I would give it 5 stars, however, location is bad. Old building and parking is decent. I love this place, biggest serving sizes service is fast and pleasant. I only go here for Breakfast. Best place in West Eugene for price, serving size and service. Must go if visiting W Eugene. Stand in line though if you want breakfast at 7am...-2pm ( closed)Come hungry and leave stuffed. This makes me wonder if you really read the feedback and if you care? Allow me to suggest a few alternatives to your packing. My boyfriend and I were craving classic, local diner food on our way to Eugene this weekend and I was worried we were going to wind up at some veg*n/New American/etc location as those were the majority of the options showing up on Yelp (I feel like it's getting harder & harder to find somewhere that serves bacon on your cheeseburger and not "bacon jam" or "bacon mousse" these days, definitely NOT our thing) - luckily we found GJs and it was awesome. Super friendly, attentive staff, fast service, LOADS of good, crazy affordable, classic diner food. I got the waffle breakfast, which came with one huge waffle, TWO eggs, and FOUR links of sausage, all delicious, for $8. Definitely will be returning here next time we're in Eugene and craving something simple & delicious with a friendly, fun dining experience. read more

I gave a star solidly for the service alone. The staff was amazingly quick and attentive, my coffee was never below half a cup, and we didn't wait more than 5 or 10 minutes in the busy part of a Sunday morning. Everyone was friendly and courteous, honestly they had a great vibe going with the staff. The food however was a huge let down for me. I had the half order of biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs. The eggs were fine, the biscuit was nicely done, but the sausage gravy was a bummer. For being a great portion size and wonderful value of price to portion, there was no flavor in my food. I've never had such bland sausage gravy before. It was a creamy mass of nothin on top of fluffy bland biscuit. Boyfriend had the french toast with ham and eggs, and it was good basic fare but nothing really to write home about. Ultimately we would go back, but stick to the basics I think. Or try out the chef specials, that may be where their flavor focus is. However atmosphere, service, and price are all right on for a great experience. read more

If you try GJ's out be prepared for large portions. They do not skimp on meat or veggies! Everything was cooked perfectly and very good. The service is excellent too. Wow, is this place efficient. Great service, hearty food good old home cooking. We came for the breakfast (of course). We were seriously in, seated, ate and paid in about 25 minutes. Staff is friendly and attentive without being overbearing. Portions are generous while maintaining reasonable prices. The places is small, but cozy. I've enjoyed everything I've had on the menu thus far. My only gripe is the hours... They are definitely a breakfast spot. The hours aren't unreasonable, I just keep unusual hours myself and sometimes can't get there while they are open, when I'd like to; since they close so early in the day. Great Mom and, Pop place we have been going to for years for breakfast. If I am not in a breakfast mood, I get the prime rib on special. The portions of everything here are huge! I used to just get eggs, toast, and a hot chocolate. When we would come in they would remember us and I would have a hot chocolate in a flash with out even asking. This is the type of service you get here. Most of the time there is a wait for a table unless you get there at just the right time. The food comes out so fast that you are not waiting for too long most of the time, and the customers don't seem to be the lingering type. It has been a while for me since I have come in until today, and they have new cool tables with GJ's carved in the table tops. The seats appear to either be brand new, or recovered. Either way. Very nice. It was nice to get one of my favorite hot chocolate's. I usually drink tea. The prime rib was also pretty good, and full of flavor. You could actually see the spices on the outside layer of the meat... Impressive. And the horseradish is legit! read more

There's often a line, and it's worth it. For one thing, you can see the staff hustling the whole time. No one is rushing customers, but no one is letting a table sit without making progress or be dirty without people at it. They are hustling! And they're pleasant! And they're keeping coffee and water filled, and I just love 'em. I always get the California omelet, but I don't eat carbs much, so I'm always asking for NO SIDES. And next time, not as many tomatoes. In fact, I think I just want eggs, cheese, and avocado...but anyway, I'm never looking for a discount when I ask for no sides. But they work SO HARD to get me to accept something (like veggies, or a salad, or fruit, or something). It's cute how they care. Once, I did get a few extra avocado slices. That was nice. This is the only breakfast place to go to in Eugene. A nice ma and pa joint that is owned by an old Portuguese couple. The husband stumbles about as if he had a little whiskey in the morning. He then goes through some of their items on the menu. (We've got finger steaks and boy are they tender). His wife is more tan than the girls on Jersey Shore and gives you a little sass while taking your order. GJ's is a lovable greasepit of a breakfast joint. Always packed, always noisy, and always a little suspicious. The menu is truly bizarre, with a section labeled "Welcome to Mexico" featuring nothin very Mexican. It's best to stick to standard breakfast fare, though the best dishes aren't listed on the menu, but scribbled on dry erase boards on the wall, several feet above eye level in a cramped illegible scrawl. If you're a carnivore, go, bring your own coffee (theirs is brownish water), and order the "garlic finger steaks." You'll get greasy tasty minute steaks, a mound of hash browns, toast and two eggs for about 7 bucks. And don't give the waitress any sass. She's liable to boot you. read more

Really big portions of pretty good food at a reasonable price in an unassuming little diner. GJ's has become the go-to breakfast spot on the weekend these days and my SO couldn't be happier. The biscuits and gravy are a standard favorite. I suggest going with the half order as it still takes up an entire oval shaped plate. The corned beef and hash is perfect in that "out of the can" way and the eggs are always cooked exactly as ordered. Sure the service is a little tired and the food while huge in portion lacks a little in the flavor department but those are easily ignored when looking for the perfect greasy spoon. I have other places I go to for fresh ingredients and crazy breakfast items like fruit and vegetables. The tomatoes on top of the thing were a shade somewhere between pink and white... very sad tomatoes. My homeboy ordered a "breakfast sandwhich," which turned out to be 'assembly-required,' because they just brought out a big plate with bacon, eggs and hashbrown... with an english muffin. Soooooo, not at all a sandwhich. Also, his hashbrowns were seemingly uncooked... we hypothesize that they held a blowtorch to the top of them, but otherwise, they were straight outta the fridge. Also, and this is across the board - no spices. Everything was pretty rawdog in terms of flavor. We think the cook might have been drunk and/or high. We also wanted to point out that Ron Swanson wouldn't be impressed. That having been said, we suggest going... if only to experience the exquisitely crafted menus... which are pure comedy. As an example, there's an area that says "feelin wild?" and the option under this header is just a milkshake. In summation, if you don't really care about flavor, quality ingredients, or atmosphere and really just want to shove enough food down your gullet to choke a horse... then by all means, this is your joint. read more

I've been going to GJs for over 20 years. This was my mom and dad's favorite restaurant growing up. They became very good friends with Gary and Judy and now I have a daughter in high school and we are all still going there, checking in on some of our favorite people. There are a few things to know: the portions are huge, the coffee is bad, the prices are low, the owners are amazing, it is booked solid in there on weekends, and the food overall is solidly good. It isn't gourmet or extraordinary...it's diner food and some things, like their omelettes and biscuits, are awesome. You will leave full.
