After reading some reviews, I definitely think I came here at the wrong time and took the risk that didn't pay off in terms of "local bar food." I was looking for an after work burger and beer and had been wanting to try Gio's for a long time. The service was quick in terms of the server checking in and getting the food to me, but that was about the best part of the experience. The size of the beer pour was also decent. I went with the regular burger (Gio's burger) and they advertise homemade fries. The fries were the farthest thing from homemade and the burger was beyond lackluster. I'm pretty sure they were Ore-Idea or another frozen fry type. They were pretty cold. It was something I could definitely make at home and honestly have a better quality. It's a pretty decent spot to hang with your dog on the patio, too. If I were to return, I definitely see advertisements for karaoke and trivia nights. I'd probably just stick to drinks and maybe some wings or nachos. I don't think I'd trust other items that claim to be "homemade" on the menu. read more

This place is small but fun! We came here for their first "naughty bingo" night and had a great time. Make a reservation! It's a small, neighborhood bar with all you would expect. Multiple TVs, nice bar, fairly good drink selection and tasty food. The service was good, but sometimes slow. I don't think they expected so many people for the bingo. No worries. Definitely check their specials, because they were good! They do have some outside seating but it was too cold when we were there. Good regulars as well. If you're in the neighborhood, this should be your neighborhood bar and you should be a regular. read more

Coming back to our old stomping grounds after almost 15 years! We can't believe our regular Friday/Saturday karaoke nights!!! Service is as friendly as ever-- the owner really knows how to pick his employees!!! There was an issue when we were there with a guest and bartender handled it smoothly. My love and I started off a Saturday Funday by going to Gio's BBQ Bar and Grill, located on Damen a block north of Lawrence. Gio's is a sports bar with screens showing various sporting events during our lunchtime visit (Cubs baseball, EuroCup soccer, Wimbledon tennis, and other action). The walls showcase some photos of local sports legends (Michael Jordan, Brian Urlacher). Gio's also has Karaoke and Trivia nights, so they are not just a sports bar. Gio's has a good amount of sidewalk patio seating. We chose to sit at an indoor table, so we had that area practically all to ourselves as most of the patrons were congregating at the bar or sitting outside. Our youthful servers were pleasant and prompt. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, and it was quite tasty indeed. Although not heavily sauced, the pork had an appealing crispness to it that paired well with the toasted brioche bun. I chose cornbread casserole as my side (other listed choices are fries, mac and cheese, or coleslaw), and basically it is a wedge of cornbread with some creamed corn blended in the mix. My love enjoyed the Gio's Burger and side order of fries. She also liked her goblet of sangria, and my Maplewood Beer on tap was refreshing. read more

My friends and I decided on a whim to check out the Friday night karaoke. We're so glad we did. There was a couple that just got married and they started the party off with a duet. The whole bar joined in and there was such a joyful and supportive vibe. The whole night people were either dancing to the karaoke or backing up the singers. My first time at GIO'S bar and grill, wasn't as I expected from the beginning there were slammed, and I came in with my three grandchildren and my daughter, and sat down and outside dining and what would seem forever to get our order took a 360 turn when Sarah came to the rescue and applied the best customer service I've ever seen in a very long time truly grateful and a wonderful staff and do their very best care for their customer first wonderful kind and cheerful place to be great food and the peace offering was exquisite. If you're craving some pulled pork in your life, hop on over to Gio's. They use a really nice sauce that's not all vinegar or all sugar; it's balanced. This also isn't the place where the meat is swimming in sauce. Our order came out in a very reasonable amount of time and I really liked the grilled bun. It was pretty quiet when we came by, so if I'm looking for ambiance I might try a weekend night. The fries were also pretty good. Glad we finally came by here! read more

Gio's, you get five stars from me, you're a neighborhood bar and you do what you do well. A small variety of beers, food that's well, neighborhood bar food and sometimes you need neighborhood bar food. You did catch me off guard with soup that was either really good, or just really hot because it was really cold sitting outside. Regardless the staff is attentive and the location is convenient. We live within walking distance and I would never go out of my way to provide bad reviews of a neighborhood place without good reason. This past weekend, however, we went for a happy hour drink and snack. Seems the vendor for their food had changed and the food was not as plentiful or flavorful as in the past. Okay, fine, time's are difficult right now. But when the bill came, we noticed that we'd been overcharged for our appetizer. We brought it to the attention of our waitress who said, "Oh, yea, our print menus are out of date. That's the price now." I couldn't believe it. The establishment would not honor the price advertised. What would stop any business from making the same excuse? Totally unacceptable. The only reason for the additional star is that the service has always been friendly. read more

Service was really, really good. The bartender was working her butt off while the owner/manager simply sat at the bar drinking Irish coffee, eating brunch, and watching videos on his phone. Why are you there if you are not going to help? Most people were eating brunch during the Bears game, we did not. Food was obviously frozen including wings and onion rings. The onion rings were especially bad. I would recommend they scale down the menu considerably. Regardless, the service was the star of the show. read more

