We are so stumped why this place only has 3.5 stars! The food was sooo good and the service was great. They have lots of outdoor seating options and it was perfect for a sunny day. We got the tofu dumplings to start. What we loved was all the freshness combined with them. I think they would have been stronger if they were pan fried with a little crunch but they were good! The showstoppers were: 1. the tofu wok tossed noodles! DELICIOUS. I deeply appreciate that they use organic tofu. Not too wet or saucy at all - they were perfect. After walking a few laps around the reservoir, a friend of mine and I decided we were starved and wanted a out-door sit-down restaurant, with something cozy and yummy for dinner. We decided on Gingergrass. Upon on arrival, Gingergrass recently concocted a delightful outdoor dining in the the former parking lot area: equipped with big screen TV's for Football games, heat lamps, hand sanitizer machine, and string lights. See images below. We ordered matching Pho, Vietnamese soups and sat down to thoughtfully prepared paper spoons and disposable silverware with bow ties. My friend is Uber fussy, and they handled her attention-mobbing nuttiness with aplomb. I was embarrassed per usual. But they laughed it off, and even threw-in an additional spritzer on the house. That was very kind guys. I just died a lil inside. Needless to say, it was a wonderful warm, cozy evening: full of good food, football games, hand sanitizer and heat lamps, and odd company. Hate to give a bad review to a place I've liked for years but: I ordered food from gingergrass tonight and the delivery was incomplete (missing an entree). The delivery service refunded the cost of the menu it but not the $10+ in fees. The mistake was Gingergrass's, not the service. When I called Gingergrass to let them know, the person on the phone said, 'do you want to drive over and get it?' Um, no. No offer from Gingergrass beyond that. To top it off , the crab shrimp imperial rolls were fried beyond belief and dripping oil. The ginger limeade was good at least and sorry for venting. Who does this with toasted sour dough bread. Summer roll could have been descent. But, who put pork and shrimp together in this. Finally the seafood Pho. I wanted to leave right there and then. Superb service and I'd say a very good option when you're looking for a low-key spot, good for groups, moderate prices, and good food. It's hard to find all of those in one place nowadays. I ordered the clay pot yellow curry, which I think is more Thai? Regardless, the dish was awesome. A little spicy and great flavor. My friends ordered all for Bahn mi sandwiches, I don't think they're super authentic? at least that's what someone else had said, but, everyone enjoyed them nonetheless. When a restaurant has survived in LA for as long as Gingergrass has, then you know they're doing something right! I decided to get a few different options to try, and it was quite the feast. The Vietnamese Broken Fried Rice with shrimp was phenomenal-- sure, it might be hard to mess up fried rice, but this felt elevated by their farm fresh eggs and herbs. The Crispy Imperial Rolls with the crab and shrimp were perfect. These were so flavorful, and you can't beat that experience of biting through the crisp outer shell into that warm, rich, soft pillow of seafood. I also loved the Pan-Seared Salmon. It was wonderfully cooked with a nice soy ginger flavor on a bed of black coconut rice mixed with a vinegary apple slaw. The Taro Fries were also a fun side to add. The aioli it was served with had a nice little kick. I also got the vegetarian pho. This one I would skip next time. I've enjoyed their beef pho in the past--the baked tofu just doesn't do it for me. I just had a beef pho I ordered on doordash. It is $20...I think it is expensive for a pho but I had no other choice. I really wanted to eat a pho but my go to places weren't available. This pho is 100% the best pho I ever had in my 17 years of pho eating life. I don't even think I had had any authentic pho before. I've never been to Vietnam or had any pho other than in LA. I love this place. My boyfriend and I come here regularly and never get tired of it. The food is delicious, I love the Vietnamese chicken salad, and would say it's one of my favorite salads in the city. The bun noodle bowl, the chicken pho, any of the the banh mi options, and the fresh rice paper rolls never disappoint. And the imperial rolls! And the young papaya salad. Seriously, the whole menu. Also stop by for their 14$ lunch special. Aside from loving their food, the staff is always friendly- special shout out to Edie for being an exceptionally kind human, and great server. I've never had an issue when it comes to parking. I can usually find parking near by. It's a quaint little Vietnamese restaurant with outside seating. When I came to eat here, I was actually the only Asian customer. Everyone else were white hipsters, so I think that's an interesting fact. I ordered the bahn mi, Vietnamese chicken salad, crispy calamari and eggrolls. Everything was decent (not the best Vietnamese food I've had, but it wasn't bad). I have been coming to Gingergrass for quite a while now, and it's such a comfort to visit a restaurant after you haven't been for a bit and have the meal be exactly as good as you remember! We came for lunch today (it's been a year or two) and I, of course, got the tofu lunch plate. So so delicious. I was bummed to see the basil lime elixir is no longer offered, but the Vietnamese iced coffee is still there and still amazing. I'm not sure I love the new bar area in the restaurant - there's significantly less indoor seating now, but I imagine at dinnertime the bar is a good focal point. Our server recommended the bread pudding dessert and it was a fantastic way to round out our meal - do not miss that one if they