Someone told me Gilberto's was their favorite Mexican restaurant so I wanted to try it. The ambience is nice and more authentic. The chips were ok and salsa was blended. Not my favorite. We ordered 2 enchiladas-one chicken, one beef and another chicken enchilada with a chile relleno. The enchiladas were good but in a gravy like sauce. TLDR; good service, bad tasteless food. Do not recommend going here. I've driven past here a few times and got curious each time until the fateful day I got curious enough to stop here for dinner. The parking lot was close to empty, which should have been a sign, but that's sometimes normal for Roseburg. The inside atmosphere was nice with music playing. Décor helped bring in the atmosphere, and although the restaurant was nearly empty, we did have to wait a bit to be seated. Chips and salsa are served while you look over the menu. The chips were from a bag, and I'm not sure I have ever had salsa as bland as this. There were two different salsas, both looking like tomatoes blended up with water and poured into bowls. I tried to make it better by adding salt, pepper and some of the hot sauce, but it was a marginal improvement. There was a nice drink selection, however the drinks that came out were overpoweringly strong. Mine tasted like chemicals from a public pool. I got the veggie burritos, which fell apart as soon as I touched them. The rice that came with it looked as though it was blended up with water as well and scooped onto the plate with an ice cream scooper. I'm not sure I have ever had sautéed veggies this bland. I'm not sure how they made Mexican food as tasteless as they did. Roseburg is definitely not a hub for ethnic cuisine, but I promise there are better Mexican restaurants to go to. read more

Was travelling, tired of fast food, and passed by this place. At 5pm, the parking lot was empty. By the time I finished my meal, the dining room and patio were mostly full. Due to COVID, they are only seating at every other table. I was seated immediately, and served chips and salsa right away. The chips seemed fresh and had good flavor. The salsa was watery and without flavor. I was given an appropriate amount of time to review the menu, and the food was served hot. There was no timely follow-up after the food was served, and my plate sat on the table edge for some time before I was attended to again. The men's restroom was relatively clean. Unfortunately, it appeared as if someone vomited in one of the urinals. I would not have stayed for food if I had not already ordered. I selected a chimichanga dinner, with carne asada. The shell was fried to a perfect golden brown - light and flakey. The meat was flavorful, but a little salty. Both the rice and refried beans were overcooked (rice mushy, and beans like gritty paste). The lettuce was crisp, and tomato firm. The cost of this dinner plate was about $17.50. It included guacamole and sour cream, which would otherwise be $2 extra, EACH. In summary, the chimichanga itself was good but overall value is lacking. read more

This place is amazing! A friend of mine, who grew up in Roseburg, suggested we stop by on a roadtrip up to Seattle from SF and this place did not disappoint! I'm a bit of a Mexican food snob and had my misgivings about authenticity in southern Oregon. However I was glad to be proven wrong! We came by during lunch time, midweek, during COVID19 and there were several folks dining in. We sat out on the patio which was pleasant (minus the traffic). Our food was outstanding. While the house salsas were a bit bland, the entrees were out of this world. My partner had the Wally Burrito with the gravy on the side and raved about the dish. He cleaned his plate! The gravy wasn't spicy but provided a great amount of flavor. I had the Carne Asada (skirt steak) and thought the flavor was epic! The perfect char and right portion size. The homemade flour tortillas that came with it were also dense and chewy. Yum. But what really set the dish apart was the house-made habanero salsa! I like spicy food and mentioned it to our server. She went out of her way to whip this salsa up for me--- and it was outstanding! I doused my steak, rice, beans, and even the remaining chips with the salsa. So good! I live in coquille and in my opinion this place has the BEST menudo I have found from coos county, roseburg and bend oregon! They are very friendly when answering the phone and give AMAZING portions! It's sooo good I make the drive from coquille to get some menudo and for 9.50 each the portion size is AMAZING! & AMAZING flavor I ordered 2 things of menudo and pictured below is everything I was given with it! I even got a ton of salsa and beans and chips along with tortillas to go with my menudo! If you want great menudo this is the place to go!!!! read more

