Amazing food. The pho is so delicious. The soju cocktail is also something you have to try. There is always a wait here, but it's worth it.

We got seated right away, which was nice. We ordered Crispy Imperial Rolls with crab and shrimp and the Albacore Tuna Rolls. We got the Imperial Rolls quickly. They were a little greasy, but good. They were out of the Steak Salad, that my fiance wanted, and the waitress recommended the Shaking Beef. It was really tasty but some warning about the "OMG, my mouth is on fire" peppers would have been nice. I ordered the Wok Tossed Noodles with Shrimp. The noodles were good, but the shirmp was pretty tastless. We asked about our tuna rolls, but no one came back, with an answer. My fiance had to go up to the counter to ask again. They were not impressive at all. Plus they had more peppers hiding in there. I like the idea of wine like bottles chilling with water, it was a cute idea. Their ginger limeade was pretty good, but the pineapple tropical green tea tasted like water. Overall, it was not worth the money. Oh, and our table wobbled. read more

Worst service ever for mediocre food. Went there on a Saturday when it wasn't busy - literally, 10 tables available. Stood around and was ignored by many servers/bus boys until the "host" walks by and starts to say something and then hears the phone ring. She says "one moment" which I assume meant that she would answer the phone and immediately put them on hold. Instead, answers the phone and continues to talk to whoever was on the other end. After she gets off the phone, she hands me a menu and says "you can sit wherever you like." I sat down, looked at the menu, and waited. Waited. waited. It was not busy, the place was empty, many servers were walking around by me, but I was still waiting. I tried to make eye contact with everyone, but when I saw the people that arrived after me get their order taken I couldn't sit there any longer. I just got up and left. I've been there before to know that I am not missing out on much. You're in the service industry, you're supposed to provide service. So many better options in this area of Los Angeles that you should look into. I can only imagine how poor the service is when it is crowded. read more

Soooo Good. I have been their twice... in the last week! I live for good pho, and this pho is great! I also tried the lavender tamarind-aid and it was really unusual and satisfying. And their kumquat cheesecake and chocolate-banana bread pudding is write-home-about good! read more

I've been to Gingergrass a number of times, and I've always liked it, but last night I went for the first time in a long time, and I was inspired to write a review. I got a tasty appetizer called Bo Bia, a spring roll with mushroom and coconut and some other things, that was very tasty. They serve it with a kind of sweet, vinegary sauce. I ordered the Sweet and Sour Seafood Canh Chua. I picked the fish out (I just don't care for fish in soup), but other than that I liked it. Yummy sweet and spicy chunks of pineapple and rice noodle. It was a nice twist on pho (which I love and eat often). The real standout though, was my boyfriend's dinner: the clay pot curry vegetables with baked tofu. I love the presentation in an actual clay pot. And it is so so so delicious. It's kind of creamy, generous with the ginger, and just fragrant and wonderful. I thought I detected cinnamon or some other pumpkin pie spice, but with enough citrus to keep it from tasting like chai. It was a bit rich, but it would be the perfect thing for a chilly night. read more

We've been here about a dozen times and always left happy. We like the pho and curry, but usually go with something on the specials list because it always sounds so yum (and delivers!). Last time they had some crab specials going and we tried the crab soup and crab noodles. The soup was so good we ordered a second bowl, and the noodles were good but not great. i give it a 3 and half stars. it's not like your regular vietnamese place. i think any vietnamese that caters to the yuppy crowd will never be as good as a hole in the wall with a B rating. with that said, the place was very clean, and the items i've ordered pretty good. read more

Okay, I am a venice girl and stay west a lot of times. However, I will drive 30 to 60 min ( if there is traffic) to eat at Gingergrass. This place is awesome!!!!! It's clean, parking is decent and free, and there food and drinks are sooo good. My favorite dish is the wok noodles with chicken and vegetables. It's so clean, not greasy, and just delightful! I also love there spring rolls, Steak salad, and several of there entrees. Since I lived in Spain, it's hard to find good Sangria. I especially like the white wine sangria but the red one is also great. There is longer wait times on weekend nites but it's worth it! read more

