Since then, the quality has dropped across the board. The noodles were hard and had a plastic-like texture, the meat was no longer juicy or flavorful, and even the spring rolls weren't as good as they used to be. It feels like every part of the meal has taken a step back. I was really disappointed with my experience today. This used to be one of my favorite spots, but unfortunately it just isn't the same anymore. Let me tell you this is after I heated the broth and blanch the noodles

I would have loved to try more dishes and definitely dessert! Our server was wonderful--friendly, attentive, and incredibly professional. He checked on us at just the right moments without ever feeling intrusive. The service was as impressive as the food. The restaurant has such a warm, relaxing atmosphere. I especially loved the beautiful ceramic water cups with bird designs--they were so unique and charming. Even the water tasted wonderful! I'm thrilled that Au Lac is still thriving after all these years. If anything, the food tasted even better than I remembered. I certainly won't wait another 12 years before coming back. In fact, I was so impressed that I convinced my husband to come with me next Saturday for dinner! I've tried many vegan restaurants over the years, and Au Lac remains my absolute favorite. I forgot to take a pic of the menu but today I ordered half of a portion of grilled pork bahn mi, brisket pho and Vietnamese iced coffee and it was just perfect! All the greatest hits, no leftovers, at a great price. There are plenty of room for lunch so you won't be waiting too long. You should be able to be in and out in an hour. Servers are friendly as always and if i am not mistaken, they installed a large TV monitor (or maybe i never noticed it until now LOL.)

The bowl had a good mix of vegetables and a few types of protein ( chicken, pork, fried egg roll, and shrimp ) it was awesome! The spring rolls were terrific as well. The peanut sauce had some nut crumbles for texture which had subtle crunch with every spring role bite. The taste was overwhelmingly salty--more like salted pork than the sweet, rich flavor I was expecting from caramelized pork. To top it off, I spent over $40 something dollars for my meal and for Postmates delivery to the South Bay, which makes this disappointment even harder to swallow. I'm not sure I'd order from Be U again unless someone else is footing the bill. I really wanted to enjoy this meal, but sadly, it fell short of my expectations. If you're craving Vietnamese food, you might want to explore other options.

I have been a long time customer and lover of Gingergrass and unfortunately had a rude and disheartening experience with some of the staff there. We came in before they closed and ordered to go. We asked if we could sit with our Togo order and quickly eat. We saw that there were still 4 tables eating and enjoying and we simply asked if we could just have our food in a bowl so we can avoid the waste: Having worked in the food industry for over 10 years I understand and know that they were no longer taking dine in customers and also aware that the people inside were going to be lingering and enjoying their time. The cashier was kind and understanding and said she would ask and that it should be fine. However, a server named Keisha came to us very rudely and said that we can't sit and eat our food there and that they closed promptly at 9pm. When we politely asked and took note of the other tables we asked if they were going to kick them out at 9pm and she yes so we can't eat there. Moments later a table just received their food. Honestly, we just wanted to avoid all the plastic waste when we just wanted to quickly eat our pho. And had Keisha approached us kindly, or simply with respect I wouldn't feel the need to write this review. Our interaction with her left a bad taste in our mouth and we cancelled our food order. When the manager asked us what happened we simply restated what the issue was. Which to reiterate wasn't that they were closing, but simply was the poor customer service and disrespectful scolding we received. When we spoke to the manager he disregarded the poor treatment we received and just attempted to gaslight us. Maybe Keisha was having a bad day, but still that is no right to treat other humans that way. Hope she feels better. read more

To borrow from an old 1970's review of a rock band: "How do you spell pretentious? - Answer: GINGERGRASS". With so many good restaurants in the area, why this has hung on for as long as it has is one of the great mysteries of the world. A true dump. The food is mediocre at best, and I wonder why the Thai Government hasn't come in to arrest them for false advertising or just simply insulting them. But okay, it's edible. So why the harsh dry tone to this review? It's the service. I've gone now three times, and each time the waiter (or waitress) treated me like something they found on the bottom of their shoes. See, the point is, I went in by myself, and this is a small place, and they do not like anyone coming in alone. Less Tips, less money in the cash register. So each time they try and put you on a bench, or a corner by the bathroom. Sure, I understand I can't sit at a table for four, or more. But these folks, just don't like any solo eaters. Which is insane, since this is a "neighborhood" restaurant, and should depend on loyal customers who live in the area and will come back again and again. The last time I actually came in with three other people, and sad to say, that even though this time we were seated quicker, and I didn't get the feeling that they were the SS and wondering if I looked too Jewish, they still were horrid in service and attitude. There is some kind of feeling that they are the hot chick in town, the captain of the varsity high school cheerleader squad, and therefore can treat people with distain. It's as if we should be lucky to be in this local insignificant eatery. I think LA Weekly or something gave them a nice review and from then on they think their satay doesn't stink. I was told once--by a Vietnamese friend--that the smaller, dirtier, and cheaper the Vietnamese restaurant, the better the food would be. While I have found this to hold true generally and often, Gingergrass is a definite exception. I don't know that I'd travel from afar just to eat here, but it's an excellent start to an evening in Silver Lake, if you're planning to hit a bar, see a performance. Drink, dance, Pinkberry, whatever. Yes, Pinkberry. Verb. It's great spot for vegetarians (and carnivores with veggie friends), as there are lots of tasty meat-free options. And for those in either camp who like a drink with dinner, there is a decent selection of wine and beers. While Gingergrass is ostensibly a "fusion" restaurant, they also have more standard fare--pho, rice noodle bowls, summer rolls. I actually prefer these dishes--a sort of lighter, fresher take on traditional Vietnamese restaurant food. There is almost always a wait, so plan on standing around and chatting outside for at least 15 - 20 minutes. Parking is a bit of a squish as well. There is a small lot in back, parking on the street, or park at your own risk at the BofA across the street. For those in the area, Gingergrass also does takeout, which you can call ahead and order--though they tend to wrap everything up in gads of plastic. Soooo NOT very green of them! The interior is very "Silver Lake"--think Dwell magazine meets rice stick noodle. There is also a small outside patio, but which faces busy Glendale boulevard. Overall, it's a place I find myself going back to. Maybe you will, too. read more

