The food was really bland and being a vegetarian I could taste a lot of 'meaty' stuff in my dish and was not at all impressed with that! We ordered hot in terms of spice level and all we got is hot and no other flavors at all. The menu touts itself as being veg friendly, but fish sauce is the norm in the majority of sauces - beware veg friends - The prices are a little steep for Richmond, the service could be better and the food quality is good, but there is better in the immediate area. Pros: Spring/Summer Rolls are by far the largest and best in the area. They spice things up to tear jerking levels if you let them. The atmosphere is cute and the patio give you great views of Carytown. Cons: Fish Sauce every where, which is OK if you are not a veggie like me. We were looking for a new Thai restaurant to try and Ginger Thai it was. There were 3 of us with 3 different degrees of hot. I ordered the tofu drunken noodles hot, and the waitress said, "Are you sure?" lol So, I changed my order to "I do not want my lips to burn." So, we had a special order of mild/hot...and it was perfect! The next plate we shared was a mild Pad Thai --medium---and again, perfect. And the last plate we shared was the incredible Pineapple rice-mild-. Now, I must state that I HATE CURRY--can't tolerate it. But, I must retract for this dish! For the price, the food was good as well as the portions. However, the service could have been better. There appeared to have been only one waiter on the Saturday night I dined. Be prepared for your drinks to not be filled. The place was very warm and my drink was on low for most of the night. She also decided to keep my change (which completely ruined the night for me). Why is this place not rated with straight 5 stars, I have no idea! I have had many great meals in my time (and I had many) and this Curry Pineapple Chicken fried rice was definitely one of the best dishes I have ever had. OK. Got it. The server lady spoke very broken English and I saw an ant running across my outside table. So freakin' what?! It made my experience even more authentic and memorable. The lady was very nice and the ant is ant no more. Beware of spiciness level and kick it down a notch, though. I ordered Medium level and I got to tell you ... it kept me honest. This was the worst Thai food I've ever had, and I love Thai food. I ordered the Lemongrass entre with beef. It was nearly inedible. The beef was chewy and flavorless, the mushrooms seemed like they were from a can, and the dish was sprinkled with pieces of lemongrass that were so rough they were like eating fish bones. Every bite I had to fish them out of my mouth. So gross. Also, this meal was nearly $18, and even if it had been delicious, the portion was much too small for that price. Never again. read more

Thai is best served spicy. I've had Thai hot but they have "we will make you cry hot" with a warning no returns. I love hot and even I had trouble. But the more I ate the more I wanted of their spicy dishes. Best pad Thai I've ever had. We sampled four appetizers and all were great. The place is not big with a his hers restroom only. They offers happy hour which is $1 off beer and appetizers. The mixture of Thai spices will delight your senses and its memory will stay with you hours later. Last week, my lunch at Ginger Thai with my constant companion was not a disappointment, but there were some things that made me wince...namely the check. There was no lunch menu per se, or lunch specials. There was no entree really under ten dollars. with 2 entrees, one order of fresh spring rolls, one small soup, and two drinks..we're talking almost 50 bucks. i don't want to ever pay that much for lunch, ever. That being said, what drew me to Ginger Thai was the Tom Yum soup, and it is delicious. I got the chicken as my meat choice, but the star is that spicy broth and the wonderful hot sauces served on the side. There was plenty of fresh cilantro too. The fresh spring rolls were good, not remarkable. the peanut sauce was not a familiar creamy peanut sauce, but rather thin, and not very spicy. My companion had a curry dish, and requested it "medium", and it set his mouth on fire. He can't really handle the spice like me. I ordered shrimp pad thai, which I love, and have had at so many different places. Some have been wonderful, and some not so wonderful. This was about right in the middle. The shrimp were few, the sauce was tasty but sparse, as was the egg and tofu, but plenty of crushed peanuts and bean sprouts. I ordered medium, and found it mild...but that's me. extra limes were brought on request. it was good, but could have been better, especially for 12 bucks or whatever it was. The server, I hate to say this, was extremely hard to comprehend. she was nice, and brought Mr. Mouth-on-fire about 20 coke refills, but it took us several "excuse me's" to understand that the kitchen was closing in ten minutes and we needed to get our order in. It is a nice-looking restaurant. Will I return? yes, but maybe just for the Tom Yum soup. read more