The woman bartender is a ROCK star. DJs for the karaoke nights are great sports and super fun. I'm not sure if the other bad reviews I've seen about the owner are also the same guy who works behind the bar? The one with the crusty goatee and brown hair but he gives off the biggest incel vibes. Any interaction me or any of my girls have had with him he's been extremely rude. I once saw him pick out two girls from a huge party (full of men) and yell at them for sneaking in alcohol (they were clearly confused because they weren't the ones doing it). He was rude to my sister when I brought her in on her 21st. And rarely keeps the bathroom restocked with toilet paper. It was pretty empty for a Saturday night...it is February but still pretty empty. The bartenders were great. Very attentive, very friendly and accommodating. It was freezing and my friend asked if they could turn up the heat and they did. My friend ordered the nachos. After many years I respect the owner. However, the steak nachos we were served were terrible. They used to come with lettuce and REAL cheese and onions, cilantro, tomatoes and SC. Then we got chips with fake melted cheese and only sub par steak. When I asked the bartender waiter Sean where the rest of the ingredients were he played dumb. I wish I had picture huge fail. I'm a sucker for any place that serves BBQ! I went there on a Sunday Night. There was only a couple sitting outside and me. I went inside and they said they would send somebody out for me. I chose a spot outside right next to the front door. 10 minutes go by and nobody has come by to wait on me. So I go inside and asked if I could see a menu while I was waiting. Everybody in the pub looked confused as of thinking "Who is this guy?" A waitress came by and tried to defend their staff by saying "Its better if you come in first so we know you're here", but one of the other staffed finally remembered me and said that she was suppose to tell my waitress that i was outside, but she forget. The wateriness came by and apologized for the incident. I try avoid making a scene, so I apologized for any rudeness and she took my order. After i got my meal, I started to eat. 5 minutes go by and my waitress doesn't come out to ask if how the food is or if i need anything. 10 minutes go by and by now I have finished my food. 15 minutes go by. At this point I'm wondering if they have forgotten about me or are they serving other customers. I look on the other side of the pub and there's nobody, but me. Finally after 20 minutes of nothing, I look over toward the window and see the whole staff eating and drinking by the bar and just talking to each other. I feel like I could have just left and not paid and they would not have noticed for another 20 mines; it was that bad.... Now yes, I could have gone in there and asked for some help, but they are in the restaurant business. That's their job. The only reason the customer should really do that is if they are really packed (which they weren't lol) Finally at, 25 minutes, my waitress finally takes a peak at the window and sees my almost laying in a sleeping position on my chair. She comes by and asks if I wanted anything else? I said no, paid my bill and left. What should have taken 30 minutes at most, took 1 hour and 10 minutes. Now I understand that its hard to work on a Sunday night, ive done it before and i don't miss it. But at the same time, you gotta be professional and do your job to the best until its over. Their pub closes at 11pm and their kitchen closes at 10:20pm and I got there at 8:50pm, so there was no reason for my long wait. I ordered again for delivery. This time the outcome was far different. The driver arrived on time. All the food arrived cold however and it was tasteless. The only thing that can be tasted is the char on the burger. The cheese is bland. There is no flavor in the bacon or burger. They refused any recourse on the delivery. This is an update from my previous review that I wrote a few days ago. As mentioned, I went back to Gio's on Saturday (9.14.19) for a friend's birthday. I was approached by the bartender that I wrote about last time asking if I was the one who wrote the Yelp review. Although I'm a little uncomfortable with the fact that I was specifically called out from a review I made, said bartender (I don't want to name names or anything) explained herself about her behavior that evening and cleared the air about my assumptions. It was handled as two adults and I feel the need to update that encounter here, rather than rewrite or delete my whole initial review. I apologized and explained my side as well, and I am hoping that when I return the whole thing will be under the bridge. I should also state that this past visit was 1000% better than last time. I had a feeling it would be, but the same karaoke DJ played and didn't miss a beat even while a drunk patron (or friend?) was harassing him all night (whether in a good or bad way I can't tell). Went here for a friends birthday last week, and this is seriously one of the friendliest bars I've ever been to. Now, your mileage may vary on that one, because I tend to be a person that just starts talking to people. I was chatting with a woman when my friends showed up, and they asked me "How long have you known X?" I had just met her! And this scenario played out several times that night as more people drifted in and out of our group. The bartender was adorable and attentive. The place is clean and well kept. There is Karaoke. I may or may not have sang "Nookie" by Limp Bizkit, which I will deny if pressed. I was nervous about going here because of the "sports bar" in their name, but don't be. What it is, is an amazingly friendly neighborhood hangout, filled with people who live in the area. Great! read more