My husband took me here last night. We had a bit of a wait which is amazing for a Tuesday night. Once we got seated we had the fried okra which was yummy, make sure to mix it with the vinaigrette on the bottom and we also had the pork noodle dumplings, yummy with the sauce. I ordered the beef pho, if you like beef and the smell and taste of just plain beef this is good for you... but if you're like me and like seasoned and marinated beef, then I suggest you try something else. What was great is that the wonderful owner came to check on me and see how I liked it, and I was honest, he brought me the chicken pho, it was better, still a little low on flavor, but more like chicken noodle soup. Our friend had the seafood pho and the broth was delicious, so I may try that next time. My husband had the shaking beef, which I tried and it was yummy!!! The service was fab. I love how they serve their water in a tall bottle with a cork which looks more like a bottle of vodka, that was cool. The Vietnamese beer was out of this world, so flavorful!!!! Thanks to the wonderful owner and waiter who took such great care of us. I will go back and try more things just for that... happy eating :) read more

Decent food, somewhat good service. I have been to this place twice so far. First was with my 2 other friends and 2nd time just by myself just wanted to see their customer service. Most of the waitresses there are nice except for one, who is tall skinny and Hispanic looking, she doesn't seems to pay attention much to customer's needs. One time I was requesting for a cup of ice for my water after she brought out my food, the girl kept walking away as I was asking. I hope she was seriously didn't hear me and not trying to ignore my request. Other than that I did not experience any other problems with other staffs who were there. The food was average, crispy calamari was pretty delicious but the portion was way to small for what it costs, it's almost embarrassing to look at. The pork chop combo that comes with rice and salad as the sides were pretty good the first time I came. However the rice was very soggy in the 2nd time as if they poured too much water in it. The dessert vanilla bean ice cream was ok, I wouldn't order it again. Overall, nice restaurant, decent food, good service but needs improvement. read more

I ate here for the first time last weekend with out of town guests from New York. We all agreed that the flavor of the place was very reminiscent of a small fabulous hang in the East Village New York. But the food and its flavors were the star of our show.The food was to die for!!! I am still dreaming about the dumplings. I find getting good vegetarian food in the Vietnamese world is a challenge and this place had MANY offerings. I wanted to mention that the staff was VERY accommodating for our group of 7 which would normally cause a wait time but they kindly put a table together in their "Ginger Snap" room and it made our night out even more special. The waiters were lovely and had that just right amount of NY cool that made me want to jump on a plane back to my old stomping ground. We had spring rolls to start ( 4.95) , then basil lime elixir (soooo good, 3.50 ) and had the lunch plates chicken and pork chops . (8.95 each during lunch) . Our server was very prompt to serve us , we first had the spring rolls with shrimp and peanut sauce , pretty good not fishy which is a huge plus with me also had shrimp chips which were surprisingly more fishy than the rolls ? I had remembered them being flavorless but the " fishy" taste was not over whelming . Then our entrees came , the wok tossed chicken which was ok , the chicken was a little bit dry but the seasoning was delicious . I live around the corner from this place, so it's where I usually go for my weekly Tuesday lunch date with my friends. I always get the same thing and will never ever tire of it- their pork chops. I could eat that thing everyday... it's marinated, every bite is juicy, the broken rice is all perfect and rarely sticky, that I never feel bad for finishing my whole dish. The pork chops are lean, but you get 2 or 3 pieces, and you get more meat than rice. It's my weekly reward to myself when I go on long walks. If that pork chop came in gum form, I would chew it all the time... it's like Orbit gum in a sense that it never runs out of flavor, I love it! My only criticism is that I wish their Vietnamese coffee tasted like most Vietnamese coffees I've tasted. It's not strong enough for my liking. read more

