Place is amazing. I ordered the special today. It was a blackened halibut with coconut jasmine rice and cantaloupe salsa and it was delicious. It came with saki glazed green beans which I devoured even though I don't like green beans. Then I got the green tea creme brûlée for dessert which was also awesome. This is not a cheap place and the portions are not huge, but that is a good thing. You get a great satisfying meal for a reasonable price, great service, they don't over feed you so you can actually get dessert. It's easily one of my favorite places in Anchorage. This was the first place that my girlfriend and I went to for her birthday. We were across the street doing a little shopping trip when we decided to go for a cocktail and appetizer. (Sullivan's was closed and this popped into our minds.) There were a good handful of people in the bar area, mostly at tables. The bartender and server that were working were both super helpful, friendly, and humorous. The bartenders special cocktail was an interesting concoction that including absinthe. Usually I am not a fan, but it was done just right that both of us were pleasantly surprised. The bartender also created a little birthday display for her which was greatly appreciated. We had the tacos for our bite to eat which were tasty and larger than I expected. The bartender also listened well and would answer our questions before we had time to ask. We were craving for a nice dinner that day. So we decided to go to Ginger. It is located right in downtown Anchorage. This is an upscale fine dining restaurant and looked very nice, a bit busy. We ordered Thai Coconut Chicken Skewers, Caldera Crusted Big Eye Ahi Tuna and Mee Krob. We absolutely loved the food. The coconut cashew rice was perfectly complimenting the coffee crusted tuna; and the beans, I never know they can be this tasty! Even the Mee Krob, which was rice & vermicelli noodles sauteed with chicken, pork and shrimp was too good! Food was expensive, but it was worth it! The portion sizes were good. Spring rolls were very premade and loosely wrapped which made the rice wrapper a little soggy. Peanut noodles were decent, but a little salty. Requested them with tofu which was served in a double portion of slices with another sauce that added more salt. A firmer tofu, incorporated into the udon noodles, would have been better. 3.5, but I rounded down anyway. Ginger is one of the nicer, more contemporary restaurants you'll find in Anchorage. My fiance and I have dined there a handful of times and the quality and presentation of the food was inconsistent every time. Take the Mac and Cheese and Scallops for example. One of us would order it each time (we have a thing for mac and cheese) we go to Ginger. The first time was fabulous, large juicy scallops and a savory blend of three-cheeses with the perfect amount of crustiness. It has never been as great ever since. Most recently two nights ago, my fiance ordered the mac and cheese and I was glad he was the one who ordered it. The entire dish was under seasoned and dry like it had been kept warm all day. The scallops were noticeably smaller. I had the duck breast with sweet potato gnocchi. I adored the duck. The gnocchi could have sat in the water a little longer since it was quite tough. The duck and gnocchi sat on top of a cream sauce that was way too heavy and salty and killed my stomach a little. To be positive though, I absolutely love the oyster shooter at Ginger. It is the one thing that keeps me back to this place (as well as their ginger champagne cocktail). Just the right amount of tangy and sweet. Go easy on that salted rim. Overall, I really enjoy the atmostphere of this restaurant. The servers are attentive and knowledgable. I just wish their food was as solid as it was when I first went there in March 2013. read more

I've been to Anchorage twice for business in the last six months. I came to Ginger in June and it was tasty. I returned last week with several colleagues and it was terrible. The Thai bowl had ZERO flavor, it was like eating a bowl of noodles in water. I'm not sure if they've changed chefs or what, but either way, we were extremely disappointed. read more

