When dining in raw beef = ok as the broth is hot enough to cook it, but for takeaway, are you kidding? Besides being weird and gross seems downright unsafe. When I took it back and told them they said "put it in the microwave", I said "we don't have a microwave we're in a park" to which they replied "we don't recommend that dish for parks"- what a strange unhelpful reply. A solid spot for a quick, yummy dinner. Grabbed some takeout today and sat in the park by Silverlake Reservoir to eat. The counter was quite busy so had a bit of a wait for our food. I ordered the crispy tofu banh mi, "animal fries" (taro fries, animal-style a la In N Out) and a ginger lime-ade. The drink was very refreshing and seemed to get better the more it sat (weird!). The crispy tofu banh mi was fantastic. Solid flavours, perfectly filling, added avocado even though I didn't pay for it as an "extra" (which my bf said they add every time he orders this dish despite it being listed for extra money on the menu), and no skimping on the deliciously marinated tofu that I'd like to eat a bucket of alone. My only qualm today: the taro fries. They did not come animal style as I had ordered. Even if they had, I don't think I would have liked them. The fries themselves were lacking flavour, were too crunchy, and just didn't do it for me. This was the miss, and why my rating is a 4/5. Next time I'll opt for a totally different appetizer. The review before me is LITERALLY exactly what happened to me, except I actually went in and told the girl to her face what I wanted, I said Rib Eye Bowl, and she put in 2 orders of Rib eye ROLLS. Unfortunately I did not double check the order before leaving and I live about 40 minutes away from this place. I had initially ordered it because I was in the area. I've ordered from here MANY times and have never had an issue, but the lady was super rude about it and instead of knowing real customer service, she said she couldn't do anything about it and I had to go there and reorder what I wanted. I ordered the pork chops, salmon dish with coconut rice, spring rolls, and what I thought was a bottle of sauvignon blanc sparkling wine. It was an $80 delivery order. There was two sad pieces of thin pork chop pieces (it use to come with 4) and this tiny salmon over a little bit of rice. The spring rolls were only two rolls, about 2 inches each, for $10. totally overpriced. i thought it would come with 4. The salmon was over cooked and dry, the spring rolls were chewy and not fresh. I went for lunch, and had their steak rolls and wok-tossed chicken. The sauce for the steak rolls were AMAZING. With a slight hint of heat, it masterfully complimented the rolls. The chicken... It is rare that one can taste the freshness of the chicken. Wait! That didn't sound right. Let me just say that I tasted quality in ingredients and bursts of flavors. "Richard Simmons" and a bowl of Pho? White boy writing a Pho review..sounds pretty lame. But, this white boy has been eating Pho for over 20 years and remembers "Bolsa" being one corner. I admit the quality in Bolsa has decreased recently, but there still are good places to eat yummy food (Pho Lu Oxtail is my favorite). As such, I have never tasted pho like this. It was not bad. It was different. If you would have blind folded me I would never have guessed I ate pho. It was weird. The soup is OK, but since they label it as "Pho" I have to say I have had way better. I do understand they have to tailor the taste to the local community. **2 Stars** ~Cafe Sua Da (Ca Phe Sua Da) 2 Stars. I asked for Cafe Sua Da (French Press Coffee with condensed milk). The server had no idea what that it was. However, he took the time to find out and brought out a single server and made it fresh. If this was just an ice coffee, it was good (3 Stars..maybe 4). But, I wanted cafe sua da. Not sure what coffee they used but cafe sua da is strong and has a "bountiful" and "Bold" taste. This was weak. More weak than Richard Simmons. In fact, this is a place I would expect Richard Simmons to hang out at. Overall, the food was not bad and the quality was good. However, they labeled the food as Vietnamese and "pho" so I have to admit I have had way better. On the good side, I did expect worse. I understand that this is not an authentic pho restaurant, but it's an insult to call that a pho. The price is expensive too for a bowl of pho. I think it's almost $8. The Gingergrass Chicken meal and salad are amazing, as are the eggplant, clay curry pot and Shaking beef. Fast forward to today. I found out through their sister restaurant that they deliver! SCORE! Not so much. Everything arrived luke warm (not gingergrass's fault as they use a service called "caviar" for their delivery. When I opened my $50 order of food which included $14 gratiuity from 'caviar' I noticed that nearly everything in my order was 3/4 filled up. From the rice, to the Gingergrass salad which I ordered two of, to the calamari, which NO JOKE was 2 sporkfuls. I was shocked. In restaurant I've never seen such skimping and nonsense? WTF... I've eaten here 30+ times and THIS is the calamari you give me? This was ALL I got. It was soggy, moist, and I had to throw it in the oven to crisp it up. It wasn't even worth my time. They begrudgingly comped her, but they DIDN'T offer her a free tetanus shot, which I would have deemed appropriate had I been at the scene of the crime. But listen, I can't fight my sister's battles, can I? 