    Pork Carbonara
    Michelle R.

I was really hoping for a solid Italian spot in my neighborhood. We also had a gift card to use so we were looking forward to a nice night out. However, the food here is just not good. The garlic bread they bring to the table when you are seated is perhaps the best part of the meal. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms as an appetizer. I've never been served stuffed mushrooms that were not actually stuffed. It was a strange ball of something sitting on top of a mushroom. We also ordered the meatball ricotta pasta and the pork carbonara. The pork was very thin and very dry and the carbonara wasn't even close to tasting like carbonara. My husband also did not enjoy the meatball pasta. I will say that the service was very fast and you don't have to wait long for the food. The staff was very kind and knew their job and menu very well. The restaurant decor is also nice and welcoming.

After talking to the chef here and asking to help construct a post 4-Day fast meal for my diabetic needs, he was enthusiastic to help out! He made a beef and Italian pesto crème bolognese of sorts topped with mozzarella! Table side Parmesan & freshly cracked pepper! Absolutely to die for, thanks again for the extra love and consideration! I had NO blood sugar response at all!

It was my very first time there with my girlfriend and her grandma. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the waiters. I loved the food and draft beers were very solid. I would definitely recommend this place to others. It was a very chill environment that never rushed you out the door. Instead, they greeted with a smile and took great care of us.

Wandered in here because our Chinese restaurant was closed. We were pleasantly surprised for a 3.4 star-rated restaurant! Our waiter, Roman, was very friendly and helpful. We were immediately greeted and sealed. We were brought iced cold waters and fresh garlic bread with buttet. Bread was served hot and flavorful! We ordered their fried calamari and it was a large helping and served with a delicious spicy sauce! Calamari was delivered hot and crunchy! I ordered their sausage penne and it was good and satisfying. Perfect amount of spice. Hubby ordered their pesto penne pasta and I had a taste! It was creamy and flavorful! He loved it! He had it with grilled chicken. We will definitely return and try more of their dishes.

This isn't a typical lunch venue. This is more high end Italian food. When my brother and I arrived, there was hardly anyone in the restaurant. Our waitress came over immediately and offered beverages and water. They have a full service bar with several draught beers on tap. The restaurant itself appears to be closer to fine dining with their very nice tablecloths and place settings. We ordered the Neopolitan pizza which was a combination of mushrooms, olives, sausage, cheese and red sauce touched by some basil leaves on top. It was delicious and really hit the spot. The 2 of us finished the entire pie. After that, no room for dessert. I recommend for lunch as well as dinner.

It felt like kismet after we finished up an event at TMA and I searched my Tucson collection and saw we were just a few steps away from Ceres. First impressions: so cute! I mean, this whole area is but I loved the whole concept of the literal hole in the wall pasta spot. Even though they don't have an interior seating area, they don't leave you to fend for yourself, there's plenty of picnic tables and benches around to enjoy your meal. The menu goes like this: choose your sauce, choose your noodle, add protein as desired. I went with the tomato basil with bucatini and my husband had the bolognese with bucatini. Everything was very fresh, including the pasta. We were too stuffed to try the gelato but this is definitely on the agenda for our next visit. Highly recommend if you're in the mood for authentic pasta.

The estimated wait for two was 10 minutes so we grabbed drinks and headed upstairs to their cute/loft lounge. As we passed the entrance we already heard the host increasing wait time to 20 minutes. For drinks she had got the house red cabernet and for me the bartender and I whipped up a little custom cocktail (see pic). Moments later our table was ready. Note: Penelope operates on a novel "community-waiter" system so don't be confused if a totally different person comes by to: take appetizers, check on you, order entrees, check on you again, and order dessert! We've often had four different staff during a meal here and all are super friendly with experience-filled opinions about everything on the menu. We ordered the Burrata and Tomatoes app which arrived in barely 5 minutes - the cheese is traditionally mozzarella-like but here it was almost ricotta-soft... and melded deliciously with the mildly acidic slices of ripe tomato and lots of pistachio pesto (nice twist chef!). We split the Sgt Pepper pizza this time, craving both sausage and roasted chilis. It arrived in 15 minutes with ample sausage and just a few burnt bubbles (totally ok because we know these thin-crusts must be flash broiled at super high temps (around 1k degrees). We demolished the 'za but both of us would like to have seen a bit more green chili. We were looking forward to the olive oil cake however, at 7pm, they had just sold the last slice (confirmed by our "second dessert waiter" who wandered by a few minutes later ;) Atmosphere is casual-elevated and sound levels aren't bad despite the density of tables - likely due to the 20 foot tall ceilings. Parking is free/easy in their private lot and it appears they do a popular takeout business too. We are both looking forward to their return to downtown this fall with Penelope's II !

We found out that they have "team service" which explains why you can see servers are all over the place. Regardless, They were all nice and very welcoming. Place has plenty of seating. Everything was flavorful, our experience would have been better if we were able to get in and out a little quicker.

Food arrived just 15 min later and was piping hot and delicious. The lasagna is a good sized portion (roughly 5x7) and is generously filled with meat. Taste is amazing with medium-firm pasta and a nice crust across the top and sides. The ricotta calzone came with a side of marinara (yay) for dipping as there is no sauce inside. Roughly 2 dozen toppings are available, ranging from $3-$8+. I opted for the meatballs ($8.50) and was slightly disappointed. The meatballs are crumbled within the calzone (understandable) but not pronounced in quantity. I would prefer larger pieces (halves work at this size - after all I ordered meat-ball not meet-ground ;) However, for $8 (a 75% upcharge) my chief gripe is that I was simply expecting more. Next time pepperoni/mushrooms! Ambiance is lovely and waitstaff were awesome -- gracious, knowledgeable about menu specifics, and attentive. Parking is free/easy at this corner of a small strip mall. Can't wait to try their new Detroit menu too! Note: due to Rene's smaller size (less than 10 tables total) and high demand, all reservations (any day) require a credit card to hold. This is entirely understandable as even one no-show is a measurable hit to keeping a full house. I also have kids yet 100% embrace their patio-only policy when with kiddos. This literal mom/pop venue (they have kids too) tries to do the impossible balance between clientele and intimate, high-end dining (we simply accommodate by getting take out when feeding the Whole family ;)

We waited a minute to be seated in a small corner table next to the kitchen We waited quite a long time to have our server acknowledge us we had already picked out food by the time they came. She made us aware of specials they had. They don't have a mocktail menu but the server said she would be able to come up with something for me which was very fruity and sweet definitely not my taste. I wish they would incorporate a mocktail menu or better NA options. The appetizer we had was calamari which was decent- my husband wasn't a fan of the breading texture it has a lumpiness to it maybe like a crushed cornflake feel. Not our favorite but overall it was cooked great not overdone. Love the roasted lemon on the side. I had the short rib ravioli which the ravioli itself was good. The sauce was interesting it had a sweetness to it that I wasn't a fan of. I've had short rib ravioli at wildflower which they also did a white sauce which I preferred due to it being savory. I can tell it was a wine based sauce which had a nice depth of flavor but the sweetness really killed it for me. My husband had the baked ravioli which was a lasagna style which was great! Robust sauce and large portion. If you're in Tucson the sauce seems very similar to Nate's. We did get a free cheesecake for our anniversary which was very nice, my husband loved this and he's super picky about cheesecake. Overall not bad- I think I'd maybe come to try some other dishes but service felt very slow, I wasn't blown away with anything and it was very pricey, mocktail options definitely lacked if you're sober.
