Hidden behind The Stir Coffee Bar, this speakeasy nails the cozy, upscale vibe with dim lighting, comfy seating, and killer cocktails. The bartenders know their craft--every drink is smooth, balanced, and beautifully made. Service is friendly, the ambiance is spot on, and the whole experience feels special. If you're into great cocktails and a little mystery, this spot is a must. Just make a reservation and find the hidden entrance.

This place is a vibe. Had a friend tell me there was a speakeasy in the area so we went on a mission to find it. Very cool spot that requires a password but don't worry the hostess will help direct you on how to find it. You enter through an old school telephone booth. Once inside, the place is very small and intimate. Don't be afraid to go off menu. Simply tell the server what you like, fruity, sweet and creamy, etc and they will put together a drink. If alcohol isn't your thing, don't worry, they offer mock-tails. While I didn't get the chance to enjoy the bites, they looked delicious. This place is perfect for date night, boys or ladies night out or simply opting for something off the beaten bath. Good luck finding this gem.

Service was impeccable! For only having 7 tables and a bar with only 1 waitress. We did not have reservations but the wait wasn't bad. Especially for a Friday night. There is a time limit, the drinks were amazing. The only reason for 4 stars was the food was not the greatest. I was starving so it didn't help. Parking can be very limited, there are some areas with valet. We lucked out and got a space as someone was leaving. 3 hour time limit there as well. You have to know the secret password before they let you in too. Once you give the password you go to the phone in the wall whisper the password the phone and open the door. The decor is beautiful, seats are not all that comfortable but we had a blast. The chilled shots were very yummy!

I've been to a lot of speakeasy's but this one was possibly the slowest and underwhelming one I've been too. Only one server in the space, so it took around an hour just to get one drink and fully check out. We wanted to try more beverages but didn't want to feel trapped in the location. Overall underwhelming. I'd suggest other speakeasy like Rough Rider or Undertow for a WAY BETTER experience.

Very cool little speakeasy in North Scottsdale. The place is not a secret, so plan to get their early or expect to wait for a seat on the weekends. Staff walked us around a corner, through the entrance, and into a cozy space with a beautiful backbar, good music, and friendly bar team. Menu was full of well-balanced cocktails - both classics and originals- that were just my style. We tried a fig manhattan, rif on a sazerac, a Japanese whiskey high ball, and one made with egg white. All were very good. Would def return.

Came here with my sister's wedding party for the combined bachelor/bachelorette party. We had to wait to about 45 minutes for our party of 7 to be seated, but that's okay we just went and walked around the area until we were texted that we were next in line. It's a great walkable area with a lot of restaurants and other drink spots. We were seated and promptly greeted by David who is probably the best server I've had in a very long time. Very friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating during our entire visit. We even spoke briefly with the manager at one point who was also great and friendly. The atmosphere here is really cool. Good music but not so loud that you can't carry a conversation. Old timey decor and kinda dim but that Jeff's itself to a really relaxed vibe. Cocktails here are very booze forward so keep this in mind when you're picking things off the menu. As a person who enjoys the taste of hard liquor my bourbon picks were rather strong but that's how I like them. The others in our party also really enjoyed their cocktails.

Wife and I stopped in for one drink on our anniversary before a comedy show. Everything was great until I said we're just one and done and gave the waitress my card! She took my card and our half full drinks. Drinks are $18 each so having half of a drink taken away sucks. I said hay wait I'm not done and she kept walking and dumped the drinks. read more

Fun little speakeasy in High Street. The process for getting in was seamless. We had enough time to grab some food down the street while we waited. Our cocktails were fabulous. My partner had the bartender's pick. I can't recall if it was a menu item but it was lemony and fabulous. The interior is intimate but lively. One of the best spots to take a date. The host and bartenders were really helpful and friendly. One fun thing was trying to find the "password" in the coffee shop up front. read more

Atmosphere was dark and sexy, as my friend said. I agree. Staff was uber friendly and drinks we're delicious. Staff is different. Service is at an all time low. Barista in the front walking in talking about she's not sitting anyone after 10:15, loud enough for patrons to hear. No one came and did last call. Server came to drop check, I asked if we could have two espresso martinis and she said no we did last call 15 min ago. It's 10:34, you close at 11. We come here often. They're not here for service or sales, they're here to go home as soon as possible. I work in the service industry myself and I'd be ashamed. read more

Finally tried this place after hearing so many good things, and I was definitely not disappointed! I love the mysterious entrance, the speakeasy style is so well done. Went off the recommendation of the bartender to try a mezcal Negroni, it was the best I've ever had! I'll definitely be back again to try more awesome drinks. read more

the ambiance and drinks were great. i recently visited on tuesday jan 16 with a few of my friends. we got there about 20 min before closing so we each just got one drink. my boyfriend ordered a jack and coke ($11), i ordered a tequila and pineapple ($11), and our buddy ordered a cocktail named city lights ($17) so our total came out to $43.98 tax included. our waitress visited our table once and we didn't see her again for a while so my bf went to the bar to order our drinks since we knew it was closing soon. since our waitress didn't do anything for us i gave her a $1.02 tip so it would be 45 even. this morning i check my credit card statement to see that $55 was charged. Our waitress or whomever, gave themselves an extra tip on my check!!!! how disrespectful and illegal?????? cute speakeasy but make sure you write your numbers close together on checks so weird, rude waitresses don't give themselves an extra tip they don't deserve!! read more