Vietnamese cuisines and they say 'it's all fresh'. Would recommend this place without a doubt - get your directions and reach here at least once if you're in Los Angeles. Gingergrass is actually a pretty cool restaurant with some really high quality Vietnamese food on a platter. Popped in here with a couple of buddies this noon and bingo - hit the chords for a foodie like me. These guys had this amazing dish 'Shrimp Chips'. Ah, it was so damn appetizing (though they'd raked in some peanut sauce for a better tang). But trust me, it was just an awesome thingy to try and try. Wok-tossed noodles were good too (just a bit oilier than I'd expected)! And here it goes - it all comes after a long wait. We love Vietnamese food! Gingergrass was one of the first stylized Vietnamese restaurants on our side of town and is now an old standard. Food: Small'ish menu but plenty of options. A lot of items can be made with tofu which we really appreciate. Their Gingerale is yummmmmy as is their clay pot curried veggies. Another staple is the wok tossed noodles w/ veggies. Ambiance: Clean and sweet. Always feels friendly and inviting. Even though the tables are relatively close, you still are far away not to have to overhear about someone's boyfriend or where your dining neighbor went last weekend. I recently ordered takeout from here and was told it would be ready in 25 minutes. I arrived 25 minutes later, only to end up waiting an additional 20 minutes for my order. In total, it was a 45-minute wait for just two bowls of pho to go. When I finally got home, I was disappointed to find that the beef was frozen, not just raw as is typical with pho. It was still defrosting when I opened the container, which affected the quality and enjoyment of the meal. I've had pho many times before and understand the beef is meant to be raw to cook in the broth, but frozen meat simply doesn't work for this. moved not too long ago from seattle and looked for different good foody places. I loved this restaurant. Food was awesome. A bit more than I expected a vietnamese restaurant to be. But everything my friends and I ordered were delish. But something wrong with the serving people. I don't know if they were cranky or whatever but my server...Juliana...ugh (I had to mention it) served a hot bowl of noodle soup to my friend right over my head. Americanized Vietnamese food that is approchable for any and everyone. Sure the foods not truely authentic but then again that's not really the point. If you want tasty, inexpensive and authentic Viet food then make your way to MPK(Monterey Park) or take a little trip to go ole Westminster and get some custom slacks made too.... Portions are on the smaller side and the prices tend to run high for traditional Viet food but hey that is the concept....definitely a place to take people not ready to "explore" as one review'er has stated but worth a try! read more

I've been here several times and really love the food. You do pay for it, so if you're on a budget it's a nice treat. The service can vary but for the most part it's average-good. The dining room is VERY loud as I have never seen it not crowded and conversations reverberate off the walls of the small enclosure. But the food is great. I get the spring roll appetizer every time and the Curry Clay Pot is amazing and worth three meals. I also usually enjoy the Gingergrass Gingerale, which I would love to know how to make myself. read more

Let's be honest with ourselves. I wanted to give this a 4 but the slow service and food quality slightly held me back. Very busy on a Friday night. But we were seated quickly and our waitress did her best managing the 10 tables she had. Get the Tuna rolls to start, not the dumplings. Get the Pork Belly, fucking good. Pairs nicely with any beer or red wine. Givin my rating I'm still looking forward to trying this place again. I just think some of the things on their menu is hit or miss. read more

FOOD POISONING! Yeah, I got food poisoning from eating at Gingergrass last night. I've been going to this place for years and I've never had a problem but clearly the quality has dropped significantly. Within about 30 minutes of eating I became very sick and it lasted all night. I don't think I need to go into specifics about food poisoning but it was clearly caused by my meal at Gingergrass. I'd recommend avoiding this place because who knows what the food is tainted with. read more

Popular friend Egg Rolls are small and lack real Vietnamese flavors. They do offer a variety of fillings. Rice Dishes and Vermicelli are on par with many of the mentioned dishes. Ingredients are fresh and still average. There is simply no great value here with pricing that borders on gourmet. $18 for a bowl of Pho and $10 order of egg rolls is simply difficult to spend for what you are getting here without considering elsewhere. Their Bahn Mi sandwiches are also nearly $20. Not my first go-to, but their service is friendly, and the take-away or delivery option in a pinch is convenient.

Mind you none of the parking meters were working and we just prayed we did not get a ticket. We took the sandwiches to go and got back to the car before getting a ticket. My husband and son ordered the beef steak banh mi. My pork banh mi was definitely the winner for everyone except my husband who doesn't eat pork. I know my son wished he would have ordered pork, but I let him have some of mine. All the sandwiches are $15.00 each. They only sell limited drinks so if you eat there you might want to bring your own. They did not have any Diet Pepsi or Diet Coke, so my husband was not prepared. We ended up schlepping our sandwiches all the way back to La Canada to eat, but they were really good.

My fiance has ordered a few of their wok noodles (Rad nah, pad woon sen) and they were super delicious as well as generously portioned. I am so excited for there to be another authentic Thai restaurant in Atwater Village outside of Holy Basil, which is obviously very delicious but also extremely pricey.
