I usually order their sausage pizza because it's so good. Yesterday a woman ahead of me in line ordered a taco from this place. I didn't even know they had tacos! I grew up in Chicago neighborhood that had a lot of pizza slice places so I was thrilled to find Gigio's after moving to Evanston. Slices are big and a good value-- they're usually about eight to ten inches broad at the back and about ten inches from tip to crust. They recently upgraded the menu, adding beer, hot dogs, burgers, and more. I've had the Impossible Burger there several times and love it. It's been one of my favorite spots in Evanston. This is used to be one of my favorite Pizza places! Nice fluffy Cust! Good ingredients but the last few time it's like the place doesn't give a crap! Ordered a pizza today, sausage extra cheese! The crust was uncooked and like cardboard, there hardly any sausage but worse of it tasted like eating a block of salt totally inedible! Good New York style pizza. But best kept secret about Gigio's: their unexpected items are amazing. Some are specials and some are regular. The Cemita Poblana is out of this world, and they use happy chicken from Harrison's. They make their own ranch for their chicken tenders. Their lamb burger is shot through with mint and perfectly charred with super lemony mayo and delicate pickled onions. And the prices are reasonable. And their "grandma pizza" is on point. Bigger than the Gigio's in Uptown - Chicago, which was my first experience with Gigio's. This location gets more business as well, due to the area being more active + having a campus like Northwestern University near. Anyway; i compare my slice of pizza to eating a piece of toast! Crunchy, yes! Very! And slightly burnt! I would have rathered it being cold and soggy vs heated and burnt! For that; a regular yelper like me has to rate this place three stars instead of four! Im sure this Gigio's is a lot better than that, but sheesh! Luckily my teeth aren't weak, or I'd be toothless right now after eating that slice of pizza. Come on Gigio's; you can do better than that! As far as pizzerias go, you can't beat Gigios. Even though the pizza is New York style , it's delicious. Then consider that they offer "south of the border" items. Was in Evanston and had heard of Gigio's, so thought I'd give it a try. Ordered a sausage slice. Slice was a bit small, crust was ok. Sausage was different, sign at restaurant says its made by them. The sausage wasn't bad, but not as good as I've had at other pizzerias. Slice is pretty thin, which is fine for New York style. Just didn't think the taste was anything special. I see some people are saying this is NY style pizza. Some are saying it's not. My question is, who gives a frick?!?!? Does it taste good? Yes, it does! Move along. They aren't claiming to be either. After some asshat felt the need to write me about my last review of a self-proclaimed NY style pizza joint, I'm learning that people take that whole NY pizza crap entirely too seriously. If you want "authentic" NY style pizza so bad, I believe Jet Blue just increased their daily flights to NY. Do us a favor and opt for one way. I came in here just expecting to quell the rage of my empty belly. I didn't think there would be much to the pizza, but I was surprised. First, I was greeted with a cheery disposition. On a normal day - when I've eaten like a normal person - I could do just fine with one slice. The cheese on the pizza is excellent. It has a noticeable flavor and good texture. The sausage was great. The pepperoni they use tastes awful which affected the taste of the whole slice. So, I'm really happy I got the sausage or I would have thought their pizza was awful just from the pepperoni slice. The price is as great as their sausage pizza. It's $2.50/slice. Period. Which, makes perfect sense. What style of pizza is this? Good. This seems like a neighborhood staple that has been there for years, just like the bakery across the street. I can see why. The slices are a fair size, and I don't feel that they're overpriced at all. I had my first date here, and took my kids here on the way home from preschool. They now in college! We order from Gigio's at least 2x a week. The prices are EXCELLENT. Truly. Thank you. The staff is friendly. The food is the most amazing "fast food" ever (see below for details). The ONLY reason I would have to give four stars is because about 50% of the time they leave an item out of the order. We pick up so usually we get home and find out something is missing and go back or just live with it. They always apologize but they have never offered a refund or discount or anything. That would be good customer service. Also - about 30% of the time the fresh cut French fries are undercooked/raw :( On to the food: We are vegan so we usually get the Impossible burger, salads and fries. These items are all FANTASTIC AND AMAZING!!! Be sure to get the fresh cut French fries -divine! The salad is always crisp and delicious and the champagne vinegarette is outstanding! And the Impossible Burger is the most craveable, delicious vegan indulgence of all time. It tastes like I remember a Whopper tasing (although it has been a while). Our kids (not vegan) get either pizza (seems okay), chicken tenders (these look delicious and they are HUGE), chicken noodle soup (great), or meatball sandwich (they love it). Overall, my husband and I have enjoyed food from Gigio's. We're from the East Coast so It's our go-to place for NY-style pizza. My husband loves their sausage. Two of the three orders I placed in the past 6 months were a failure of both service and quality. The first time they failed was with a pizza I asked to be delivered at 7, but it arrived at 6:15 and was so undercooked the cheese hadn't even melted. The second failure was tonight when I ordered a pizza and two of their nightly specials. The order was about half an hour late, and one of the specials was missing. Only when I called did the rude lady taking the orders tell me they were out of the missing special. She offered no apology or compensation. After I demanded a refund she said it was done and hung up on me. The person taking orders had the maturity of a middle schooler - not the best representative and now they have lost my business. read more

