let me start by saying I'm an easy going person who reluctantly leaves negative reviews. Any restaurant can have an off moment, the owner doesn't have complete control over staff, whatever. To be brief the food was generally decent with the exception of the calamari which was pretty awful; breading over thin rubber bands. The drink order was off, wrong beer, which I ignored. When the main corse arrived we ordered a second round of drinks which never came. lingered a bit waiting for the drinks that never came until we caught the waitress, no apology. ordered desert and literally as they cleared it away we were informed they "needed our table"........we had been there 1:45 minutes with appetizer, mains and desert. When I pointed out that if our drink order had showed up maybe we would have been done the staff person just turned and walked away. To add insult to injury there was a built in tip of 18%, I consistently leave 25% or more. The experience ruined an evening. This just isn't what should happen in any credible restaurant. read more

We stopped here for dinner on an upstate weekend trip from NYC and found the food to be amazing. I got the seafood fra diavolo and my partner got the carbonara. I ordered a glass of Sangiovese and thought it was very good as well. The dessert was the standout. We ordered the chocolate chip cannoli, which had a very light, airy, but flavorful ricotta filling. The chocolate chips were sweet but not too sweet. The real touch of brilliance was the use of the shaved orange peels within the ricotta filling, which really gave the rich dessert a kick of zest. The contrast was very pleasing. The interior of the restaurant is cozy but spacious, with white walls hung with old black and white photographs. The staff was friendly and service was excellent. We would highly recommend this restaurant if you're staying in and around Saugerties, Woodstock, or Tivoli! read more

After eating some amazing dinners at the wonderful Mercato Enoteca in Red Hook, which sadly is permanently closed, we were excited to try Francesco's new restaurant, GioBatta in Tivoli. We were pretty disappointed. The burrata and prosciutto appetizer was fine, though uninspired. Next we had a house salad which, according to the menu, has a lemon emulsion but came with a balsamic dressing - when we asked the server, she seemed blank, as if she didn't know what we were talking about. I asked to see a menu to make sure I wasn't crazy, and when I pointed it out she said she'd ask the chef but never returned with any explanation. Odd, as there was no balsamic on ANY of the salads on the menu. Our entrees (only 3 available) were the steak - tasty but not very tender- and chicken parmigiana - very run of the mill, like any ordinary Italian place. The other option would have been the grilled fish. GioBatta has a pretty, unadorned decor and friendly staff, but we were expecting awesome, as everything we'd ever had at Mercato was to die for, like being back in Italy. Definitely not returning to GioBatta. :( read more

Just went for our first time and we're delighted. We expected problems with the service, based on reviews: NOPE. We were promptly, and warmly greeted, seated (outside, as requested; even though it was raining lightly we were dry under the eaves) and food was DELICIOUS. (We were there for lunch.) Additionally, the coffee was great, as were the desserts. Tivoli is a little tucked-away place that is well worth your time and energy to visit. GioBatta can be proud of the food, service and decor they've provided. read more

We went twice this weekend, and both times the food and drinks were delicious. We had quite the assortment of pastas, salads, antipasto and dessert over the two meals (lunch & dinner) and there was not a single one that I felt missed the mark. Would happily recommend everything on the menus. But what sets this apart was the service- they were so kind and accommodating each time, even though we did not have a reservation and requested a table on the patio (we did have to wait but that's to be expected and they were super flexible). Clearly busy but were super apologetic and lovely and I like that they add the 18% gratuity automatically (it says so on the menu) to disperse tips among the entire staff. read more

Just phoned them quietly inquiring about a pannacotta I got today with a sell -by date of two days ago. It said it had been packed on 7/27. I just wanted to know if this was ok. Was surprised to learn this luxury pudding might be made far ahead.The first person gruffly said they didn't sell things a week and a half old and huffed off to get someone else for me to speak with-Francesco.He promptly yelled at me "How does it taste, how does it taste, that's all we care about, is it green?" I hadn't really spoken yet. I wondered silently how it would have tasted differently a week earlier, and said "You are speaking to me in a very fierce tone". He shouted, "You are annoying me- either never come back here or ( eat it or something), I don't care." Then he hung up on me. Appalling. good food. Very rude lady manager. She apologized at the end of the dinner but the damage was done as she spoiled a birthday dinner. Customers are not treated equally. They seem to be more attentive to the local repeat customers at the expense of anybody else (better tables, speed of service...). I was a great fan and frequent customer at their place in Red Hook. Unfortunately, they have managed to take everything that was great--such as the food and service--and grind it into the ground. Notwithstanding, they are not afraid to charge for their substandard service. We ordered at 6 pm for a 730 pickup. I was told upon arrival at 730 that the order would take 5 minutes more. I was told the same thing 10 minutes later. Twenty minutes later I found out that I had been lied to and that the order was only half-done: one of the cooked dishes had already been sitting for at least 15 minutes. I eventually got an accurate story when I managed to get a server to speak to me. The server could not tell me when my dinner would be ready, so I asked for the manager. The manager tried to say "5 more minutes", but gave me a credit once he admitted that he could not tell me when my order would be ready. In the meantime, the indoor restaurant was very crowded without appropriate distancing, and few people were wearing masks. The staff was not enforcing mask rules. At one pointi, I had to push away an unmasked man who intruded to speak over my shoulder to the manager while the manager was dealing with me. So, poor service, bad food prep coordination, lying about when the food would be ready and not maintaining mask and social distancing with customers eating indoors. GioBatti was the most unpleasant food ordering experience I have had since the beginning of the epidemic. read more