Went here after dinner at 9:30pm and put my name down for 2 people. Was told the wait would be about 1 hour. Went back multiple times and kept being told different things. It ended up being 11:30pm and we still weren't close to being seated. We left but before we did, the hostess let us see what the speakeasy looked like and it was a small little bar..nothing special..definitely not worth waiting 2+ hours for read more

This is a cute, tucked away speak easy in North Phoenix. Once you share the secret password which changes weekly, you can slip back into the lounge. They just changed their menu and the bartender was great giving recommendations and insights on the drinks. The ambiance and decor definitely gave you that old fashion feel. The drinks had a nice unique twist with fresh flavors that blend well together. Their food menu is aimed for a quick snack if needed, I would not come hungry to this spot. We did try the Baked Brie, which was as to be expected - nicely done but nothing extra special. read more

So..... I'm actually reluctant to write this review. I have to confess: I want as few people to know about this little gem as possible just to keep it to myself. Now of course I realize my little review won't make that much of a dent in Gin & Reel's popularity; based on other reviews it is clear that this intimate space is very popular and depending on when you pop in there can be quite the wait. I assure you it would be worth it. When we stopped by it was not too crowded and we were able to pick a spot at the bar, though there were still a tiny few lounge seats left. The bar was a perfect choice, however. Tucked away toward the back corner of The Stir Coffee Bar on High Street, you'll want to look for the pay phone. You might be asked for a password to gain access. Once given, a secret code is entered into the pay phone ( though I strongly suspect this is entirely for effect, lol ) and a hidden door opens to reveal a dark, tight and intimate space impressively backlit by the bar that highlights a truly impressive collection of liquors. The staff is well-dressed often in prohibition-era attire that lends a really fun feel to the already amazing Speakeasy ambiance. The bar staff was friendly and helpful with any questions about making a selection if you are unsure what to try. My new favorite is the Black Manhattan: Basil Hayden's Dark Rye, Averna Amaro, black walnut bitters and chocolate bitters poured over a nice square block of ice. OMG, such goodness. I'll definitely be having another one. Gin & Reel is a great little spot for an intimate cocktail experience with a special someone or even a ( small ) group of friends. There may be a wait to get in, especially on the weekends, but you are able to hang out in The Stir, maybe order a cocktail from the bar while you wait for a spot inside the the speakeasy. What a fine place. read more

Yum. That is the word that comes to mind. I've been to this business many times in the front during the day time. I never knew that the back at night turns into a speak easy. So glad I finally went. The drinks were well made and they had me try so many new cocktails and removed me from my traditional comfort zone. It was nice and classy. Will definitely come back again. read more

Perfect vibes for date night or a casual night out. Seating is limited so my group came on a weekday. I imagine this place is hard to get in to on the weekend. Overall, Super cool and unique speakeasy bar experience ! There is one thing I have to tell you; boy was it hot in there lol not sure if that's by design to give it that authentic speakeasy feel (let's go with that) or if they try save some money on that electric bill on the weekdays. Regardless, it wasn't a show stopper, and we were able to enjoy our time there. The staff was friendly and the drinks were top notch! Will be coming here again soon! read more

A cool concept but probably not a regular spot for me personally. This speakeasy has all the expected elements including a password, phone booth and servers dressed up like the 20s. This spot felt more like a novelty spot to check out once or twice rather than an often frequented bar. The drink menu has some pretty cool options and the drinks we got were delicious! We were seated at a four top table for the two of us but were seated with another separate party of two, which was odd but with such a small space, understandable. The menu was also wizard of Oz themed which was pretty fun! Overall a great spot to check out if you want a quick drink when out on the town. read more

Excellent atmosphere for this gin cocktail based bar. They'll mame just about any drink but their specialty is Gin drinks. Royal Gimlet is great, if gimmicky. Aviation also a big thumbs up. Selection of whiskeys is great. Old fashioned is also really good. read more

We ordered drinks and they gave free drinks to the table behind us before they gave drinks for the paying customers. Can't even give one star because the bartenders were awful. We sat for long periods of time without anyone acknowledging. The bar was empty and no one would even look at us. The man and women that were working were so wrapped in with other employees and making free drinks for the table behind us that we were completely ignored: They in quote said " You didn't order this but here is a free drink" for the table behind us. read more