Although I'm doing a terrible job of going vegan, I rarely stop into pizzerias for that reason. (Less cheese is the first step.) But my stomach wanted pizza, so in I went. I was pleasantly surprised to see an Impossible burger on the menu and got that instead. It was outstanding. The fries were too. If I am ever in this neighborhood again, which I hopefully will be for a gig I work on, this place may become dangerous to me. I will more than likely want an Impossible burger every single time I go in there again. It didn't need any extra condiments or anything. It was a 10 out of 10 with everything already on the sign. I had to check the "Impossible" wrapper on the burger a couple of times to make sure I didn't accidentally eat meat (15 years of none of it). I'd tasted Impossible meat before while making homemade lasagna but never bothered to use it for vegan burgers. Outstanding. And it doesn't even need cheese. The service was reasonably quick. Gigio's is a great pizza place in Evanston which has been there for decades. However, I suggest calling in for an order and not using the "Slice" website. The Slice website builds in a margin for pickup which is too long and results in a cold pizza. Tonight I ordered at 7p and it told to pick up at 756p. This much longer than normal and I picked up at 735p - at that point the pizza had been sitting and it was not warm in site of the fact I was 20 minutes early. This is an institution and the only pizza my NY husband enjoys. Unfortunately, their delivery system is the most mixed up bag of awful. We live close by but not so close that pick up makes sense. We've ordered directly from the store and the. Also through GrubHub. The store informed me a month ago they do have their own drivers so as not to pay the GrubHub up charge. Since then I've always called, received our delivery time and generally that's accurate. Tonight, I called the store after waiting an hour and half for the pizza. "Oh, it's farther than our delivery so we had to call a driver. It was picked up a few minutes ago." I said I really wish I would have known that prior to ordering! It doesn't seem that hard, even now, to properly set expectations. The worst was the attitude I received when suggesting they improve on their communication. If you're in the area, go get a slice. Gigio's: my reliable and dependable friend who I don't see very often, despite living just down the street. If you know me, you'll probably know that I hardly ever stay out late and that my fridge/freezer is always stuffed to the brim with things to eat. On the rare instances that I do end up going home after 11pm to an empty fridge, I stop in for a slice or two (okay, more like two - you know me too well!) One slice of pepperoni and one slice of sausage, thrown into the oven to warm and then placed on paper plates and stuffed into white paper bags for me to take home. The perfect grease-carb-cheese-meat ratio to bring me back to life after a day mostly fueled by caffeine. Sometimes, if you come at the right time, the people working will give you extra slices. This happened a few months ago, when visiting friends went in for a few slices and left with pretty much an entire pizza - complete with cheese, garlic, chili flake shakers in little tubs! Last night, at Evanston's Holiday Bash in the downtown area, I have to say this place did a great job of keeping our family toasty warm and our hungry tummies full. I ordered a slice of cheese pizza to keep it quick, my hubby a slice of veggie pizza, and the kids had cheeseburgers and onion rings. Daphne L's right about the pizza having a lot of flour on it. I think it has something to do with helping that crust have a special crispy crunch. It probably keeps the dough from sticking to the pan, which aids in helping that pizza coming out quickly - who knows. The pizza was just what I needed. Basic, but reliable. My hubby's slice was fully loaded with tons of green peppers - yum! Beyond generous in size, and I have to say it reminded me of Boston style pizza. Thin and loaded up. Cheeseburgers here are nice and hearty in size and cooked to perfection. Not overly cooked but nice and juicy. The onion rings were what I expected, and you sure to get a lot! Ask for a side of BBQ sauce, it's sweet and not too spicy. We had excellent service from the second we walked in the door. They brought our food to the table, which was unexpected considering how busy they were. Great bar food and lots of seating. Half of the room has picnic tables, which offers that indoor/outdoor type of atmosphere. Bathrooms...I'd probably hold it and hope to make it somewhere else. I do like that they have a key for the bathrooms, discouraging public use, but it was still a little on the gritty side.