Located right in the heart of Carytown, finally gave this place a shot. I must say, for their lunch specials they were EXTREMELY over priced. I ordered Pad Thai and Massaman Curry. After being asked what protein I would like in each dish, I was charged a $1 extra on top of $11.50. For two lunch dishes this is outrageous. The Pad Thai had decent portions and the flavor was decent (not the best by far). As for the Massaman the portion was super lacking with the price. 4 stars for FOOD + PRICE Very tasty food. I've had their basil chicken, green curry, drunken noodles, and a few appetizers. AMAZING!!! They have spiceness levels and this is the only thai restaurant that I've had so far (and I've been to A LOT) that doesn't joke about the spice. I'm Indian and I took my mom here and she got the third level and actually said it was too spicy (when an Indian person says this...it's serious). The only thing that turns me away from the restaurant is that they don't give you a lot of food for the amount that you pay- personally, I think it's over priced. Elephant Thai gives you more for the price you pay. So much so that I don't really feel like going back even though the food is great. 4 stars for ATMOSPHERE Small restaurants with lots of places to sit. Outdoor seating available. Nothing amazing. They have the bar seating that faces the windows to the restaurant which is kind of cool. If you have a large party they'll have to put a few tables together which I feel like is half the restaurant since it's so small but they'll accommodate. read more

Not the greatest Thai food I've ever eaten, but I'd venture to say it's probably the best in Richmond. The restaurant is not particularly pleasant or charming, but it's also not expensive and perfect for a casual bite. I highly recommend the fried rices, particularly the pineapple fried rice. These people know how to serve up some Thai. I'm a huge fan of the Red Curry and the Yellow Curry, extra spicy, with a Thai Iced Tea and copious amounts of water. Start off with the Fried Spring Rolls and you'll agree that the preparation was remarkably executed. You should, of course, vary the level of spice to your tastes, some of us prefer feeling sorry the next day. HOWEVER, use caution; I ate here and followed it up with an early morning trip up I-95 through holiday traffic. Bold or stupid move, we'll let you decide. Also, being located on Cary Street, there are various flavors for foodies to enjoy, but a good job has been done to not overwhelm the traffic with too much of any one style of cuisine. This is probably one of the greatest strips for food that I have ever been to, but Ginger Thai is hands down the best Thai food in Richmond, regardless of which side of town you're on. read more

Ginger Thai Taste is by far my favorite restaurant in Richmond. The Thai Cashew Chicken is a vision of perfection and the lunch portion is just the right size (dinner portion has more meat and rice, but the same amount of vegetables, which is a shame because the tender vegetables are the best part). I have dreams of eating this dish. The Pad Thai and Curry dishes are also very good and with a variety of spicy-ness options available, there's something suitable for ever palette. The atmosphere is nice--padded cushions to sit on and tasteful Asian inspired decor without seeming too gimmicky. On warmer days, the patio offers a cool alternative. The service has always been exceptional. My only complaint about Ginger Thai Taste is the absence of a full bar, although they do have a small selection of Asian beers and sake. It's unfortunate that the other Thai restaurants on Cary St. seem to draw bigger crowds than Ginger. I'll certainly be returning again soon! read more

VILE. I honestly do not understand how this place has such a high rating. If I could give it negative stars, I would. We walked into the place and some guy seated at a table, indistinguishable from any other client, looking at his iPhone, lifted his head and said, "How many?" We replied "two" and, still seated, he said "sit anywhere." And then resumed his iPhoning. [Repeat for every other party that walked in after us.] Not a good sign that service is a priority at this place, but we stuck with it. To start our wildly overpriced and ultimately disappointing meal, we ordered chicken satay and fresh rolls. The chicken satay was inedible. Long thin strips of chicken on skewers, not grilled, but deep fried! [Note to Ginger Thai 'chef' - google "Thai Chicken Satay recipe" and note that the chicken is meant to be grilled.] Served horribly oily, tasteless with a tough exterior. Cheap and leathery, like carnival food, only worse. Actually, calling the satay "carnival food" insults carnival food. The fresh rolls were bland beyond description. Served with a bit of celery inside, it was an odd addition, and was otherwise a wrapper of noodles with minimal vegetables. Not unlike the rolls made at their now out-of-business neighbor, Sprial Noodles. Only the Spiral Noodles rolls didn't contain celery and were half-the price. And were better tasting. We then moved on to our main course. Two orders of drunken noodles, our go-to dish at Thai restaurants. We specifically requested minimal oil and minimal oyster sauce and both orders were with tofu. One of us is vegan. What we got was a disgusting oily mess. The tofu cubes were super-saturated with oil, like little sponges of the very ingredient we asked them to leave out. Apart from the tofu squares, I bit into a long, thin strip of something, which tasted to me like chicken. It looked like chicken. It didn't look nor taste like tofu. I called over the waitress, who expressed shock at how such a thing might have made it to my plate. She obviously had never seen anything like it before. She takes the plate, disappears into the kitchen for 2 minutes, then reemerges, telling me that the strip of chicken, was tofu all along! She proceeds to cut the piece for me, leaving what looks now like two pieces of chicken on my plate. Either way, chicken or some bizarro tofu-strip anomaly looks and tastes and smells like chicken - the dish was so oil-soaked, it was inedible. At $13 per dish, that was $26 dollars plus tax for garbage. To get to the dirty bathroom, you have to make your way past the kitchen. Had I done this when we came in, I would have walked right out. We've been going to another Thai place on Cary street for years and made a huge mistake by giving this place a shot. Absolutely the worst. And we spent nearly $60 for this disgusting travesty. Would have been 75% that price or less at Moms Siam, or elsewhere. Never again! read more

