The Gilded Unicorn is in the basement of the Montvale Hotel on Monroe and 1st. The atmosphere is eclectic but very neat. The walls are filled with paintings with all different frames. There's a wall of small mirrors, each in a different frame. As usual, we started off with a cocktail. We both tried their O'Julius (rum, curacao, vanilla, cream, citrus, orange bitters, nutmeg). It was tasty. For an appetizer, we tried their take on deviled eggs (stuffed eggs with smoky whipped yolks, topped with maple chili & applewood bacon). They were interesting, but not something we would order again. For our entree, we both chose their Tater Tot casserole (braised brisket & roasted wild mushrooms tossed in sherry cream sauce and herbs. Topped with tots & aged cheddar, baked golden brown and finished with green onions, pickled jalapenos, and caramelized onions). Though we both ordered the same dish, our plates were each a different style and pattern, adding to the eclectic atmosphere. The food was delicious and we both have plenty of leftovers. What a fun and unique restaurant! You walk downstairs in to what feels like it used to be a speak easy. It feels secret and fun. The food is delicious. I definitely recommend the Bocce rolls, the deviled eggs and the bacon wrapped dates as starters. The bocce rolls have melted cheese inside that you can dip into a cheese sauce. So good! For an entire I had the braised brisket magical macaroni and cheese with the Gouda cheese they used it was also very tasty! Came to this restaurant solely because of the name, and it was recommended by locals. Definitely not a disappointment. It has a cozy atmosphere with a speakeasy feel. Staff are very professional, and definitely had smiles. Prompt service on an early evening arrival with no reservation. Tender with a beautifully complimentary season on a bed of crispy kale. The mac and cheese is definitely made in house. It was creamy and i loved the spiral noodles. I was nervous about ordering the Chicken Ala King, as I didn't want the typical Asian meal, but I wanted to try experiment. And I was not disappointed. The rice was the creamiest and most decadent rice I have tasted with the perfect 'crunch' of peas and carrots incorporated. topped with crispy and moist chicken that was not over done, along with Mushrooms that could be the main attraction as well. Though the Peruvian peppers were the highlight that brought a sweet burst to each bite. Food-wise - was definitely not disappointed. Service was on par and very appreciated. The base layer featured braised brisket which was nothing short of amazing, and the sherry / mushroom cream sauce pulled everything together splendidly. Portion was a tad small IMO, but at $18 I'd say a good value given the quality of ingredients and the meat portion itself was generous. Cobb salad was bad. Came with a pile of kimchi on the side which wasn't advertised, and this odd addition threw the plate off-balance. The kimchi-marinated eggs didn't carry much kimchi flavor. Salad was dry overall, and the dressing was on the bitter side. A few nasty butt-ends of lettuce ended up on the plate as well which is damn near inexcusable imho. Bocce Rolls were hot and yummy; excellent quality bread with a great "pull." Server recommended melty gouda dipping sauce and marinara which were both excellent additions, but added $1.50 to the final bill FYI. Wild salmon was ok. There were a few wads of something bitter and nasty on the side of the plate which could have been the oyster potato hash. Would not recommend but it's probably a matter of taste. Atmosphere is super cool. Others have already commented on it at length so I won't go into much detail; suffice it to say it's a wonderful and unique setting to enjoy a meal. read more

Our snotty young waitress in her short black skirt pops off with big attitude and tells us "we can go somewhere else!" Well guess what we did? We got out check and did just that. The small Lounge is the disembarkation point of the elevator from the Montvale Hotel. It also contains the Gilded Unicorn's restrooms. The restrooms are opened with a code. So, every few minutes throughout our dinner someone whisked by leaving the elevator or stopped to key in the code for the bathroom, resulting in loud beeping. We ordered the mushroom pot pie, tater tots casserole and deviled eggs. The eggs and tots were pretty tasty. The pot pie was flavorless and the thick crust collapsed in the center. The restaurant proper is quite attractive and the menu deserves exploration. Do yourself a favor and avoid the nasty trap of a "lounge". read more

I read the Yelp reviews for the Gilded Unicorn and was looking forward to visiting. When we arrived we were told there would be at least a 20 minute wait, even though there were empty tables. This was do to short staffing. After about 20 minutes we were seated and ordered a number of items off the Happy Hour late night menu. We ordered the Deviled Eggs, Pea Salad, Unicorn Mac & Cheese, Tater Tot Casserole, and the potato chip sundae. Two people ordered two Happy Hour draft beers. Food was a mix of some success and a couple meeeh responses. I enjoyed the Peas Salad but thought everything else fell a little short. What I do respect is that the chef/kitchen staff takes chances with some ambitious dishes that are very creative. When you takes chances, sometimes it works and other times it just doesn't. When the tan came there was multiple overcharges including $19 for two Happy Hour beers that were undrinkable , according to a bartender in our group. An attempt was made to correct the errors, but left another error. .. Our server was excellent and clearly exhausted due to understaffing. The cocktails are unique (and good), the service was great and very helpful in guiding the menu. Only concern is that our waiter lost our debit card, we waited for about 35 mins for our card to come back to us. When we asked our waitress she seemed really confused, and then tried to bill us again. We had to explain that we had already payed. There were only three tables being occupied at the time, it wasn't busy. I ended up going over to where their hostess desk is and looking through the black check folders after our waitress couldn't find our card. I found our debit card myself. We started with cocktails - some were some old-fashioned drinks. I had the O Julius - a drink based on that concoction that was found in malls in the 80s, and it was so tasty. My husband had the Old Fashioned, which involved blow torched orange slices. The restaurant features "vintage" foods - dishes that were popular in the 70s and 80s, maybe earlier, but they all have a modern twist. For our appetizer, we chose deviled eggs. And they were scrumptious with candied bacon and whipped egg yolks. My husband got the duck and waffles, and I ordered the duck stroganoff. His duck had a nice hard fry that left the duck skin crispy with a moist interior. His waffles were light and sweet enough without being overly sugary. My stroganoff was rich with mushrooms and cream, and the duck bits were moist as well. These dishes were great! We ordered dessert to go - the fat Elvis. Waffles topped with peanut butter mousse and bacon bits and banana ice cream. It was packaged perfectly with the banana ice cream in a separate container. The waffles and mousse were on an aluminum sheet in their to-go container to prevent them from getting wet with refrigerator condensation. They reheated well the next day after removing the foil. After visiting here in the past, I knew I had to bring my family during my graduation weekend. The decor is so different than any other place. The mac and cheese was delicious but heavy. The kale was good, but I felt like they put a little too much bacon on it- made it too salty. Crispy Asparagus Salad- The fried brussels sprouts were out of this world. Just give me a tray of those please! The rest was yummy too, but the brussels sprouts were the star! My husband got the burger and we were all shocked when it was dusted in gold on the top! Haha, what a surprise. The burger was sadly a let down- the size is more like a slider and the patty is oversized. We personally don't care for the burger that is really tall and hard to take a bite out of.