I grew up in Watsonville California. A mecca for delicious Mexican food. Giliberto's served me the nastiest Mexican food I've ever eaten in 60 years. Even the salsa was rancid. I purchased a $21 three combination plate. All of it tasted bad. Didn't eat my crispy taco. I mean I didn't even take a bite. The meat looked like it was scraped off the floor. Ordered a five dollar Pacifico draft beer, no swear it was a bud light. I thought I was going to get food poisoning. And like an idiot, I paid for it didn't say a thing and walked out. We were excited to try this place. Some of the great reviews are not quite accurate. Service is great. The two salsas have a strange aftertaste but edible for sure. It's very fine juicy salsa. I ordered carmarones con Ticino. Bacon wrapped shrimp. Typically it's on a bed of onions and peppers with cheese covering it all. Nope not what I got. Not worth the stop. Stopped into this town on our way up to Washington only to get berated and practically chased out of town. We used the parking lot in the back of the business. (Did not realize it was attached to the restaurant and totally understand they prefer customer parking only but it was not posted anywhere) walked to the other street to give ourselves and our dog a stretch during our journey. Two women who were loitering and smoking in their parking lot threw trash on the ground so we picked it up to be respectful to the space. The "manager" came out and started said that it's his property and told us to leave and what and very aggressively was trying to get us out. Started talking down to us and our animal. Only for the two littering women to call us names and to get out and go back where we came from. We even called to make sure they understood we had no intent to disrespect their property but the "manager" kept rambling on about how this is a small town and how people come through and treat it bad. We have a motto in our family when trying a Mexican restaurant we haven't been to before ..."if the chips, salsa & margaritas are good we'll stay". Gilberto's serves fresh made salsa which is fantastic, the chips were warm & crunchy & the margaritas were very good so of course we stayed & placed our food order. wow were we pleased with the food! As you can see from the attached pic, each chip of the nacho plate is decorated with goodness! No lumped up soggy nachos at Gilberto's. The pork was so flavorful my husband ordered pork tacos as well, which he loved. We have plans to take my mom & other family members back this weekend to try their shrimp nachos (which were highly recommended on an area social media page) as well as numerous other entrees. Very good. I had a bad experience here a long time ago, but things have redeemed themselves. The owner was waiting tables, and was super friendly, fast and made a great margarita. The nachos are what stands out here, each chip is individually loaded with beans, cheese, meat of choice, onion, tomatoe, sour cream, guacamole, and fresh jalapeno. Now, you cannot find nachos like these anywhere around here, they are special. I had a half order, which was a full meal for me. The full order must be huge. Excellent. The menu has alot of options and variety. The salsa was also outstanding, some of the best I've had at a Mexican restaurant. Very good. Give them a shot. read more

I just left after a good, and expensive lunch. I am an 80 year handicapped man, that struggles to walk. I forgot my wallet in my RV... I NOTIFIED MY SERVER.... and retrieved my wallet so I could pay the bill. When I returned I was treated like crap, because my server... thought I was going to run out on my bill. I informed him I was very insulted..... his response was well... you can't be too careful and still had a very nasty attitude. A very nice waitress too my payment, and when I asked if a lot of people ran out on their bills.... When I told her what happened. She said...she'd never seen it.. I LOVE Gilberto's. In almost 25 years of eating here, I've never had a bad meal. My 'go-to' meal is the guacamole quesadilla. Their salsa is always fresh and their handmade tortillas are the best. I've even been known to make a meal out of their tortillas and salsa. All their ingredients are always fresh and good. Update- Once again a great lunch. As always service was fast and friendly. Another thing I really like about Gilberto's is how clean it is. They keep the whole place including the restrooms well maintained. I hate going into some restaurants and seeing unmopped floors and filthy restrooms. It always makes me wonder how awful the kitchens must be if they keep the public areas that disgusting. Tonight