Although the decor isn't much it isn't in poor taste either. Food comes quickly and the servers appear to be gracious. The chicken dumplings probably need a redo. They use dark meat chicken if not minced and it takes on a very different taste. However! The Blue Crab & Shrimp Rice dish was delectable. My companion ordered the salmon & apple dish with peanuts. It was pretty tasty and a very interesting meld of flavors but it did not compare with my Blue Crab & Shrimp Fried Rice. It isn't often that I get to dine with the restaurant staff catering to me and my guest with no other patrons to cater to but when you given the chance the special attention is more than welcomed. Typically an empty restaurant is a sure fire sign of a need to continue my search but my companion was pretty convincing in playing Ginger Thai up weeks before my arrival. I'm a huge fan of Thai food and have been trying out as many Thai places as I can in Richmond. I finally made it to Ginger Thai for lunch, and was pretty happy with my experience. Our food came super fast, and our server was so sweet. I had the pineapple chicken with mixed vegetables, and although there was not enough pineapple for me, the sauce was really delicious. When I go to a Thai place for the first time, I usually go for mild spice, just in case. I've found that "mild" means different things to different people! For Ginger Thai Taste, "mild" means "none." There was absolutely no heat to my dish. To me, that's better than not being able to finish my dish because it's too hot, but now I know for next time to definitely go for the medium. This review is a one-time, first-impression deal. I got takeout here at the recommendation of my friend. The drunken noodles were really good and they let you pick your spiciness level but why so expensive?? I expected more food for what I paid and that's why I knocked off one star. There were also no utensils in the bag. I think I'd rather get Elephant Thai, the portions are similar and it's cheaper over there. I believe the menu is more extensive as well. Or drive all the way to Ruang Tong in Southside, which is still my favorite Thai in the area. However, since everyone keeps saying they have the best Pad Thai I'll come back and try it and update my review. The place is pretty cute and the patio was full on a summer night. While I now consider Ginger Thai to be the best Thai food I've had yet in Richmond, the high price of their meals knocks this down to 4 stars. As is mentioned before, their spiciness table is no joke! "Make me cry" hot is something I'm not sure I want to bring upon myself, as "Thai hot" actually does make me shed tears. I enjoy eating at Ginger Thai when my usual favorite is closed or inaccessible for whatever reason. I usually sit in at the bar that faces out to the street so I can watch people walk by. They do a good job at all the standard dishes, and the presentation is above average. I don't ask for "extra broccoli" anymore because they charge me for it but I am never convinced it's there. And they serve the Pad See Ew with American broccoli instead of Chinese broccoli. Overall, though, it's excellent food. VCU medicine program was hosting their pre-interview dinner at this restaurant so they covered the cost. I tried their thai iced tea, crab Rangoon, spring roll appetizers, and pad Thai combo with chicken beef and shrimp. Crab Rangoon was really good with their peanut sauce but the spring roll was plain, just empty carbs. Our resident should've ordered the shrimp spring roll instead. The pad Thai, on the other hand, was good with all that meat. They give so much yummy noodles, I had to take about half of it home. One of the female applicant next to me ate like one fourth of her pad Thai and threw the rest away. I wanted to take hers home too but feared the watchful eyes of my residents. Also, if you are here on interview, don't get alcohol because the program won't cover it. The same girl next to me had to pay over $10 for a glass of wine. You should get their Thai iced tea instead :) Oh, and watch out for their spiciness. I wouldn't recommend going too high, I chose the second spicy from the bottom and I could feel it. Came here on a whim because my fellow guest and I were visiting from out of town to see family. We enjoyed sitting by the sidewalk on the patio on a cool spring evening. I'm not a snob when it comes to Asian cuisine, but the food from Ginger Thai Taste seemed to be one of the most authentic an experiences that I've had anywhere. For one thing, there are five choices for how "hot" you want your meal to be, with number five being the hottest. I have a preference for things to be pretty hot. However, my awesome waitress followed up with my request for the number three by saying, "Are you sure about that, sir? The number three is hot enough to make your nose run and eyes water." Everyone within earshot let out a bellow of laughter, including yours truly. I changed my taste selection to number two, which was still hot, but not that unbearable. Overall, our service was friendly. Cool atmosphere. Good food. All of you lovers of Thai food, definitely come here! read more
