I love GJ's! It's a real family restaurant. It's been here for many years and there hasn't been much that has changed. Why change what's already great? Their portions are huge, food is beyond tasty, service is very quick and friendly. It is always busy, great sign when you're looking for some good food! This is casual dining, it has traditional meals. I was here on Father's Day and the line was out the door! It was worth the wait, we were very happy and had leftovers. I recommend the jumbo burrito, it's stuffed full of eggs, meat and potatoes. If you want leftovers it's a great Choice and still tastes good later on. Their finger steaks though are amazing! Came here based on the Yelp reviews and I have to say it was a really good breakfast experience. I love these iconic local places that have been around for a long time with solid food, service and a huge following. Had to wait for a little while (10-15 minutes) on a Saturday morning, but well worth it. My scramble was amazing, tons of food, tasted great and was perfectly filling. I hadn't been here in quite a few years. Like, at least 8. I remember my husband and I had just picked up our wedding rings and breakfast here was the very first place we wore them together. Oddly enough, I hadn't been back since then. I don't really know why, as it wasn't a bad experience. It just wasn't a place I thought about. I tried to come in a couple weeks ago, and they were closed that day. So we ended up with the horrible pancake place on West 11th instead. So we gave it another try, as they were open today. When we came in, they were packed. I felt lucky I found a decent place to park. The parking lot is super tiny and cramped. I pulled into a spot where I could pull through, versus backing out into a really narrow area to drive out of. Way easier. I called that part a win. When we walked in, mom needed to run to the bathroom, very badly. She stopped one employee to ask him, and he directed us there. He was super nice about it. There is a sign that says it's for customers only, but he wasn't rude about it. Like, she needed to go before she could be a customer. Very simple. Then we go back to wait in the so-called line. Basically right inside the door, at the cash register. It was extremely crowded and awkward, as the entire place is kind of small. Bored, we wait... and wait... and wait more. Another employee spoke to other patrons in this "line" and said it would be just a moment. They were there after us, so mom spoke up and said we need a table for two. This guy was short and abrupt with her, like he couldn't be bothered to notice us and we didn't matter. I wanted to walk out the door right there because I thought he was an asshole. But mom made me stay. We finally get seated and are reading the menu. Two pages, one for breakfast and one for lunch or dinner. Not terribly exciting, but that's OK. It didn't take long to figure out what we wanted. Our waitress comes over and all she asks was, do you know what you want? That's it. No conversation, no greeting. Nothing. I wasn't impressed, but it is what it is. I had to flag her down to ask for a box when we were done. She never checked on us during the meal. I went to pay for the food when it was done, and the guy who was a douche to my mother just holds out his hand for the ticket, nothing said. Rings it up on the cash register and once again, holds out his hand for payment. His only question was, did I want a receipt? That's it Not even a how was the food, thanks for coming in, go to hell, nothing. Most businesses appreciate that you've chosen to spend your money in their establishment and have the decency to say thanks, at the very least. Not here. Our food comes out. Mom had bacon and eggs, I had diced ham and scrambled eggs. Her hash browns were extremely pale. Like no crispy brown color at all. They looked like raw, soggy potatoes piled on a plate. To be fair, they were cooked, but they looked gross and like they desperately needed some more time on the grill. Our toast was much the same. Pale. I know we are in Oregon and we all look pale right now because it rains constantly, but my food shouldn't match that. It tasted fine. I couldn't find any real problems and didn't need to send it back. But I can honestly make the exact same thing at home. It fell into the category of mediocre. It was clearly busy enough that they did kind of an assembly line way of cooking, with many portions of whatever on the grill, hash browns, bacon, etc. So some weren't cooked consistently. Which would explain why mom's hash browns were so pale. Would I return? Probably not. It wasn't bad, but to wait in a ridiculously long line for mediocre food that I can make myself at home, followed by no customer service, no. I'm good. Sadly, the guy who directed us to the bathroom was the most talkative, helpful, and nice person there. There are other breakfast places in town to try, and we will be going there instead. Passing through on our way home to WA and google didn't disappoint!! Our food was amazing! My husband and I both got the biscuits and gravy with hashbrowns and 2 eggs. When looking at the menu my husband mentioned how they didn't have a "full order" of B&G option but when we got our "half order" we realized why!! 2 biscuits are almost the size of the plate, they were fluffy and yum, the gravy was great and they give you more than enough (some places barely give you enough), the hashbrowns tasted like fresh potatoes, never been frozen and not from a bag, they were also great! Now THIS is what a diner is supposed to be like! Huge menu, obliging staff, everyone working like a team, super-attentive staff, being called "honey" by the seasoned female servers, amazing food, humongous portions, reasonable prices.... You name it, this is the real deal! There's no way anyone could really finish any of the meals here, so know that prior to ordering extra side dishes. The coffee is good and ever-replenished without you needing to ask. And your water glass will be refilled constantly without your having to ask, too. Folks keep coming by, filling glasses and cups, constantly. This is the teamwork I was talking about; the staff here works as one, and boy, they are efficient. And they're all friendly and nice, too. Bonus! We were here for breakfast. The menu selection is enormous. I had two eggs with hash browns and bacon and sourdough toast. Everything was perfectly cooked and delicious. WAY too much food for me; I had to leave half. Hubby had a burger and fries and said it was one of the best burgers of his life (and he knows burgers! I think he had five on this short trip alone!). My kid was really hungry so she ordered a French toast which came with bacon and an egg and I think hash browns as well, and she ordered a blueberry muffin too. You should have seen the humongous quantity of food that came out! WOW. She devoured the French toast and some bacon and some egg and left the rest (took the muffin back to the dorm with her. The menu isn't the most impressive, yet it has some decent options. While looking for what to eat, I noticed that the omletes have a disclaimer stating, "We dont count our eggs." Awesome! And they really dont! My daughter had scambled eggs and it was a rather generous helping. I went with a half order of Biscuits and Gravy with Hashbrowns and Eggs. One word: HUGE! Every meal is massive. I had a ham and egg sandwich with hash browns. The hash browns were a little soggy and the ham on the breakfast sandwich was really salty. My hubby thought the omelet was pretty good, but it had way too much cheese on it. The OJ wasn't fresh squeezed, but it was ok. Since COVID struck we haven't been out to eat in a public setting in a long while. I have been craving GJ's biscuits and gravy and decided to pop in. Much to my surprise they were just as busy as before the pandemic occurred it was reassuring to see I'm not the only one craving GJ's home cookin'. The same as it always was before the staff was welcoming and communicated an approximate wait time, well worth the wait to be seated. Once seated the hustle and bustle of the staff was a delight to see. Water cup and coffee cup was always full. The food was delivered prompt and hot! The portion size is insane for the dollar value definitely get what you pay for! I had to have a bite of my sons pancakes even though I was stuffed and found that I couldn't stop eating it was so delicious. Of course the Biscuits and Gravy have a special place in my heart the gravy is homemade like my grandma used to make with fluffy fresh biscuits. Wow, not in a good way. So I was pointed to a single table, I went to the restroom to clean up, I come out to other people at my table. Then I get new table, now the guy that put me there is none so a lady takes my order then asks if I am drinking water. Now I wait long time for (good tasting) food, one water refill that I had to put my water glass on top of the upside down coffee cup to get service. Then I get my check and have three charges: the meal the side of toast I ordered and the drink they tried to say I ordered but never Got! I had to refuse to pay any part to get them to remember I had water and not much of that. Just Bad service.