I've been traveling to Anchorage several times this year for work and stumbled upon Ginger because of long waits at nearby restaurants. We were not disappointed. The staff was so great and friendly and the food exceeded my expectations. The Soy Caesar Salad was delicious, as was the creamy asparagus soup. The pork buns were a little bland but were on par with pork buns I've had at other restaurants (point being maybe I'm just not a fan of buns because I've never loved them anywhere I've had them!). The nachos were pretty good with a unique spin on the traditional recipe (portion size was quite large). Such a great meal. We had a party of 7. Four appetizers and seven different main courses, and a side of sweet potato fries (white sweet potato fries... so good). EVERYTHING was excellent. Not one of us was remotely unhappy with our choice. The homemade ginger ale was a big hit. The Mac n cheese scallops were unanimously great. I loved my duck. The service was excellent. Granted, we came early. We had a 5:00 pm reservation, so the room was fairly open, but Jared was super attentive and helpful. I really have nothing negative to say about our experience. Having worked as a cook in restaurants, I understand the pressure of a busy dining room on both servers and cooks and that not all requests can be met, but it wasn't busy when my date and I were there--could the service be the reason? My husband and I have been to Ginger many times but our most recent visit was wholly disappointing. We were seated almost immediately in the bar section which was nice. Our service was acceptable but the food was late and incredibly sadly presented. We started with cocktails and Pommes Frittes. These lightly fried potato fries are served with wasabi mayo and this dish is usually one of our favorites. However, the fries were shoestring thin and horrendously salty. Additionally the wasabi mayo served with the fries was given in a pitifully small amount (less than half a ramican) On to dinner. I ordered the lobster braised duck breast over a bed of lentils cooked with duck meat. My husband ordered the pepper rubbed filet medium. The steak was properly cooked and pink but very very dry. While touted as a Chilean spiced rub it was bland and rather tasteless. The grilled potatoes and peppers beneath the rubbery dry steak were of the frozen variety. My duck breast was good. Duck is usually fatty even in the breast meat but it was prepared delightfully. However the bed of lentils underneath the duck breast was horribly salty, dr Giving them one more try--we went on to dessert. I ordered chocolate bread pudding and my hubby had blueberry pie egg rolls. Of course we both ordered coffee. The coffee came lukewarm and tasting burnt. I'm worried about dessert--and I should have been. The bread pudding while cleverly presented with cracker jacks and whipped cream-was stale, cold and rock hard. Eric's egg rolls were reminiscent of McDonalds fruit pies from the 80s. Hardly appropriate for $12. All in all we left annoyed, disappointed in our beloved Ginger and hopeful that the shift to frozen food and the departure from fresh made local food is temporary while they continue the work on their new restaurant. read more

If you actually read the reviews you will notice people giving this place four or three stars even though they had to send food back or the food was not cook properly. We were seated on the bar side. The environment was just OK, the service was great (almost like the waitress felt sorry for us being there). The food was a big disappointment!!! The cost was outrages for the portion size and for not being cooked properly. We ordered the salmon which was a thick cut and raw in the center, served over a very very flat bed of rice. Also, we order the New York steak which was served kinda cold with burned broccoli and 5 thin slices of sweet potato fries. The food was burned or under-cooked and served cold. My parents 24th anniversary was today and they told me that they were going to have dinner at Ginger to celebrate. I called Ginger to try and set up "something special for them." The hostess, Meghan, was very helpful and the staff came up with a creative and cute idea for my parents. The Ginger staff served them dessert with a note from my sisters and I. The quality of food and service at Ginger is inconsistent. Unfortunately, of the half dozen times I've been here the quality has been mostly poor. Last evening a colleague and I stopped by for an after work beverage and snack. The wait staff were socializing at the end of the bar. Our server looked over at us several times. Each time we waved our arms in the air and she would promptly look away again. She eventually came back to help us and apologized. The Pommes Frites were limp, soggy, and greasy. The Mu Shu Tacos were filled with mashed chicken that had an odd liver-like aftertaste. A second server helped us as we were getting ready to leave. As my coworker was signing her bill, I asked the server, "could I please get a box?" (I hoped to put the frites back in the oven to try to rescue them). I asked only twice before he responded to me in a rude, defensive manner. My colleague and I were surprised and confused. He kept repeating, "I thought you were talking to her!" I didn't understand his reaction and simply said, "But I was looking at you?" His amazingly harsh response was, "Well I wasn't looking at YOU, I was looking at her." Needless to say, when he returned from the kitchen with the frites in a box I threw them away. There was no way I was going to eat food packaged by someone with clear anger and bitterness issues. *My wish for Anchorage is that retail and restaurant venues would take customer service more seriously as they do in other major cities in the US. The five stars speaks to the service we had last night at dinner. Our server, Robert, was phenomenal. He was the right balance of attentive and not intrusive. He didn't ask us inane questions like "Are you still working on that?" Or. "How's the food tasting?" He wouldn't interrupt and waited patiently for us to end our conversations before engaging. He offered up wonderful suggestions when asked. I can't say enough about good things about his service. I wish all servers in Anchorage would take some tips from him on how to interact with guests. The service was alright, but the food was horrid. The special that day was salmon braised in hoisin sauce. If you're not familiar with it it's a condiment that's meant to be used as much as ketchup.