'Tis genuinely hard to like this place, without comparing it against my many years of eating delicious authentic Vietnamese pho (or at least, So Cal pho). I can't help but feel like Gingergrass is watered down, white-ified Vietnamese cuisine. Which means the flavors generally are muted, and the portions are terribly terribly small. Still, what can I expect from Silverlake? Gingergrass serves a need in this neighborhood that I have taken advantage of on several occassion when I've no other semi-decent Asian option around. My main complaint is our waitress: she acts just a little bit too chummy, doesn't ever bother writing down the order, and this all gives off a sense of smugness, rather than confidence. But what really bothers me (and this occurred on two separate occasions too many), is that, right after she sets down our food, and before either of us have had the opportunity for a first bite, she comes flouncing back to our table to ask us, "So how's everything, guys?" I have no idea why this is so infuriating to me, but I want to slap the bitch. Instead, I have coldly looked up from the spoonful of food I was about to put in my mouth, and replied in a measured tone, "I wouldn't know. I haven't even had the chance to eat yet." Just a couple blocks from the lake and next door to a dentist office sits this small and unassuming Vietnamese restaurant. There's a handful of tables up front, but if you blink while driving by, you'll miss it. Especially because the main sign is on the side of Brier Ave., not Glendale, along with the entrance. The interior is on the small side with exposed wood beams on the ceiling with minimal design other than the chalk board hanging above the registers with the daily specials. The menu has a bunch of Vietnamese favorites including noodles, rice, chicken, fish, and beef. To get things started we got an order of crispy crab and shrimp Imperial rolls (with fresh herbs, cucumbers, pickled vegetables, lettuce wrap, and nuoc cham dipping sauce). These small rolls were fried nicely and the crab and shrimp were both fresh and tasty. Along with these we got the grilled vegetable rice paper rolls (with asparagus, zucchini, red bell peppers, shitake mushrooms, rice noodles, lettuce, and fresh herbs with vegan nuoc cham sauce). These rolls were just as good and the nuoc cham sauce was delicious with them both! For my main course I landed on the wok-tossed noodles (egg noodles with baked tofu, bean sprouts, scallions, carrots, cabbage, and egg with peanuts and shallots). The egg noodles were amazing and the baked tofu was great too! Each slice had crispy edges and a soft middle but not to the point of mushiness. Even though we stayed mostly healthy for the first portions of the meal, dessert was next. The special dessert for the day was the fried banana spring rolls. These small rolls had fried and crispy shells, like egg rolls, and a warm, rich banana and chocolate filling. The coconut dipping sauce was nice, but the rolls were just as good without it! Though most of Silver Lake is a toss up for parking, this area isn't too bad. There's a private and free parking lot for customers only behind the restaurant, but even if that's full the meters along the side street are 10-hour parking! I usually love coming here, but the service I had last night was some of the worst I've had in LA since moving here 12 years ago. It felt like maybe they fired their previous staff and hired new people without training them...then got them stoned. Firstly, ordering at the window took about 20 minutes because the woman taking my order "can't believe I fucked this up so bad." Extremely unprofessional and not something you want to hear before you give someone your credit card. I believe the "fuck up" was because she was trying to give her friends a discount, but gave it to the wrong table then mixed up the order. Anyway, not my business. The paper pho spoons were extremely annoying and felt like eating soup with folded up binder paper. Did the staff convince management that washing spoons was too difficult? Possibly. I could get over that BUT THE BEEF WAS RAW. Bright red, and the noodles were not fully cooked. The broth was room temp so no hope of cooking it. The waiter's solution was to bring us hot broth to cook it in (?). But then he NEVER CAME BACK. His excuse was that they had run out of beef pho. Ok, let us know? We waited for 15 minutes. I changed my order to chicken pho which was cheaper than my order because it had no added vegetables but I still got charged for the raw beef. It was nice that they came to apologize but while she was apologizing she asked if we needed anything else..."yes...the