my Mother and I ordered take out from this Mexican Restaurant. The person on the phone gave us a pick up time of 15 min. My mother lives fairly close so about 19 min elapsed and I left to pick up our order. When I arrived our order was ready and packaged neatly, the owner himself was there, Gilbert, to cash me out at the register. He was very nice and polite. The food I had was very poorly prepared. Albondigas (Meatball Soup) was more rice than soup and the meatballs were more rice than meat. Flavor was completely absent. Chips were out of a bag and not even warmed. Salsa tasted metallic as if it had been left in the can too long in the fridge. I lived most of my life where great Mexican food is everywhere, and I love it. THIS is NOT even average Mexican food. It is rather lacking in many ways. SEATING is really uncomfortable. I sat in a chair and it was so straight that I could not relax, so I tried a booth thinking I might move, and it was worse. The human body doesn't fit into a 90 degree angle chair. Seating tells me that they really want you to eat quickly and leave so they can get someone else in that table. As for me, I left quickly and won't be back. read more

So I came in here expecting a lot, due to family raving about how wonderful they are. That being said it's not a bad Mexican restaurant and I would come back here. Overall it has the look and feel of a Mexican restaurant. It doesn't look like they have ever spent the time or money to update anything here, as it all looks like it is original to when they first opened. Service isn't bad, but it doesn't stand out as anything special either. Nothing was exceptionally quick which is typically what Mexican restaurants are known for. Everyone ordered Margaritas (except me - not my favorite) but they did have a Mai Tai. I would say it was very mediocre at best. Kind of tasted like they were wanting to put their own spin on the drink and didn't quite come up with the right mix. The food presentation (nachos) was really nice, however the overall taste was just kind of bland. Not that it was bad in any way at all, but it wasn't special either. Price point of the food is right in line with what you would expect to pay at any Mexican restaurants. Literally my first time writing a YELP review. Never, had the motivation quit like this experience to actually take the time. I wish I could give it Negative stars to express the horrible, worst, food (generously speaking) as Gilberto's in Roseburg. My Fiancé and I went to Roseburg for a romantic birthday weekend in a sweet rental on the river. The only downside to our couple days away was making the horrible decision to eat at this restaurant. Literally, anything would have been better. Actually, eating nothing would be better. Pretty much what happened. After eating there we walked across the parking lot to Walgreens where I purchased a can of Campbells soup and ate that. The Food. Beans formed like an ice-cream scoop. Gray and granulated in color. No smooth texture. No sprinkled cheese. A scoop of what looked like mud mixed with gravel. Rice. Pinkish in color with literally no taste. No Mexican seasoning or spice. White rice slightly discolored and very wet. The meat in the "Quesadilla" (If you could call it that. A loosely folded in half large four tortilla with tons of shredded lettuce. No cheese to melt it together. Hence Quesadilla. No Queso. Under the pile of lettuce was wet, gray, worse than tasteless ground beef like I have never seen. In my 40-plus years on this planet I have never had any meal so horrible. Oh, and I did try and have a drink. To which after I selected a drink option from the list on the menu. The server looked confused as she had never heard of it. I pointed it out and she responded. "Oh, well, Gilberto is not here, and I don't know how to make that drink.:" I was about to change my selection, but she quickly reassured me. Saying, "I can do it. I have to learn some time." So, I figured everyone has to learn sometimes I will give it a go. It was beyond sweet. A goblet of white syrup and watered-down ice. The one thing I was able to ingest was a bottle of Modelo. I resorted back to the several decades ago when I would go to Mexico and eat and drink at questionable cantinas. Known trick, if all else fails... Get the beverages in the bottles. However, I will note: Not even the worst, sketchiest of restaurants in any country I have been to has had worse or more disgusting food than Gilberto's. Dirto's. read more