This place is awesome! I came here because of the good reviews, hoping I woudn't be disappointed - I wasn't. I started off with a Red Lotus mimosa - champange w/ lychee & blood orange juice, and some rolls (I can't remember what they were called), both of which were delicious. I had the beef noodle bowl for lunch. I usually don't eat that much but I ate the entire bowl. For dessert I had the plum tart - it was finished in about 3.5 seconds. Love this place. Great or lunch or dinner. The food is always fresh, well spiced, and decent portions. The servers are efficient, friendly, and knowledgeable. The three lunch special are always a great deal. The chalk board over the kitchen area is always full of off-menu items that truly are special. $30 for lunch? Me thinks not. You do not have to spend this much money to get quality, fresh Vietnamese food (OR Pan Asian food, whatever we are calling it) in Los Angeles. Gingergrass is good, wait. No. It's okay. I have had much better for much less. They do have a nice wine list though. I will give them that. Service totally sucked. The lobster chips and dip that await you at your table are a nice touch to help you forget about the minimum 15min. wait. The staff has always been friendly although they do sometimes "forget" any requests you may have. The curry clay pot is a good bet -- but could do with a bit more sauce. The wok tossed noodles are fresh and flavorful. The servings are large and leftovers taste even better the next day. read more

Eating at Gingergrass was the worst dining experience of my life. After waiting at least thirty minutes our table was given away to newly arrived guests, so we had to wait another thirty before we were seated. This was double the amount of time that we were told to expect. The staff did not make any attempts to rectify their mistake. Once we were finally seated at a table and our drinks were served, our waitress asked us to move so that she could fit more people into the restaurant. I was surprised they suddenly cared so much about seating their patrons since we waited over an hour before we got a table. Next, the air conditioner started to leak water on me and the person seated to my left. We moved the tables as much as we could and then tried to squeeze over as much as possible to avoid the falling drops. This was the best solution provided by our unhelpful waitress. The food arrived, it was OK. I ordered vegetarian soup with, probably, a side of air conditioner water. YUMMY! When the check came the waitstaff added 20% gratuity to the bill which is not stated anywhere on the menu. When I complained about this, the manager came over and made excuses instead of offering to correct the problem. We had horrible service and it was a slap in the face to have them tack on whatever amount they felt like, without prior notice on the menu and then insult my intelligence by making excuses for their poor judgment. The manager did remove the gratuity from the bill but the whole experience was so horrible it bordered on comical. If you are looking for mediocre food served to you by a cantankerous and unapologetic waitstaff this place is for you! read more

Ive always enjoyed my meals here. To be honest, the food is good, but not the best vietnamese i've had. maybe I'm just biased after spending a month in Vietnam. The place is always busy, arousing my trendy phobia. The wait staff is efficient, but lack attitude. The best asset? the large beers, $9 but so refreshing. No hanoi bia or sigon bia unfortunetly just singtao and tiger beer I think. The bill is always a bit surprisingly steep, but again maybe just Vietnam flashbacks and too many beers. read more

this review is two years overdue (i just didn't realize this site existed). the 1st time i went to this restaurant with my husband and young daughter i had a great experience and liked the food. our waiter was outstanding and attentive (blond with a black eye?). the 2nd time...not so much. I was recovering from stomach flu and asked our waitress if i could substitute the onions in the shaking beef with a different vegetable because i didn't think i could stomach them. i suggested broccoli? the waitress abruptly said "we don't have broccoli, why don't you just have it without onions." i said i'd like some sort of vegetable with the dish and could she suggest something. The waitress said "just have it without the onions." i was frustrated not only by her tone but her in ability to offer an alternative. finally i said "i'll take it with the onions but could it be made with 1/2 the amount." The waitress didn't even try to hide her annoyance with me no matter how politely i was trying to order. for the rest of the meal we were treated as though were were the bane of this woman's existence. when the bill came my husband looked at it and became very quiet. he held it up to me and said "what does that mean?" the copy of the bill with the itemized food order on it had the following printed beside my dish " half onions - pain in the ass." not hand written, but obviously typed on the order when it was sent to the kitchen. my blood was boiling. before i could call the manager to our table my husband stopped our waitress as she walked past our table and confronted her. She tried to tell us some cockamayme story that the chef had written it on the order because it was his nickname for her. news flash, i've worked in enough restaurants to know that the chef/cooks don't type on orders. only the front of the room types on orders. I told every person i could about my experience and didn't go back to the restaurant for a year. when i did finally give it a second chance, guess who served me? same girl. she didn't seem to recognize us but she was still as abrupt and impatient as can be. call me crazy but i don't appreciate that. When the bill came this visit i decided to leave a message of my own on it. i wrote in big letters "a pain in the ass? not so much." not been back since. let me go on record and say the food is tasty but I'm not interested in paying money to be treated like oliver twist. read more