shrimp crisps we ordered 20 minutes ago...." I was honestly embarrassed for them. I kept my tab open because I was ordering wine, and when I paid I got a 20% discount (was that the same discount your table of friends received that caused you to mess up someone else's order?). My friend who ordered the same thing I did and paid when he ordered got no discount...also his replacement food was also cheaper than the raw beef pho. I felt guilted into giving a 15% tip because not tipping waiters during COVID seems like a shitty thing to do, but honestly I have little faith that the staff would be successful in any industry regardless of what I tip. I'm really upset that they got so much of my money when Id much rather go to an ethnic restaurant and get delicious food for 1/5 of the price and not have to stare at cold soup and raw beef for 30 minutes while I wonder if I'm the asshole in the situation. read more

Having passed by this place lots of times, I finally found myself eating here with my boyfriend a few weeks back when we were looking for a place to have dinner. We had my dog with me, but the waitress was very obliging and let me know that they love dogs and were fine with him eating with us in their outdoor eating area. The inside dining room looked minimalistic but warm and romantic with candles offering soft lighting to the guests. The outside was a bit chilly, but the staff lit up some heat lamps and it was downright toasty by the time our food hit the table. Having very little experience with Vietnamese food, I defer to my boyfriend who has more experience with it than I do and has even had Vietnamese food in Vietnam before. We both got pho (mine was their vegan pho and he had the chicken), and we both agreed that our meals were very good. I loved the fresh ingredients, the perfectly cooked veggies, the large portions, and delicate seasoning. Our appetizer was also delicious-- noodle dumplings with a wonderful dipping sauce. Their egg rolls come with all the vegetables I love to have with Vietnamese egg rolls and were very crispy and delicious. Papaya salad had no flavor and was already dressed with nuoc cham before it came to me. Calamari were teeny tiny wisps of seafood with the sweet and sour dipping sauce you can get from a bottle at 99 Ranch. Spring rolls, don't even get me started on the soggy-ass rice paper on the spring rolls. A Vietnamese novice cook knows to take the rice paper from boiling water before it becomes a soggy mess. Curry cod was a mess. I don't even care about authenticity at this point. (Note:I have never seen this dish anywhere else or understand how it's even Vietnamese.) First, they over-boiled the vermicelli noodles. Then they put curry on top of the cod and straight up dumped a can of coconut milk all over the top. It was STILL bland. Does anyone taste test recipes around here?? Salmon with coconut rice. I didn't get a chance to taste the salmon, but the rice was again, soggy. What is with this place and the inability to properly prepare starches so that it's not a soggy mess?? The ONLY good thing here is the pork belly. This used to be a great spot. Then many things started to change and they lost the formula that made it a nice neighborhood spot with awesome tasting food. I accepted the higher prices for items. Visited at least once a week. Now they removed great items from menu such as shrimp fritters and the legacy dishes do not have that great taste any more. How did they manage to mess up the great chicken pho and now serve bland soupy mix with small portion of chicken. The food is ab fab, I gave it 4 stars...not 5 because the service is not really grade A as the food is, Which is a terrible disappointment to me. When I first discovered this place I would have it 3-4x a week. I recommend my favorite dish, the shaking beef. But alas, I could only take so much of their bad service, long waits and hi prices. I haven't been there in months, who knows maybe they have improved on their one fault. Rich and flavourful vegetarian broth without being too salty is really hard to come by. I got an organic tofu noodle bowl and coconut lime bar for dinner tonight. I liked the noodle bowl with lightly crispy cubes of tofu (think Agedashi Tofu). I would have liked a bit more nuoc cham, but I enjoyed fresh veggies, cold noodles and tons of tofu. The coconut lime bar came with a scoop of ginger ice cream, which was consumed rather too quickly. I had to force myself to save a sliver of the bar for my boyfriend, but it was DELICIOUS! It was smooth, creamy, tangy, and not crazy sweet. I could eat a whole industrial cake sheet of it in one sitting. The service is always good, and now I know their dessert is good. read more