So here it is, my all time favorite Mexican place in all of Oregon. Unfortunately, I live 3 hours away now, but Gilberto's is a nostalgic place from my childhood through my adolescence, and now far into my adulthood. It is one of the only places that has remained quality, genuine, and the same - ALWAYS. No shortcuts on portions or ingredients, even the take over of the restaurant by Gilbert (the son of the previous owner in the family) hasn't changed their quality. He's always there, very upbeat and super friendly, and willing to go the extra mile to make your service great. And that my friends is why you must visit this place and keep it alive! That and I need to know that my favorite cheese enchiladas and flan will live on for many more years! The interior could probably use an update, although they do have an outside patio now which is nice in the summer. The waitstaff can sometimes be slow, but hey- things are home cooked here. And the salsa could use some cilantro, but it's been made the same way for the past 30 years and they haven't changed it yet, so cilantro free salsa it is! What should always stay the same is the rest of their food! Let me start with... Their nachos- You will NEVER get nachos anywhere else that are made with more finesse and love than these. They literally put a bite of every single ingredient on EVERY SINGLE CHIP! Yes, you read that right. Now let that sink in. On top of that, they're huge. They may not look it, but a half order can feed just me for 2-3 meals. I always get- beans, cheese, beef, guac, and sourcream. It's the perfect combo! Their tortillas- Soft, fresh, hand-made flour tortillas... you can't ask for anything better. Other than a pat of butter in which they used to be served with, and still should be *hint, hint* Their beef- It's delectable, it's mystical, and something like having the Mexican version of your mama's pot roast shoved in a taco or placed on a nacho, or smothered in a burrito. It's so freaking good I'm getting hungry describing it. Screw the chicken, get the BEEF! Their enchiladas- The sauce, the goodness, the love, a reason I breathe. Until you have these enchiladas and understand them, you will never understand. I am a connoisseur of enchiladas, and these babies set the bar so early on in my life that very few stand close to them. I want you to understand that these are different from any you have and will probably ever eat, unless you go to where the Duarte's hail from in Mexico and just maybe you'll find some there. When I see people complain about the sauce, it's because 1- they misunderstand the sauce, 2- their palates are just inferior. This is not a "sauce" but rather a gravy. It's like a mexican gravy from heaven that should be worshiped and smothered on everything you could put in its glorious way. It's soft, subtle, and enhancing to the flavors you choose to mix it with. There is nothing worse than an over chili-powdered out, bright red, palate ruining, overpowering abomination of an enchilada sauce (which all other restaurants in these regions serve). At Gilbertos you'll find nothing like that, so give it a chance and stop having expectations of crappy Mexican food. You might find that you actually like it! I always order the cheese enchiladas with no onions (why do they even put onions in enchiladas, I can't understand), in flour tortillas instead of corn. I will travel hundreds of miles for these enchiladas, and I have time and time again. The flan- I can't even with this, it's so good it'll make you squeal! It's so soft, so smooth, cold, with a hint of vanilla, a touch of whipped cream. It's surrounded by a generous puddle of thin homemade caramel sauce that enhances every single bite. If you don't try their flan, you aren't truly living. The rest of their food is great! I've had many things, I love their beef tacos, avocado tostadas, burritos of many, and chili rellenos. But I generally stick with my beloved enchiladas, a beef taco, and a flan. Then I eat this meal for 4 meals, because the portions here are huge! Remember it's "gravy" not sauce, and you'll be okay. Really my favorite but some crazy people don't like some of the things like the salsa which is fresh tomato and not cooked and the beans are thicker and in a scoop as apposed to runny. I was really very disappointed with this place. Food was alright. My friend got a Chile Relano (not sure how to spell it) and it was basically slop. Whatever sauce they put on it, made it mushy and not very appealing. I got a burrito. Their burrito sauce was different, but very good. Probably the biggest complaint I have, is the tables/chairs/booths are THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE things I have EVER sat at. Theyre straight up and down and MAJORLY stiff. We couldn't even properly try to enjoy our meal. Wasn't very clean either. We sat at a booth and our table still had food residue that needed wiped up. Definitely not my favorite place to eat.
