourmet. A little further away is a mega-Safeway over on Colshire Drive, a Harris Teeter in Tysons, and further than that, a couple of Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. This Giant in my opinion is the best of the lot, it is the perfect combination of a huge and well stocked grocery store for your daily shopping, but with enough quality items that you can get some fancy items that you need without paying too much. There are enough checkout registers that lines are rarely long, and after 3 expansions the place is huge and has an enormous selection of daily items. Most grocery stores have the same dry goods, what differentiates them for me is the produce, fish, meat, and prepared items. This Giant has one of the better seafood counters in the area for routine use when you are on a budget -- you won't find a wide selection of $20/lb sea bass and yellowfin tuna, but you'll always find 5-10 varieties of fish and shellfish in the $6-12 per pound range. Most of it is previously frozen, but most of it is also wild caught and high quality. The produce section is one of the best in the area, with enough organic items to give you an organic option for most common items,but they don't force you to pay $10 for a head of lettuce. The meat department has always been great, besides having a wide variety of items on display at what I think are good prices, they sometimes have great sales (i.e. pork shoulder for $1.59/lb), and the folks in the back can usually make custom cuts for you or find you something in quantity (I once saw someone buy 20 pounds of ribeye steaks). The bakery is also good, with good (not great) baguettes and at least 20 varieties of bread with pastries, etc. Again you're not going to find high end exclusive items but a wide array of quality routine items. You won't find certain gourmet items like foie gras or truffles, but you can usually find that at the Balducci's down the street -- but you can't shop at Balducci's for your routine items or you'd pay 2-3x as much. You also won't find organic grass-fed beef or game meats, but The Organic Butcher around the corner has that. The wine selection is "good not great", but then you've got Total Wine across the street if you want something special or in large quantities. At this Giant you can buy nearly everything that you can at the miserable CVS next door. From talking to the employees, this Giant is considered a flagship store by Ahold, the Dutch company that owns the chain, and they pull out all the stops, they even added valet parking recently. The store also employs the mentally handicapped through a sponsored program, which I think is unusual and very socially responsible. I have occasionally tried shopping at other grocery stores but really prefer this place and keep coming back. read more

Long before meeting my husband, he found this Giant while on the quest to find the 24oz DMD 6-pack. He searched high and low, in person and Internet, and he came across this store--and his life was changed. He had he found his holy grail: a community that had his soda, a beer store, a hardware store, his bank, the USPS, all within a block of each other. And it didn't even matter that he lived in Silver Spring, MD--he had found his shopping center. And when this store regularly ran out of his sized DMD, he emailed them, and the manager called him promptly. (Most likely because this crazy man had not so much emailed a single request as he had begun a campaign for his DMD.) So, flash forward a few years, we start dating, and, yeah, this guy is a bit crazy with his early-morning long-distance Saturday shopping routine. (Engineer--enough said.) And now I get it. This is a great store. It's super clean, it has great customer service; the produce and meat departments are fantastic (all are, really, but we spend more time with those fine folks). The front service staff is agile, efficient, and very friendly; and God bless the Starbucks crew for putting up with such lines and special requests. And yes, it is very convenient, despite being a beltway away. We would go early Saturday morning to avoid the crowds; but when we've been knocked off schedule, we still found the crowds manageable because they're friendly, good-humored folks. Mostly. And now we're moving far away. We made an off-schedule trip here the other day because the hubs wanted to say goodbye. That's how much this Giant meant to him. Hahaha read more

Is it a coincidence that "Giant" and "Ghetto" both start with the letter "G"? I think not, but there are exceptions to every rule, and such is the case with the McLean Giant. This is actually a pretty decent grocery store. It's still nowhere near Whole Foods or even Harris Teeter. It's more on par with a nicer Safeway. It's a large store so they have decent selection, including a few higher end items which are never stocked at other Giant locations. Staff are helpfull. Prices are good but not as cheap as walmart. The salad bar has selections of potato salad, pasta, meat, vegetables ... and us delicious. The ready meat like fried potatos and chicken was so yummy and a bit greasy. read more

This is my absolute favorite (And the only one I will ever go to) grocery store in the McLean-Falls Church area. I have gone to other grocery stores such as the Giant in the Falls Church Plaza Center and, especially, the Safeway off Magarity Road (I stopped going there when I saw a fly flying in the closed shelves holding the bagels and donuts). This Giant is very clean, super organized (though it does get annoying when they move items in different aisles and areas, but that is what the great customer service is there for), and the service is consistently excellent, especially Freddy at Starbucks. They have a variety of international items, and if you want something that is not particularly and regularly stocked, you can request it. They listen to people's requests often, and you can see the item in the store in about a month or so. Also, they are now competing with the Asian markets such as Great Wall and H-Mart, for there tofu is cheaper now than these stores. Plus, they are starting to sell beef bones, which is very convenient since one doesn't have to go to the butcher to make a delicious pot of soup. read more

Pretty decent the last few years--helpful staff but the corporate bosses and new manager seem to have something less in mind. They recently reset all the aisles and for two weeks the new aisle signs did not match where the grocieries were actually located. Why they moved the rows around is a mystery but we adapted, even to inexplicable narrowing of the aisles. Then we noticed that the meat department no longer offers ground sirloin--insisting that 90-10% is the same. It's not. Many other grocery items now seem missing as well. Staff at the store shake their heads and say, "that's a corporate decision". They've cut back on those bagging groceries at the same time they expanded self-check out. Those who are bagging are paying less and less attention to putting like things together in the bags and taking care in not bruising fruits. When there is no bagger, the check out person gets flustered with the growing lines as they try to bag and check out customers simultaneously. Finally, a recent trip had us buying chicken breasts that were still within the "sell-by' date. The chicken was, however, rotten, as we discovered at home. I asked the store manager how this could happen and he shrugged it off--"it happens all the time, what's the big deal?". "Are you upset because you want your money back?". We used to like going to this store but employees there now seem despondent and harried. Even the especially friendly and helpful staff now seem to be suffering low morale. This looks like a management problem that trickles down to customers. Service and selection have dropped while prices have gone up. We're looking now and thinking the ten mile drive to Wegmans might be worth it. read more

This week (3/14) the checkout registers were modified. Previously, the price of each item was shown in large type as it was entered. The credit card scanner made you clearly select 'credit' or 'debit'. The new system uses much smaller print; too small for my 84 year old eyes. And the charge mode does not explicitly show the form of charge being made. My receipt was correct but I felt confused during the checkout. Please review the system and see if it needs more tweaking. can't believe these reviews. I have grown up in the area and seen this store deteriorate over the years. They can't compete at all with wegmans and it's a shame. the selection of fresh vegetables is slim at best. Where did they all go? When I was growing up they had bins full of all sorts of veg but now, the bins are small the the selection is even smaller. The veg that is there, looks like it fell off the truck and was run over. bruised, damaged, rotting at times. yes it has wide isles and is close to home but I can believe the folks in mclean put up with this. for shame giant for shame. read more

this was just a short walk away from where we were staying and it ended up being amazing! we were able to go in and find great specials. it reminded us of our local winn dixie store, where you can given them your phone # and get alot of discounts. so the cashier advised us to put in a phone number so that we can receive the current sales and we did. specials received!! the variety of merchandise they have is amazing. at deli they even carry boar's head deli meats (reminded us of publix) it facilitated us with the ability to purchase snacks, sweets and other goodies we could take in our backpacks and stay away from the very expensive street vendors during our sight seeing!!! glad we were near this store. customer service was amazing. read more
