I was working in Oakdale today and not being familiar with the area, I turned to yelp to find a place for lunch. The name of the business has "Classic Drive In", in the title. When I think Classic drive in, I think American Graffiti, or Sonic where they come out to your car. This isn't that! It is located on a corner with a small parking lot. Best way to describe the building is kind of like a Foster's Freeze where you park somewhere and walk up to the small hole-in-the-wall type building and place your order at a small window. This should not be a deterrent though. Some of the best places are hole in the walls. I was met by a friendly gentleman who took my order. I ordered the Mushroom and Swiss Ranch burger with a side of onion rings. No, the burger didn't have "ranch" on it. It took me a minute to realize that was a category of burger...like ranch style burger. It was a burger that the gentleman said, "you won't be picking it up to eat it. It is a knife and fork type of burger!" MAN, HE WASN'T KIDDING! When I picked up my order I was greeted by his wife who was even more friendly and inviting (if that is possible), than her husband. All-in-all, the burger was delicious, very nice toasted bun, loads of grilled mushrooms and red onions with a Chipotle Aioli sauce that gives it a little kick. The flavors blended well together. My only knock would be on the burger patty itself. It was a bit small. The flavor was there just not enough meat IMHO. For that I rate the burger 4/5 . The onion rings crispy on the outside and tender on the inside...the way they should be, 5/5 . Keep in mind I rate each establishment for the categories they are in. This is not a 5 star, high end restaurant. It is a classic hole in the wall, walk up to the window and order fast food category. Sometimes you just want a good burger, greasy fried food experience that tastes good. This place has that in spades...and it is delicious! I will be back. read more

Do you remember that episode of Diners, Drive-In's and Dives with Guy Fieri featuring Gillman's in Oakdale? I remember it but no one else ever does. I founded out recently that Food Network only aired the episode once and no reruns ever played. The show was so disjointed because Guy Fieri kept crying at the unearthy perfection of Gillman's burgers and milkshakes, that it was difficult to watch. It remains lost media to this day. The only downside is that it's next to the local highschool so the kids swarm the blessed burger joint from 11:30 to 12:30, so if you don't want an assault & battery charge fighting for life-giving burgers then don't come then. I however, don't have this fear and will happy throw a felony fueled fist into the face of a highschool student to get my burger. read more

This place is a gem! My husband & I ate here earlier today and we keep remarking to each other that those were really good burgers. You can taste the freshness and care - so much better than a slapped together fast food burger. And the prices?!? $4 for a small custom shake! Shakes are made with soft serve ice cream, so keep that in mind. But they are delicious. The service here is so friendly too! A really lovely couple who support the community. Tips: Burgers are made with onions and pickles chopped and slathered in condiments - so don't think you can just pull the pickles off. But they will ask you if you want all the toppings, so don't be shy to make your preference known. There isn't good signage on the place, so let your navigation tell you when you've arrived. All seating is outside, so be prepared to eat in your car in bad weather. read more

This was my first time here. I initially saw the menu and I am not gonna lie....I said "whew, it's a little spendy." BUTTTTTTTT.... I ordered all of the things...it ended up being $40 exactly for 2 of us. I got the Mushroom Swiss Burger, double bacon cheeseburger, fries (there is only one size), cheese sticks, and a large soda (to share- diet of course because it cancels the calories, right?). Anyhow the lady hands us this bag and makes sure to tell us NOT to tilt or place the bag in any other way that how she handed it to us or "else you will have a mess and it won't be my fault." We walked away puzzled but humored nonetheless. Let me tell you.... THIS BURGER WAS HUGEEEEEEE! it ended up being 3 meals for me. SOOOOOO worth the $14! I happily ate my words & this amazing burger. Gillmans is a landmark in Oakdale. A high-school hangout back in the day! Their hamburgers, fries, still delicious and exactly the same as always. Family owned. Great milkshakes! Sweet people work there. If you don't care for salt tell them to hold the salt. That's my only problem with the iconic little burger joint! Came here the other day and had a terrible experience. The lady taking my order was extremely rude just because I didn't pronounce something correctly--very unprofessional. The wait was ridiculously long, and when I finally got my food, the burger was raw in the middle. Absolutely unacceptable. The place itself felt dirty and empty, which only made things worse. This place is theBOMB! The lady who took our order greeted us with a cheerful smile(not the usual these days). Food portions were huge & prices way below what they should have been for how good it all was. Hubby had the mushroom burger & couldn't even finish it! This is my family's go to for burgers. They are the sweetest people and we have always loved our food. Their shakes are delicious. Be prepared to wait about 10-15 minutes, sometimes longer if it's lunch during the school day because they are making it to order, it's not McDonald's. We normally go to another Oakdale drive through for burgers but they don't have the same family charm as Gillman's. Nor the tasty shakes and burgers. I thought that I had written a review for this place some time ago and upon reviewing my photos I was surprised to find that I never did. Because this place deserves it. It's off of the beaten path a bit but not lost to history. The folks who served us were as proud of their establishment as anyone can be and it showed in the quality of the food. Anyone who has had a really well prepared, old fashioned hamburger or cheeseburger will easily recognize the quality here and return for more every time. I'm only sorry that I don't live closer as I'd really rather frequent these folks than any place locally. The shakes are delicious. We had a huge strawberry shake and it was thick with fruit. Finally I would recommend this place simply because it's a family run joint and as such the people who run it make you feel at home. If something's not right they'll do what they can-within reason-to fix it. I remember they said something about a family disagreement over whether the place would remain standing but it seems that the place is still open since our visit. We LOVE Gillman's! The best hamburger (Ranch Burger w/cheese & everything) you will ever have. Period. My kids are fourth generation Ranch Burger eaters/lovers. Be sure to try a custom Pepsi. I always just added vanilla, until recently, I tried blackberry--yum! The kids are also happy if I just get them a bag of fries and a rootbeer freeze.