Food and services: It serves alright Viet food but compared to the Viet restaurants in the LA area, this restaurant is expensive, portions are small and service is bad. I had a group of 10 the other night and I called to make a reservation for 7 and called later again to update my reservation to 10 people. However, during my second call, they revealed that they can't take reservations but will just try to accommodate us...so why didn't they tell me that in the firs place?? When I arrived I asked the waiter if they can store my cake in the fridge, the waiter at the cashier rolled his eyes and gasped as they took my cake. If they didn't want to do it, that's fine but don't give customers attitude. The waiter for my own table was great though, she was really attentive to our party. The food was just okay and portions are small. I had the imperial noodle bowl, it was lacking flavor and I had to douce it with lots of hot sauce. The shrimp chips are AMAZINGGGG though. First of all, the place's food is not good. The rice and tofu were totally mushy and soggy and the lettuce in our rolls and wraps was black and slimy around the edges with mold. Secondly, our soup arrived on its side at the bottom of a paper bag. All of the soup had spilled out of its container and was pooled in the dirty plastic bag, making it undrinkable. We wanted pho, so we went through the trouble of ordering a SECOND delivery order of pho. It arrived exactly the same way. I called to let the restaurant know that, despite two orders, we weren't able to eat either one because both soups had completely emptied into the plastic bag. The young lady who answered the phone said she was so sorry and blamed the driver. "We tell them to be careful." I pointed out that it isn't a driver problem, it's a packaging problem. If you put a soup container at the bottom of a big, filmsy paper bag with no bottom structure, and the driver carries it by the handle at the top, the soup will tip over 100% of the time. This is not a magic trick; this is physics. After blaming the drivers multiple times, she said "There's nothing I can do, it's out of my hands," which is an absurd statement. I pointed out that, there is plenty she can do. For instance, she could refund one of our soups. She said she can't do that because the order was through Postmates. Well, then, I pointed out that she could offer a discount on a future order. This was the easiest possible customer service concession. She actually refused! She just kept repeating there was nothing she could do. She simply didn't care. There are so many other great, family-owned Vietnamese restaurants in LA that need your business. There is no reason to order from a mediocre place who argues with its customers, blames everyone else, doesn't consider there may be a better way to do things, and can't be troubled to offer you at least a discount on a future order to keep a customer when they lost two meals in one night due to bad packaging. read more

Gingergrass is one of those restaurants that I've been meaning to try for a long time. Were my expectations high because of that...probably. Gingergrass has a pretty chilled vibe. It's right down the street from the Red Lion Tavern and right across the street from Silver Lake Wines. The place is standard Silverlake. Too cool for school, yet it doesn't take itself too serious. Our waitress was a tad bit snooty though. Her vibe was one of you don't really look like one of us so I'm annoyed that I have to serve you. The other waiter who helped us out was a lot better. The food is...interesting to say the least. They start you off with fish chips with a hoisin dipping sauce. A weird combination to say the least. We got the chicken wings which had a good crust on it, yet it was completely overpowered by the coconut dipping sauce. Then we went to the pork belly over pea shoots. It was quite the unbalanced dish as the pork belly portions were small and the pea shoot basically covered the whole plate. Mind you these weren't blanched pea shoots. Just raw so you can't really eat them in a graceful way. Yup... yours truly went to the other side of the 405! I know... shocking right?! I'm fortunate enough to have gone here with my close friend and her husband for dinner... on a late Sunday night. I think we passed the rush hour crowd and was able to sit right away. Staff were friendly and prompt. We shared their calamari which were well seasoned and not to oily... good stuff. I think I remember getting the pork chop entree since I was craving for meat... and since I had a long drive back to SM... I opted to get the Vietnamese Coffee... but I was hoping that they'd give it to me with the dripper and I'd transfer it onto my own accord but it came with ice already... fail! Anyway, back to my entree... it was a fairly decent size and of course I inhaled it! I haven't had Asian food in ages before this dinner! Good food... good company... good service... good prices... Ginger limeade with a beer topper. Trust me. Do it. Gingergrass - you rock! Get the wok tossed noodles. It's a winner. Also, the hot wings with the sour cream dipping sauce (which I believe was a special, so I'm not sure if it was on the regular menu) were freaking delicious. Tiger shrimp = yes. And i'm not a huge seafoodie, either. They have other interesting drinks as well. They sound yummy and interesting! Silverlake is super lucky to have Gingergrass.