I went here on a first date and it was slightly awkward. Maybe it was just the date, but then again I've been here just with a friend and we were sat at the smallest little table in the back and it was uncomfortable and I didn't have a place to put my jacket or purse. I understand it's a speakeasy and it's more for the vibes but idk it wasn't that impressive to me for the price. read more

This place was so so so fun. High Street in general is a great place to hang out and drink. When walking in the coffee shop we are afraid we wouldn't be able to find it but once we made our way over to the phone sign we were greeted by an associate who took our name for a reservation. It was about a 25 to 30 minute wait, they texted us when ready. We hung out at modern margarita next door while we waited. When you step through this doorway it's like you are transported,the room behind is so beautiful so elegant. The music is so loud the energy the vibe so ambitious you would never believe it's behind a coffee shop. At any great speakeasy with amazing bartenders I order my favorite alcohol type and let the bartender do the rest I always enjoy doing this and they always turn out amazing. Love a great surprise and they did that for sure such yummy beautiful cocktails I drank before I could get a picture. This place is definitely a must try. I absolutely cannot wait to take my friends back! read more

It was a good idea being hidden behind the coffee shop and the decor is beautiful.... However, that's the only positive comments I can make. The music was way too loud for a lounge. There were four of us and we couldn't even hear each other talk. We thought that it was awesome they served Sambuca (our favorite) but the bad part is they served a very poor quality brand. It was one of the worst Sambucas we ever had. Come on, if you are going to have a high end speak easy on High St. and charge $14 a drink, you can afford to serve Romana! Unfortunately that's not even the worst part...the worst part was they charged us $1.00 for a piece of square ice in each drink! Seriously?! Who charges for ice?! Four drinks were $75 and they charged for ice! Needless to say, we were very disappointed and we will not be back. read more

If you're looking for free parking, you're going to have a long walk. Outside of that, you'll have to pay for parking in a garage or metered street parking. Ambiance (4/5): Hint hint. Idle Hands is located inside Devil's Hideaway. A true speakeasy shouldn't have signage outside indicating its location. Unfortunately, there's a sign for Idle Hands outside of Devil's Hideaway which takes away the sense of mystery and intrigue that a true speakeasy provides. Outside of this hiccup, it's a cool speakeasy. It's intimate, with 10 or so seats at the bar and about 10 seats in booths facing the bar. There's a projector screen behind the bar that had mystical motion graphics the first time I stopped by (thinking wizards) and Halloween motion graphics the second time (with it being a day before the holiday). There were some other Halloween decorations up. The only area of improvement? The music often doesn't match the vibe. A lot of the music they were playing on my last visit was Irish music that would be fitting for a pub. Service (4/5): I had the same bartender each time. He knows how to make a good drink and is pretty efficient. When you close out, he only gives you the merchant copy. Which is a pet peeve of mine. Let me get that customer copy too. But overall, a good experience. Especially at a college bar. Food (N/A): I've only had drinks both times. Idle Hands actually doesn't have food, but Devil's Hideaway does. And you're allowed to bring food from there into the speakeasy. Drinks (4.5/5): It's pretty surprising to see a speakeasy on a college campus. I was impressed with the creativity of the menu, both in terms of the ingredients used and the fusion of flavors. I've had a different cocktail each time, and they've all been great. My favorite was one served in a box filled with smoke. Talk about a cool presentation! The hallmarks of a solid speakeasy are elevated cocktails, nice ambiance (dimly lit), an intimate space, and mystery/intrigue. While the intrigue is lacking at Idle Hands, and the music can be improved, they hit it out of the park in the other areas. One of my favorite speakeasies I've been to in Phoenix (and surrounding areas). I am, after all, the self-appointed king of speakeasies. The king gives his stamp of approval.

He said that "management decided to make a few substitutions but they're pretty good" and didn't provide any further elaboration. I ordered the appetizer lamb lollipops which had four small pieces for $25. My friend decided to try the "happy hour" cheeseburger and he said it was good but it did appear a bit overpriced for an average burger with a pretty hefty serving of french fries. I really wasn't impressed by the quality of the food, the portion size, the price, or the service. Unfortunately, I'll be taking Rough Rider off my list of regular places i frequent and restaurants I recommend to others.

They won't let two people sit at a table that can accommodate 4 and they wouldn't let our group of 8 split up in to two groups of 4 "because we might talk across tables and they discourage that" I watched them rudely turn away 10 people while leaving a 4-top empty. read more

So much fun! This speakeasy is a hidden gem on high street. Drinks are unique and delicious. They have a lot of really nice gin cocktails. Prices are reasonable ($10-20). It is a small space so seating can be limited. We went on a weeknight and it was very easy to get into. Weekends will likely be a pretty long wait - but that's the price to pay for such a cool and intimate atmosphere! We will be back soon! read more

What a fantastic establishment, only accessible by saying a password. Amazing drinks, décor, attentive and highly accommodating staff. Book ahead if you have a group as pretty small. The experience was excellent, and I highly recommend a visit. Definitely one of the top bars I've been to in the Phoenix area. read more