I love this spot. We eat here all the time. The service is great, the food is yummy....but we come for the DELICIOUS Bo Bia and the last two times we've come to Gingergrass they've been OUT! How do you run out of bo bia? Don't you have the ingredients? Don't you have a chef in the kitchen? Can't you whip some more up when they're gone? What's the big deal about making spring rolls to order? And both times they ran out the tables on either side of us were requesting it as well. Obviously its a popular dish. So make more! Let me start by saying I am a huge FAN- I'm not even going to hide it. I found out about this place from a co-worker and I am forever indebted to him. The food is just awesome- starters, soups, coffee, you name it- all awesome. I stick to my usual Chicken Pho and it never disappoints- served with sides of thai basil and sprouts to mix in- omg, I want to go get some now. I also love the Crispy Imperial rolls- a lettuce wrap type of starter- they come with this mint on the side which you would think would overpower the whole wrap, but it doesn't- it adds just the right amount of flavor. Cap the meal off with a Vietnamese coffee- made with condensed milk- sooooo good. The only thing that isn't that great is the parking, the wait, and it can sometimes be a little loud. But, you can usually find a space across the street in the bank parking lot, there is the Silverlake Wine Store right across another street- go grab a glass will you wait your 10 minutes to be seated- and I'm loud too- so the noise doesn't bother me. :) read more

As early customers of Gingergrass we were always thrilled with the experience, always going back for a repeat experience. There was a shrimp dish in the entree listings that created an anticipation hours before the actual meal transpired. Having lost contact with Gingergrass because of various life developments, we returned recently to find the menu changed, the shrimp dish vanished, and the current fare remarkably bland.The Noodles with Shrimp was initially served without the brown rice originally called for, and the shrimp had freezer burn taste, and the few shrimp served were tough and generally unpalatable.The Clay Pot Vegetables with Shrimp was marked by absence of distinction. The former dish had to be constantly doctored with hot sauce in order to bring some flavour to bear, while the latter dish possessed the same absence of personality. As for the Dessert, the ginger creme brule left a distinct card board taste in the mouth. There was no sensation of ginger, with no consistency in texture! For the money spent one could have just as easily retired to a less expensive lunch setting for the same experience. WHERE IS THE POWER OF VIET NAM? It seems as if management has decided to follow the trend of the world, putting out less in order to reap more. There are some restaurants locally operated which have not changed an iota over the years, neither in pricing, nor in the quality of the cuisine. I'm thinking in particular of the Twin Dragon on Pico Boulevard. For the price, larger portions, signature distinction to each of the dishes must occur in order for us to remain as loyal customers. I've always liked the food at Gingergrass, although the service can be a little so-so. I had no idea about their little nextdoor cafe, Gingersnap! It's cute and quiet, with beautiful hand-lettered signs. The night we went, our waitress Cat was attentive, helpful and hilarious--she really made our meal. She seemed to genuinely be having a good time (as opposed to just phoning it in) and gave us great suggestions from the menu and wine list. We'd go back just to see her again! And for the food, of course: The papaya salad, clay pot curry and noodle bowls are must-tries. read more

Premium Vietnamese cuisine in a laid back setting. I have been here a few times and am never disappointed. I drive all the way out from the coast just to eat here, and love it! Great cuts of beef in the pho, delicious Bahn Mi, and awesome Vietnamese iced coffee. And they gave me a discount on my birthday. This place is great in my book! read more

Came to this restaurant 8 months ago and it was terrific. Came back this week only to find disappointingly that it has gone downhill. First of all, the Vietnamese coffee is awful. Completely different kind of drink than the traditional Vietnamese coffee which is usually creamy, sweet and delicious. What they gave me this time was basically a small French press of black coffee and a glass of ice! Three of us were very upset with our meals. The food was barely warm, the cod was undercooked, the beef was only warm and our noodles were stuck together in a blob! They showed little concern and did not even offer something else or maybe a dessert. As a matter of fact, she was happy to get us out of there. I don't know what happened to this once very nice place but I will never return. There are so many great places to eat in the area that I wouldn't bother to waste my money . read more