haven't run out!!! It was one friend's first time and they were torn on what dish to get, so we promised we'd be back soon in the new year so they could try more - and so I can get more tofu. Kudos for their daily happy hour food menu (3-6 p.m.). Service was excellent. Still not blown away by the food. Banh mi (pork) was too sticky and sweet. The hard bread issue I referenced in a previous review has been corrected, however. The sweetness of the pork overpowered the flavors of the other ingredients on the sandwich. The wings were huge and flavorful but extremely sticky and sweet (this is referenced on the menu, however) but they make a mess (even more so than buffalo chicken wings due to the stickiness). I don't think I have ever said anything about water in a review but this one may be a first. The tap water was awful--and I am not usually picky. Wasn't sure if the cups had not been completely rinsed or it was just bad water. It was cloudy when I was pouring it from the bottle the restaurant provided which indicates a potential issue. Tried this place for the first time today. I ordered 2 beef phos with chicken broth 2 shrimp/pork spring rolls 1 banana cream pie The packaging was super on point. Finally a container that's big enough to eat out of. The broth was a little lighter on flavor than I'm used too but I personally didn't mind. The noodles and beef were fresher than ever. I can say that without a question the beef was the highest quality beef I've had in any pho by far. It is served raw but cooks beautifully in the broth. As far as the spring rolls go. They were tasty but not the best I've had. I think the rice paper could be thinner which would also make it less chewy. Still tasty nonetheless. I originally was siding against getting the Bananna cream pie but the girl I was placing an order with told me I'd regret not getting it and boy was she right. It was delicious. I hadn't been to Gingergrass in about 10 years, having since moved out of the area. I came back a few days ago and was pleased to find my favorite dish, the Wok Tossed Noodles, was still on the menu! I was even more pleased to find the flavor in this dish was still as great, and as fresh as ever. I had the pleasure of running into the Manager during my meal and was happy to tell him so . My meal and the service was so great that I came back the next two nights for dinner afterwards :) I highly recommend the wok tossed noodles to start if you've never dined here before, as well as the summer rolls as an appetizer. Restaurants come and go like wildfire in this area. This location first opened when I was in High School and has stood the test of time. I make sure to come here more than a few times a year. This place is always good. Their menu is simple but well done. If you are a fan of noodles my favorite dish is the wok tossed noodles with beef. I have ordered this more than a dozen times and it it a great noodle dish. Second favorite would be their salmon dish. It is cooked perfect every time, the sauce/marinade has good flavor that does not overpower the fish. Very good Dish. For appetizers, try the imperial rolls. I have also had the shaking beef and the pho as well. Both are good, but the other dishes I mentioned outshine their menu. Overall this place serves great Vietnamese/American dishes that are well prepared. I have come for lunch and dinner. This place has never disappointed me. Chris L and I were both last minute stood up for lunch on Friday and we decided to meet here since it was a sort of halfway point from campus back home for me, and he had an errand to run nearby. We started with the animal fries - we may have been hangry but trying to hang on. LOL. The fries are taro fries tossed in turmeric and topped with a spicy aioli, peppers, onions, and cilantro. Surprisingly good, they could top them with shaking beef and then it would be like Vietnamese style carne asada fries? IDK just a thought! For my meal I ordered the bun vermicelli noodles with pork. I was contemplating trying other food, but it was already taking a long time so I figured I would order something fairly easy to put together. Chris ordered chicken salad so I was trying to match the food prep pace. Anyhow, my strategy did not work at all and it still took forever. It was fine, we were able to chat and also check multiple work emails UGH. I've never left a SECOND review on the same place before...can anyone recommend another restaurant that has a very similar style Vietnamese "inspired" menu?... this is THE MOST INCONSISTENT restaurant I've ever eaten at. I eat here all the same. Same dishes each time. I felt compelled to write this because I just picked up an order and they said give us 15 minutes and we'll call your name. I waited almost 45 minutes and was about to get in line to ask about my order but the line was too long. I eventually went up and it turns out my order had been sitting for the whole 30 mins...this seems to happen every time because they're only used to online and call in orders and people coming up to ask for the order, DO NOT place a to go order in person. This is how this happens. Food ended up being cold when I got home and drink melted because it had been sitting. NOT ONLY THAT but the portion they gave me tonight was literally HALF of what I get every other time and the pieces off beef were all tiny. I had to take a picture because it was comical and it doesn't do it justice. Also, this dish sometimes has a slightly different sauce in the meat, sometimes it's just oil. Sometimes there's herbs in the sauce, sometimes just onion. Sometimes chilis, sometimes not. Tonight was barely any meat and just onion and 2 chilis. I think this is the last time I'll be eating here until they get their act together. After going to pick the order up and driving home I couldn't be bothered to go back and get a refund.