Terrible food and even worse service. My friends and I had reservations tonight at 6:30. When we showed up we were told to wait a "small moments" while they waited for a table to pay their check. The table in question then got served their dessert. There were no other tables available. We waited at the bar for half an hour, and when that table was free she sat another three people. When I asked her why we weren't getting that table, she told us those people had an earlier reservation. She then went on to explain to us that everybody, like us, was headed to a show and it gets very crowded, as if it is our responsibility and fault that there wasn't a table available at the time they promised us. She went on to explain that it is always as crowded when there is a show. If that were the case, shouldn't they take fewer reservations? Again, how was this our fault? At this point we had no choice because we had tickets to a show, so we ended up eating at the bar. To make things worse, the food was terrible. The calamari was cold, the bruschetta was inedible, and the prosciutto was of poor quality. We got no apologies or even a free drink offered. I will never return here again. I highly recommend avoiding it. read more

Lovely place with ok food, not great; we shared the arugula salad which had really little taste and the chicken marsala which was good. We will come back because it's so pleasant sitting on the porch and the staff is good but it's not our favorite restaurant in the area. read more

Absolute bummer of a night here. It's SO cute and the food is great- but the service was so insultingly bad we wouldn't go back, which is a real shame. We were sat without menus, so I eventually grabbed a couple from the bar, and then we sat for a full 20 minutes (I checked- yikes!!) before anyone came over to say hi or take a drink order. We really felt bad for our server- she had a huge party she was taking care of, so we figured she was tied up with them. But we saw her once to take our order and then even after they left, the service didn't improve. We sat with empty glasses and would've loved another round of drinks, but no one approached us literally from the time we got our food til our server asked if we wanted to see dessert menus. By that point we had been sitting with empty glasses and empty plates for so long, we just wanted the check and to go home. Being two long term service industry people ourselves, we were excited to support a restaurant that adds an automatic 18% gratuity to checks, but I can't help but wonder if our server didn't make more of an effort with us because she knew she'd get at least that regardless. read more

We absolutely adore GioBatta's and have been consistently impressed for over 10 years. The food is outstanding; fresh, balanced and authentic. In fact, it is hard to spread out and go elsewhere when you know GioBatta is going to knock you out. We love that the Chef is a jovial, one-of-a kind personality with the highest standard for northern Italian cuisine, the way his grandmother taught him on the olive farm he grew up on, outside of Rome. You can taste that. The biggest challenge is keeping up with the customer demand, especially post Covid, when consistent staff is hard-to-find. The staff that stays are hard working and earnest, and deserve a shout out. Another challenge is that the customer base is increasingly NYC visitors who could use some manners and patience. This is not the Hamptons. The Hudson River Valley is made up of real people, running real businesses, for their real families. Going to GioBatta's it going to the real deal....slow down, stay a while, and give some love to get some love. read more

Delicious pastas and fish. Haven't tried the meat or chicken dishes. Our table ordered orchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe, swordfish, and a variety of salads. All were excellent. A bonus is the takeout section with terrific eggplant parmigiana, meatballs, cheeses and hard to find Italian groceries. The reason I don't give it a 5 is the noise level...the dining room is so noisy, even when there are some empty tables. That conversation must be shouted, which multiplied by 7 or 8 other tables, males quite a din. There is lovely outdoor seating, but it was all taken by 6:00, and we could see the diners swatting away flies constantly. read more

Food is delicious and portions are just the right size. I actually was happily sated with the Caprese salad appetizer as the main meal- sweet ripe tomatoes, creamy, soft bufula mozzarella and fresh basil, all seasoned perfectly in evoo. My husband's tuna was cooked just tight with plenty of white beans and broccoli rabe on the side. Splurge for the warm, soft, yet crispy focaccia (bread is not free.) Sitting on the front porch with a glass of wine on the quietest Broadway was a summer pleasure. I don't know about inside but outside there was no loud music. There was no music at all which contributed to the relaxed ambiance. Desserts looked great but strolling the one block town with an ice cream cone from a nearby shop looked even more enticing. As soon as the busboy brought a bucket of ice and put in our bottle of red wine, we should have made a quick exit. You were deafened immediately. The waiter took our order and served our friends salad at least 5 minutes before ours. We asked to split ours which finally arrived. Three at the table ordered the same entree. Our friends dishes arrived as did my husbands. 10 minutes passed as I awaited my order. Questioning the waiter I was informed he thought we were sharing our dish a we shared our salad. With that presumption he should have either divided the portion or brought 2 plates, neither occurred. When he took back my husbands pasta which would have made a termite happy, tasting like a 2 x 4, he returned with a split portions instead of one entree each. When asking for a spoon from another employee we were told they do not serve table spoons for pasta. Upon receiving the check the waiter stated he was sorry and would remove the cost of one pasta entree, which we of course we never received. Horrendous service, poorly prepared food and employees. Food was mediocre and the service was horrendous. Took 20 minutes to get a fork and the waitress was nonchalant and moody. We were having a good time and we were just about to leave after only an hour and a half when the sexist manager came over and asked us to leave. This of course happened the second after the only male at the table left. We spent a lot of money on our (overpriced) meals and we were dissapointed by the extravagantly rude service. Great outdoor dining and solid food & wine here. The plates are well crafted. But, BEWARE that they are now automatically adding about 15% tip to every check. It is never mentioned and not noted on the menu. You MUST FIGURE THIS OUT YOURSELF at the end of the meal when reviewing the credit card slip, otherwise you will end up paying over 35% tip! The service was fine, but that extra $$$ paid and only noticed later is a slap in the face. Be very clear with your policies, otherwise you unnecessary anger your loyal followers.
